- Building a HUGE Multi-level Interchange in Vanilla Cities Skylines | Verde Beach 106
Hello everyone and welcome back to Verde Beach! In this episode, Sheila Johnson is pulling together a consortium of power players to bring professional sports to Verde Beach. But just because they COULD fund this themselves, doesn't mean that they are willing... they're forcing the city to provide Tax Increment Financing or TIF to fund the infrastructure. As a result, the city is investing HEAVILY in transportation infrastructure, including two interchanges, a new rail bridge, a new local road bridge, and a train station, as well as local roads and half the cost of the stadium (eventually). Lots of transportation infrastructure building today - enjoy!

Yes, absolutely love the story-driven content. It's the mix of the fictional, well-thought-out stories and your professional experitise that guides your planning and building decisions. This makes your channel absolutely unique and impossible to copy.
Second hard core
The narrative makes this one if my top the channels to watch. So unique.
@@jthomas6080 Definitely agree that the story telling is what makes CPP top of my list. I watch other CS video on occasion, but CANT miss what’s going on in Verde Beach
Thank you so much!!!
@@CityPlannerPlays Thank YOU for all the hard work you put into this.
i love how there is always a story behind everything in Verde Beach
I'm just happy that those poor billionaires are getting the help they need from those greedy middle class citizens.
@@kevinkorenke3569 that's my word 👌
I ALSO love the backstories!
@@kevinkorenke3569 Reality hit hard with this episode
I have 1 concern with the park, and that's people having the "ability" to walk into the train tunnel near the station. Train stations around me have the tracks fenced in for a few thousand feet to prevent people wandering onto them. In the less pedestrian areas definitely keep it open though
Came to comment this
Yes, including a playground right next to it.
Yeah I was surprised by this. Phil loves putting in fences lol. Some fencing next to the highway/arterial that is adjacent to the park might be good too
Exactly.
I was coming to say the same thing. I love wandering off of paths and into trees so I'd come across that track in no time.
There is no other CS Player like him. Just love the "realistic" Story driven Expansions.
22:52 I'm sure someone else has pointed this out by now, but the visitor count on parks and such (theme parks, nature reserves, zoos) is bugged. It resets each load sometimes. I think it has something to do with very large cities, or maybe the interaction of the new 81 Tiles Mod with post-Parks & Plazas C:S. But you can be sure that Myrtle Park saw more than a few hundred visitors, because it would have had to in order to get to 5 stars.
Myrtle park really needs more ped connections to the roads around it. Also needs fencing by the tracj
I didn't know that - thank you! Great to know and I'll point that out in the next one!
Hey Phil!
The long bridge that goes over the interchange should be converted to a high speed rail viaduct, you didn’t really build in any but I find the structure super cool!
I was thinking the same thing!
Agreed, considering that this bridge is now a pretty prominent structure that can be seen from pretty far away on the other side of the river the high speed rail viaduct would look a lot more elegant than the current one!
I second this, particularly given the goal of using every in-game asset in mind (as far as I am aware he hasn't used it but I'm happy to be proven wrong on that)
Ditto. The high speed viaduct would be clean and modern. The through truss and trestle is too antiquated.
@@brentos-the-mentos I'm pretty sure he used it just outside downtown, there's another elevated section there.
36:00 I think fences along the rail line would be very important to keep visitors safe (especially kids). That said, there is rail line that runs through Forest Park in Queens, NY, and while there are some fenced portions, there are definitely places where an unattended child could wander on to the tracks.
Especially because the playground is right next to the train tunnel
Yeah, was going to say the same. A playground right next to an unfenced railway line? Not a good plan...
If the back of the station has an entrance, maybe add a path, so the people coming from myrtle Park don’t have to walk to the front entrance at Kellerhouse. I love your videos, keep the good work.
Great point - will get that added!
There is a park near my house that has a playground right by a train line. My kids actually really loves the playground. He loves trains and gets so excited to see them go by. It's fenced extremely well but I know a bunch of parents who bring their kids to the "train park". The town has leaned into it and has some train-themed stuff in the playground. Just a thought I had while you were working on the playground in Myrtle Park.
Definitely need some fencing
I was thinking the same thing in terms of train themed amenities. A park near a friend of mine did this. There was even an elementary school tucked in the next block over with a train themed facade.
