A Disaster of a Weekend for the Colorado Avalanche Raises Serious Doubts About a Deep Playoff Run

- The Colorado Avalanche cannot get out of their own way, and this weekend was just about as low as they can get.
A huge game on Saturday with seeding on the line vs their first round opponent, the Winnipeg Jets, ended in a 7-0 thumping.
A bounce back game on Sunday would have had everyone feeling better. And for two periods we all did. But hockey games are three periods, and that is when it all fell apart against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Things are not good for the Avs right now, and you can't feel good about having any chance of a deep playoff run if they can't stop things from going this wrong.

Really looking forward to Colorado Winnipeg. Colorado will wake up and we should have a good series. I calling 7 games. Winnipeg always impresses me. All we are told is the players hate Winnipeg and the team has zero chance to make the playoffs yet year after year they sign all their free agents and they seem to make the playoffs most years. I have a bad feeling that underestimating the jets could be a biggest mistake.

Someone mentioned that it is so frustrating to have such good players but struggling so badly. I'm sure that is how the Oilers/Oilers fans felt earlier in the season and they managed to turn their game around. I just don't know if it is too late for the Avalanche at this point.

Coming off of the high of the MacKinnon hat trick, this was such a disappointing weekend. I obviously am still hoping for the best in the playoffs, but this just seems like a year where they've been too inconsistent not only from one game to the next, but from one period to the next.
Just hope they can wipe the slate clean in the post season. Team defense needs to be stepped up dramatically for the goalie situation to even be passable.

I think there is a high probability Georgiev tanks the season for the Avs. But honestly I put this in CMac he should have found a better backup goalie since they clearly did not believe in anunen at trade deadline time

It was clear that they were searching for a goalie trade. Remember Annunen was "sick" that day? Whatever they were thinking of didn't work out.
Basic fundamental hockey, when your overall team D plays offensively you leave yourself vulnerable to oddman rushes, and that's what happens, it's great when you score 6 goals but not when you give up these rushes where everyone's caught deep, leaves your goalie out to dry.

It happened all the time even 2 years ago too, thats where Kuemper was fantastic, he would bail out the odd man rushes our aggressive style gives up. That's why out of all the goalies we've had with this same core he's the one that won the cup. Perfect goalie for this system
well, in my mind we are the underdogs. So upsetting the Jets would be incredible

I don't think it's really fair to crap on Justus for that game. Sure he didn't have a great game but it's a bit unrealistic to expect him to be flawless after sitting around for an hour and then getting thrown into 0-4 hole and no one playing in front of him.

It ain't over until it's over. I'm not confident that the Avs are going to make it to round 2 in the playoffs, but that doesn't matter they CAN DO IT ANYWAY!
Last season, the Panthers barely even made the playoffs and were down 3-0 in the series vs Boston and look what happened. Even if the Avs are down 3-0 in round 1 I'll still believe they COULD turn it around and go far. Unless they are officially out of the contest, they can still win the Cup!

"You can not outscore your problems during the playoffs and expect to win games" Is that not exactly what they did on the Cup run? Everyone said we couldn't win with the goalie tandem we had and it wasn't a concern. Darcy Kemper was no where near first in the league in games won when that happened.

At that time you have shrewed and smart players in team, had Kadri not eliminated Binnigton they would humilated in second round
That team was well rounded from top to bottom and solid in all 3 aspects of the game. The only similarities between that team and this team is the offense. They don't need top of the line goaltending, they just need competent goaltending. They don't need top of the line defense (which with this team they should have damn near close to it) they just need competent defense. They got both of those in 2022. They aren't getting either of them with this team. Kuemper had a GAA of 2.54 and a .921 save % during the regular season with a 2.57 GAA during the playoffs. Georgiev is at a 3.02 with a .897 save %. Give me Kuemper's stats over a win total at this point. Win are impressive, but incredibly he could have even more with Kuemper's stat line from that season

Shaky goaltending and consistent/significant lapses in defensive positioning and marking… been that way all season. If we get hot game one a deep run could still happen…

Maybe they needed this kick in the ass to wake up the sleeping giant. At this point, wouldn’t surprise me if they got embarrassed or if they made a deep run. A few weeks later we host them in a playoff game, and blast them out of the water 38-3.
You remember what happened after that. The point: it was smart of Shanny not to tip his hand on plays and formations during the regular season game.
Anyway, I was all set to point that out after the Jets debacle, and then the latter part of the VGK game kinda re-colored the thinking a lil bit.
Still, and always, there's no better coach than Bednar to 'get it back'.

