The Star Wars part spoke to me. 🤣 My son loves what I secretly think are “stupid” books like Ninjago and Dogman. You inspired me to use those as a motivator. Thank you. ❤️

I have a son with ADHD who is a good reader, but reluctant because 1. It forces him to sit and concentrate on the story and that’s hard for him, and 2. he doesn’t value reading as much as running or playing or screen time. He will do his lessons fine, but I wanted him to develop a love for reading on his own time. I decided to keep lots of good books in his room and I allow him to read after I tuck him into bed. Telling him he can stay up late, reading in his room, makes it a privilege and he has read through so many chapter books this way! Anything to avoid bedtime!

Great tips! My son was interested in dragons so I bought him a copy of The Last Dragon Home. We’ve never looked back!

The mistake I made with my reluctant/ struggling learner is when we first brought her home to homeschool i was so adamant on making sure she was doing level 4 work because she is a 4th grader that it was to hard for her and super frustrating for both of us. When I decided ok let’s forget where she is “suppose to be” and meet her where she is at it was like a world of difference. I wish I had got out of my own head the year prior.

Thank you for sharing this! Experience! My 4th grader is placing at a 3rd grade level for most of his placement testing. I need to get a grade out of my head and think about it as what level will work best for him.

My son was a reluctant reader when we first pulled him from public school last year. I never forced him to read once we stared homeschooling. Instead I would have him pick out books and I would read aloud to him. His favorites have been The Magic Treehouse and Harry Potter. We would discuss the books and he started enjoying being read to but still refused to read himself. This summer he wanted a anime coloring book so I told him if you read this book I will buy the coloring book. He did but he couldn’t remember anything he read. He could remember things and even new vocabulary words but not the story. My son has ADHD and his counselor and I found out that he’s reluctant not because he struggles with reading but because he focuses so much on the mechanics of reading but not the story. Our next step is to have him read younger books so he’s not focusing so much on the reading part and instead try to visualize the story. But we all celebrated the fact that he went from refusing to read (he also has ODD) to being willing to read a chapter book on his own for the first time within a year of starting homeschooling. That’s a win for us and he still got his coloring book.

Thank you for these tips. It’s so hard for my 11yr son to sit and get into reading/writing. Will try out the timer and video recording
