    Gotham is full of things that can kill you--the Joker, Penguin, dirty cops, poor infrastructure--You name it! But there’s also the sort of danger with which we’re all familiar, like Disease. MacGregor’s Syndrome, the illness that plagues Mr. Freeze’s wife, is THE disease when it comes to the City of Gotham. This got me thinking: What is the real-world counterpart to MacGregor’s Syndrome and are there any promising treatments or cures? In this episode, I explore as much Batman Lore as I can to find out, and the answer will make your Blood Run Cold!

    The ironic thing is that in literally every comic that has Nora Fries cured, she turns out to be evil herself, and I mean *actually* evil, not just desperate like her husband is. One comic even has Mr. Freeze stop her by freezing her again.

  • @toasega
    @toasega Před 7 lety +825

    I was thinking that he calls himself MR. Freeze because he feels he's failed at everything (and lost everything).
    All of his training, his status as a Doctor, was not enough to save his wife. Then the accident destroyed almost every trace of the man he once was and his actions made it impossible to save his wife legally.
    He is now simply a man driven by two things; cold, unrelenting revenge, and the unending desire to cure and save his wife. As a criminal who kills people, he can no longer call himself a doctor. He is now "MR. Freeze."

  • @Exile_Sky
    @Exile_Sky Před 7 lety +340

    The big problem here is that Freeze DID perfect cryogenics* (sp: cryonics). He knew exactly how to freeze her and bring her back. That's why in every depiction of Nora Freis in the tube, she is floating "In liquid." She is not "Encased in Ice." Technically if you could get in there and not turn into a popcicle (assuming it has something to do with injections and treatment provided before being put in the tank) you'd likely find her skin malleable and the cells unbroken. We KNOW that you have to remove water from cells in order to safely freeze them without the cells rupturing. We DO have theories on how to do it. What we don't have is a practical method of removing water from the body, replacing it with a deep cold substitute in order to maintain cell stability and a method of reverting back. We have all the theory in the world about cryogenics, we just don't have any practical engineering surround it. Which is what I think makes Victor Freis so cool, he's not just smart, he's ridiculously smart. Just in applied engineering and not medical treatment.

    • @ScientistCat
      @ScientistCat Před 7 lety +28

      I've read about a technique in which doctors could delay a fatally ill/wounded person's death by temporarily replacing the blood plasma with some sorta cryogenic liquid. Dr Fries may have found a way to do it more permanently, perhaps a better liquid that allows gas and nutrient exchanges (O2 and nutrients go in, CO2 and other byproducts come out). I remember in Batman And Robin, there were bubbles in the liquid, and of course the tank needed power. One can easily presume, then, that his wife isn't quite an icicle as Mat assumes.

    • @SergeantAradir
      @SergeantAradir Před 7 lety +7

      Well, there's actually this one incident I heard where a guy was practically frozen and presumed dead, until they tried a new treatment or something where they took his blood, heated it and injected it back. He eventually came back to life, but they had to amputate his hands cuz it was too frozen I guess.

    • @teamhex
      @teamhex Před 7 lety +6

      Correct. In Batman Snow it shows his origin(I'm sure there's other slightly different origin stories, most batman villains are like that) and it shows that he did prefect the freezing process...however the program was done for a weapon(the freeze gun he uses). They re-calibrated his machines and he had already put his terminally ill wife in it. So basically he refuses to blame himself and blames the people that changed the settings. He goes crazy from there and sees his wife(who is in pieces on the floor)...who tells him to kill everyone involved in the project.

    Fun Fact: In the recent comics: Mr Freeze was able to restore Nora to life. However Nora’s mind was corrupted due a serum created by Lex Luthor, and she lashed out causing Victor to freeze himself in order to survive. So basically Nora become Mrs Freeze while her husband is now the one in a block of ice.

His lungs filled up with liquid so for Nora’s lungs to fill with blood is pretty spot on. 2. He got very frail so for Nora to start getting frail is also right. 3. My grandpa smoked so for her to use drugs or to smoke could be why then she has lung cancer. And 4. Cancer is in my family so for Nora to have cancer in her family could be why she has cancer.
    So your theory is right. Nora has cancer.

    Yeah, Mr. Freeze's character is a bit of a tragic one. Unlike most of Batman's foes, he's not entirely evil, just misguided. His wife was dying and he wanted to help her, so he thought he'd freeze her so that he could cure her. You can't argue with the fact that his heart was in the right place and he was only doing his duty as a devoted husband.

    • @Jasondfgd
      @Jasondfgd Před 7 lety +2

      baliyae in the new 52 D.C. Comics Nora is not really Freeze's wife. Freeze at one point worked for the Wayne enterprises and was fired by Bruce Wayne when he came back to Gotham and took control of the company. The woman had been frozen for a long time before Freeze came along, it was a project the company had been working on and then was shut down by Bruce Wayne'a father. The body of the woman was stored at the company's lad and was found by Freeze. Freeze never got along with any one and no one really liked him. Because he was so lonely he fell in love with Nora and made up a fantasy in his head which he came to believe wholeheartedly.

    Honestly, cancer is a serious problem. We have all lost someone to this disease... me- my grandfather. My friends mother. Thank you Bill Gates, for putting effort into raising awareness about cancer and other diseases. And thank you, FilmTheory, for also raising awareness about such diseases. :)

      The thing is, no matter how we try there is no possible cure. It's basically our cells with such a miniscule difference, not even our own body can recognize it.

    • @wegner7036
      @wegner7036 Před 7 lety

      TetC Our body can recognize the difference just fine. It can be said that, at any one time, everyone on the entire golf coast could have cancer; it's only a problem when those cells get out of control. Still, I have respect for cancer; basically just a cell that says "I refuse to die! I am not minuscule! REBELLION!" It's an individual cell fighting for it's own survival.

      Sociopathy could be supressed. Dexter's adoptive father Harry endorsed Dexter's killings and trained him to get away with murder for his own personal needs. Is it too far fetched to think that Dexter could've grown up relatively normal if not given Harry's code?

    Well that's the entire thing about Mr. Freeze, he's supposed to be one of the most tragic villains in the Batman mythos, it's just fact.
    Unless you're talking about the New52 reboot of Mr Freeze where THEY FUCKED IT UP and made him just insane scientist that stalked and obsessed over Nora and made himself believe he loved her and that they were married... because why give a village a tragic complex backstory when instead you can turn him into a generic crazy person?

    Your theory may hold weight, but, for your consideration Pulmonary Hypertension, fits all your criteria including, higher risk for drug abusers, genetic and has 4 stages. It is very, very rare, it can affect anyone, from child to adult. Breathing medication is needed and oxygen is needed in mid to late stages. Heart and lung transplant is only 'cure' right now. As for the glowing blue medication, look up remodulin. Scary stuff

      For the glowing liquid, if so much blacklight is present as in freezes lair in Batman and Robin, I am quite sure a lot of things would start involuntarily glowing, maybe not every medication would start to glow, but this one sure did.
      Oh you say the blacklight was not actually part of the movies reality and just a clever trick to make what ever was in that tubes glow so it looks like it glows on its own ... weeeeeeeeell, nuka cola anyone? XD
