  • Scholomance used to be a much bigger dungeon than it is today, similar to old Sunken Temple or UBRS. Today, we will take a look at how the school of necromancy has changed from vanilla to the revamp. Enjoy!

    Scholomance was one of the few dungeons I wasn't able to play through in Vanilla. After watching this video, it boggles my mind to see how much great content was cut. The atmosphere was completely destroyed and now it looks more like a school for Scooby Doo villains.

      watching the footage of the old dungeon brought back a lot of memories of vanilla death, vanilla is often viewed through rose colored goggles but certainly was not lacking in depth, content, mystery, challenge and reward.

    You forgot to mention that in the Laboratory was an Alchemy table that was used by alchemists to create flasks. During Vanilla WoW, this was one of only two tables in the game, the other being midway through the Blackwing Lair Raid. This meant the only viable way of crafting flasks as an Alchemist was to run Scholomance whenever you had the required materials. This also made the already expensive consumable even more costlier.

      +Derrick Jee There is a charm to simple things being difficult and tedious. It makes the end result more satisfying and then when you use the fruits of your tedious labor to finally accomplish something epic, it makes it that much more awesome. Today, mundane quests have been made epic and raid boss kills are routine.

      @@Derrickstare The amusing thing is that 4 years later I'm sitting in a game where all bosses on release are destroyed the day of release. The problem we had back then was 1) the majority of players had no idea what they were doing and 2) There were so many secrets to uncover we never found them in the 2 years we had from release. Today everything is known and all the players are experienced. So it was only insanely difficult because it was a brand new type of game that was so enormous with so little time to finish the journey through it.

      deenman23 LFG que ruined long dungeons. LFG was created to reduce downtime. Then people would leave the long 5 mans when they que'ed in. It was so bad blizzard handed out rewards just for finishing it. While back in vanilla you needed xy or z boss for gear. Especially for the 0 and .5 gear. Then again most low end raids/dungeons took us 2-3 hours. Most of that time was waiting for a 9th or 10th person for the last boss and the group didn't have a warlock.

    I miss the old Scholomance, but I think the new iteration lives up to the original pretty well.
    The concept used for the dungeon is fantastic, and I'm glad it was brought up to date in MoP. If you clear it out and just walk around admiring every room, it's a very beautiful and creepy dungeon. The grand ceilings (angle your camera upwards in the rooms of this place, you will NOT be disappointed), the rooms off to the side (as their meant to see) that give it a sense of larger scale, and even the bosses are great.
    All that said, I really wish that a revamp didn't remove the original. I've always wished they would open up a Caverns of Time wing to allow access to the pre-revamp dungeons. (WC, RFC, RFK, RFD, BFD, UBRS, DM, SFK, ST, ZG, ZA, and Naxx). Even if it didn't offer the rewards, it's just sad that dungeons that were iconic in their time are now irreversibly changed.

  • @General_Cartman_Lee
    @General_Cartman_Lee Před 8 lety +8

    As always everything has it's pros and cons.
    Yes, the older longer dungeons created an epic experience, I remember spending two hours in the Deadmines and it took one hour to get pulled through the Sunken Temple by a level 60 Paladin.
    But the downside was that I did not even visit most dungeons because it took so much time and even searching for a group took so long that leveling in BC times (when I started playing WoW) was faster without doing dungeons.

    • @Panzerkuchen
      @Panzerkuchen Před 8 lety

      +General Cartman Lee It was never faster to level in dungeons, thats because dungeons where to get gear (ofcourse they did give you a nice experience boost if you had all the quest). So they would make the overal leveling experience easier if you got a few pieces of gear.

