Rebellion still holds up today. Still updated, still has mods, they realised an HD graphics pack. Love this game. I also think I have yet to complete a game since I usually pick the multi-hundred system maps.

And I'm still annoyed about the stunt they pulled on the buyers of the original retail box version after 1.05...
We need a Sins 2. By far the best space rts on grand scale for me.
Stellaris/Endless feel bloated and isn't as much fun to just sit down for a few hours to do a quick solar system domination.

I like stellaris economy and open ended game but the battle system is so mundane...

Not sure about Stellaris, but in ES2 you surely can do quick victories (with fast game speed). Especially with Crawers, Vodyani and Sophons. Hissho are kinda agressive too, but expansion which added them, fucked up whole of balance and sane people usually disable it.

The only thing I really find i disagree with is about the soundtrack. I absolutely love the soundtrack of SINS and quite often find myself turning off the soundtrack of other games (such as Civ V) and play the SINS soundtrack off of Spotify in the background.

I disagree on one thing, soundtrack is freaking amazing in this game. Most of people who I know who played this, agree too. Something wrong with music taste must be on your end, lol. Other than that, good review.

Yea the soundtrack is incredible. By far one of my favourites, I agree on the voice acting it is too repetitive. I would probably prefer it disabled if the option is there.
Some of the soundtrack is great, some is meh. I kinda wish though there was more variation in the way the music changes because I get kinda tired of the same old pirate music over and over again at each pirate raid.
The only problem is Advent and Vasari soundtracks are pale in comparison to glorious TEC soundtracks though.
If they wanna make a Sins 2, the only thing I ask is to have 64 bits support and good performances during end games. That's all
I agree 100%! 32 bit kinda killed Sins in 5 galaxy 15 hour hyper matches :P
@@Zade_95 Yeah... In 10 way matches I tended to set the Fleet Size to Small just to ease the burden on the poor engine. It also keeps things a bit more tactical, since defensive structures serve a greater purpose with smaller fleets to contend against.
@XoRandomGuyoX To be fair, defensive structures are pretty op in sufficient quantity regardless of maximum fleet size.
Sins of a Solar Empire has got to be the sickest title I have ever heard of for something.

I just want to put in a good word for the soundtrack. The opening theme is bloody fantastic because it jumps from each of the different race's themes, with the choral elements for the Advent, the drums for the TEC and the strings for the Vasarri. Each race's themes are unique to them as well. I was very surprised by your analysis of the soundtrack as one of the highlights of playing the game was listening to the soundtrack, but maybe that's just me.

Gotta say I disagree on the soundtrack aspect, the soundtracks from sins are absolutely stellar in my opinion. Otherwise it's good to see content on this game, one of my all time favorite games, very underrated in my opinion.

I loved this game back in 2013. A perfect Sins 2 would have:
1. progressive campaign missions with admirals and commanders
2. solar systems with moving planets and orbital stations/moons
3. planetary invasions with army carrier ships
One can dream lol.... that would be awesome. Maybe one day!

I remembered soloing two stacks of enemy fleets with my maxed out Kultorask titan, whenever my health goes to half, the first (or was it second?) abilities regenerates the titan like hell. the enemy player disconnected after that engagement

I can't remember, may have been around that time. Yeah I mean it's not bad by any means, just not hugely memorable or anything. I found just turning off and chatting with my teammates to be better for me, but that's just me!

While I'm always down for more Sins, I think the amount in the game is good, but it does require you to make a bit of your own fun sometimes :p
I like the way your title card is clearly pronouncing itself as a "Retrospective Analysis" than your atypical "VIdeo game review". I won't mention any names, but there are YT content creators that often release review vids with an astounding amount of audience while completely missing the point why it is called a 'review' in the first place. They meander from topic, and sometimes talk more about the elements of its gameplay (which to be clear, there is completely nothing wrong abt it!) than trying to convey their opinions, and often tend to end up unintentionally misleading their audiences. Reviews are an expression of your opinions.
In this video, while you talk about an ample amount about the gameplay itself, its also nice to hear you sharing your thoughts on small details, without over-saturating the point -- being a "Retrospective Analysis".
Long story short, thanks for not wasting my time. I came here expecting a showcase of the gameplay mechanics of the game, and it did not dissapoint me. I appreciate that.

