With the state of the world at the moment, there is a lot of mystery surrounding what the world's new normal is going to look like. What businesses will make it, what ones won't. One that looks poised to go under and likely not survive is your local movie theater. You see, in a world of streaming, direct to home releases priced like a theater ticket, and the possibility of large scale gatherings being put off for longer yet - it's not looking good. Will movie theaters survive the pandemic? Well, let's talk about it.

That must be one of the most American things I've heard of
Watching Endgame in a theater was a spiritual experience. I never felt more connected with complete strangers than i did then especially with Captain America did THE THING, the whole theater went wild, the energy was electric
One of my greatest theater experiences ever.
I thought Captain America was also Human Torch not The Thing.
.
Yeah it was pretty amazing to have that same visceral experience in a room full of people who love these characters like you do. And I work at the same theater I saw it in so when people would ask if endgame was worth seeing I could make recommendations for it and talk about it with customers. Endgame was so special to me and probably the most important movie I will ever see. It watermarks a pretty fun time in my life.
*THE BEST EXPEIRENCE OF MY LIFE.*
The best way for theaters to succeed is to interact with it's community. My community theater plays awesome local indie films, and you can barely even get a fucking ticket half the time. They need to do more outreach to be successful.
That's why I prefer chains like Alamo Drafthouse and Santikos. Those theaters do have a passion for the cinema experience as opposed to acting nakedly like a business like AMC, Cinemark, and Regal do.

My favorite movie theater already went out of business years ago. It was an old theater that sold tockets for only 3 bucks, the downside is they showed movies that were already out of theaters. It was still fun to go to though, sadly not enough people were interested and it got shut down. It was honestly one of the best theaters I went to too, great food definitely worth theater price and great cushioned seats, something the big theater here in town could really use

It makes me so sad to see that people no longer want the experience of cinemas
In my opinion it's purely because of economics. Cinemas have done this to themselves. I'm not talking about small local ones which have maybe 3 different movies (the ticket prices on smaller cinemas are normally lower than megaplex ones). I actually feel bad for small cinemas because they're always run by people who truly love movies and want to share the experience, I'm talking about the corporate megaplex. They raped their customers with ticket prices and concessions for years and years, and COVID finally gave people the nudge they needed to say "enough is enough."
Ya the movies are a special thing they bring complete strangers to gether wether its marvel or star wars. The smell of popcorn is ausome and not everyone gets candy
Its is sad
nah I hate cinemas.every company should go straight to streaming and not put there movies in theaters
I h8 movie theaters tbh it's kinda pointless now that video on demand is a thing
I worked at a movie theater through my highschool years, with literally every single one of my friends. It's was such a great job, and I look back on it with incredibly fond memories. I wish I'd known I was making memories back then. They have been closed for the virus, and I just found out from my old boss that everybody was let go, so I don't think it will ever open back up again. It went out very sadly. RIP Carmike Cinema 12

