  • Pedestrianizing a College Campus with the Plazas and Promenades DLC | Verde Beach 101
Hello everyone and welcome back to Verde Beach! With the release of the Plazas and Promenades DLC, it seems like a good opportunity to revisit the Goodall Institute and attempt to pedestrianize the university. The goal would be to make the campus more pedestrian friendly, more attractive, AND allow fire service to penetrate the campus. We're going to pull out all the stops to get this one to work, but I think you're going to like the end results. Enjoy!

If I recall correctly, the Campus DLC already includes trash teleportation - all the campus buildings can teleport their trash to the Admin building. I think the School of Environmental Conservation, unlike the primary buildings, is programmed to have its trash collected locally if it is on a road. Hence why the system freaks out when it's on a pedestrian road - the building is saying "I need local trash because I'm not on a path" but the road is saying "I can't take your trash if you're not in a pedestrian district".

Phil, for that misaligned dorm building near the curved road, you can make it realigned by deleting the curved road & extending the straight road, then place it on the new road section so it's now aligned with the rest of the dorms, then delete the new road extension and recreate the curved street again. Then upgrade back to a pedestrian road.

    • @foamyesque
      @foamyesque Před rokem +3

Campus building can also be freely placed -- they'll jump to dock to a road or path, but you can put them down *first* and then run the path or roads in and as long as you get to within about 1.5u of the edge, the building will work. So you can get away with just removing the curve to prevent the dock, putting the building in by eye, and then re-laying the road. It's also useful for avoiding the errors the game throws at you when you try to build against a curved road -- you can just back the buildings off just enough that they're not trying to dock, and freely plop them.

If I may suggest - whilst you did a great job on the landscaping, I think it would be nice to have some more verity of trees through the campus - maybe some of those light green trees that were there previously there and cherry blossoms would be nice for around the campus - as well as maybe a few more of the flower bushes around the campus as they give it a really nice aesthetic.
also I think it would be smart to add some more trees around the open study area as it is near the road, with a lot of noise and without many trees blocking such noise - may not be a very desirable place to relax and study thus the addition of some trees would really help solve that issue I think.
the sandstone paths added look great though and thank you once again CPP for another fantastic video 👍👍👍

@36:02 Phil, please be careful talking about the cons of blue lights while only taking into account the words of administrations on their efficacy and necessity. Such infrastructure that aids victims of assault are often hard for students to lobby for in the first place and cameras are often not sufficiently manned to prevent assault rather only confirm it after the fact. Blue lights have an ability to stop an attack, this is why they are spaced a few hundred yards from each other: if you are being stalked you can hit the call button on each light you pass allowing security to track your location often better than a camera operator at night. Perhaps in a park n ride this is less effective. But finally, most importantly, my word of caution applies particularly to what i heard to be almost an acceptance of “drunk college pranksters.” If students are prank calling a line designed for possible victims of assault, the fault is not in the infrastructure but in the lack of community education in the university. I love your content, in fact I hope this comment can feel similar to the way your educational anecdotes make me feel. I mean no harm in this message, my intention is only to help. I hope you have a lovely week and can’t wait for the next episode :)

I wholeheartedly agree - and I say that as someone who has used one of these (albeit on a college campus), and I personally feel far more confident parking in places where there is good lighting and any form of police/security communications- even in the age of cell phones, all because of that one experience over 20 years ago (I'm old). IRL, the argument could be made that they are less necessary in the age of cell phones, but batteries die, so a direct communication to help isn't necessarily bad, but you're correct that it's a cost/benefit analysis. That said, I dot assets that look like a call box on my college campuses in game 😆

The pedestrian district should really be it’s own district layer. A 3rd district layer. You should be able to have a normal district, a industry/parks/campus district, and a pedestrian district. I think it was a mistake to make it the same district level as industries/parks/campus

I don't think it should be a district at all. What if instead you just have ped roads. They would work like normal roads, heavily reduced speeds. So you wont need a whole logistics complex (that CPP showed was fundamentally broken a few videos ago). And you won't have arbitrary buildings breaking down because of a weird road. I genuinely don't understand the point of the districting requirements for a ped road, and would love some enlightenment.

As the new location for the vet med building is entirely surrounded by city (and not fields) I have to assume it is a small animal hospital rather than a livestock focus. As such, I humbly request a dog park or three nearby for convalescing animals. It would also be a good way for the college to connect with local permanent residents. The whole vet med school and dog park could be named for Maria Lopez, the mother of the Lopez brothers and an animal lover who inspired her sons to make donations to the college.