Thanks for typing all this out - it really means a lot! I'm glad you liked what I'm doing and that you found it interesting! I actually split these videos off into two separate styles now as I felt I couldn't give enough time to all the mechanics and details in a sub 20 minute video. So those shorter ones have now become 'Should you game in 2019?" and I've made a longer retrospective series that are all aiming to be 25-45 minutes long. I released my first one recently on Metro 2033 - if you've got time I'd love to hear what your thoughts about it!

Good retrospective. Purchased this when it was originally in beta, the games evolved over time. The only thing I would have loved to have seen is a good single player campaign - although not needed - it would have completed the picture.

They’ve been releasing dlc quite consistently, and the descriptions make me wonder if that “enemy” the Vasari refer to in lore will be released in one of the packs, or even in a new game in the series.
Yeah it's interesting how that's happening. I'd love to see a Sins2 with that 'enemy' and some sort of uneasy alliance between branches of the existing factions!
The "Maelstrom" mod elevate this game to new levels, I desperately need SIns2 that being said like many others.

Really the biggest surprise for me with this game was when they released Outlaw Sectors and a new balancing patch in 2016 (three years after their last DLC).
I was certain no patch would drop but it's great to see developers taking care of their game that many years after release. (RIP Truce amongst Rogues though).
And recently they released another smaller DLC + the ability to disable super weapons and disable AI surrender and I think that's pretty neat.
Really the only downside is the technical side. It seems that in longer matches, there's a slim possibility for the game to crash. Although I can't fix that happening, luckily it is easily possible to change the autosave duration to just one minute. So whenever it crashes while playing with friends, not much will be lost at all.
Yeah i know right, it's super awesome! Kinda weird too, as you'd think these DLCs wouldn't take much development time. I like to think they're drumming up hype for a sequel!
Same, this is one of those RTS games I easily come back to. Try American Conquest as well or the cossacks series.
While the ship classes of each faction are the same especially capital ships and support cruisers are very unique with very different roles. For example while all factions have a carrier class capital ship spawning fighters the Advent one has an area of effect anti strike craft ability and a weapon buff ability for the fleet while the vasari carrier has an area of effect repair ability and can make functional copies of ships later in the game. The Tec carrier can spawn missile platforms and cripple the economy on an enemy planet both of which are good especially early on and later it can significantly improve production on friendly planets.

Quick games are about 6-7 hours, but I had a game last for a whole week of 5-7 hour sessions. It was me and 3 friends against like 2 teams of 3 AI. I was TEC Loyalists with a buddy, we locked down our Stars with 2 Starbases each, and were in the second wave of invasions, setting up forward Starbases in enemy territory with Shipyards and repair ships. We barely won, with two of us dying to the last AI, and it was the two Turtles left for us.
Some games just get ridiculous in their length lul. Part of the reason I love it though! That sounds awesome! If you are into that kinda game, playing Star Trek Armada 3 (mod for Sins) with a few friends vsing one HARD Borg ai is fun!
@@Zade_95 we love it tho. Started a game like 3 hours before a friend had to work, didn't stop till his boss called asking if he was dead
After seeing this I have realized that you really need to check out Sword of the Stars. basically a bit larger scale than SOE, fleet engagments have fewer ships, but each ship class is completely customized by the player down to individual gun batteries, each race plays completely different from Humans with Nodelines that allow for super fast FTL but only along certain routes while other races have something closer to Star Trek warp to even a race that travels every sublight but can setup teleportation gates and move entire fleets around their territory instantly.
Damn this game exploded with the humble bundle and current deal on steam with the new surprise DLC. Makes me happy to see a game I bought day 1 back in 2012 still able to draw people in and still getting support from Stardock.
Now make a sequel already.

