I Should Have Made This a Long Time Ago! | Modern Wood Box Set Woodworking Project

- Sometimes, I need a palate cleansing project. That's exactly why I made this modern wood box set. It was a break from the other types of projects I made recently and it let me work on creating a woodworking project that has a modern design.

This set of three wooden boxes is incredibly versatile. They can go in the kitchen to hold spices or dry goods like coffee or nuts. This box set would look great as a center piece on a coffee table. And these wood boxes would be perfect in a bedroom to hold jewelry and other cherished items.
I made my wood boxes from walnut and holly. Walnut is always a beautiful wood species. Holly is the whitest wood you can get. You could also use maple as a cheaper option.
My boxes measure approximately 4" wide x 4" long x 3" tall. Someone will tell me they aren't "cubes" like I said in the video. Yeah, yeah. They are close enough and that's not really what's important about this project. It's the proportions and how everything coordinates. The white holly peeks out along the lid even though there is a thin figured walnut piece on the underside of the box lid. That mimics the white line along the bottom of the wood boxes. The tray has sharp angles so it coordinates with the boxes.
I'm really happy with this one. Now, it's time to fill these boxes with junk!

Really it's a beautiful box ❤️❤️❤️.
Thank you dear 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for checking it out
I received a gift from my children very similar to this and D A D was painted onto the 3 boxes. Can also do M O M. I use on my bedside dresser for keys, watch, money and thumb drives. Great looking project. I think inlay or epoxy for letters would look fantastic.
Those are fabulous, I love the contrast with the holly. so good.
Great project!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who will make a tool I want to use work by making a different base or whatever, rather than get out a different one. 😂
Grain selection is impeccable. Good work, as always!
I love these intricate pieces
Love the holly. Keep doing build videos.
Thanks, I want to use holly much more in the future.
Outstanding work! Looks awesome!
Absolutely amazing...!
Amazing idea and beautiful work!
love the rythm of this vid
That assembly looks super, Billy. Your mind is a collection of great ideas that bubble to the surface just for you to implement them. Take care.
Bill
I have to skim the random comic book trivia off the top to allow those ideas to bubble up. haha
Absolutely beautiful result. I am very jealous of the availability you have in the USA of such nice wood types. The materials you used would cost a fortune in the UK.
I'm with JB. The contrast between the Holly and the Walnut is a genius choice, ad I love the design of this box trio thing.-a-muh-bob! I was pleased with the directions and build guidance that you gave us on this one. The resawing process is a little intimidating for me, but I think that I might attempt a variation of this project.
Thanks for sharing this video with us. You did a great job on this one.
I'm sure that your Mom and Wife are proud!
There were some things on the fly. I had no plan to make that router template or the router base for this video. I realized I needed them and decided to show that process. I'll try to do that more often.
Really was a fun watching this nice project thanks bro
Thanks, Hamdy!
Contrasting wood looks fantastic. But, I almost shed a tear when you cut that big beautiful slab of walnut for a small piece.
Lumber starts somewhere. The rest will be used for some awesome stuff in the future.
Nice!
Nice design choices with the contrasting wood types.
Thanks, I wanted that pop of contrast.
Nice job Billy! That Holly really shines when combined with the walnut.
I was hoping for a timeless look.
Beautiful, Newton! Fantastic work! 😃
I really liked the idea!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! You too!
Those are beautiful boxes. Great craftmanship and video production skills! You definitely just earned my sub.
Nice job Billy, those look great!
Thanks, Michael!
Super Creation very good ..... I LOVE working wood congratulations .....🤩🤩🤩
Thanks!
Schaut wieder mal klasse aus, und auch super erklärt 👍
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words.
Love the use of Holly! Very fancy and that grain was perfect!
I dig how contrasting it is. I thought about using wenge and holly. Maybe in the future.
Looks great, Billy. No walnut or holly in my part of the world, but I can mill up some jarrah and blackbutt. (When I've fixed my broken shop. I'm working on it!).
Those are some beautiful wood species though and would make for a killer project.
