- Today we look back through the game files and explore how Karazhan has evolved from the very first alpha builds to what we have today. The main focus will lie on Alpha-Wod since we still not know for sure to what extent Karazhan will be present in Legion. This is the evolution of Medivh's Tower. Enjoy!

For me Karazhan is one of the best looking place in whole game. Karazhan looks exactly how it should look: Old mysterious tower of crazy wizard with tons of secrets.

It brings tears to my eyes knowing that he never got to see how much Karazhan we got in Legion...rest in peace...
I think he did. He said in a video how he had played his mage a lot in Legion. Karazhan was added in patch 7.1, in october 2016. Hayven passed away in march 2017.
So i belive he got to see it. Just never got to make a video about it.
His last video, i mean HIS last video, not the one where his family anounced his passing away, was published in march 7 2017. So he was active and well a least up until the end of february.
I think about it a lot. How i would have loved a video about the new Karazhan from him. And the video about the warlock epic mount quest would be the next one to appear in his channel and that is my favorite questline of all times. But wasn't mean to be. But it comforts me a little to think that, while he may have not had the chance to make a video about the new Karazhan, at least he got to experience it, and that's what matters most imo.
*HOLY CRAP!* The first version of the tower is so huge, like what? 5 or 7 times bigger and higher than the current one? If that made into the current game we would probably be able to see it from Stormwind just thinking about it make it sound so freaking epic!
I'm so sad we didn't got this tower it look way more epic and evil.

The outside of teh alpha tower looks so cool, inside of the one we got is just amazing , 2nd best raid after Ulduar

I agree with you about the crypt. Secret places in video games are so cool. I was always nervous when I visited some of the places cuz I thought I could get banned. Once I saw a troll (GM) on top of Ironforge, he targeted me and turned invisible, it was really scary. BTW you make really good video, keep them up :)

For the Chess Event, someone posted a solo guide on how to do it (Can be found on Wowhead). It usually works for me, only failed once or twice because I fucked up, but as far as I know it's a pretty good place;
1. Take control of your King piece and use the Bloodlust ability. If my memory is correct, the King should be using the ability automatically everytime the CD is reset. If not, then have Medivh reset the pieces and skip to Step 2.
2. Move the Pawns in front of both your Knights and move your Rooks (Elementals for Alliance, Daemons for Horde) to where they were so their AoE is in the primary area of the battle.
3. Move the Pawns in front of your King, and Queen if necessary, so you can move them once Medivh cheats. Other than that, don't move them; the enemy King will eventually come to you.
4. Take control of your Queen and proceed to attack the enemy King. Contrary to real world Chess; the King is the most powerful piece albeit only has the melee attack, so don't bother taking control of him unless he needs to move. Since this applies to both Kings, you can also take control of one of your Bishops (If they're still in play) and heal your King - unless you need to, DO NOT wait for the CD to reset and use it again, especially if the enemy King is fighting your's, as your Queen (You) needs to aid the King, and both of them attacking it will outdo the healing the enemy Bishops do for their King.
If this doesn't work for you, feel free to tell me what you do, I wouldn't mind doing something new the next time I come do the Chess Event.

Perfection like always mate! I remember doing the q-chain so that I could start farming that bloody horse.... moments after I was done, they took the epic quests away. So glad I got to experience them, in a time when things was a little bit different (and a little bit better) Keep them coming mate!
That alpha tower was enormous, look how high above the mountains it stretched!
7:08 On the topic of smiley faces in wow, I once saw a bubble in Zangarmarsh float past my screen that wasn't textured like any other bubbles (under water) but instead was a distinct round smiley face.

Apparently the entrance is going to be in a different place than the original raid entrance. So the dungeon and the raid will co-exist.

the fact that they said it might be a 5 man instance my face dropped... I love Karazhan for all that is was, ever since TBC to now I still visit it to farm it just to get old memories back.. IF they do bring it back.. man they better not destroy it.. I swear if they do im done with WoW. Its bad enough that WoD was not as good as it could of been.
Still the best Raid ever for me in this game. I love this video, and it would be a fact to think about starting again with wow just for Karazhan.

