  • Sins of a Solar Empire (& SoaSE Rebellion) is one of the few games that has no story mode to speak of. Sins is also one of the few games that actually HAS a story even though there is no story mode. In this video, we'll go over just what that story is and through that, learn of the campaign we never got.

I think that Sins is one of the more underappreciated games out there. I would have killed for a campaign mode. But, before that, I would have loved for Ironclad to have re-optimized the game. I adore playing Sins, but no matter the rig you run it on, the game will inevitably turn into an unplayable lagfest, right as your empire begins building momentum. The larger the map and more entities, the worse the lag apocalypse and the sooner it arrives.

    • @malhavoc431
      @malhavoc431 Před 2 lety +3

@@Vortex-295 I'm fairly certain I've tried that patch. I always found that the problem wasn't so much the RAM as it was the difference in how CPUs are constructed now as compared to when SINS first came out. The game architecture was never designed to take advantage of multiple COREs on the CPU. Multi-threading just wasn't a thing back then. So it dumps all it's data into a single core on the CPU so the whole thing bottlenecks and gets throttled when the number of entities gets crazy. The biggest issues are the AI and pathing routines. Tweaks to those should help, but really the only true "fix" would be a redesign of the algorithms from the ground up.

i think the trailer intro of this game is so incredibly interesting and rich in lore that it just makes you desire a full game, full movie, full tv show. there would be such vast lore. if i could dump 500 million dollars i would make this a movie franchise and it could very well stand with star wars and star trek.
your video is just great. especially the going on and on at the end. makes it seem like you are passionate about this topic and as if 2 friends let a conversation naturally fade out in the end.
your voice and audio quality is incredible maybe you could give me some tips on how you record audio.
i loved the coubbled together footage of sins endless space ect. to underline your story telling visually.

There’s a lot of implications that the eldiritch threat used some kind of telepathy. I always believed that the enemy is what turned the pacifist exiles into the Advent. The backstory of the Advent Rebels seems to back this up, referencing an infection in the Unity that caused them to turn to vengeance.
If anything, I almost want to say the threat is something akin to the Unknown Enity from the last three books from “The Expanse” (the entity that destroyed the Protomolocule creators), but I’m also wondering if the writers were fans of SoaSE and were inspired by the unknown enemy.

SoSE was a great game, I played it to death when it came out. Or rather it played me to death. A single game taking four days was just a bit too much in the end.
Regardless, your story explanation was very interesting, and it does give some much needed context. I agree, a campaign mode with this story would've been an excellent addition to the game. I remember playing a metric fuckton of Galactic Civilizations back in the day, all three games. Thats a 4X game that did story campaigns pretty darn well while also providing an excellent sandbox mode. Also Endless Space 2 from recent memory, where you can stumble upon quest chains where you can influence the outcome based on your decisions and even receive powerful buffs for your empire. I didn't care much for the shoehorned Academy missions, which can make or break games regardless of your strategic prowess, but I digress.
It's a shame there are so few entries in the strategy genre in recent years, I especially miss RTS games a lot. I hope they'll make a comeback someday.

A good story well told. Much appreciated. Regarding a possible SOASE 2... I guess I would envision something like Warcraft III. Maybe some in-fighting between the existing factions at the start of the campaign, with the Unknown Threat being like the Burning Legion that they all set aside their differences to defeat. Whether they would be playable or not I have no idea. I have a hard time believing they'd add different races other than the Unknown Threat, because it seems like it would be hard enough just to add a fourth without redundancy or balance breaking issues.
Postnote: Love the game, but it takes me like a week to finish one skirmish, and I play alone. Capturing footage for all this must've been a grind. Sympathies.

