- This is a National Award-winning film directed by Pradip Krishen, written by Arundhati Roy and produced by - believe it or not - Doordarshan in 1989. This is a story about the rawness and vulnerability of youth and Pradip narrates it with warmth and immense affection.
Did I mention that it also stars Shah Rukh Khan? This was his first scene ever in a film.

I am from the same architecture school this movie was shot in. The same school Arundhati and Pradip Krishnan are from. Even after 4 decades of making this film, the flavor of the school hasn't changed and that's why it's a Bible for every student in the architecture school. My hostel room was the same one that Annie lives in. It brings back wonderful memories. Thank you Anupama for bringing it out to your non-architectural audience.
Wow
Is this movie based on reality or is it a fiction?
Abcd Efg The movie is based on fiction. But each character existed in reality. Whether it was the gay Shahrukh or the TT champ.
nostalgic isnt it! i watched this as soon as i read god of small things and wanted to know everything about arundati roy back in 2008 in sydney, 19 year old me. Life after god of small things, arundati roy, and this hasnt been the same for me, and couldnt be any happier.
@theshivagiri Try reading "The Ministry of Utmost Happiness", her latest book. It's about her life in the last 2 decades, after winning the Booker Prize.
From where did you dig this out...This is a social gem.. I always wondered why the gems get lost under the soil and the shits floats on..
Architects in house, let’s woot woot for “Annie....” Doordarshan might have showed it only once, but this is still a major part of architecture student life. ❤️❤️❤️
I think the broadcasting minister or the head of the DD national was sacked for allowing this movie to air on TV. It happened during the Rajiv Gandhi's government.
🙌🏻 I’m going to watch this today
This is a film that most architecture students in India have seen during their college years. Passed on from generation to generation. Very relatable and a rare gem.
How sweet of you to have found this hidden gem which I remember of having watched on DD as a child! Friday nights used to be English movies. The unusual title of the film has been been etched in my memory since then. Thanks, Anupama! Loved your other selections on this feature. Cheers!
I was lucky to 'catch' it when it was shown on doordatshan. It remained in my mind ever since. Recently I shared the CZcams Link with my daughter, who loved it too.
This is what you call as a hidden gem. The film is pretty ahead of it's time.
Saw this only because on one FC review session, (while discussing Kaalakandi I think?) Anupama mentions this as an example of Indian Stoner Comedy to the younger lot.
Loved this to bits --- and that took me to the maze of older smart Hindi films of the 80s (that are not of the Benegal Nihalani variety).
Especially Om-Dar-B-Dar. What an experience that was. Have not yet been completely over the experience.
Listen carefully to these asides especially during the FC reviews, and there is a treasure trove of information to be discovered there.
Jeez but how can you like om dar ba dar? There was incest hinted between the brother and sister
Hi I had never heard of the movie Om-Dar-B-Dar. Thanks a lot for mentioning it. Will check this out.
om dar bardar is nice film I watch that movie
1dgalstyles Harry Hmm. Let's see how to answer this.
Gangs of Wasseypur has adultery, and unremitting violence.
Sin city (and game of thrones) has cannibalism.
Perhaps one of the greatest Indian english novels has incest as a theme.
I am a straight man. I should be disgusted by Brokeback? No?
Heck, even family films like Karz and Bobby and Ek Duuje ke Liye has hints to what will be physical relationship between minors, or a minor and an adilt (main solah baras ki etc etc.).
Art is art yaar. Let's not put our judgments on what the world should like, and what the world should be like. Let us be contained in what we like and don't like. And move on.
PS: the book I talk about, leads us back to this video again :)
saw it on Doordarshan itself....but could not forget it because of Arudhati Roy herself, SRK' guest appearance and student life. Indeed a gem, recommended to many frnds.
Just 3 mins ago I didn't even knew about this film, and now I'm in love with the idea of it.
i just found the remastered version on youtube..hopefully will get to it :)
thank you Anupama ji🌷
This is something good you're starting with this masterpiece, looking forward for more good recommdation. Thank you.
So good to see Anupama talk about this film. Its one of my absolute favorite films. I had come across the film as a book that showcased its screenplay. Then I discovered this gem of a film online . A must watch!
Arundhati Roy ❤️
If this movie had been popular during its time then today we would have got great movies on college life.
That was really informative... Thanks again FC
Had seen this movie when I was a student and I felt this was an excellent movie with some of the best psychedelic track of a bygone era.
I watched it ma'am thank you so much for recommending
Even though I’m not a student of SPA . But I have lived there for on and off 4 years . Dhyani Ji and Nescafé seen it all . I saw this movie 14 years ago and could so very well connect to my college that is NIFT that’s it’s almost as If all is going on right in front of my eyes . Different collage but exact vibes and similar characters , love this movie ever since watching it to night for the 100th time ❤️
Thank you so much Ma'am for this recommendation.
Thaaaaaanks a lot
Great music
A hidden gem ....it's an awesome film ....
I love this one too. For how raw it is.
So true. It leaves a lasting impression on your mind. Thanks to CZcams was able to see it again. Saw this movie on TV in the Mess Hall during dinner while at med school in the 90’s (they did have a rerun). So relatable viz a viz the grind during the hostel & college days. Uncanny but true, I was enthralled by this movie & Arundhati Roy, that I ended up marrying my lovely wife who in those days very much looked like her doppelgänger.
It's one of my favorites.
Arundhati Roy 🌞🔥🌚❤️
Thank You
Hidden gem of Indian cinema.
Thank you Anupama Mam. Can you please make a video on Film Noir?
Its a family heirloom, that we will pass on always....
Such a beautiful movie.
I never realised Shah Rukh Khan had such fantastic skin.
😂😂😂😂
This looks and feels so contemporary. Like it could be a CZcams movie coming from independent creators in 2018.
Thanks for this recommendation. Now where can we get our hands on this?
I have seen half of this movie....it's quite good. Indie.
One of the finest films india has created and then shat on for not giving it much deserved attention
Ahh I miss SPA 😭
This movie subtly talks about so many issues.
Unfortunately we didn’t get more movies from Arundhati Roy’s writing. Instead the B town is making Chetan Bhagat movies.
Cause Bollywood considers Arundhati as an anti-national
but isn't she is
@@RahulKumar-ng2gh no
have you listened to her views, she claimed that India had illegally occupied J&K and North Eastern States, Is it so, You can criticise a government but you cannot criticise a legal-moral nation state
@@RahulKumar-ng2gh bro let her say what she wants I don't care Modi said so good but he did. I mean saying doesn't mean anything doing does. Not don't call me anti-national now I dare about value and money it makes .thanks
My school!!!! SPA New Delhi!
Also! SRK has a part in it... lol
Wait.. What !?! Really...
Not just Shah Rukh Khan but Manoj Bajpai also as per Wikipedia but i still couldn't find him.
Just for 5 seconds
Please review Manto
I knew this movie because srk was also part of it
It was also Manoj Bajpayee's first film !
But nobody knows that even SRK acted in this film !
Srk playing gay person in this film #funfacts
Is this film based on reality or is it a fiction?