Hey Phil, I always love infrastructure day! Two concerns: the train tunnel near the playground should really have fencing. Also, I think the park could really use some more street connections to the neighborhoods
I find the story telling to be such a good refresher to this game that's been out for many many years. Many creators try to bring life to builds with mods, but the common mods feel vanilla now to those who have used them for years. Thanks for bringing the life back into the game with the realism of the story
In Myrtle park, the climbing frame for the kids is close to the train line. It might be good to put a fence around the train tracks which come out of the tunnel.
In the UK all train tracks are fenced off anywhere that people are near to, eg I travel about 150 miles to see my parents and it's fenced off as far as I can tell the entire way. Some of the more remote areas probably aren't. I guess it's more difficult in the US as it's such a big place.
Over 100 episodes in and we're finally gouging public money for a stadium.
It’s crazy seeing development over time In my area. they widened a two lane road into a 4 lane road with a sidewalk. Moved the power lines back. all of that still isn’t done, and this has been going on for awhile. Also a brand new apartment complex is being built. You have helped me appreciate that!!
After I started watching him a year ago I've definitely started seeing the city around me in a different light.
35:52 There's a park near where I used to live with a similar configuration, playground close to the train tracks, near a station. They built a viewing deck to the tracks, train operators would toot their horn as they leave the station and all the kids would all run from the playground to the deck to watch the train leave. Adding something like that here might be delightful!
I love how Verde Beach and Clearwater County stories cross over and enriches the story of each other!
For the first time in my whole 5,374 hours of playing this game I literally ripped up my whole transit network. Everything. Now I’m slowly rebuilding it to better and more appropriately handle the expansion of the city. So far so good.
I LOVE the story driven content. It makes the game feel real as well as educate us non-city planners.
Said it before and I'll say it again: stories REALLY take an overwhelming game and keep you honest when you're trying to do a thing. Love it, love it, love it.
Think the new highway interchange was some of your best work in Verde Beach & think the railway expansion in Myrtle Park is a great idea!
Wanted to ask if there would be any real world planning challenges in regarding having 3 highway interchanges seemingly so close together?
Love the episode and looking forward to seeing the rest of the new neighbourhood built out!
From my experience as ling there is enough space for nodes to switch lanes, a few times; it should be good. Ofc if you have a jam, then it might spiral out of control. But sometimes more options is what prevent that initial jam anyways.
@@neurofiedyamato8763 that's good to know, I appreciate the reply! Makes sense that the traffic would need a few nodes to sort themselves out.
I was also interested regarding a real highway/motorway whether distances would impact or even prevent this sort of build so will update my comment to reflect that, thanks again for your answer!
Check out Interstate 93 in Medford, MA---it has 3 interchanges in the space of 2 miles or less: Rt. 16 Revere Beach / Mystic Valley Pkwy, Rt. 60 Salem Street, and Rt. 28 Fellsway West.
@@edwardmiessner6502 thanks for this example! This was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Really appreciate your considered response.
Is it common for interstate roads to essentially go through the centre of cities in America?
I was looking at UK examples yesterday evening and think the closest I could find was the M621 between junctions 1 to 7 just south of Leeds (Beeston Interchange until it merges with the M1), most motorways are quite spaced out with their junctions though.
Thanks again, have a great day!
@@Yes_I_Would_Kent Yes, and only too common
My fave episodes are definitely the ones where you build and adjust transit. Thanks for the content
Dude you like single-handedly got me back into this game. I love how much life you give your cities, and the realism adds a whole new dimension to the game. Subbed
Thank you so much, Vin! Glad you're enjoying the game again!!
I put a little pedestrian area around my stadium, like a wee matchday village, and I really liked the result. Can't wait to see how you integrate yours
Love that idea!
The only reason why I stick around to your builds are the stories behind the development which are absolutely crucial to keep us invested to see how the story progresses.
You're one of the only CZcamsrs that I cast onto my tv! I am so happy to see this series progress, and hope it continues to do so for a long while!
Thank you so much Ramen!!
Absolutely love this story-driven building, very inspiring!