    • @supermeuhmeuh
      @supermeuhmeuh Před 8 lety

      +General Cartman Lee i think they adjusted a lot of the quest rewards in TBC (not sure) but in vanilla the big majority of quests (like 95% of them) would either give you a bit of money, potions, or a green item in the best case. The only option to get blue gear was dungeon quests or dungeon drops, that's why you'd see Allys going through the whole continent to run scarlet monastery or SFK, despite how long it would be to 1. find people and 2. actually WALK there

    • @General_Cartman_Lee
      @General_Cartman_Lee Před 8 lety

      supermeuhmeuh The quest rewards in the low level content only changed with Cataclysm. But changes to the classes with and after WotLK and the introduction of heirlooms made leveling much easier so there was not even the need for better equipment apart from what you get as quest reward.
      I would have really liked to have the dungeon finder in the early days of WoW (before WotLK), then I would probably have visited more dungeons while leveling.

    • @Panzerkuchen
      @Panzerkuchen Před 8 lety

      General Cartman Lee
      Actualy thats not true they changed and updated a lot of items over time. Giving it better stats sometimes even upograding it from a magic to a rare item and give items better itemization. Some of this already even occured in vanilla ( a good example that i can think of is the seal of wrynn). So q rewards were already a lot better before cata, not to mention the other changes to the talent trees and what not that made the game easier and made you do a lot more dmg overal.

    • @supermeuhmeuh
      @supermeuhmeuh Před 8 lety

      General Cartman Lee although I understand why so many people like the convenience of it, I've never liked MM for dungeons. To each his own I guess. I'm probably in the minority here but I always loved travelling, socializing, all that stuff wasn't as convenient but it created immersion and felt really natural.
      Nowadays any MMO I play is full of convenience and teleporting everywhere, nothing makes much sense and it constantly reminds me I'm just playing a video game. It all depends on what you're looking for I guess, the argument that "when i'm travelling i'm not playing and wasting my time" is really bad imo, whatever you're doing in the game, you're always playing. If you're just looking to kill mobs over and over without interruption you should be playing Diablo or beat em all games. For me, travelling, socializing to form groups, exploring, searching everywhere for a quest item, all this stuff is a real part of the game, when you take these pieces away the puzzle no longer makes sense and becomes boring af.

      More often than not people would already state which bosses would be skipped even before entering the dungeon. It was not uncommon to have to bribe people to kill a boss that would only drop a gear for your class. And you better hope the people wouldnt die on said boss or else they would force you to pay their repair costs as well.

Back in the day there was no dungeon finder so if u need something from a dungeon u have to park ur butt in IF and wait for someone to shout "LF1M DPS Scholo, then we go." And then, you literally go from IF to Scholo the long way, ie, buy a gryphon flight. Thanks for the memories.

    I remember spending an entire night in Scholomance with some friends. That dungeon took a while way back when. I was in the process of leveling to 70 when I first ventured into Scholo since I couldn't find any groups to do it with due to Burning Crusade being so close to release. I did finish the quest to get my Charger though. That was still the only way to acquire it at the time.

    Very interesting! I really miss the old dungeons. Sunken Temple, Scholo, Stratt, and all the dungeons in Blackrock. So miserably they were remaid. Those trashpacks that could kill the whole party if you not were cautious and all the old bosses. I am glad I played in Vanilla and have done them then. I remember the first time i was in ST after it was remaid and couldn´t find the entrance. I met another player down there, and we were both totally confuced, and we had both missed the today entrance, as we both didn´t exspect it to be so early on the way.

    as usual top notch video! I only started playing since cata but one of the reasons I didn't like tanking old dungeons is that I often get completely confused as to where to go to finish the dungeon, and in that sense I'm kinda glad they linearised it. (all the blackrock mountain dungeons were horrible) the bit just before you ding level 60(I think) is the worst part as all the dungeons involved were mazes. I don't really mind optional bosses and I think they could be fun, I'd actually really like the maps to have clickable places were one corridor leads to another, especially when the old dungeons were horrendously multi-layered. simply looking at the maps really didn't help orientate new people. so I guess that's why they revamped some of the old dungeons!

    I much prefer the old instance. Items have been taken away as well as quests. You can no longer see the Caer Darrow ghosts unless you still have a special item. This is a bit heartbreaking as a lover of the lore of the game. Thanks for the video!

