How was this Wood Box Made with only a Drill?

- Challenge: Make a wood box with a drill and no other tools! I took an old power drill and modified it to let me make this insanely gorgeous wood box that even the most eagle-eyed woodworker would be none the wiser. In order to make the box, I had to make a table saw. I attached a saw blade to my drill and build a shop-made table saw around it. Making a table saw from a drill was probably harder and more time intensive than making the actual wood box! Once the saw was built, I used two wood species, chechen and maple, for the wood box project. Chechen wood is very dense so I knew I’d put this homemade table saw to the test. I used maple for the interior and the box lid. The was finished with Osmo hard wax finish.
Someone may ask about how I got the wood to begin with and if tools were required to get it before starting the project. I already had the wood boards. However, a quick search online will reveal a ton of places that sell beautiful, figured wood already milled to a variety of thicknesses. Here are a few examples. I am not affiliated to these companies:

Love this. I especially appreciate the balance of safety and the disregard for, without getting bogged down in discussing it. Really demonstrates the difference between safe for everyone and safe enough for the guy who knows what he's doing. The box turned out nice, too. I might've tried to add a contrasting strip, border, or accent of some sort.
I love this comment. I hit the heart button three time!
I used to say, it's not stupid if it works....... Now I'm not so sure.
Impressed by the problem solving at least.
Just a drill... and a screwdriver...and some clamps... and another screwdriver...and allen wrenches... and lots of blue tape. Sweet!
I love that the kid is "girl child" in the text. I know my duaghter is now going to be that.
Also laughed at the Gremlin hands at the end grabbing the box.
Awesome video ! Love your drill-saw , a first for me ...Wow ! You should set it up next to your mini-lathe !
I wish, but I'm sad to say the mini lathe died. It did not survive the mallet video.
Great job. First time your tendency to over complicate came in handy. LOL Box is beautiful.
A second strap on the drill would have eliminated most of the wobble in the blade.
That reminded me of a vintage attachment for a power drill that turned the drill into a scary looking circular saw. My dad had one of these that was vintage in the '70s when I used it to cut some pieces of plywood. As a teenager, I did not appreciate how dangerous that thing was. If you search for "vintage drill circular saw attachment", you'll find many examples. I don't believe I would use a contraption like that now.
Dude.!? You MacGyver'd the piss outta that bad boy. That's true redneck engineering at it's finest. I think Westen Chaplain would be a little jealous but definitely inspired.
OMG... I can hear the internet safety police screaming at you from here...Awesome video just for that reason alone. Oh and I really love that box.
It’s definitely less sketchy after you added a fence 😆
Very cool great video as usual
Amazing work, Billy! Beautiful box!!! 😃
But yeah, lots of people make table saws like this. Sometimes with a dc motor and chuck you get from China, this way you eliminate the wobble.
And well... I may have built some things like that. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
They do. Sort of a different type of project if I'm trying to use legitimate parts. It's on my list of things to build one day.👍
I love this channel, but my roommate has started to notice the correlation between my more dangerous ideas and the number of videos I watch on your channel....
So definitely keep it up!
Haha!
Good idea👍💡
To scetchy looks like an accident waiting to happen
The video starts with a conversation with "The Girl Child" ... 😂
This is gomna be good!
"Can it be ugly?" Lol
And the response of
"Are you going to be weird?"
Lmao😂😂😂😂
Omg that was sketchy and unsafe! Sounds like a good time! Wanna hang out? 😂
great video
Guessing the 'unnecessary cuts' was originally meant to be like you'd do on a miter saw to make a dado type cut, then you realized, wait lets do as gew sketchy cuts, lol
That looks super sketchy and so so so wrong but so right at the same time. Ive seen yhese blade drill attachments before and have never been brave enough but wow that worked. Although how many bits wood did u rewin!! 🤔👍🏴
I feel like I'm doing the same thing, that is I'm making cut after cut tiring to get my miters to come out right. Sometimes I nail it and I think yes I got it. Then the next one is off and I think what happened my last one was perfect. I found another YT creator named young je who made a miter jig that is a bigger version of yours. I'm going to give it a try. I have yet to try a liner in a box. I may give that a try. However I'm not going to put a saw blade on a drill. I'll leave that to the pro's. Stay SAFE and stay awesome.
thanks for fun informative video. and yep high but cool sketchy factor lol
Man, and I thought me mounting my skilsaw with the trigger zip tied upside down in a Homer bucker for use as a table saw was sketchy!!!!
Interesting, Billy. Weird, but interesting.
Bill
Weird and fun. This project was a really good time!
Putting the Hill in HillBilly...
That was fun, but scary.
Sounds like a good time to me!
You could have turned a handle using the drill as well - i.e. turn the drill into a lathe as well as the tablesaw.
Absolutely. I think my brain was fried by the end so I wasn't thinking of it.
I was hoping you would count your fingers before and after this project.
"poof. you're a box."
Come on man, do you even dad?
Shooting board works wonders
You really did have a depth adjustment with the table hinged at one end or so it appeared. Granted the table would not be level but you are throwing caution to the wind on this build.
I didn't need any more risk with this one!
Wait, sketchy factor of only 60%?
And the Bruce Lee clip immediately following! 😅
Which hard wax oil? Rubio? General Finishes?
Osmo
Congrats on your relocation to India! 🤣
So… if you have a table saw, you can make some jigs that turn a drill into a table saw. Got it.
You can buy everything I used already made and cut. I discuss it in the video description.
Zero clearance...is it an insert?
This is basically how i do many of my projects and have scars to prove it... lol...
I have a question....WHY?
Better up that 20%
I wonder if your insurance agent *shakes his head* and pulled your policy out of his cabinet drawer for further review and/or amendments.
Brilliant video!! So well done. One of your very best. Are you going to be weird== Is the Pope Catholic. Billy wouldn't be Billy without a little weird. ;-]
Weird is fun! haha!
❤ This vid. Girl Child asks for box. Newton Makes The Lost Art of the Covenant. Girl Child accepts offering. I fully expect it to contain chicken nuggets by next week. ❤
Ha!! If it does I'm stealing it back!
What the hell did I just watch...?
Someone having a good time making something basic in an incredibly unusual way!
Why not just use a table saw....?🤔
Are you gonna be weird? Well, duh!
Hell naw. Nope factor: 1000 sweet box though.
Also, entertainment factor of 1000. Nice job!
A drill was not intended to be used as a saw; some youngster will think thats great, possible harm them, thats why l have given the thumbs down, sorry
