The most important aspect of Grand Theft Auto is the driving. So when that element of the game is lacking, the game suffers tremendously. GTA V is the most successful GTA ever made, likely because it was built- by design - to be easily accessible to almost everyone. That meant many great features we had seen in the previous installment, GTA IV, had been either dialed back, or removed entirely. This video is meant to serve as an analysis on what makes the Arcade Nature of GTA V’s driving physics un-enjoyable.

GTAIV is the only game that can moonlight as a BeamNG even way back in 2008, whilst also being an open world TPS… and people will still call it trash.
It’s about time someone is finally talking about the sim racing qualities of GTAIV. IMO it’s one of the most impressive things about it. As someone who only sim raced before trying normal games it was an indication on how well crafted GTAIV was. Its existence is a technical miracle.
Whilst GTAIV isn’t ’completely realistic’, it clearly made the design choices to make it the most realistic city driving simulator and executed it perfectly whilst maintaining the fun risk reward factor. GTAV on the other hand didn’t try on either aspect, makes you wonder what the design intent was.

The main reason there’s a lack of planes in GTA 4, is because the map could be too quickly traversed if they had planes or jets.
Helicopters could get you from the northeast side to the southwest side in less than 2 minutes at altitude. Imagine using a plane instead…

    • @MEGALODONGERS
      @MEGALODONGERS Před 22 dny +8

I actually have to wonder if it was even moreso due to issues Rockstar Games had internally with plane physics and/or collision. The common explanation for GTA IV not having manned planes is that there's only one airport along with the map being too small.
However, Rockstar Games had this same issue prior to GTA IV with GTA VC (which has an even smaller map). Their solution to the issue was a boat plane (Skimmer). The Skimmer could have worked quite well in GTA IV considering the amount of water, piers/docks, and the ability to swim.
Also, the Cessna 152 (real life counterpart of the Dodo/Skimmer) has a top speed of 126 mph while the UH-60 Black Hawk (real life counterpart of the Annihilator) has a top speed of 183 mph. So, the suggested boat plane wouldn't be too fast. Although, the speed gap between the two would ideally be closed up a bit in-game to allow for better utility of the plane that's unable to make vertical takeoffs and landings (unlike a helicopter).

V's driving did its job well for a bit but it simply doesn't work long term. VI definitely needs some sort of middle ground or maybe even an option to change your handling so people can fine tune their experiences.

Something I always wanted was a "seatbelt" option for getting flung out of cars, putting on the seatbelt could be similar to how you put on a helmet on a motorcycle, you just wait parked a few seconds and it's on, though could also be an interaction when in a car. When on you can't get flung out and you take a bit less crash damage but you can't "jump out" a moving car as a tradeoff.
That said they should really also change how bailing from a car or bike works, instead of just rolling uncontrollably you should have a way to stop or catch yourself somehow, maybe in exchange for taking more damage. That way bailing could actually be useful again as right now it pretty much just carries you the same distance your vehicles travels after bailing anyway :P

It shouldn't be something that's toned down to be as easy as possible to get you from A to B, cars should be a big part of the gameplay too.

Every intersection having a red light runner who would always happen to slow down or speed up depending on how or if you swerved. Every road with multiple lanes always happens to have the car that wants to change lane the second you come to pass them. 16:42 You could always take another car and ram your old one to unflip it.
17:26 You can control your car mid air in GTA IV as well. Holding handbrake (or was it gas+brake, not sure which) also changes the type of air control (so you can actually turn the car left or right instead of rolling it).
28:41 GTA IV also has curb and wiggle boosting, as well as all the speed boosts that come from all the tiny bumps in the road.
32:44 They need to find a mid point between San Andreas and IV, not V. It was a big missed opportunity to not talk about San Andreas and what it did right. V's driving setup is pretty much downgraded San Andreas driving, as San Andreas had a much better balance of arcade and realism than V. Body roll actually existed and was properly applied to correct vehicle types. Cars of the same type had more handling variety between them. To the video topic itself (i haven't watched the vid yet): i think a mix of GTA 4 and GTA 5 driving for GTA 6 would be the sweatspot. GTA 4s physics were too soft and GTA Vs too stiff. Also the whole flipping your car back up or steering in the air is kinda goofy. It had also other issues like when vehicles land on the roof or front end after a jump, they tend to explode which makes no sense. Hypercars and Sports cars should also be faster than in the previous games and also require more skill (for example, they could be easier to spin out, at least RWD cars). The addition of being able to flip your car around when landing on the roof was like the helping hand to a cry for help. I remember how frustrating it always was having a sick car in GTA SA and then flipping it.