    The area where you said Pallys did their charger quest (Rattlegore's area) is also where Shammys had a class quest too. There was also no mention that the viewing room in old scholo featured neutral students unless you used the dawn's gambit which made the room aggro and enabled more bosses to be fought.

      +yacine isthemastah actually no that was just Nostralius and modern players. I played a ret pally and a enh shaman in vanilla and had zero problems getting into groups and raiding up to bwl. On nostralious however, if your not a mage playing a spec you took from reddit might as well gtfo. Nostralious was/is not vanilla, but its close enough. But I will agree it was very unbalanced talant, class and gear wise(no ret/holy/prot specific gear for example).

    • @DarkScorpion64
      @DarkScorpion64 Před 7 lety +1

      Non-traditional specs were only allowed in the very very beginning when nobody knew what they were doing and people were still experimenting. Right before Blackwing Lair hit theorycrafting was already in full force and you either followed the only accepted build for your class or you gtfo. If you were allowed to raid as a ret pally in vanilla consider yourself very very lucky.

    • @kabrozkabroz

      You don't need "vanilla" back to get this experience, what you need is for the dev's to actually make the game expansive and with a more stiff learning curve again.
      I consider it stupid that heirlooms make you like 10x as powerful as you're supposed to be. Imo they should just give you a good item level for the level they've matched... not a legendary item level where I can solo quest bosses 8 levels higher than me

    Since the Cataclysm-Expansion Scholomance was changed to be linear, but they made up for it greatly by making all five encounters interesting and very well scripted, with an engaging storyline, voice-overs and more strategy involved. The overall aesthetic has improved.
    This is very important, because on your way to level 100 you are only seeing scholomance once or twice in your levelling process. They could have taken the easy road and just cut down the instance to a linear progression, but they got out of their way to improve the story and atmosphere of the dungeon, making it similar to the usual dungeons in WoW.
    Many People love to hate on Blizzard and the WoW Dev team. I want to tell you something: If you wanted to keep the spirit of WoW (Themepark-MMO!), you would have made the same decisions when introducing new content to the world!
    WOW has always been a streamlined experience with going from quest hub to quest hub, quite the opposite to eg. Everquest or Star Wars Galaxies. Thats why it was so popular: It was EASY to play in that you knew what you had to do and where you needed to go.
    The old scholomance wasnt really that good in my opinion. Nostalgia is a heavy factor in all the rage here. It was quite complicated and the encounters were mostly lame (with a few annoying exceptions like the teleportation in the headmaster fight). If you want to stray around the vast open World gives you plenty of options.
    BUT:
    Vanilla Scholomance was ok the way it was, because you were expected to go there more often. After vanilla it was only an (granted: nice looking) annoyance. It wasnt engame content and you would fokus on outworld instead.
    So please, all you enraged and bitter spirits: Calm down, will you? Things change. New stuff get added. Old stuff must adapt. You still have your Endgame content you can enjoy. You do not enjoy it? Quit playing then.

    I started playing again a month or so ago. Was kinda sad seeing the old dungeons revamped while levelling up and Scholomance in particular. This place used to be this amazing epic place .. even while questing you would hear of it and it became a legendary place you felt you had to go to and experience. It never disappointed because there were so many bosses and different directions you could go it. Last time I did it was just running around soloing content and could spend a bunch of time there so its sad that isn't around anymore. I guess you can tell I like the original instance better.

    All of the old content beats the new "revamped" versions. I wish Blizz would listen to their long time players and UnRevamp these dungeons and other content. Give new players a reason to revisit the "old worlds" and see the awesomeness that drew so many to the game, and kept us here. FYI, you can get into the summoning balcony by flying around the mountain and onto the balcony from the outside. Makes for some really kewl and erie screenshots.

Although I do have some nostalgia for the new version, back when I'd chain farm heroics for valour, I feel the old one better conveys the dark, disturbing and somewhat disgusting nature of the old scholomance. The new one, although still a little creepy, just seems a bit tame.
