Gotham is full of things that can kill you--the Joker, Penguin, dirty cops, poor infrastructure--You name it! But there’s also the sort of danger with which we’re all familiar, like Disease. MacGregor’s Syndrome, the illness that plagues Mr. Freeze’s wife, is THE disease when it comes to the City of Gotham. This got me thinking: What is the real-world counterpart to MacGregor’s Syndrome and are there any promising treatments or cures? In this episode, I explore as much Batman Lore as I can to find out, and the answer will make your Blood Run Cold!

Dr.Freeze sounds cooler tbh

Maybe the reason Mister Freeze took out the Doctor from his title because he felt he was not worthy of it since he could not save his wife?
That's deep.

The ironic thing is that in literally every comic that has Nora Fries cured, she turns out to be evil herself, and I mean *actually* evil, not just desperate like her husband is. One comic even has Mr. Freeze stop her by freezing her again.
Really? Man that's just sad
Sad ;-;
Or breaking up with him after being cured
Really?
Is that comic where she isn't even his wife canon
I was thinking that he calls himself MR. Freeze because he feels he's failed at everything (and lost everything).
All of his training, his status as a Doctor, was not enough to save his wife. Then the accident destroyed almost every trace of the man he once was and his actions made it impossible to save his wife legally.
He is now simply a man driven by two things; cold, unrelenting revenge, and the unending desire to cure and save his wife. As a criminal who kills people, he can no longer call himself a doctor. He is now "MR. Freeze."
You summed everything up.
I saw it as the public gave him that name and he didn't care enough to correct them.
S.A.M. My God, that's deep. I love it.
S.A.M., whoa.
S.A.M your right he doesn't consider him self worthy of the title DR. any more. Mr Freeze really makes you think
The big problem here is that Freeze DID perfect cryogenics* (sp: cryonics). He knew exactly how to freeze her and bring her back. That's why in every depiction of Nora Freis in the tube, she is floating "In liquid." She is not "Encased in Ice." Technically if you could get in there and not turn into a popcicle (assuming it has something to do with injections and treatment provided before being put in the tank) you'd likely find her skin malleable and the cells unbroken. We KNOW that you have to remove water from cells in order to safely freeze them without the cells rupturing. We DO have theories on how to do it. What we don't have is a practical method of removing water from the body, replacing it with a deep cold substitute in order to maintain cell stability and a method of reverting back. We have all the theory in the world about cryogenics, we just don't have any practical engineering surround it. Which is what I think makes Victor Freis so cool, he's not just smart, he's ridiculously smart. Just in applied engineering and not medical treatment.
I've read about a technique in which doctors could delay a fatally ill/wounded person's death by temporarily replacing the blood plasma with some sorta cryogenic liquid. Dr Fries may have found a way to do it more permanently, perhaps a better liquid that allows gas and nutrient exchanges (O2 and nutrients go in, CO2 and other byproducts come out). I remember in Batman And Robin, there were bubbles in the liquid, and of course the tank needed power. One can easily presume, then, that his wife isn't quite an icicle as Mat assumes.
Yeah, this is another dumb video. Seriously....as if you could operate every cancer and is if the whole field of cyrogenics was just not existing....
You mean cryonics.
Well, there's actually this one incident I heard where a guy was practically frozen and presumed dead, until they tried a new treatment or something where they took his blood, heated it and injected it back. He eventually came back to life, but they had to amputate his hands cuz it was too frozen I guess.
Correct. In Batman Snow it shows his origin(I'm sure there's other slightly different origin stories, most batman villains are like that) and it shows that he did prefect the freezing process...however the program was done for a weapon(the freeze gun he uses). They re-calibrated his machines and he had already put his terminally ill wife in it. So basically he refuses to blame himself and blames the people that changed the settings. He goes crazy from there and sees his wife(who is in pieces on the floor)...who tells him to kill everyone involved in the project.
8:03 “i don’t think they started putting him into quarantine and started wearing surgical masks”
oh how that line aged well
@Nathan D. Larson yes
Bruh why do you quote something that isn't even what he said? If you actually listen to the clip he didn't say anything what you said mat said "they don't exactly put him into quarantine or wearing surgical masks"
@@steelpump100 It is close enough to the actual quote
Zacchery Andersen that ruins the entire purpose of a quote
@@steelpump100 I agree, there's too many of these. It's not funny, it has no relation to Covid.
I actually have an idea of why he goes by mr instead of doctor. He may feel that he doesn’t deserve the title until his wife is safe. He probably blames himself for not curing her fast enough
He could also be like "Mr Fantastic" where he thinks only medical doctors should use the Dr in front of their name
I mean. he's obv not a specialist in whatever it was she was ill with so I'm not sure how his being a doctor has anything to do with it.
maybe it's disguise? I mean he's already using Freeze, 'Dr. Freeze' is just him spelled differently. but what doctor goes by mister when he can help it, right? so, nisdirection maybe?
@@gregmercer7736 deep and sad.
Also, pretty sure freezing a lady will get your medical license revoked
You're forgetting that the Gotham episodes were about him trying to find a way to unfreeze her. It makes sense that she's still frozen in future installments, (excluding Clooney) because rather than looking to cure MacGregor's he's trying to cure cryostasis. He wants to bring her back from the fate he accidentally forced her into.
Also, he gets up a photo of Ed (Riddler) as a photo of Fries
@@brnby6645 timestamp? I can't find that anywhere in the video
Peter Marsella 4:45 :)
He could refer to himself as Mr instead of Dr because of his inability to save his wife. He may not feel like a true doctor because of this.
@Emmet Furlong Not really. According to his villian profile, he has a PhD. So he would be called doctor regardless of whether he practises medicine. The title is tied to his certification, not his job or emotions.
Still doesn't really make sense.
Roses are red silent as a mouse your door is unlocked i'm in you're house
@@anons.9200 um... yes, technically he would be a doctor, but he could feel that he didn't save his wife, so he isnt a doctor or shouldn't be a doctor... if so, he could choose to call himself "Mr." to express his failure, even if he technically has a PhD
That's a very good explanation of the dr mr confusion

