Netflix’s major problem is canceling amazing shows in the first season because they didn’t do enough press to get good numbers on the release day. So once the show is actually discovered and everyone loves it, it will have already been canceled

One prime example is Arcane. This masterpiece of a show released 3 episodes each week for 3 weeks. The show exploded and maintained popularity throughout those 3 weeks because of its release style. In my opinion, releasing 1 episode a week for a show on Netflix would be weird because binge watching has become a central part of Netflix culture. I would suggest them maybe releasing 2 or 3 episodes a week for a show like what they have been doing with their reality TV shows. It will keep the binge aspect that Netflix is associated with while extending it over a few weeks.

@@TekkenMasterPL Also cable shows like Better Call Saul, they usually don't record all the episodes at once, they usually make them in batches which is why they can't just dump all the episodes at once and their are usual breaks in between (holidays/breaks. With this model, actors also have time to work on multiple projects at once without having to be stuck on one for a prolonged period of time). With streamers, they make all their episodes at once so they can do whatever they want with the release schedule and not have to deal with it. Netflix chooses to dump everything while streamers like Hulu and Disney+ like doing weekly drops. Also, Netflix doesn't own Better Call Saul. It's licensed to them and when the show is finished releasing all of it's episodes on cable, it's usually takes a few weeks for it to be put on Netflix (depending on the licensing agreement, it can vary when the show drops on Netflix ofc).

i also think netflix is focusing too much on “shock value” shows. shows like their awful reality shows (ex. too hot to handle) and movies like 365 days and tall girl. yes, they give you a momentary check when it blows up on tiktok and everyone hate watches it, but it doesn’t build fans. people talk about it for a week after it comes out, make fun of it, and go on with their day. meanwhile, stranger things (a show that’s actually well written and planned out) is still incredibly relevant years after it’s first season. shows like i’m not okay with this got cancelled, but are still highly praised online with a core fanbase begging for a revival. that’s what netflix is forgetting. they want to make a quick dollar off of a terrible movie or show, but forget that clout fades in a month or so.

So, my personal issues with Netflix are:
    - there's no way to see what the latest releases are, just a selection of newish releases and trending shows
    - it feels like it's 95% cheap filler movies
    - show/film descriptions often say nothing about what it's about
    - show/film trailers are mostly a clip that tells you nothing about the show and are mostly boring and unengaging
    - it doesn't show you what you've already watched
    - the price is way more than other services, and those services offer shows and films that aren't mostly filler... and the price keeps increasing
    - it does a very poor job with shows it thinks I will like

Going to a specific list to see what I've watched is not very helpful. If I'm browsing the list, and I see a film that I'm not sure I've watched previously, it won't tell me. It will display it like any other film. I would want it to have a red underline, or border, or an icon showing that it's been watched previously. MatPat really does have a point about the bingeing and release schedule thing. As someone who watches dramas that release episodes on a weekly basis, there’s time for us to react and anticipate each episode. It gives us something to look forward to. If people want to binge a drama, they will simply wait until the week or day of the final episode to do so. Following a weekly release schedule will still give people the opportunity to binge a show, while also letting it last longer.

None of them understand why I like to take breaks every few episodes. Sometimes even if it isn't strictly a drama it's nice to take bit and digest what you've watched.

    • @coachleif
      @coachleif Před 2 měsíci

I think it's highly individual. A show has to be exceptional for me to bother with watching weekly, and even then I would prefer to binge it. The only two shows I have bothered watching weekly were ones I got into by binging first, Succession and Better Call Saul. In both cases, I waited for multiple seasons to come out before committing, and only once I was hooked would I have bothered coming back weekly. In both cases too, I enjoyed the era where I could binge quite a bit more, but I was in deep enough I would watch weekly. Also in both cases, I haven't watched a weekly show since, and the only way to get me to commit to that is have a body of work for me to actually get into.
For example, Better Call Saul is still my fav show... but it's a slow starter, it worked in it's advantage to string that together a little bit more, whereas I may have gotten lost over the course of 5 seasons before it hit me I was enjoying it even more than Breaking Bad.
This isn't one size fits all... but every weekly show I ever watch anymore is only a result that I binged several seasons of it already.

Like you said, a big reason why Disney Plus works in that regard is because they release episodes on a weekly basis. It gives time for fans to discuss and theorise and ultimately bring new people to the platform. The binging method for Netflix was cool for a few years, now it's just hurting them.

This is the same problem as video game piracy, in a way. In attempting to crack down on leeches you end up pissing off legitimate customers and will inevitably end up hurting your userbase long term when the value proposition of the service becomes less attractive.