Loving the new pedestrian streets, it was really missing from CS before, and VB is the perfect city to incorporate them into, so nicely done. Regarding which road to use - In Tel Aviv, they built a really nice plaza in front of our national theater (Habima Square if you want to look it up), and they used sandstone for the flooring, which looks really nice and bright. *However*, in practice what happens in the blazing Tel Aviv heat (that is similar to VB) is that the stones reflect all the heat and blinding light back, and since there's no shade in the square anywhere, no one can ever walk there during the summer. People avoid it and go to Rotschild Boulevard right next to it because that is shaded. So since you used palm trees in your campus that give very little shade, I would say that it would be better to use a stone that doesn't reflect the heat, but also something that doesn't absorb the heat too much like asphalt. So maybe the cobbled streets will be best.

Awesome video and tips on how to trick the game so to speak in vanilla. As a vanilla console player, I really appreciate that. One thing I did notice was on the one way circle in front of the campus admin building, one of them was facing the wrong direction. Secondly, I noticed at the end of the video with the readjustment of the bus routes, plus the district policy slowing down traffic on the north side of Kellerhouse, one of your two lane north-south collectors connecting the two sides is really backing up with traffic. That may either have to consider being upgraded to that new 2u 4 lane street from the DLC or trying to divert those bus lanes to the 4 lane road that’s already in place going over Kellerhouse. Sorry I can’t remember any of the street names; it’s pretty noticeable though so you’ll know what I’m talking about. Lastly, I do honestly think you need more parking on campus for the dorms. I grew up around Penn State University and currently live around another equally large campus, Texas Tech University. Although mostly pedestrian friendly, there is adequate parking for the students provided. Especially considering how expensive those universities are to get into, a good amount of those kids have cars; whether they bought their own or their parents bought it for them. Just a thought.

That collector with the bus lanes by the university has the slow down traffic policy and it's causing a bunch of traffic on that road.

Great episode! I love how the new assets look on the campus. Though, please turn that one dormitory around to face the right way, it drove me insane this whole episode lol. Also, the slow speed policy seems to apply to trams, which is causing a huge traffic jam on your bridge. Suggestion to remove it so the trams aren't a slow method of transit?

This was such a satisfying episode! However I'm curious why you didn't change more of the roads in the ped district to ped roads like the area shown at 49:05

Simply deleting one dorm and adding it back later would've probably been a way easier solution IMO.
P.S. the one-way exit to the campus (with the sunken station) is going in the wrong direction.

You may have since clocked it but your one way roads into the campus entrance both went in so there was no road going back out again

The one way street in Front of University building is facing the wrong way so that vehicles entering the Campus will exit via Ped. Roads. Also, I think you should consider removing the policy of slow driving(20 Miles), since it causes more traffic on the Bridge and the Intersection next to it.

Do these pedestrian roads really need to be all over? I lived in Japan for about 5 years and they had a bunch of pedestrian areas but they're rarely entire areas. Most were shop and restaurant lined roads connected to normal roads usually near train or subway stations.

In real life you still need to move large things between buildings. In this game you have magic service points that do it all so no limits.

One accident I had while trying to do a large plaza is the few roads that existed got JAMPACKED with almost exclusively delivery trucks, busses, and garbage. Had me in a panic trying to figure out how to fix it lmao.
I think my flaw was having 3 different district types RIGHT next to each other lmao.

I wonder whether it would be more effective to apply some "road hierarchy" to these pedestrian connections. Do all paths need to be transformed into ped roads? In my observation, there's as much a hierarchy of pedestrian routes as roads. You've lost a lot of real estate to new roads here, alas.

Now with pedestrian areas sorted... we need mixed use buildings/zoning so we can create proper European style city centres in the game 🙏
PS. then a proper sequel please

I don't remember seeing you fix it (or maybe you did off camera), but did you ever turn your one-way road around that was in front of your Campus Main Building? I recall that you had a loop before, and both your one-way's are leading in and therefore no way out.

At 30:40, would an overpass crossing work in that area? I feel like connecting up two ends of a pedestrian area without having to stop at a busy Arterial crosswalk might feel more pedestrian friendly. Not sure how reasonable or realistic that would be.

I've noticed if you very closely place a walking zone next to a park the park gets an insane amount of traffic. It works, but it's just weirdly implemented. I had a city park suddenly get 200+ visitors a week right off the bat.

Also today I discovered that you can zone Industry on walkable paths and goods teleport to the service B point and are shipped from there. Not sure if this was highlighted in the video about how overpowered they are.

Phil, I gotta say that I would have chosen cobblestone for the university, because it just has a more prestigious, traditional feel to it that befits higher education. That being said, I think due to the environment of Verde Beach, sandstone is my second choice. Bluestone just does not work when considering either criteria that I just used, so no.

  • @Yakita60
