In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones | Arundhati Roy | 50 Films I Love | Film Companion

  • This is a National Award-winning film directed by Pradip Krishen, written by Arundhati Roy and produced by - believe it or not - Doordarshan in 1989. This is a story about the rawness and vulnerability of youth and Pradip narrates it with warmth and immense affection.
Did I mention that it also stars Shah Rukh Khan? This was his first scene ever in a film.

I am from the same architecture school this movie was shot in. The same school Arundhati and Pradip Krishnan are from. Even after 4 decades of making this film, the flavor of the school hasn't changed and that's why it's a Bible for every student in the architecture school. My hostel room was the same one that Annie lives in. It brings back wonderful memories. Thank you Anupama for bringing it out to your non-architectural audience.

Abcd Efg The movie is based on fiction. But each character existed in reality. Whether it was the gay Shahrukh or the TT champ.

Architects in house, let’s woot woot for “Annie....” Doordarshan might have showed it only once, but this is still a major part of architecture student life. ❤️❤️❤️

I think the broadcasting minister or the head of the DD national was sacked for allowing this movie to air on TV. It happened during the Rajiv Gandhi's government.

How sweet of you to have found this hidden gem which I remember of having watched on DD as a child! Friday nights used to be English movies. The unusual title of the film has been been etched in my memory since then. Thanks, Anupama! Loved your other selections on this feature. Cheers!

Saw this only because on one FC review session, (while discussing Kaalakandi I think?) Anupama mentions this as an example of Indian Stoner Comedy to the younger lot.
Loved this to bits --- and that took me to the maze of older smart Hindi films of the 80s (that are not of the Benegal Nihalani variety).
Especially Om-Dar-B-Dar. What an experience that was. Have not yet been completely over the experience.
Listen carefully to these asides especially during the FC reviews, and there is a treasure trove of information to be discovered there.

1dgalstyles Harry Hmm. Let's see how to answer this.
Gangs of Wasseypur has adultery, and unremitting violence.
Sin city (and game of thrones) has cannibalism.
Perhaps one of the greatest Indian english novels has incest as a theme.
I am a straight man. I should be disgusted by Brokeback? No?
Heck, even family films like Karz and Bobby and Ek Duuje ke Liye has hints to what will be physical relationship between minors, or a minor and an adilt (main solah baras ki etc etc.).
Art is art yaar. Let's not put our judgments on what the world should like, and what the world should be like. Let us be contained in what we like and don't like. And move on.

So true. It leaves a lasting impression on your mind. Thanks to CZcams was able to see it again. Saw this movie on TV in the Mess Hall during dinner while at med school in the 90’s (they did have a rerun). So relatable viz a viz the grind during the hostel & college days. Uncanny but true, I was enthralled by this movie & Arundhati Roy, that I ended up marrying my lovely wife who in those days very much looked like her doppelgänger.