If you do this with all four wheels, the car goes faster. Combined with blowing out the tires, you can reach high speeds.
While it's unrelated, a fun lesser known glitch is the shipping container glitch. If you do it in multiplayer while hanging onto it, it moves so fast that it can launch you above the sky cap or across the city so fast that it looks like you teleported.

They marketed it as improved damage while actually decreasing the amount allowed to the cockpit area making the cars only like 20% deformable in the front and back. I was so disappointed when the next gen version came out. What’s annoying is they could’ve come up with so many alternatives like character ducking when roof is damaged, or swapping first person damage as a separate damage model like racedriver Grid where once you go third person the actual damage is shown, or tweaking deformation to a certain level, yet they went with the laziest option of completely removing damage. Hopefully 6 has better solutions to damage and actually adds life to physics in the way cars behave. I could drive around for hours in IV whereas V felt like a lifeless chore.

Personally I love driving around in IV trying to pull off crazy stunts, I've been playing around with a first person mod for a few years and it's quite a different experience, it makes bikes feel way better, you are more conscious of the space they occupy on the road and how you can use that to your advantage either driving through alleyways or jumping off staircases with them. The adrenaline it makes me feel is hard to describe I'd rather just recommend everyone goes and tries it

I wanted to mention something about the traffic getting in front of you while you're driving. I know it seems annoying, but to be honest with you that has been a part of rock star's driving philosophy since I can remember as far back as midnight club two. When you would drive on the wrong side of the highway. Cars would basically swerve to get out of your way, but as a result would sometimes swerve right into you. They even do it in red dead redemption two with the horses. Sometimes somebody is riding, and they'll just turn their horse in front of you.

4's simply better because of the impact, depth and how the player deals with it. Simple as that. Only middle point that needs to be found here is how do you make IV's driving less extreme. IV itself isn't near as extreme as other simulations but they could tone it down a bit for VI i guess. More lessons need to be taken from IV than V is what I'm saying, i just don't want to be bored while driving ok? IV ruined every other GTA driving for me because of how much more involved i was in it. I think mid air control is good btw, same with car flipping

I think in gta 6 they should handle more closely to gta 4 but when you add wings and splitters it increases the downforce value or stiffer suspension that reduces body roll and brings them closer to gta v handling at the expense of top end speed due to more drag and makes the car more sensitive to bumps due to the stiffer suspension. In the end it would allow you to tune your cars to have a closer handling model to what you personally prefer.

I don't think physics should be an option. The game should have consistent physics and damage models.
However, the option I have yet to see people mention is vehicle modifications. That's one of the main points in GTA V. Vehicle customization. GTA V did it wrong though by not giving much for options and instead there were just objectively better modifications.
Instead, id suggest lots of modification options but all with tradeoffs.
Roll cage increases damage resistance and reduces player damage taken in crashes, but also adds a lot of weight.
Tires should affect how the vehicle handles on different terrain.
Vehicle pitch can already be controlled in-air in real life by accelerating/decelerating to a limited degree, but active aero and compressed air nozzles could give realistic-ish methods of controlling a vehicles attitude in-air.
If GTA VI gives everyone options with tradeoffs instead of just better options, it would be a lot more interesting.
As is, instead of every vehicle in GTA V having a use, 90% of the time, all you need is the oppressor mk 2.

Gta4 was way to extreme and Gta5 is too little
car damage would have to be based on how much armor you buy for your personal vehicle, and handling off your upgrades
it would make stealing cars off the streets much more of a risk and a last resort and much difficult to get away, the plus side of using cars off the streets means you can ditch them easily

Sure it was heavier and swayed like branches in a high wind but I found that despite it being more challenging it was still very fun to drive and far, far more rewarding when I managed to pull off high speed maneuvers and not crash it into something. With V I found everything felt "cheap" to me. I thought initially that the instantaneous turning was just tutorial mode and that it would ease the player into the "real" driving physics but that obviously never happened and when I discovered that you could artificially turn and shift the direction and spin of the car mid-air so easily plus being able to make a static upside down car self-right... Took alot of the enjoyment out of driving very quickly for me.
