  • GTA 4 had remarkable driving physics when compared to GTA 5 and a downgrade is something many Grand Theft Auto fans fear when thinking about the future GTA 6 technology regarding game vehicles, cars specifically. The pressure is on Rockstar Games.

Another fun fact to drive the point home: Open Wheel races (F1-like races) had a record player count when compared to other featured playlists. And it lasted a few good weeks. It's clear players like a challenge because these races involved taking care of your car because even simply losing your front wing would mean dropping multiple positions due to no grip, unless you pitted to repair. Players WANT a challenge!

The Mafia series use Illusion engine and it seems a lot more realistic than all of the GTA games, especially when car crashes are severely more fatal. There is some similarities between the driving physics of Mafia and GTA4, but I feel like Mafia just does it better.
That being said, I have a feeling GTA5 wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is if it had stayed on the realism path, especially online. I don't really have any issues with it but after replaying all of the GTA games recently, it was the thing that stood out the most to me, the driving physics seemingly downgraded between 4 and 5 and the game got a whole lot easier.
I've always thought that GTA SA is the best game in the series, but it would be freaking amazing with the same engine and physics as GTA4.

GTA 5's car damage is actually pretty good. No, not the deformation, that was heavily reduced, but the mechanical damage is pretty good. Wheels bend quite easily on some cars, plus they added fuel/oil leaks and radiator damage which causes the engine to overheat and massively reduces performance or makes the car undrivable, whereas in GTA 4, cars always retained the same performance until they stopped working. Unfortunately the handling is way too forgiving therefore you don't crash too often and damaging your vehicle isn't even a real risk, plus most people play online where new dlc cars are all actual tanks with zero damage model so these mechainics are almost always overlooked.

  • @harrymason5087
    @harrymason5087 Před 15 dny +1

GTA IVs was a good blend of Arcade and Realism to me, I wouldn’t say Rockstar were trying to go for full on realism because for example, jumps in GTA IV will never really destroy your car unless you go off from a weird angle, the car jump physics in IV are kind of weird, imagine GTA V’s air control except the game slowly tries to do it for you to put the car on all fours when landing, there is also the lack of damage, I could drive off a bridge, land with the grill facing the ground, and it will glue to the ground with only small dent to the front bumper rather than it being completely smashed and bouncing flipping to its roof since it landed almost on its front rather than bottom, the air control comparison I made earlier is kind of hard to notice but install a map mod with big jumps and you’ll notice how it slowly goes into trying to land on all fours

@J.PC.Designs that car can get up to 120 real easy and it handles like a dream when compared to 70mph in any car in gta iv. Hell, any car I've driven irl handles better than the cars in gta iv. The 2 subaru sedans, a 99 chevy tahoe, an 04 land rover, 99 nissan pathfinder, my 08 dodge van, a 96 camry, an 02 civic, a 2016 murano, a 2011 altima and a 2019 ford suv. So it's not like I haven't driven more than one car and none of them feel lile you're driving on ice 24/7 even at low speeds. On top of that, you don't get up to high speeds in gta iv often either so why even bring that up? I mean during the earliest versions of gta 5, car deformation was not as bad as it is now,
Wheel detaching was possible in the OG versions,
Two much damage and deformation on your vehicle caused your vehicle to stop working like if you damage your front corner of your car too much,
You can't take turns and it was quite challenging but in next gen versions like PS4 and PS5 also PC versions,
They dumped down these details for better fps and smooth gameplay which is quite sad

a note about FiveM from the guy who is actually working on FiveM:
the drift vehicles had nothing to do with the acquisition, it's simply a common misconception due to the timing and content available on FiveM. the drift handlings on FiveM were done with existing GTA 5 vehicle physics technology, by the community, editing the handling. nothing to do with FiveM team itself. Rockstar just made the handlings on their own. :)

Ye it's pretty sad the direction they decided to go with GTA5's physics, but there's a lot more factors that impacted that decision to downgrade it beyond just making it appeal to a larger market.
    (1) The developers were already pushing the limits with GTA5 in other aspects and there was not a lot they could do with hardware from 2005/2006(last gen consoles) the developers were saying how there's a lot of details in the first trailer that never made it to the final game simply because they caused it to run so slow(look at the foliage for example), the driving and other physics in GTA4 were very intensive and unoptimized(just look at how it runs on PC) and would just cause the game to be even slower or not run at all.
    (2) Tons of people cherish the physics now, but they were hated before GTA5 released(just look at gta forums pre 2012 lol) combined with the previous fact it is clear why they massively downgraded it compared to other aspects.
    (3) Possibly a gameplay and stylistic decision, the realistic driving fits the tight streets of liberty city, while the arcade driving of 5 better suits the wide and long roads of los santos. If you swapped the driving mechanics using mods neither game would feel right and it wouldn't be fun to play.
Agree with the last part tho, really hope they can find some middle ground for GTA6. The driving felt like you were in a boat even if you were in an AWD sports car in GTA4, and it felt like you were glued to the ground even driving an RV in GTA5, from the leaks the deformation looks really good but can't make a judgement on the physics yet.