Wow
Very nice!! Now, make a set from holly and sandwich a piece of walnut... :)
You're an anarchist. I love it!
A while back I made a box with bolivian rosewood and a padauk lid. Then I made an identical box out paudauk with a bolivian rosewood lid. I gave them to a couple of cousins that were brother/sister.
I love the holy and walnut... Such a great combo.
I'm curious how these would look if one of the walnut pieces of the top had the same outer dimensions as the box so the holly slab and the other walnut piece were inset to the base of the box. The exact same thing but the top piece of walnut laminated was equal to the outer dimensions of the box. I think the contrast and the out
Official gap would create a different contrast
Give it a shot! Try it and post it on social media (if you have it). It would be interesting to see.
very nice;-)
Thanks!
That Holly is an excellent accent wood. I had no idea it was so clean and bright. I’ve never seen anyone use it. Nice alternative from the typical Maple. I wonder when you might come across some Hickory in your shop to showcase 😁🤔 see what that wood is all about ! Just a thought, no pressure! Enjoy your channel 👍
I would love to use hickory for something. I'll have to think about the right project.
Totally thought it was some kind of plastic in the thumbnail due to how bright white it is. Very cool stuff indeed.
tea, sugar, coffee. be the poshest set of those going.
I ended up with a bench dog router plane based on a Rob Cosman review.
I don’t need it. But if I can, I’ll cut a fricken dado in the back of a piece no one will ever see just to use the router plane. Someone asked why I did it? To cut down on weight. Real reason. I like my router plane.
They are great at what they do!
I can't find holly anywhere in So Cal, do you have a local distributor that ships?
Cosman uses it a lot and it is a gorgeous accent wood, so white.
I wish I had a local place. I haven't spent time researching it. I simply did some Google searches and bought online. Don't remember where off hand.
Beautiful build Billy can I ask see the lids did u cut them to the same size as the box to then rest on top 🏴👍
I made the boxes and then cut each lid so they fit inside them. They're all from one board so the grain flows from box to box.
@@NewtonMakes that's great Thanks for that gonna attempt one them got nice bit of elm that'll work nice with chestnut lay instead the Holly 🏴
This would be called an accent piece. Sometimes used as a centerpiece on a dining table. Or centered on a hall table to catch keys and change.
Looks great. Got a thought or maybe a question. If you had put a fretsaw blade in your band saw, couldn't you have cut your original piece into thirds for thickness to get all of the tops you needed? Wouldn't have lost the 1/8 inch to one cut. Just curious.
There are multiple ways to tackle things. For instance, I could have put a circular saw blade in my table saw, which would have been thinner.
3:20 what's the name of that machinery that's grinding off the edges of the base of the box?
Hey Billy, I love this build. Out of curiosity how tall did you make each box? Also I can't seen to find much holy...keep the awesome builds going. Subbed for awhile now and a supporter of the channel
I think they're about 2.75 - 3" tall. I don't remember exactly. Holly is tough because it's not common and doesn't grow big. I had to order mine online. It's a tad pricey but necessary for some of my projects.
What about seeing how ash, white oak or another light colored wood works with walnut? Don't be afraid to substitute. Love the grain and the project
Good Morning
Do you have information on making the small press you used in the video
Yep, I have a video showing how to build it.
Nice boxes but why do you use top oil that is for food prep and not polyx oil ?
I used it because I'm not sure what I will ultimately use them for. I've used polyx and top oil and haven't found a noticeable difference. I believe others have said the same thing.
Great project, what is it called?
So far this piece is called, "three modern boxes filled with Lego sitting on tray." rolls off the tongue.
What was the thickness of the box sides?
About 3/8"
I would call it square cubed.
Where can holly be purchased?
Try DomEx Hardwoods.
Call it a jewelry valet
Kind of wish you had gone all hand tools on this one, but beautiful anyways. I reckon they might look good as candle holders or something similar.
It's rare that I'll go all hand tools on anything. Nothing against the method, but I only have a couple days to make something to get the video out.
You seriously cut up a walnut slab for that little base? You're killing me, Smalls.