Phil, with almost every episode that you do rail work in VB, I go into watching it with some major trepidation! But I gotta say the result this time really turned out pretty well (*cough*eventually*cough*)! 👏
I feel like there needs to be a fence in the park, where the rail line dips underground. There's a whole bunch of trees and someone walking there could come out of the trees and fall into that hole.
I love the narrative! It really brings the reality of your builds to life .
As an airport engineer I felt is actually fun thing when we thought how to divert operation around the project :)
The usual metaphor for these things is "changing the plane's engines while in-flight". Always difficult, and never goes perfectly, but it can be done...
Your story-driven content is second to none, and sets your channel apart in the quality and thoughtfulness with which you craft the narratives and intertwine such with the build.
Wow, great work Phil ! This is very impressive.
Myrtle Park needs more connections to the neighborhood, at the bus stop at 33:30 in the place where that tree is for example. A crosswalk to the other side of the street would be nice too !
At 34:08 a connection to the street could be made too, you could even extend the path underneath the bridge along the road that way people can get access from the train station to the industry and shops through the park.
The story driven aspect of your content is precisely what sets you apart from everyone else. Keep it up man, absolutely inspiring me all the time.❤
Yeah, giving us the run down of how these large operations and projects typically become reality is extremely interesting and is an amazing addition to the gameplay how-to content.
I admire your patience for these wonky vanilla roads, train tracks and bridges. Ever since I switched from console to PC I cannot imagine playing the game without mods, especially Move It!
Love the box trusses on the railroad bridge.
That elevated rail station in Myrtle Park was perfect!
This was a really great episode with a lot accomplished.
Record breaking pause but worth the wait to see those results.
The rail connections are sitting pretty now, and so are the new road connections.
In real life that kind of re-jigging those rights of way and running new lines takes years to accomplish, and is such a messy process. Often leaves really odd artifacts behind, as well.
Hat's off to you, Phil!
Thank you, David!! The pause was indeed record breaking, lol!
phil i reckon that was your best and most realistic looking highway interchange so far, well done
I love these stories and everything about Verde beach
CPP, I think the story lines you provide to the builds is one of the main reasons why I like your builds so much. You not only do a great job with the build itself, but you give it life and meaning. Keep up the great work.
I love the story driven content. They sort of justify expanding and changing the city.
Definitely here for the story-driven build. One thing that feels awkward, though, is the river run that goes under the rail and over the highway. Wouldn't it be easier to go under both? (I'm thinking of the bridge over False Creek to Granville Island in Vancouver, where the local roads run below a very high and very long bridge.)
Where is this?
@@MordechaiKarp Vancouver is in Canada
I'm a big fan of your story driven builds. Love football and basketball (Go Bucks!)
⚽🏀
You are my favorite. O H!
I always enjoy the narrative story telling. it gives life to the city. 🏉
I found out about your channel back in march since then I have been watching Verde Beach come to life every night before i go to bed. It keeps me company, calms me down and, for some reason, helps me to get thing in perspective. This is the first episode I have watched as soon as it came out and I’m kinda sad i can’t binge watch it anymore, but I want to thank you for the amazing work, the attention to detail and for doing what you are passionate about. It is a huge inspiration to me. Keep on the good work Phil
Phases on working on infrastructure sounds like how we’ve been waiting forever here in texas for I-35 to be fully open
LOL i just love how at 10:01 you can hear regret kick in XD was probably annoying in the moment but just the tone change made me giggle. Also thanks for making me terrified of all my local bridges.... i thought they looked wonky but now i can't unsee it. Still loving the story line!! I would love to maybe see some "corruption" in the future with zoning or something since it is definitely something you see where i am when it comes to where things are and where people have been pretty much boxed in and given no choice but to move. Long game i know but figured it might be fun!
I do wish i had a pc that could handle the game but seeing you play in this way is WAY more interesting then i would ever make it for myself
Interchange mess is quite fun, especially the odd heights. Some generous landscaping would be nice of that interchange, thinking that many people are coming to the stadium from out of town, and they would rather see beautiful things than a Cities Skylines cliff texture. Same story for the concrete pillars on the rail, the colour on those is awful for the area. Another conveinence to the visitors would be a better highway connection in the city, as it currently leads to the middle of a grid. It should lead to an arterial/collector for ease of access. Make sure to fix the new junctions as well, CS loves to add crazy signals.