This is my favorite game of all time. Just ahead of AoE 2, roller coaster tycoon 2, starcraft, and metal fatigue.
SoaSE, RTW, M2TW, CK2, and RCT2 are probably the games I've put the most amount of time in.

the micro aspect of this game is phenomenal. and the galactic force massing which can also be micro'ed (skill base of the player) it plays exceptionally well. SoaSE is that one game you wished had the funding to be made even bigger.

I was sifting and sifting and sifting through STEAM for any Game less than 10 bucks. I wanted a Space Colony or Strategy Game, or something like Nobunaga's Ambition, or a City Sim building Game. It was either this game or Children of the Nile. I had to go with this since it was 70% off, going for 6 bucks.
Watched some reviews and I was SOLD. I love playing Starfleet Command: Gold Edition, but I was getting tired of it.
I wanted something with a little more substance, not just combat.
Still haven't played the game since it's downloading, but I am SUPER excited.

This game's only real problem is its technical basis: An engine optimized for Windows XP 32-bit that cannot profit from more than 3 GB RAM and multi-core CPUs. If it was 64-bit, it could easily handle giant maps and battles on modern systems.

Good game (still playing competitive PvP today), would have been a great game if only it wasn't let down by constant crashes/minidumps due too poor design. So frustrating when 7/10 online PvP games end with someone crashing & ultimately game over when the other team is left -1 player down.
Yeah definitely with older versions it was more prevalent, I don't find it as much of an issue now. That's would be super frustrating though!!

Have to disagree about the sound. I always got the impression that the sound was supposed to be the way it was because you were hearing it over some sort of communications system. Like an added static effect.

I like the soundtrack, It does get repetitive, but the overall quality of the music is good. I usually throw on some star wars music (5,4,6,1, 3.5, 3,2,7) if I need a change.

The only problem I have with sins is the late game or on large maps where the game just slows to a crawl because it dosent use all or my rigs resources
Yeah, Sins loves strong cpu cores but only uses one. Lol

I'd definitely hop on the hype train of a Sins of a Solar Empire 2, but I feel there isn't much they could add. Maybe a a big diplomacy overhaul could be nice, fine tune starfighters and bombers to make them do dogfights and what not like Empire at War. Definitely some things can be done, and using a more powerful engine could be a treat but I feel there isn't much left to do with this game.
Yeah I'd be interested to see what could be done to improve it. Honestly at this point just better graphics, new units, and refined mechanics would probably be enough! and better performance
I was always disappointed there wasn't any campaign or story for it, it seemed so promising. Loved the game though including the ost.
i'm sad there's no SoSE 2 because the game is actually AWESOME! if you've ever taken the time to create a map you can literally make a map with 2000+ suns that can have an infinite number of planets and the game engine actually runs this, although it stresses the shit out of your CPU and RAM. I made a map with 200 suns and made the travel time between planets to be as long as 20 minutes and it was interesting to play it, actually. Still have my SoSE installed and i ocasionally play it and im not planning on removing it at all. It's a lovely game and a very unique RTS. The sound is good and quite feets the game actually.
The idea of the enthusiasm behid the voices of the Advent is that they're this phanatical psychic/mental-powered race. Their planetary bombardment ships actually sends psychic waves to the planet you want them to bombard creating chaos and mental breakdown of the planet's population causing it to kill itself. Unlike the other 2 races which simply anihilate the entire surface of the planet with nuclear bombs and giant lazer beams.
HAhahaha yeah we had this hilarious time when my friend made a map and made it way to big by accident, and the planet jumps took ages. I don't think Sins uses multiple CPU cores well (or at all) which it why it slows down even on newer systems.
That makes sense for the voices, they still sound funny though :P

Sins Faction Ships Fact: Vasari ships focus more on Armour and Health, Advent Focuses more on Shielding and Anti-Matter(The Advent ships really has the greatest capital ship skills), While the TEC focuses more on Balance between the three(Health, Armour, Anti-Matter)
