  • Abandoned Kroger - Haltom City, TX. It was upon visiting this location that we found out it recently closed in March 2020. As to why this closed, it may be because of another location nearby and there was no desire to resign a lease for this building.

I remember going to this exact Kroger as a kid. The last time I went to that location was back in January. My wife works at the Kroger in West Ft Worth. The day they announced the closing of the store it pissed a lot of residents that live near it off bc there is not many grocery stores left in that area except for Aldi and that Walmart neighborhood market about a couple miles away.

A couple of notes about this store: It closed fairly recently in March 2020 due to a combination of needing extensive repairs (which the landlord wouldn't cover) and being only marginally profitable for a period of many years. The surrounding area isn't particularly great, and there are a couple of other locations within about a 10 minute drive, which gave Kroger a reason to simply close this store rather than relocate. In DFW, Kroger has the second highest grocery market share behind Walmart (approximately a 25-30% share, which has been holding steady for years). Tom Thumb and Albertsons are not far behind, but their market share has been declining for several years now, and quite a few locations for each chain have closed. On the other hand, Kroger has retained most of their locations aside from closing 4-5 in recent years which were either antiquated or had been experiencing low traffic for some time. Aside from this store, other recent closures include the following:
6080 S. Hulen St, Fort Worth - Closed due to being in an aging area and experiencing chronically low traffic for years. A few years prior to closing, it received a remodel with a scaled down version of the Bountiful/2012 decor, but without the basket/raised stainless steel department signage. The department names were simply painted on with grey paint, which looked incredibly cheap. The shopping center's boxed-in location with railroad tracks to the south didn't help matters, as it prohibited easy access from a major north-south thoroughfare. Lastly, a nearby location at Altamesa and McCart made this store somewhat redundant.
4836 W. Park Blvd, Plano - Originally built as a Tom Thumb in the late 80's-early 90's, this store was divested to Minyard Sun Fresh as part of the Albertsons-Safeway merger in 2015. Then, as Minyard began to falter with their Sun Fresh operations over the next couple of years, Kroger purchased this store from them as a way to increase their market share in the area. Interestingly, this would be Kroger's second operation at the Park/Preston intersection, as they previously operated a store at the northeast corner (now home to Trader Joe's, Old Navy, and other retailers) which was closed in the late 2000's due to a failing roof structure. Kroger had been attempting to reenter this intersection for some time. However, this second store was ultimately short lived, as mediocre performance along with expensive maintenance and repairs (which yet again, the landlord refused to pay for) convinced Kroger to close this store after less than a year in operation (and an extensive interior remodel prior to opening).
2240 Justin Rd, Highland Village - Originally built as a higher-end Minyard in the 90's, this store was taken over by Kroger in 2005, but just never really took off in the area. A good portion of the traffic into Highland Village/Flower Mound enters the area further south, and Kroger has two stores further south which likely pick up much of this evening commuter traffic. In addition, a newer Marketplace store to the west further siphoned customers from this location.
As a side note, up until recently, most Texas stores have used this block signage. However, over the past couple of years, store remodels have generally included replacing the block lettering with their curved logo, typically on the building and sometimes at the streetside signage as well.

Just wait till the aggressive Texas based HEB comes. I don't see Most Krogers being able to compete against HEB,Tom Thumb, Aldis, Winco, El Rancho, Oriental Marts,Trader Joes,Neigherbood Wal mart. We might be seeing more closes next year.