Batman works at night.
Freeze probably realized that he killed his wife. He gave the overwhelming feeling of knowing that he would never get Nora back in the animated series.
But in the movie sub zero his wife got cured and she is alive
I have a theory to add, what if Mr Freeze subconsciously knows that he cured his wife but doesn't want to thaw her out because he knows that when she finds out all the horrible things he has done she will hate him so he pretends she isn't cured so he can keep her frozen
grkpektis thats a pretty good theory man 👍
She's still dead though.
grkpektis but that's just a theory, a diet theory!
In Batman Beyond, he does manage to get her unfrozen and fully cured, then she leaves him because she finds the love in his heart has grown cold and he has become a criminal during their time apart. He gets so depressed he stops being a criminal, IIRC.
He keeps her frozen so he doesn't have to hear her constant nagging and belittling of him....(I'm a super villain god dammit)

Wouldn't Mr Freeze be an antivillain?
An antivillain is someone who has generally good intent, but pursues it destructively. I think this guy fits that pretty well.
huh, I've never heard that term, but I LOVE it!
This seems like a fitting description for Thanos - His intent being to avoid inteligent life obliterating itself from resource shortages but doing it by killing half of life everywhere
@@Felipe_9999 that’s just the MCU version of Thanos. The comics version is because he’s just a simp for Death and thought killing half of all life in the universe would get lady death to love him back
"He also killed all of nora cells"
Lazarus Pit!!
They... tried that. She ended up basically as a living Lazarus pit that could conjure flames and animate the dead, called Lazara. Eventually Freeze had to put her in cryo-stasis again to stop her.

Bill Gates is confirmed to be Mr. Freeze because he created something that freezes no matter the room's temperature! :O
great work there
What if mr.freeze knew he killed Nora and he's not looking for a cure for cancer but in fact a cure for death ?
It's DC. Cures for death happen all the time, you can probably get one at the corner store.
People have been killed and brought to life in the dc universe before
Search up the Lazarus Pit. It brings people back to life. So the cure is already there and obvious.
+Sangerino shit I forgot about the Lazarus pit

How to ruin the theory:
Have a comic where the Syndrome is said to not be affected by temperature
I'm sorry, is this comic theory? I think you got this channel confused with comic theory. This channel focuses mainly on films, its film theory, not comic theory.
also the comic probably meant heat doesn't fix it
Fun Fact: In the recent comics: Mr Freeze was able to restore Nora to life. However Nora’s mind was corrupted due a serum created by Lex Luthor, and she lashed out causing Victor to freeze himself in order to survive. So basically Nora become Mrs Freeze while her husband is now the one in a block of ice.

