  • Sudani from Nigeria is a film about a strapping football player from Nigeria, who is recruited to play in a local football club in Kerala’s Malappuram district. Debutant director Zakariya Mohammed delicately weaves his magic. The film has been co-written by Muhsin Parari who also co-wrote Virus. It’s been co-produced and shot by Shyju Khalid who also gave us the stunning images of Kumbalangi Nights.

Dinesh Daddala it’s because most Malayalam movies aren’t heard of outside Kerala. They don’t have big money to throw around for marketing the movie unlike its brother sister states like Telegu, Tamil and Kannada. So naturally they are not getting to the theaters in bigger cities or don’t have much theater screens to be played in since they have to compete with other regional movies as well as the Hindi movies that get more preference. This combined with absolutely no marketing whatsoever to promote the movie, folks outside of Kerala wont even know about them unless they get to watch it in prime or Netflix...Kerala also have the lowest population of people unlike the surrounding states, so not a lot of word of mouth to help promote any movies either outside Kerala. Just my thoughts.

Great to see that the golden era of Malayalam movies from the 80s and early 90s didn’t get lost forever and the new generation of actors like Fahadh, Nivin, Soubin, Dulqur etc are bringing it back to the greatness that it deserves. It will be good if Film Companion revisited the old classics like Kireedam, Bharatham and pretty much every Mohanlal movie from that era, most of which were remade disastrously in other languages.

It isn’t too good to be true. All these people still do live in malappuram. This can be testified from the fact that a lot of people hailing from other places doing government jobs in schools end up settling in malappuram falling in love with the sort of compassionate people portrayed in the movie.