Definitely agree with with the anticipation and highs that come with once a week new episode premiers. It takes me back to childhood and looking forward to the weekend after a dragging through the school week which is now just a work week. I want to unwind and I having to scroll through all of my saved list shows and deciding what to watch is exhausting. When I do finally decide on a show I either binge the show or just simply find another form of entertainment/stream because I am just so tired of the experience from the get-go.
Can Netflix make a program or feature where it plays only ONE episode of my personal saved list content and then automatically go to the next series/show so to artificially create a sense of suspense or anticipation?
I similarly do this on CZcams. Different playlist created based on time so each playlist has content that has all ready been pre-approved/considered, meaning no decision on what to watch when I decide to watch something; as well as knowing from the beginning how much attention I have to dedicate to any one topic/show because the content is separated by video length. This feature could also be separated by genre or have a mixture to break the facilitation of a binge.
Ads or commercial breaks? I am all for it if the price reduced. Tubi and CZcams have them and I appreciate them as it makes me retain interest on the show/topic and a burst of time to not be a potato, however, no password/account monitoring. I have a small family but everyone is spread out geographically. Netflix will not see an increase of four new accts only a loss of a premium account. Is the profile option not exist for families with different members/interest? Let's take it to an extreme as an exclusionary decision taken by a company is defining what constitutes a "family."

what people forget is water cooler conversations only happen around exceptionally good shows that appeal to a broad demographic. the vast majority of shows do not fall into this bucket.
statistically most shows are fairly good/average/fairly bad. for these shows, many viewers become bored or distracted during a week hiatus and progressively drop off. but if the next episode/next season is only an autoplay away, viewers don't have time to get bored/forgetful and keep watching - netflix keeps the eyeballs.
think about it like Amazon. sure there are some things I would wait a week for, but I purchase ten times as many things that I prefer to get the same day/next day. netflix is the same. sure there are some viewers who don't care about waiting - but ten times as many viewers will shell out cash to view what they want, when they want it.

I'd argue it's better to forget that stuff so you can still enjoy it if you decide to rewatch it sooner in the future if someone you know is about to watch it and you want to join them without being the "ooooh, this is a good part coming up" guy. I just finished rewatching Psycho-Pass with my sister. It's been years so I didn't remember much about it, but since we had to actively try to make time for it, we couldn't really binge it and I actually enjoyed watching it through slowly.

i think a major gain for companies when releasing episodes weekly:
disney+ marvel shows are typically 6 episodes, with one releasing every week for 6 weeks. this means that if you want to watch them as they come out, you will have to renew your subscription once meaning you have to pay for 2 months as opposed to 1. just a little way they get audiences to spend more money, while having time to theorize and discuss a show, keeping it relevant for far longer.

Exactly, releasing once a week means you need to stay subscribed to tune in. If you dump all 16 episodes at once of a season at once you may only get a few weeks with eyeballs on it and someone may just subscribe that month when the drop happens. Do it every week you get a bare minimum of 4 months of revenue and a lot more interest over a longer period of time.

Paramount has released Star Trek series (usually 10-12 episodes) where there is at least 1 week of overlap between the shows for the same reason. 5 series (which they have) means they have about a years worth of content that stays pretty fresh and changes (every show has a different setting/feel, one 2D, are animated and one 3D). The overlap means more people will check out "that other new Star Trek" because they pay for the week anyways, regardless of when their particular "month" ends.
Their still weird in some places with what feels more overlap then is needed, but overall it's been a really successful strategy. After all you don't make 4 spin offs that expensive for a show that's failing

The reason I was able to know most of the shows that I watched is because of the discussions or buzz around the show, where I would see people speculating or just simply excited about the show. The intrigue is really powerful tool to get someone into the show whether it is criticism or praise imo. Also, it lets the audience grow more as each episode releases. Binging is great if you're late to the party imo, but if it's newly released some people can decide to watch it later, which scatters the watch time or popularity of the show. Unlike with one episode (two or three epsiode is ideal imo for more discussions) the show can be popular for weeks. In addition, watching something on it's release feels exclusive, where everyone actually gathers around to watch the show simultaneosly, where excitement is high imo.

