- Working on a Narrowboat isn't straightforward especially if you need good internet connection so we discuss our learns aboard narrowboat Thistle & Rose.
Moving up the Shropshire Union Canal we take on 25 locks and try and do them all in one day,
We're still learning and sharing what we get wrong and what we have learnt, always with a smile a few laughs and finish the day as usual with a beer & a wine.

We use the same router on our sailing yacht, router position very critical or use remote wifi antenna inside the boat to help. Also use a high gain outside mobile antenna to pull in a stronger signal. On a mobile network your wifi should not throttle your usable speed. Just also add have you updated the RUT firmware, we just have and it made quite a difference to weaker signal.

I see loads of people have talked about your external antennae which you didn't mention in the vlog at all and is key to the setup. We have a poynting omni directional antennae and we get the same speed inside than out, sometimes better the way it channels the signal in compared to our phones

I read you have an external antenna and router but I’d suggest a small mesh WiFi system wired to the router using at least Cat6 Ethernet cable. I’d try and run a line from the router to one mesh access point aft then wired forward to the bedroom.
Router Wi-Fi antennas are usually sub par and a wired mesh system would speed things up dramatically. Try looking at an Amazon Eero system.

Is tethering not an option?
We have separate ones for the Wi-Fi. We can tether but signal isn’t always great in the boat. So the wifi router is easier. Thanks for watching 😊

I am surprised you don't get a better signal inside. The outdoor antenna should make the difference, so I'd say something is not quite right with your setup. I certainly get a lot more speed than that.

I would deffo check ypu wifi channel as different frequecies will resonate in the boat.
And your external ariel makes a massove difference.
We use a cheap lte router as a camping and home backup which gives 100 to 400mb/s.
Ypu shpuld be able to log into the router and if you have a directional ariel get feedback on signsl ad you position your externsl ariel.
Finally, consider using wired cabling for the laptops as wifi kn the narrow metal tube will eat laptop power if there is internal resonance of any form.
To try and sort out resonanse, you shouls have a wifi config page on the router that lwts you chznge the default channels - try moving up or down and see if that improves bandwith internally.
Have you got an outside aerial for your router we have one on our boat, alway have about the same speed as on the phone outside, also the router in the cupboard could affect the Wi Fi. love your vlogs thank you

Yeah I was going to ask this as I would have thought you should be getting more than you are. Might be an idea to change things with regards antenna, router and the likes… enjoying the vlogs guys 👍🏻

Hi you two, looking at your boat you seem not have an exterior aerial for your wireless internet router, fitting one will bring your download and upload speeds up considerably, as your boat is an extremely large Faraday cage it is restricting all signals getting into the boat making reception poor

About your internet. Is there a way for you to mount your modem outside, and then hardwire a cable from that to an inside router that does Wi-Fi?

Hi guys, found your videos yesterday. I can tell you that your internet setup is faulty. There is no way your speed should be slower indoors if you have an external ariel outside the boat that is fed into the router.
I would ask your boat builder to look into it as they must have put that in for you with it being a new boat. You also mentioned your wifi signal doesn't reach throughout the boat, this is easily fixed by buying 'repeaters' basically if you brought one or two repeaters and plugged them in and connected it to the wifi you have that would give you signal throughout the boat and probably on the stern too so you can keep your setup the same when your driving the boat.
Lastly as you have brought a new boat I'm going to assume you aren't eating spam every night due to poverty! There is a way to get perfect super highspeed internet into your boat. It's called starlink and it is satellite internet which doesn't just cover everywhere in the UK but pretty much all the developed world. www.starlink.com/map
it does cost a lot 460 to buy the equipment and 75 quid a month but that problem is then completely solved for you and you can stop paying for those two sims.
Elon Musk owns it. It is what the mobile units in Ukraine have been using during the war.