Edit: Saw the end of the episode, and I love the additional utiliztion of Hart Boulevard. No reason...
Always love the thought and intentionality you put into your episodes and builds! As someone in their first semester of a Master of Public Admin program focusing on Urban and Regional Planning, I appreciate the backstories, designs, and educational parts of the episodes! If I wasn't a poor student, I would be a patron haha.
Good luck with the masters program and more importantly - enjoy it! I had so much fun just diving into things I really cared about in grad school!
Favioirite sports is football (soccer) and rugby and I love the story based content as it adds a whole new dimension to the way cities are planned
I’ve been a verde beach resident sense the beginning. I love the build and love the city. More story telling please!
Also thank you for all the hard work you do to make these videos
I love that everything has a story. it gives the whole series uniqueness and probably infinity. After all, there will always be descendants of the founders who will want to build a new part of the city or rebuild an existing one.
I know others have already said it but more comments are good for the algorithm. The train tracks in the park need a fence so people can't walk onto the tracks. This is especially needed because of the climbing frame near the tracks. A tall fence that is hard to climb would be best IMO.
I wholeheartedly enjoy the story-driven content. I’ve been applying it to the building of my own County/Region and have enjoyed the game so much more because of it. Mahalo!
Your storytelling takes what would be a dry topic like infrastructure and turns it into something so riveting and engaging, truly an inspiration. As always, it's a treat when CPP drops a new video.
The cinematic universe you've created is something that's kept me sticking around for all these years💖
cities skylines and your channel have legitimately made me consider going back to school to become a city planner. i'd love to make a difference in my city to help underserved communities and i didn't realize i could do it like this before i started watching
the editing is better than ever, not disrespecting the previous people but no one knows what CPP wants like CPP himself
I also needed a multi-level interchange in my city so the timing is perfect :)
I've been helping my friend with his city, using what i learned from your videos. He says i've made the city three times better! It's some of the most fun we've ever had. thank you so much.
My only thing would be that for rail infrastructure changes in elevation are usually kept to a minimum so I would have done the full rail line first then rebuilt all the roads which are much easier to change height, every road could be elevated at a much lower cost than that for rail.
Love the series, can't wait for the next one.
The best part about your builds in my opinion is the lore you put behind them. Thanks for all you do CPP.
Love the new stacked interchange! You should come up with a name for it, like the Dosan Ahn Chang Memorial Interchange on Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange in Los Angeles. Maybe it is named after the City's first Public Works director Andrew Cha who successfully worked on getting funding for the original V.B. highway connection.
I really like that you've started adding story driven reasons for additions and changes to your city's. It adds a lot of soul to an already beautiful city build.
I love how your stories influence how the city is built, I wish I had more patience to think things through before I build so im not reacting to the games demand, but rather to the city needs as a functional city. Keep these up!
The story-driven content adds a whole other dimension and sense of realism to your builds, making them stand out from the rest. I absolutely love it!
When highway ramps split, the right lane goes to the right and the left lane goes left. They do not cross over each other. Your left bound traffic has to take the right lane split.
I cam honestly say outta all the CS CZcams channels you are by far the best. I just got into the game so I've got a ton of catching up to do but you've made getting a hang on this game super fun and easy. Keep it up!
Love the content. Keep it up. I love how at almost 10 minutes in, this episode was close to be the construction of one bridge.
I love the story driven content, it adds a depth of realism to the game. The montage of the face palms was a wonderful touch. I learned a lot from this video, too, that I plan on including in my current city. I'm a vanilla player for now, and I really enjoy this kind of content. I feel like vanilla is a (sometimes frustrating) challenge, and I slowly add more DLC with sales. This was a really enjoyable video =)
Your story telling is what got me to watch you! It totally made it easier to design my own cities.
I love the story and the interconnectedness with your other builds! And happy to see soccer getting some love 🔥⚽⚽⚽🔥
Probably your best inchange build yet! I enjoy the infrastructure content, keep it coming
The storyline for the latest episodes are amazing, keep up the amazing work CPP 💜
1:29 we love the story, honestly best part of the builds. really keeps it all together and builds a nice story to follow. love it keep it going
I am finally all caught up with Verde beach! Love the series!