Winning with Kemps has made them believe that they can win with the money outside the net. Last year they weren't quite as prolific scoring, but they were better in net which made up for it. This year Georgie is down and the skaters aren't good enough to make up for it.
The Jets have been blessed with Hellebuyck. Vezina winning goalies can cover a lot of a teams warts, and if the team plays 'team D' in front of him, this is what happens.
Just finished the Vegas game, watched vs Jets last night. I’ve watched every single game this season and the goaltending and D has been a struggle. Cool with many clutch comeback wins, the Penguins one was awesome, but I’m tired of all these first period goals they let in and trailing so often. Manson has been fucking awesome all season and don’t forget the assist for the Rantanen goal. What I don’t understand however, why not glove down the with less than 30 seconds left in the game. To continue on with the Vegas game… Why get comfortable and let up in the third? I had to ask myself what the first line had done in the period over half way through, they felt flat. You can’t take the foot of the gas in a game like this.
I’m hoping for an awesome playoffs this year and hopefully they’ll show up.

Last year, we were so hurt all year and it finally caught up with us in the first round. Now I feel like our goal-tending (and other things) will catch up with us in the first round. Do you really see this team going deep? 😢

Winnipeg wanted home ice more. The White out Parties have been planned for days. It’s the loudest building in the league when we all in White!! Add Jets have the Vezina winner behind the pipes, who has a very capable backup. Nino should be back so no injuries. The addition of Monahan, Vilardi, and Tofolli were huge this year. It’s gonna be a good series!

If faceoffs are the deciding stat I'd like to ask Shaggy if he'd bring Ry Jo back? I didn't think so. You guys are predicting a lot of doom and gloom predicated on two losses. Albeit two losses that are at a critical time but I think you need to take a step back and remember how this team was playing two weeks ago.

Take another step back and look at the month of February. It's been a rollercoaster season.
The playoffs are a different story. Everything is reset. All teams go through bad periods. It ain’t over till it’s over.
The Coyotes would gladly take the season that the Avalanche has had thus far. But it is also good to see that the fans are upset because they care. At least the Avalanche are not going anywhere. Same can’t be said for the Coyotes. It really looks like they are going to Salt Lake City and will play there next season. I wonder if they even keep their name and image or if they will become the Utah Yetis like it is rumored?
You have a great team and a great organization. You are part of the community. You have three Stanley Cup Championships. I say this as a Panthers fan. I hope that the Panthers can win at least one in my lifetime. At least the Tampa Bay Lightning has brought the Cup to Florida three times themselves.

@@armandoperez7967 there are a lot of teams that would love to have the season that the Avalanche have had. Only 16 teams make the playoffs and the Avalanche make it pretty easily. The Avs fans are just spoiled by how dominant the 21/22 team was, so it's hard to watch them being not so good.
Makar, MacKinnon, and Toews does not make a team! You need depth players that can score and play a 200 ft game. Look at Dallas as the appropriate model. Can roll 4 lines and have 3 solid pairs on D. Goalie tandem that are reliable and do not leak out easy goals regularly.

To me it’s been the same problem all year they were up 3-0 and he allows goal after goal after goal,,, as much as the Avs played badly but if he keeps allowing 4 goals or more then you can’t win! He’s on the hot seat I do believe if he doesn’t perform in the playoffs, he’s gone! The Avs won’t throw away another year on him , he will be traded before the draft

@@shaggyvondoomHathaway, Bunting, Bertuzzi, Marchand, Tkachuk, Gallegher, etc… know how to and can change the temperature of the game- dragging their teammates into a fight. I don’t see that with this Avs team. With the exception of Trenin & Walker, maybe McFarland got too cute with too many adds at the deadline, and Mittlestadt’s fit is still an issue.

Seems like there are a number of defences issues including miss comms with Georgie about who’s getting the puck etc and I wonder if that affects the offence? They don’t want to commit because of trust?

MacFarland could have signed Allen or Quick, nothing done! He is a big part in this failure! Yesterday was on Manson and Manson alone!! Annunen was bad, too! I have never seen or heard how people crucify Georgiev and what about Makar and Manson in Vegas! If you are cheap, you do not get an A+ goalie! They won 2022 with a mediocre goalie because the defense was on the ice!!!!!

Hockey is a team sport so blaming one individual or a few for a lost isn’t correct. The right answer to blaming a lost is quite simple and it’s the Awesome Sauce that the players eat before the game. That Awesome Sauce takes full credit. April has seen the AVS go 2-4-1 and if they didn’t play the Wild twice in April the AVS could easily be victory free. Ahahahaha
I saw this coming. “Cheap Avalanche” finally ran aground. Passing on more expensive players like Monahan or Toffoli or Hanifin etc gets punished. Where was the 2c Mittelstadt in the last two games? If so many want to get rid of Georgiev, well then also Annunen, as we saw Saturday. But good goalies cost $$$$$ and the Avs do not want to pay. And since today Manson MUST be on the shortlist to be traded. That was horrific! Anything than a first round exit would be a HUGE surprise. This regular season ends worse than the last one and the reason for this is in my opinion a bad GM! Joe, can MacFarland and take the job back. A guy who came from the CBJ cannot do the job! Look at his track record - numbers speak loudly and we saw at against Winnipeg. We could have gotten better than Mittelstadt and Trenin and Duhaime. There must be a different direction after this failed season. I feel sorry for Nathan. You did an awesome job, but with d men like Manson and Girard, it cannot work.