I think going forward that should be what every Netflix show should do because you can still "binge" three episodes while also waiting for the rest of the series to come out weekly. I agree with most of this, especially the binging. When I got hooked on Prime's The Boys, it was more fun waiting. Most shows I end up binging I get sick of after 1 season, and forget about it. But one thing that wasn't mentioned here is Netflix's interface. There are no summary pages like every other streaming sites. There are nights were I'm looking for something to watch on Prime, click on it to see what it's about, and then notice the 'suggestions' . That usually causes me to go down the rabbit hole, and end up having 10 to 15 things, that would never show up on the home page, but are now on 'my list'. Sure Netflix has the 'more info' arrow (which is difficult to click sometimes) but the suggestions showing up under that, do not lead to another page with more suggestions, just automatically play if clicked.

    @El_Rey_247 Před rokem +239

I think you forgot one huge factor: people have to go off-site to get vibe checks about content. They removed the review system, which means that people are constantly driven _away_ from the site if they want to share their opinion or see what other people think. Sure, die-hard fans will always form communities on Discord or Reddit, and CZcams videos will get made, but being unable to interact then and there is a really big deal.
I observe this in how I interact with CZcams. If I ever look up clips of "made for children" content, I find myself actively avoiding the official videos because the lack of comments means that there's no one to reminisce with, no conversation, nothing.
It's not limited to Netflix either. CollegeHumor's streaming service Dropout also doesn't host comments on their videos. There's a Discord server, and people talk about videos shortly after release, but it makes it challenging to join the conversation later because the moment has passed. To a different extent, Reddit also has this problem because new comments are disabled after a few months, so reposts are actually necessary in order to allow new people to engage. CZcams, on the other hand, has videos that are over a decade old and still get new comments. Sure, I wish comment threads were better, and you weren't constantly notified as "replied to" when someone else is actually getting a response on the thread, and I miss being able to open comment sections in their own pages and browse that way...
Point being that CZcams has a really good comments section for letting people engage with the content on-platform, long after it was posted, with suggested content in-sight the whole time.

    • @DrNaviMD

I understand the issue with binging, but I have a horrible memory for a lot of these shows, and seeing things once a week will sometimes leave me forgetting some details of earlier episodes XD While a daily release would be interesting, I wonder if having 2 or 3 episodes a week with a break day in between them would be good. My other main issue with weekly shows is that they compete with other series I'm watching. I might be interested in 2 shows and loving them, but if time is short one day, or I only watch one of the shows on release, I have forgotten about the other (though typically this is in an anime season with 7-10 shows competing). That has then led to a number of incomplete series in my list that I want to eventually get back to, but I would have to restart because it has been awhile XD That is one reason I like to binge shows, it helps improve my chances of finishing them.

I imagine some of Netflix's downward spiral could also be attributed to the loss of third-party licenses. Specifically, all the Marvel shows that recently moved over to Disney+ under the new label of "The Defenders Saga." Sure, they were canceled back in 2018 and 2019, but that was due to a substantial loss in revenue as interest in the individual shows started to wane. I imagine they planned the franchise to be their version of the Avengers but couldn't quite reach that level of popularity. Now, with the IPs no longer on their platform, they have a significant gap between viewers who are superhero fans. I remember hearing back in 2018 that Netflix acquired the rights to do a reboot of "The Chronicles of Narnia." However, they've done nothing with it. They've been sitting on the books for almost five years. Granted, a pandemic has slowed down a lot of their original work, but they have yet to make an update on the franchise.

the biggest thing I find with netflix is that they dump an entire season (or part) at once, immediately tease the next bit but either delay that second part way past reasonable or they just never release it.
a great example is part 6 of jojos bizarre adventure. on Crunchyroll we had an episode a week, and at almost 50 episodes per part that keeps things going for a while. netflix? they adopted part 6, dumped 12 episodes at once, then didnt drop the next chunk for like a year. it's completely ruined the flow of the show when there was nothing wrong with it to start with. theres a reason I've been really struggling to click with this part when I was so hyped for it to start initially. I've even tried to artificially slow it down for myself - me and my brother only watch one episode a night, we dont binge. but it doesnt fix the problem when you get through the whole chunk in a little under 2 weeks then have to wait a year for the cliffhanger to get resolved. especially with having adhd it gets real easy to just stop caring, even when I'm so excited for it in the beginning

Netflix has this really bad habit of making a new show basically every week, and these shows don’t bring in the numbers. Instead they should focus on popular shows that would highly benefit from a new season. Shows like Stranger Things and The Dragon Prince are the first two to come to mind. They are very popular, using big names and big budgets to produce a high-quality show that is very well received. Dragon Prince uses a lot of the team from ATLA and even some voice actors from ATLA for crying out loud.
If they add more seasons and episodes per season to already existing shows, I think they’d benefit greatly. Making a new show every once in a while would still work, as long as they look at how to make a good show and what’s popular

I don’t think greenlighting a high number of shows of a large variety is the problem. In fact that is the hallmark of Netflix, that they’ve got a little bit of everything. There can be experimentation, new things, creativity. But yes the lack of promotion, subsequent cancellation, and all-at-once dumps are just killers.