My grandpa had lung cancer. So I know a lot about that type of cancer. So your theory about lung cancer is (from my thought) spot on. So..... 1. His lungs filled up with liquid so for Nora’s lungs to fill with blood is pretty spot on. 2. He got very frail so for Nora to start getting frail is also right. 3. My grandpa smoked so for her to use drugs or to smoke could be why then she has lung cancer. And 4. Cancer is in my family so for Nora to have cancer in her family could be why she has cancer.
So your theory is right. Nora has cancer.
The little message in this video is so ironic considering what’s going on right now. He was appreciating medical professionals before the virus.
He's not trying to hide his identity. Secret identities is really a superhero thing. Most of Batman's villains don't have them. I mean really, Freeze is a guy who can't survive outside of a cryo-suit. Can you actually, seriously picture him putting on a suit, tie, and maybe a nice hat (all OVER the cryo-thingy) and going to work as an accountant or somesuch? Really?

"The title Mister became a badge of honour, and today, in many Commonwealth countries, a qualified doctor who, after at least four years' training, obtains a surgical qualification is given the honour of being allowed to revert to calling themselves Mr, Miss, Mrs or Ms in the course of their professional practice"
Mr. Freeze is my favourite DC character because he isn't truly a villain but is more an anti-villain who is trying to find a cure to save his wife from MacGregor's syndrome. And I love how Batman Arkham Knight shows Mr. Freeze expressing his respect towards Batman when he dies.
Why did you put a picture of Edward Nygma on the screen instead of, oh I don't know, a picture of Mr. Fries himself? 4:44
I also saw the dumb mistake, he probably hasn't seen the series.
Yea I was like O.o when I noticed that too.
MattPat or the editor, we may never know.
Cause he's puzzled by the change in names, Edward is the riddler.
The Tronzolor I can't believe Matpat missed this
she probably had cystic fibrosis
its genetic
it can affect lots of organs
it can cause fluid build up in the lungs and upper respiratory tract
and cystic fibrosis patients require bronchodialators in order to breath ....
but I'm not sure if cystic fibrosis has different stages :/
Saleem Al-quirem I'm doing a project on cystic fibrosis in school. Mr freeze should just lick her skin to tell. If it taste salty, then she's got it
but because its genetic that means it cant be more common in drug users. plus theres no cure for cystic fibrosis
Saleem Al-quirem speaking as someone who has cystic fibrosis I can say with reasonable confidence that it isn't what she had. The systems don't match up past fluid in the lungs and coughing blood ( in later stages)
it could also be pulmonary fibrosis
Saleem Al-quirem Yea, it's definitely not lung cancer (stage 1 cancer is cured with surgery, which is a very possible and effective treatment even today, lung transplant is useless in cancer that has already spread, and lung cancer patient doesn't benefit from bronchodilators, among other priblems with the theory). Probably a made-up disease, but has most in common with cystic fibrosis.
Also, Freeze probably injected his wife with some sort of substance that prevents ice crystals from forming in the cells before freezing her, in order to not kill her (not possible in reality, but Mr Freeze is scifi anyways, maybe he had technology that doesn't exist in real life

In Batman the animated series season 4, Nora was successfully cured, so that means that what ever procudure that was used for the cryrofreezing kept her alive.
Yeah, Mr. Freeze's character is a bit of a tragic one. Unlike most of Batman's foes, he's not entirely evil, just misguided. His wife was dying and he wanted to help her, so he thought he'd freeze her so that he could cure her. You can't argue with the fact that his heart was in the right place and he was only doing his duty as a devoted husband.
baliyae in the new 52 D.C. Comics Nora is not really Freeze's wife. Freeze at one point worked for the Wayne enterprises and was fired by Bruce Wayne when he came back to Gotham and took control of the company. The woman had been frozen for a long time before Freeze came along, it was a project the company had been working on and then was shut down by Bruce Wayne'a father. The body of the woman was stored at the company's lad and was found by Freeze. Freeze never got along with any one and no one really liked him. Because he was so lonely he fell in love with Nora and made up a fantasy in his head which he came to believe wholeheartedly.
Well, ain't that tragic.