Its great how the developers involved in WOD were able to mess around with players who were snooping around the game file for information, all while not providing any content for the actual game.
Please do not forget that the original idea for World of Warcraft was that would we also have uninstanced raid zones like Everquest 2. A prime example for this is Ahn'Qiraji. That later just became a instanced raid dungeon.
Lets just hope they won't kill off the old Karazhan like they did with Zul'Gurub
+Yogiz Pretty sure they won't. They really do know how much people love the old raid, and they've seen the kind of response they get when they did the "Kharazan Restoration" map (The subreddit and forums filled up with worried players). So yeah, they'll probably include a new section of the tower or something, but definitely not replace a legendary raid with a 5 man.
Writer Shard Well they killed Zul'Gurub, and that place was loved too. But I hope you are right.

ZG/ZA only have one instance portal, which is why it was replaced. Kara has several portals, one of which is not accessible and in theory could be used rather than replacing the current instanced version.
Ink Dragon Well I doubt it's hard to make an option that lets you pick what lvl of instance you wan't to join. Right now we have 10/25 man, and Normal. HC and Mythic. So just make a "Classic" mode of those old instances.
the only problem with that is for ZA/ZG they didn't just add a new mode, they completely redid the instance. From my understanding there are two different maps for it now and as far as I know there is no instance portal that can yet take you to an alternate map. While I would love to see a return of the old raid version, they would have to either need to rework how instances work to allow connections to multiple maps(unlikely), retool the current version for a lower level(non-classic), or just add a second portal somewhere else to allow access to older content(CoT seems like a good place). While two of the three options are feasible in the labor department for the devs, they would still need to retool some of the drops. Since they no longer want players to have access to the original mounts that dropped from them.

Great video. I had no idea the crypts were accessible and once potentially another instance or even that Karazhan was in the game in alpha but never opened. Probably explains why the dungeon quality is more inline with vanilla than TBC...
Along with vanilla's scholomance, probably my favorite instance in WoW.

It was actually intended to be Tier 4, after Naxx and before TBC launched. You used to be able to enter it as well through instanced ZG, via walljumping

Karazhan my first and only real raid I went from first to last boss in a progression raid. I really wish theyd bring this feel back to raids because it was really satisfying to get a piece of loot because it was hard to get but it was a fun cooperative process without the mechanics being too difficult to understand or needing addons really.
RIP Hayven. You are sorely missed.

FIRST! I wasn't around during this time, but my parents loved this X-Pac. This X-Pac finally allowed them to raid! It was when the guild we are currently in was created. They have so many memories of Karazhan, it was their first raid, we have an inside joke about it, and again, it was when our guild was made!

I have been watching you for a while, and I too got my first taste exploring when I first got into the Karazhan Crypts on a live vanilla server. Shortly after, I got into CoT and then Hyjal. Anyway, I love your videos because you do what I no longer have time for, thank you so much! Also, I just cant stand it anymore.... do you have and playlists or lists of music that you use for your videos? They are amazing! I have all of the in game music but I love the other songs you use for your videos. Thank you again so much for all of your work

Clearly was going to be a Vanilla raid but they decided to go ahead with the Burning Crusade. Notice how a lot of Karazhan drops are all Dreanor/Outland related items like Legacy and Gorehowl, items that have no reason to be in Karazhan.
The same can be said for Naxx 25, where a lot of item models are all viking/Nordic themed which we can assume were for the Utgarde Keep raid that was never made

I like what they were going for in alpha: an entirely indoor zone. quite ambitious. if they ever revamp eastern kingdoms they should give it another shot but combine it with today's design.
I was lucky enough to get the ripper all the way back then, still my most prized item in the game.
I am honestly a little bit sad that they never let the Karazhan raid be a Vanilla instance, while the TBC version was amazing, I can't help but feel there could have been some very interesting changes to the game overall, given that had been the case.
Apart from that, your videoes are amazing, keep up the good work, your channel is highly underrated!

Weird stuff. I didn't realize they actually kept old versions of the areas off-map like that. Presumably in case they wanted a base to look at when redesigning it.

The latest beta build of Legion has Dalaran floating above Karazhan and inside this Dalaran is Jaina. No idea if its just devs trolling or what. (Jaina is not present in the normal Broken isles Dalaran).
In before Kara becomes the next Maraad, constantly being told it's worth something grand in the next expac but then it's just used to generate hype.
It would've been cool to clean out Karazhan during WoD and have the top of the tower (or some other part of it) be the Mage Class Hall, since I don't feel that deep lore connection to the Hall of the Guardian.