Stadium sized movie watching experience? Barf!! I love going to the theater, but trust me, its not about the crowd, its not about the energy in the room. Its about the great sound and visuals compared to my setup at home, allowing me to immerse myself in the story. Anytime someone cheers or boos at a scene, that fouls the experience for me. My local theater lets you rent out a room and have up to 20 people to watch a movie. When you break the cost down among those 20 people, its basically the cost of everyone getting a ticket, but you reduce the number of people in the room by about 70%. I will take few people over a stadium of them any day of the week.
Man U are really good at convincing people to get the products of ur sponsor
two things:
First, my local theater converted into an entertainment complex. They finished the transition less than a year ago. They added an arcade, a bowling ally, a laser tag arena, a mini food court, and has 10 screens. It's wild. I bet that people's desperation to go out and do things when the pandemic is over that it might be enough to keep them afloat.
Second: What about drive-in theaters instead of stadiums? I think they'd be very profitable in the early days of reopening. Stay in your own car, roll down the windows, bring your own snacks. It sounds like a pretty good deal!
Or all tune into the same radio station
Glad Penguin Art But they are common, theirs dozens in just my area, which is not a very small/non populated area,as long as you look you’ll be able to find them
The theater I go to did the complete opposite. Totally got rid of the arcade, and where the balcony is where the couches were, they put metal chairs and tables instead.
I don't know. I think the tv in my own house is good enough to not make me want to go into a drive in theatre.
Yeah but considering that movie theaters make the bulk of their money from selling concessions and idk if that’s necessarily the best deal for them. A good portion of the percent of ticket sales from movies usually go to the production company who made the movie like Disney or whatever. They really rack in the money when it comes to selling people concessions cause things like soda and popcorn cost little to nothing to make , but can be resold for several thousand percent markup allowing the theater to churn in some real money. That’s probably why you don’t see many drive in theaters anymore. Hard profitability. Not saying the ones that survived aren’t awesome. Just that the business model isn’t made to last unless improvements are made cause just selling tickets ain’t doing it I bet.
“Do people make out in theatres?” Yes, it’s all my friends do
Evan Chappell you don't ?😂
So it IS true. I thought it was just a myth.

I’m worried for theaters future. I can’t keep paying twenty dollar tickets but I need the sound and image to be incredible for it to be worth it. No stadium is a pinnacle of sound. I just want to have that immersive experience. Crisp image with surround sound.
The only reason my parents ever took me and my 3 sisters to see movies at a theater is because my dad has worked as a movie theater manager my entire life and we could see them for free as well as get some popcorn and drinks for free too. Lot of good memories of running around the theater before opening as a kid

I kinda know that feeling. A small cinema that used to be near where I live. Dirt cheap tickets and food anyway. It wasn't a big name cinema. But my best mates dad worked there. On the times when we went and he was their our three person tickets cost only one coffee. And we got extra popcirn, slightly more drink. Good memories
Ive seen people making out in the back of the theater i forgot what movie but i turned to my right and saw two people making out
The theater that literally takes 2 minutes to drive through from my house, Elvis Cinemas survived 2020 easily! They started showing drive-in movies in the summer, which did really well. However, wince people usually watch new movies on streaming services and stuff now, they show famous older movies, like Raiders of the Lost Arc and Jurassic Park.
All you have to purchase is a spot in the parking lot. You don't even need to buy an audio device! They broadcast the movie on the radio. These were pretty popular in the 2020 Summer, and would be shown at about 8 o'clock.
"Now, if your eyes start to hurt during the 3D portion of the movie, take your glasses off, rush out to the concession stand, purchase an extra large popcorn, an extra large soda, rush back to the movie theater, put your glasses back on and voila! *_You just spent $35!_* Now enjoy the show!"

I work at a small movie theater, we get a third of people in for most shows, prices for food had to double. Barbie was almost always full though.
I can already see the headlines "millenials are killing the movie industry"
Why do people blame my generation
Michael Knox Because it’s easy to just find a scapegoat and blame it for everything.
Because they know it’s there fault for everything that’s going wrong
Well they blame everything on Millennials, because these days to many older people it seems it is Baby Boomers then everyone younger then them are Millennials. Gen X actual Millennials and Gen Z.
To them we are all Millennials, its the go to direction of blame.
My Senior Thesis was exactly about this topic: about how movie theaters are struggling, viewing audience, pirate prevention, and how they are drastically changing the viewing experience. Dammit Mat why couldn’t you do this a year earlier so I could pass it off as my own.
Let us know how you do on it dude, I hope you still pass!
As an update I did this thesis a year ago for my senior year of Highschool. I got an A on it, matpatt come at me I expect my fair share. My video vs yours. (P.S. please don’t it’s like a potato compared to this)
What if movie theaters became VR? I mean Hulu already has VR and yt has 360 vids so we aren’t that far off.
With the increasing glorification of feminism and homosexuality - let them rot. This goes for the streaming services that are cannibalizing each other and will also fail for similar reasons. Also, may Naughty Dog also see bankruptcy...