    • @golferguyjake28
      @golferguyjake28 Před 3 lety

Rob Roux, I definitely agree with you in that H‑E‑B would pose a significant threat, but I actually feel that Tom Thumb/Albertsons could be the major victim of this. In DFW, most of Kroger’s shopper base is actively brand-loyal, whether that is due to the generally well-run stores, fair pricing, or good promotions. If the Houston market is any indicator, Kroger has been able to compete with H‑E‑B fairly well, even beating them on pricing in some cases. On the other hand, most seemingly loyal Tom Thumb shoppers simply shop there due to past loyalty from the pre-Safeway days, while also recognizing the decreased in-store experience and high pricing common there today. In addition, many of Tom Thumb’s stores are in long established neighborhoods with little convenient competition (particularly in places like the Park Cities and Preston Hollow). In short, many people choose Tom Thumb due to a lack of convenient choice. The thing is, H‑E‑B has shown a willingness to put together complex real estate deals and test unconventional store formats (such as multi-level stores) to enter these established neighborhoods. This has been a big part of what has led to Randalls’ downfall in Houston, as H‑E‑B is easily able to step in and substitute in the “local Texas grocer” role that neither Tom Thumb or Randalls fits the bill of anymore. Albertsons is in a similar threatened position as Tom Thumb, but mostly around Fort Worth (and with even less brand loyalty and local ties to fight back with). Lastly, the Tom Thumb/Albertsons combined media advertising common in DFW sounds clunky at best and hasn’t done much to help either brand’s image by further taking away both of their local identities.

I used to go to this Kroger all the time (I live in Haltom City). The reason why it closed is because the foundation of the structure was deteriorating and the property owners didn't want to pay enough to repair it, so they chose to just abandon it.

This was an old Kroger built back in the heyday of K-Mart. The store was low performing, but the primary reason for closing was increase in rent and landlord refused to make necessary structural repairs. There was a major issue with the sewer. The corner building was a EXXON station. Kroger wanted that property owner to let Kroger install their branded gas station. Owner refused so Kroger built a station in the lot just behind the corner store (which is only a convenience store) but was required to tear it down and remove the tanks aft the store closed. The old K-Mart anchor closed back in the early 2000s. Since your video was posted, the K-Mart anchor was finally leased (2021) by a company called 'Ollie's' after sitting and rotting all those years. Haltom City is a food desert with a population of 46,073 as of the April 2020 Census. Haltom City residents like to delude themselves that an H-E-B grocery store will come here. It never will, we don't meet the demographics. Haltom City is a nice place to live, but like any older small town could use a lot of refreshing.

The Kroger on my side of town closed as well(Last September) and it was one with a fuel center. Now we drive to the one on the other side of the town for groceries. It still baffles me today as to why it closed in the first place considering that it was on a fairly busy side of town(across from the mall), clean, and always had plenty of customers.

It would appear the KMart and Kroger were built together in the 70's. The atrium-style entrance and KROGER sign would be appropriate to that period, when grocery stores started getting a bit bigger. It looks as if the area matured, stuff started moving out and when the KMart closed, it probably reduced traffic for Kroger, so Cincinnati decided to pull the plug.

It closed due to declining sales. At that point, Walmart and another Kroger not far away drew business away.

It took me a minute to figure out where that store was. It was on 377 Denton highway, south of 820. We live about 10 minutes from there

    Wallie,
Did you see the old Trader Horn store off McKnight Road was demolished along with the old Kroger building. I know they wanted to build a Walmart a few years back.

There is an area in Mississippi with 6 Krogers within 10 miles. A friend of mine worked at 2 of them.

Kroger's old building design. I've seen a Kroger with that same old building design that's still open too over in Seabrook, Texas.

It's harder to find Kroger's anymore. Tom Thumbs too. Ohio has more Kroger's than the DFW now(we have family in Williamsport Ohio).

That was not the Kroger gas station. It started off an Exxon, and at one time Kroger had a gas station behind that Exxon. They both closed around the same time, the Kroger gas station was torn down, and the Exxon turned into a liquor store.
I actually worked at the Kmart that used to be on the other end of that shopping center, as well as an Eckerd Drugs that was in one of the buildings between Kmart and Kroger

Kroger (in Cincinnati anyway) has been on an all out crusade to build new superstores. I imagine this Kroger in Texas was fully depreciated, and rather than renovate, they built a new store somewhere in the area.
And the federal $$ they got for Covid probly helped with construction. This is all purely speculation, but it makes sense since they're doing it in Cincy.

I searched Haltom City Texas on Google Maps and I came across this interesting-looking empty lot which looks like a mall was once there
32°49'40.9"N 97°13'05.6"W I even went to street view in 2008 and this supposed mall was still not there. That means this mall was closed for several years.