Economists call it "negative elasticity" but the common name is "death spiral." This is when you raise prices to cover your losses, but wind up losing customers to the point where you have less income than before. The cycle continues until you either 1) go out of business or 2) reach a stable point with a very tiny number of rich customers who don't care about price. My local newspaper is in this mode and over the past 8 years has gone from $1.20 per week to $26, a 2,050% increase. That's over $1,200 per year for a newspaper, and they have finally hit my tolerance limit. At the next renewal, I won't and they'll have to distribute my missing income over their ever-dwindling number of remaining subscribers.

    • @VoIcanoman
      @VoIcanoman Před rokem +2

Jesus Christ. TWENTY-SIX DOLLARS? A WEEK? The regular price for Mon-Sat (no Sunday paper anymore) of my local newspaper is $10.80/week (including taxes). And that's CANADIAN dollars (works out to $8.30/week in USD). Moreover, they're always offering 50% off deals, so if you get on one of those (they usually last 5 months), once you let your subscription lapse (instead of paying full price when the deal expires), they'll call you within a couple weeks to offer you the 50% off deal again. I've been doing this for years, and while the price has slowly crept up (about 10% over the past 5 years), it's still a pretty reasonable price to pay for the newspaper...if you even want a physical copy of the newspaper. Because they also offer some pretty insane online-only rates, including one right now that is just insanely cheap - 5 months of unlimited online access for $1.50. THIRTY CENTS A MONTH (plus tax, but c'mon, that's like ~3 or 4 cents, not even a nickel). And that gives you all of the articles, puzzles and comics that a physical paper would.
Your local newspaper must serve a pretty small metropolitan area, because with a cost like that, the potential subscriber base has to be TINY. Either that or it's a trash newspaper and nobody wants to buy it, but that seems less likely.

When you have an entire series to discuss all at once it makes it more complicated to get excited about those individual episodes, and it ends up feeling much more like just a really long extended movie, which after about four hours I need a break from.

  • @catherineholden6388

I remember when we had to watch a show, like Lost, once per week. I was in groups that would discuss the show the following day. And then we didn't get anything during the summer. It kept us talking for years. It's so hard waiting to see what happens, but I'll have to admit that you are right from a strictly financial standpoint. However, that being said, the only way for this to really work is for original programming to be of the kind in which you ARE waiting to find out what happens. Episodic TV from the past that simply had individual episodes that weren't building to an eventual conclusion, would have no benefit. I guess they never did other than watching a really good show week after week. However, no one was talking about it the next day. Netflix is supposed to do a last season of Manifest, which could benefit from the once episode a week approach (especially since it left on a giant cliffhanger).

The problem I have with the “episodes every week” format is that one single episode doesn’t seem like enough. Especially if the show is slightly shorter, as in between 20-40 mins. HBO Max actually solved this by releasing two or three episodes a week. By doing this, it actually feels substantially more rewarding and fills in the sometimes long wait for the next episode.

Like look at something like avatar when it was first airing or the owl house now. They're both more episodic that leaves people satisfied. Netflix was like a giant in streaming when I was growing up, likely a reason Best Buy was put out of business. It was convenient and cheap. $5-7 a month to watch a movie from your couch and not have to return it to red box or Best Buy? It worked. However once all the other streaming services started up it wasn’t that unique anymore, and the prices have only gone up. At around $20/month now, but what am I REALLY getting from it?
I think you’re right about the binging. Sure there’s shows on Netflix that I loved, Stranger Things probably being the main one, but the season can be finished in like a couple days for me and only releases every couple years. So why would I keep paying that price for all those other months? If they instead had a more scheduled release for their shows it would force people interested to keep the subscription for at least a couple months.
Plus going on Netflix now almost feels overwhelming. There’s too much on there. Too many shows that it gets stressful to try to find something to watch. For me at least.

Early on Netflix got a lot of praise for releasing their shows all at once, with the backing argument that it was based on binge watching behavior they observed with shows like The Office, etc. That was praise in comparison to traditional TV show releases.
But in hindsight I think people were misattributing positive feelings stemming from the on-demand nature (watch it exactly when your schedule allows) onto the more visible aspect of “X episodes all at once.” It’s not that the binge release model was ever good, but that the novelty of an immediately available TV show you can watch whenever you had time for it had no true comparison yet.