Ive taken so much inspiration from you and I love it all! Yes! Keep up the story driven content! I always watch your videos when they come back and its a lovely feeling to get the little notification! My cat loves your content too!
42:13 It's a truss!
That's it, Phil, the engineering gods demand a PolyBridge video for that one!
It'd be nice to see a couple more park amenities added to myrtle park, perhaps a community pool or maybe something fun like a yoga garden? Especially since there's all this development.
Great ideas!
Nice revamp of the park! would be nice to see a washroom and a few more connections to the street so more of the suburb can use it added, and idk if it would actually work or not but a path into the back of the train station would be nice too
Favorite sport is Ice Hockey! I love this series. I've been with you here since Bluffside Crossing and love everything you've done!
Story-driven content and your professional city planning foundation is the reason I signed up for this channel!
love it! love all of it! i watch your channel a lot! it is so fun to just relax and enjoy your video's. please please keep them coming. also, have you thought about merch? cause I'd buy a shirt with your logo for sure!
me and my friends talked for half an hour today about your cities' story and lore.
we are seniors in college.
Great job as always! Maybe consider fencing around the track in Myrtle Park before little Timmy gets blammo'd by a train?!
love your narrative and your builds, thanks!
I love the story telling. It's a little glimpse into how these massive projects come about in reality. Especially ones where billionaire developers need tax payer money for new stadiums. Love the new interchange too. It's one of the better built vanilla interchanges I've ever seen. Keep it up. See you in the next one.
I was very much anticipating the "record scratch, sudden stop noise" when Phil said we were going to Pause.
LOVE the story driven builds! It has always been my favorite aspect of your channel.
Really looking forward to seeing how this new area develops! Good to se myrtle park getting some well deserved love aswell! Theres just one minor thing though, shouldnt there be a fence around the railway tracks that go through the park like that? Also that climbing frame probably should be in a better location inside the park, there are a lot of better suited places rather than next to the track :D
For Myrtle Park I feel adding a middle entrance would improve the park more. As there is a big section where there is not entrance and if I was a resident in the neighbourhood I'd have pushed hard to have a close entrance rather than having to walk all the way around especially with the part getting a redo.
36:11 > I think it would be nice to have two side gates on each sides of the park, viewed from this angle: one on the left for the people living there (this one is optionnal), and one on the right (next to the gazebo) to provide pietonnal access to the intersection and permit walking to the other neighborhoods.
And, as always, loved the build, the realism, the thought process and the stories that you put together. It makes me think that you may be a excellent game master in board games. And my favorite sport is football/soccer.
I second this ! More connections to Myrtle Park please
Really do love this vanilla series. I play with just a couple of mods, so love seeing you work around the vanilla mechanics. Regarding the lack of people visiting Myrtle Park - I've heard that if you charge the maximum (even if for RP you don't really want to) the park will be more popular?
Love the story driven content, please keep it up! And I hope Shiela Johnson and the other movers and shakers bring ⚾️ to VB!
Thanks for the new video Phil! You still sound sick... I hope you are starting to feel better at least.
You should have put a separate road piece under the train bridge at Myrtle park with only grass, so you have space to put the palm trees on either side closer to the bridge.
Love this kind of story driven content, really makes the city feel more natural and organic
Love your montage editing choice for the rail line mulligans. Might have laughed too much, but it was quite perfect
these videos are honestly some of the only things that keep me looking forward to waking up, tysm 😭😭
I love the story based game plat as well, one thought though if you move the stadium location to the other side of the highway, you would have more room and could add mass trasit like train stations to help reduce motor vechicle usage. Just my .02.
You can build bridges over buildings & whatnot if you raise them high enough. They have to be 5 or 6 clicks high though & I only tried it with placable buildings, I don't know whether it works on growables or not.
Also, you can move a pillar a couple units over by adding a new node via an intersection a unit or two next to the pillar you want to move. It doesn't work with slopes or tight curves though.
I agree with the other commentators, I love the story driven builds.
Excellent work, Phil. Loved the facepalms.
Wonderful episode phil !. I did not understand the rational behind it being a 3 way interchange instead of a 4 way as it is in the perfect spot for a 4 way interchange .