IV’s driving is bad because they tried too hard to be realistic and really made it worse. It’s crazy understeer and shit suspension all around. The only decent handling car is the Sultan. I’ve even seen cars in the slums handle better. While V’s handling is also ass, it’s better feeling tbh. The last BEST handling was GTA SA’s
The best deformation would be the day one GTA V (1.00) it had car parts breaking off and a similar level of deformation to IV’s

I have been playing GTA since the very first one on the PS1, I have spent hours or even years for each GTA and I can clearly say that GTA IV is one of the most boring games in the series, wanting to make a very realistic game ends up with a boring game, and people just can't understand that a realistic game doesn't mean a good game. prefer a gta not realistic but fun than a gta realistic but boring and for me GTA V made the right choice a balance between fun and realistic certainly far from being perfect but already very satisfying, So please stop criticizing GTA V by saying that GTA IV is much better when it is quite the opposite and especially that the GTA game series originally before being realistic games their main goal it's about being fun games.

GTA 5’s driving physics were more satisfying and more enjoyable BY FAR imo. Ultra realistic doesn’t always mean good. Forza/GT/assetto corsa is good realistic and tries to be as true to life as possible. GTA 4 feels terrible in comparison; overly bouncy suspensions, terrible traction, and did you seriously show off a car getting stopped by a curb as a highlight of GTA 4 physics? In gta 4 I would always go look to steal a turismo of infernus because those were the only cars in the game that felt remotely good. I remember getting on 5 for the first time and realizing how much better the handling felt. Driving didn’t feel cumbersome, taking corners felt great, the suspension didn’t bounce over everything, made driving across the map, and especially doing races, really satisfying. Like I seriously enjoy GTA V racing in a competitive lobby more than forza horizon atp. 4 was a great display of the engine’s capabilities, but not a great implementation in game. It’s like if you gave cars in gta beam ng physics where rolling your car will make it unusable and if you jumped off a roof instead of climbing a ladder you rolled your ankle so now you can’t run. The game would kinda suck and not be as playable, but it’s more realistic so they should just go ahead and add it right?

On a retrospective, personally (but I see daily more and more people agreeing) GTA V was the worse of the series. If I had to chose what GTA should I play from start to finish for life I would chose any GTA that came out before V. And I finished V multiple times on multiple platforms, fuck, I even got a 2 copies for xbox360, 2 for ps4 and one for steam too. But its just smoke and mirrors, and once the curtains falls its over for most people - and the current IV video trend on youtube thats been going on for months now proves it.

Gta 4’s driving physics being fun and gta 4’s driving physics being realistic are two massively different things .. fun ? Subjective but ultimately I agree .. realistic ? Not even close , every car (AND BIKE) slides like they’re in a drift show , it doesn’t matter what kind of car or bike it is ... now if we want to compare , if we’re being fair and honest gta V is the clear winner here (I’m not saying it doesn’t have flaws and I’m not saying you can’t enjoy gta 4’s I’m just saying fair is fair ) and I’ll make an example to make my point : gta online for all it’s flaws (of which there are many) had a lot of fun races ( especially community created and stunt races and those tron modes were fun too ) now could you imagine doing all those races with them loops and wall rides and tightropes with gta 4’s driving physics ??? If you say yes , you are delusional my friend

  • @tailsfox5707

I think GTA 4 car physics felt realistic and not turning on a dime on every corner and loved the car damage in that game.
GTA 5 car physics felt like a downgrade where every car felt like could turn a corner way too easily and car damage looked like you hit a wall at low speed leaving barely any damage to the car. Other things I disliked about GTA 5 car physics is cars exploding too easily on impact when landing in the wrong angle causing unfair deaths.
The last thing I disliked about GTA 5 is flipped over cars can be rolled back on its wheels with a simple movement of joystick or button mashes creating this get out of jail card situation when cops try to swarm your flipped over car.

The games to me are fun when you can just tool around in a car for hours and not come to a full stop when turning or when I make a slight bump into another car. (yes, I'm exaggerating some)
I feel that the PS2 era games were far more fun than IV to drive around in, and V brought it back to the more "arcady" fun that the GTA series is known for.

see, i respect this approach. its about preference. you dont complain about the realism per se, you simply know you didnt like it as much as you did GTA 5. and the drifting in GTA 5 is something I, for example, love way more over the driving in GTA 4. i just wish that attention to detail that the FiveM team applied to their mechanics was done the same way by Rockstar on release

i agree that the floaty, bouncy handeling of the cars doesnt work… for all cars. for the next game i would like that floaty handling from 4 to apply to the cars that actually handle like that. a new cadillac suv should not feel the same to drive and have the same suspension as a massive 70’s cadilac sedan. i think a lot of people forget that while gta 4s driving physics are realistic, not all cars suspension is supposed to look like that lol. if you swerve side to side in a top heavy car it should wobble and even roll over but in iv they all sway and float like a boat.