WHAT KIND OF DEFORMATION DOES THE PENGUIN HAVE IN BATMAN'S RETURN?!
I believe his height is due to Fairbanks disease, judging by that Danny DeVito also has that disease which resulted in his height. His fingers are fused together because of Syndactyly disease. As for his mental state, he was abandoned by his parents and raised by penguins, so that says it all.
Jonah Steinfeld THANK YOU
The great mighty Samurott I LOVE PENGUINZZZZz
Ahhh, but he froze her with more than liquid nitrogen meaning there is a chance she's alive in there, like Arkham Knight's dlc "suggests". Meaning in not killing her he may also not be curing her
I mean, he's a blue man wearing a cold suit, and a pretty big one at that depending on where you're drawing him (There's a pretty big difference between the animated series Mr freeze's suit and Arkhamverse's suits) so there's no point in hiding his identity
Also, I’m pretty sure the media named him “Mr. Freeze”.
Comic book logic aside, news outlets IRL give criminals sensationalist nicknames all the time.
@@BlackCover95 I'm not actually sure, but I'd wager you're probably right it's not a name he gave himself
There is a highly scientific solution to Mr. Freeze's problem. Just tell Superman what is going on with Nora, have him fly against the Earth's rotation to go back in time to the point before Fries freezes Nora, and then explain the freezing treatment to him. Boom. Easy. Done. Totally doable. Or even better since Flash seems to run back in time constantly just have him do it.
KingChiggy or while Superman is there just have him lazer vision the cancer out because yea.
Then the weather would destroy the earth, but it's worth it
Time travel is tricky. You see, if a person went back in time for the sole purpose of solving an issue in the present, and they do solve it, then it ceases to be an issue in the present, meaning they had no reason you go back in time, meaning they didn't go back in time. Paradoxes.
people assume that time is a strict progression from cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective view point it's more of a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey... stuff
UNLESS... The DC universe runs on multiverse theory, which it probably does considering there was a "Crisis on Infinite Earths" series. Then all you'd have to do is get someone to zip back to the past, fix the problem, contract Dr. Fate to send you to that dimension, kill your time-clone Rick and Morty style, then live a nice long fulfilling life with your cancer-free wife. Sounds pretty good to me XD
But MatPat, there's more! Nora is unfrozen in some series, such as Arkham Knight, using science fiction technology that, as you pointed out, does not exist even in principle. But by reviving Nora from full cryo-stasis, would you also revive the cancer cells? Only you could have even taken a guess as to the answer!
2019 anyone?

In the animated series Nora isn't frozen because we can see her moving but if she is in deep sleep (dead) and Mr.Fries is trying to keep her body to not rotten like corpses and trying to get her new organs that function and get her donated blood he might be able to save her if she is in the cold substance during the operation
Certain liquids can stay liquid below the freezing temperature of water. She could be effectively frozen but still floating in a liquid.
Honestly, cancer is a serious problem. We have all lost someone to this disease... me- my grandfather. My friends mother. Thank you Bill Gates, for putting effort into raising awareness about cancer and other diseases. And thank you, FilmTheory, for also raising awareness about such diseases. :)
Teddy Bear i lost my grandfather to lung cancer
The thing is, no matter how we try there is no possible cure. It's basically our cells with such a miniscule difference, not even our own body can recognize it.
TetC Our body can recognize the difference just fine. It can be said that, at any one time, everyone on the entire golf coast could have cancer; it's only a problem when those cells get out of control. Still, I have respect for cancer; basically just a cell that says "I refuse to die! I am not minuscule! REBELLION!" It's an individual cell fighting for it's own survival.
I like how this comment has such a nice message, but the picture is this super grumpy marshmallow.
I drew this myself... I is a great drawer ;)
Knowing Arnie's Mr. Freeze the liquid could be anything and just be dyed blue to stick to the ice theme.
I like to think that he told someone his name was 'Mr. Fries' but they just assumed it was spelled like 'Freeze' and he didn't really care enough to correct them and that's how he got stuck with it.
Half life 3 is going to come out before the third part of the Doctor Who episodes MatPat made
maybe, they confirmed development on a half life like game, maybe that's hl3.
Should've been a thirds life series... Maybe then a third one would come to complete it.
Maybe MatPat dug too deep... Maybe he found the Time Lords, and was warned to back off!
I think valve could do a half-life 3, but they should wait another 10 years-ish, else the hype'll make it seen as inferior regardless. So, wait about as long as Shenmue 3. (Which has been announced for PS4)
a game "like" key word
I'm really depressed about my wife being sick and frozen.. So what do I do to make myself feel better? Make ice puns! - Mr Freeze
I thought fries are chips, since when is "fries" pronounced like freeze?
It’s German.
5:03, that’s what she said
perhaps he realizes that his hastiness has doomed her and that is why he removed his title of Dr.
Then again, this was the 70s 80s, same way people though gamma radiations could give you superpowers, cryogenics were a thing of the future ! that could do ANYTHING !
10 years and a couple scientific papers later... Ooooops !
Dear The Film Theorists,
The person you show in timeframe 4:43 is actually Edward nygma, who then becomes the riddler.
Please try to make this high on the comments section so more people see this.