I must say, only having lightly played this game mostly for the Halo mod since I love the Halo ships and hate how little attention they get I was surprised out fun this game was. When I first played I was a little overwhelmed and didn't play for a while. Now that I have truly played the base game I realize how haven't I played this before? To me this game while being 4X feels a lot like a classic RTS with fleet building and turtling and tech trees. However, my favorite feature of this game that surprisingly no other game has is civilian/non-player yet same faction ships. Seeing actual transports come out of trade hubs and travel between systems, ore barges going between miners, It made the universe feel alive. My favorite however was the friendly pirates' feature, where controlled systems with enough culture could raise their own ships to defend and attack.
Now I hear about this interesting lore where an ancient powerful race is feeling from a completely unknown yet terrifying mystery force, how can I not be interested! I really hope in the sequel they announced this story is finally explored and expanded.

the intro does imply the vasari activated some kind of device that started all of this, what this event they triggered could be could be anything. but what ever it is, does appear to be something like vacuum decay? this is a bubble that will continue to expand indefinitely at the speed of light, anything within its influence defies the nature of physics, chemistry its self could either cease to function all together, but the for the sake of making a interesting story and a potential new threat. perhapes the vacuum decay alters physics and chemistry anything and anyone inside becomes twisted and corrupted, and those inside become a whole race of its own, maybe biological terrors or some such that inhabits within so there are new adversarys to deal with when the main factions figure out a way to go inside of this growing bubble to try put a stop to it. and at the rate of this expansion would take about 100'000 years to envelop the entire galaxy.

I want the campaign to start more or less where the story left off. The narrator of the cutscenes says he has a son. I want the main character of the TEC to be that son, who would be in his 30s. He would just have finished his training and education and be admitted into the TEC as a captain of a capital ship. The first few missions would be about him retaking some Trade Order backwater planets and working up the prestige and rank to become an Admiral. Then the original narrator, his father, would be reintroduced and possibly killed in the war with the new enemy as their scouting missions turn into full blown invasions. From there, I would like it to be like Starcraft where you would play as the Advent and then as Vasari Allied with the TEC to take down the threat. Introducing sympathic new characters into the story. The Advent especially come off as being the petty villains of the story so it would be nice to see them actually doing some heroic deeds.

i get it, some games need stories, some don't need stories. some people really don't care about the story. but i care. the sins universe is an epic setting for an epic story. the end of that story could have been finding out the info on the vasari's ancient enemy. and that enemy could have been epic.
but whatever, it's an old game and nothing more will be done to it or that universe. it's done now
-edit- so about 2 minutes after i typed that, i found out sins 2 has a release trailer. well gosh darn, i'm wrong.

Great Video about the lore, which is sadly missing from this game...i have well over 2000hrs into this game and i agree a campaign would of been great, but this game like TES(bethesda) has an amazing mod community, with top quality mods (Star Trek Armada 3) (Star Wars Interregnum) are my personal favorites, but there is plenty more, halo mods, EvE online mods, Stargate mods etc. The mod community is what made this game last this long.

To the people who go on about how "campaign is nothing but a long tutorial" - please stop. Gas is too expensive to gaslight in the current economy.
A campaign would have made Sins a far more popular and played game. Just like with SC2 / SC BW / AOE - a lot more people are likely to try the game even if they never intend to play multiplayer - then slowly try the multiplayer out and enjoy it. A lot more people would go back to the game to re-play the campaign, and stick around - again in multiplayer - after completing it for the 7th time. Campaign makes games a lot more memorable, replayable, and easier to introduce to new players. It's a royal shame this was not included in Sins, simply due to how awesome the game was in the first place, how much it could have added to the gameplay, and how few people played it compared to the potential the game had.

And now even Sins 2 do not have a Campaign mode! God damn it, these stories are good, better than your usual CoD schlock etc, why can't we have it? It would be a damn good experience and hook some people who would otherwise give Sins a pass...

As soon as you dial up the difficulty, the AI just rejects any diplomatic outreach for alliance and all gang up on you despite having a full Diplomacy/Culture tree:( I been playing this game for like ten years and just got into massive games against super hard AI opponents. I would like to report back from outer space that i'd like to please speak to the manager about this.

The thing chasing away the Varsari refugee fleet is a "Great Old one". One look at a great old one is enough to cause terror and armies are useless against it. 10:03 To a Great old one, we are like the bacteria we wipe off our ass. Sure they are there, but there are more, and in the grand scheme of things, your former bacteria will be replaced and you have to go on about your day.
Birdbox is a great example of this, and when you think about it, it is true. We are puny, very short lives compared to the Universe.