My favourite actually temporarily switched to a drive in, with intentions to go back to the regular building when safe. The owner is high risk, I believe, and just doesn't want to do that
Been a manager for a small town theater for years, the back row is absolutely as raunchy and even more so than people describe. So is the parking lot, I’ve seen some things... things I will never unsee, in broad daylight even
“Average movie ticket cost is $9.11”
Me: **cries in Canadian while handing over $13 for one ticket**
Mate in Australia the tickets are $16-20
Alessandra when traveling I’m always curious about other country’s cinemas and man your tickets are so so so expensive! It’s crazy, been in US, Canada and Australia...in Mexico the tickets go for $3.00 Us. and if you want a VIP experience it will go for around $6.00. Us. and it’s a pretty nice Cinema, they take care of details
In Europe it’s ab 4€💀💀
Well that's for standard. For IMAX it's $20 for adults.
Remedie X good thing I can still qualify for a student ticket then
Matpat Im sorry but I have seen people making children in the back rows

My family never had a lot of money to go to the movies. Except for the harry potter movies (my dad read me the books and took me to the film opening night because he knew they were essential to me), our family went to a place called the Elvis theater. It was a 2.50 a ticket movie theater that played movies after they got out of mainstream theaters, but right before they went to DVD. I really liked those experiences and missed them during the pandemic. But I can't really say movie theaters are something that should stick around. I think its time to move on. They'll be missed but when all of this is over its not going to be a big deal
Do people makeout in theaters? You’re asking the wrong person.
I don't, because the stupid seat arm rests are in the way 😭 they knew what they were doing when they made those

I worked at a movie theater through mid 2018 - early 2019 and there were multiple instances of people straight on getting it on in the theater. The most disturbing part was all of them were in kids movies like the Incredibles 2.

I'm expecting a resurgance of drive ins myself.
There is no way everyone will be quiet in a quiet scene at a stadium
The movies will adapt to where they're supposed to be played. If quiet scenes don't work in stadiums then there won't be any in films designed for one.
Or you'll have people in the auditorium yelling at you to shut up and watch the movie, or maybe call the staff workers and kick them out of the movie theater
Matt Patt grand conclusion is basically old school drive in but in a stadium, I don't see movie stadiums happening.
Everything he listed is live action, and is a totally different than watching from home, and you can't make out in the back at a stadium, like seriously there is a reason Netflix, Disney plus are succeeding people rather stay home to watch shows and movies.
@@BitterLime90 There will always be people who want to go out for the experience.
"people rather stay home to watch shows and movies"
And most people listen to music at home, but people still fill stadiums at rock concerts.

Well... This hits differently now.
Just last week, our local drive-in (okay, it's not a movie theatre) closed down permanently.
They just weren't able to compete with the local council funded movie theatre. It's really sad, because it was a massive tourist attraction.

I just honestly hope that one day I won't be telling my kids: "Back in my day we had these things called in Movie Theaters." I'm not sure why 3D died.
Clunky glasses that made everything darker, higher prices, suboptimal experience (IE films were not made to fully imerse you like Avatar did) for said high price
3D movies aren't popular anymore for two reasons: more expensive tickets and they're a gimmick. The first reason is self explanatory, but for the one, people started to realize that 3D glasses don't improve their movie experience in most case scenarios.
3D gives me headaches and I have to wear the glasses over my glasses
@@goldenrose4384 I think it's more like 3D is treated like a gimmick, than it actually is. Too often it's tacked on as more of an after thought, the movie waves stuff around for the sake of making it 3D, or the movie's story simply isn't optimized for anything to be interesting in 3D. It only really works if there are multiple action scenes with stylized choreography specifically designed to interact with the audience.
I understand that, it was like 30 dollars (2 people) to see Avengers (1st one) in 3D. That was with out any thing from concessions. But I do miss 3D Blu-rays.