EXCLAMATION POINT
It doesn't really matter enough to warrant top comment sooooo fuck off?
SenpaiSnipeFTW it is true
Project Rawrrr I believe it is as this is a channel about spreading knowledge
Now I really want MatPat to do a theory on how the heck did Shield was able to put both Steve and Bucky out of cryo.
But in Gotham, his way to cure Nora is to freeze her temporarily and then bring her back and has tried different ways of freezing to find that one that will bring his wife back without killing her in the process
4:45 That's Edward Nigma not Victor Fries...
Edward Nigma? As in E. Nigma? Geez, I wonder who could this possibly be?
Wayne don't worry, that's a glitch 😉
Even though she was revived in the end of "Batman Subzero" movie.
Not everything that happens in movies is actually possible lol
I know it's just that kind of point that someone else would make. But still I give this theory a lot of credit.
You should't
Well it's just a theory. A Film Theory!
She was cured in the comics as well. And was Piiiiiised off at Victor when she found out what he'd done and became a supervillain.
I like how Matt ends the episode by saying
*" B U T T H A Y "*
This comment deserves more likes.
You've ruined it so well... XD
When I first saw Dr. Fries, I thought
FRIES
not
FREEZE
Just me?
Do a film theory on Dexter Morgan explaining if he's a psychopath or sociopath, or possibly if he could have grown up normal with treatment.
CaptainConner Yessss!!!
There's no treatment for psychopathy/sociopathy.
Sociopathy could be supressed. Dexter's adoptive father Harry endorsed Dexter's killings and trained him to get away with murder for his own personal needs. Is it too far fetched to think that Dexter could've grown up relatively normal if not given Harry's code?
Weerwet According to AP psychology there is treatment.. psychotherapy or psychoanalytic and psychodynamic therapy (talk therapy) can be treatment for sociopathy and psychopathy (not the same things)
Alright, I think people are a little confused about my theory I'm suggesting. I'm suggesting a theory that Dexter Morgan could've grown up relatively normal had it not been for Harry glorifying killing.
I wish mat pat was my teacher cause I would actually pay attention and listen to him
Patricia Rodriguez I know right?! #TeacherPat
All of us would
Who wouldn't? Like he would be the best teacher ever
Know One wow. That’s terribly harsh
Same
Great content never knew this and really wanted to know also thanks for posting this on my birthday
You know, all this talk of cold doctors reminds me of how The Doctor can withstand very cold temperatures. Now that I think of that, you did cover this in your amazing Doctor Who theory. If only it was finished though.
Well that's the entire thing about Mr. Freeze, he's supposed to be one of the most tragic villains in the Batman mythos, it's just fact.
Unless you're talking about the New52 reboot of Mr Freeze where THEY FUCKED IT UP and made him just insane scientist that stalked and obsessed over Nora and made himself believe he loved her and that they were married... because why give a village a tragic complex backstory when instead you can turn him into a generic crazy person?
lOl "village" But I agree, many people are making villains crazy so they don't have to explain as much or make them very consistent.
Adam Napolitano yep, I will never forgive them for screwing up my favorite Bstman villain
2:36 life is strange when you say anything to anyone ever XD
Happy Christmas bro hope you have a great day
Your theory may hold weight, but, for your consideration Pulmonary Hypertension, fits all your criteria including, higher risk for drug abusers, genetic and has 4 stages. It is very, very rare, it can affect anyone, from child to adult. Breathing medication is needed and oxygen is needed in mid to late stages. Heart and lung transplant is only 'cure' right now. As for the glowing blue medication, look up remodulin. Scary stuff
Blue lips.. she has blue lips. That is a common symptom of pulmonary hypertension.
Is it genetic and non-contagious? Do they cough up blood?
For the glowing liquid, if so much blacklight is present as in freezes lair in Batman and Robin, I am quite sure a lot of things would start involuntarily glowing, maybe not every medication would start to glow, but this one sure did.
Oh you say the blacklight was not actually part of the movies reality and just a clever trick to make what ever was in that tubes glow so it looks like it glows on its own ... weeeeeeeeell, nuka cola anyone? XD
Is there a cure?
but also a symptom of hypothermia. and considering she is frozen i would not take blue lips as a definitive clue.
