EEP! I was wrong, there are 40 colors that are lightfast enough to use on my colored pencil work! I missed a yellow ochre color! :D
Lachri Fine Art What pencil did you use for the initial sketch? Water soluble graphite? Or regular graphite pencil?
Lachri Fine Art What's lightfast? 🙂
+Jennifer Kent I used a regular 4h graphite pencil :)
Vicky, Lightfast is a term used to determine how long a color will last before it starts to fade when exposed to light :)
Vicky Chatz Lightfast means it will not change color due to light exposure. The higher the lightfast rating the longer the color will stay unchanged. Its how archival theu are
i say this always but I just love these reviews! tells me so much more about the pencils than those normal color swatches people usually do. thank you for doing these! 💖
Yeah the color swatches never help me on reviews. Even for making a review I feel like I can't give my full opinion if I don't actually try the product on a project. That's how you find out how well they layer/detail/blend etc :D
Lachri Fine Art that is so right! Also I've found that the best way of finding new art supplies is by finding the artist you admire and whose artworks you wish your own would look like and check what supplies they use. That way you know the problem is not in your supplies if you don't get the results you are looking for, but you only need to practice more. ☺ your channel has been a goldmine to me that way 😄
I don't know when this video came out, but Derwent recently came out with a line of lightfast colors, currently at 36. The company plans on expanding the line to 72 throughout 2019. See Art Gear Guide with Harry.
I was so disheartened when I saw the lightfast chart, but this review has me wanting to buy them ASAP! I am thinking about buying them open stock, so I avoid purchasing the pencils with low ratings. I know I can trust any reviews from your channel as your opinions are always backed up with video. I loved the artwork, so excited to see more work with these pencils.
I was really disappointed too. Even more so because I didn't get the ratings until after I had already fallen totally in love with the pencils. I was just showing my husband the ones that are lightfast and there really are some beautiful colors I'm happy to add to my regular "usable" set of polychromos and luminance now, so I'm trying to look at the positive lol.
Lachri Fine Art haha yes positivity is key. I am making a list of future pencils to buy!
I just have to say I've watched this about 4 times. Every time you do a color pencil piece you wow me and when they come to life they just make me so happy. Thank you :)
Glad to see you back at it! I've been working on my colored pencil skills and I can't wait to tune into more videos!
I knew the definitive review of these pencils would come from you Lisa :) I like when reviews show a real project completed with the product, well done as always! And welcome back, I missed you and chicken!
Thanks :) The shoulder chicken says hi :P
It's amazing to watch the build up of the pencils. Absolutely fascinating. Thanks
So good to hear that Derwent is coming up with something oilier! Derwent was my first love, but lately i've been gravitating towards oil-based coloured pencils... :) Can't wait to get my hands on these!
Oh you will love these then!
Another great review! Your color choices in this are stunning. Love the piece!.
Thank you!
My life finally feels complete with your videos back!! I've missed you see much! Glad you're back, I hope your healthy as ever again :)
haha thanks :)
Just a beginning artist. I found your channel and thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. By the way, I find your voice so relaxing for some reason. Thanks for all your hard work and instruction.
The color is magnificent on this! It is so lifelike, I expect him to turn and look at me at any time.
so glad you made a review on these! i was waiting for it to know your opinion cause im interested on the procolour, and its good to see them in action
:D
Another wonderful and informative video, amazing art. And every time I am so excited about Lachris lovely bird 🐦
Wow! Another AMAZING work of art! so glad you're feeling better. I'm so excited to get my hands on those pencils. great review. thank you.

Excellent review and a stunning work of art! Thank you! :)
I'm so happy your back and better! :D
I love your videos and you are a huge motivation for me, missed you :3
Thank you :)
Incredibly helpful! The set that I use from Derwent went out of run ages ago, so I've been considering purchasing Derwent for a while. Thank you!
:D
Thanks a lot! I thought I was done purchasing colored pencils...now I want these. Glad you are back. I hope you are feeling better.
LOL I still say I'm going to make my slogan "Lachri Fine Art, spending your paycheck one video at a time" haha
your reviews are always so in depth i love them
LOL These ones sure work better for my techniques than coloursoft do :P
I recently picked up a copy of Derwent colored pencils for portraits, and I really love them. I'm going to have to invest in these eventually, as that I really like Derwent's quality. I have a whole set of graphite drawing pencils as well.
Im so excited! just got this set along with lyra rembrant colored pencils!
this is gorgeous Lisa!
Thanks Lindsay!! :D
One of my favourite videos Lisa! Thank you, glad you're back. I'm interested to see if derwent listens to customers and works on lightfastness for the future :) going to grab some openstock when they come out because of this review ^_^ thanks!
Thanks :D
Yay! glad to see you back in my feed. I hope you are feeling better :)
Thank you :)
Good to have you back Lisa!
Thank you :)
Hello Lisa, great review! I will have to try these and I'm hopeful that they might reformulate because I just checked the Derwent site and they must have reformulated the Inktense! Nearly all of them are now lightfast, pencils and blocks.
Beautiful work Lisa. You have done a fabulous job of reviewing these pencils.
Also, I love seeing your bird. I had a female cockatiel when I was a teenager. They are so beautiful and clever.
Thank you :)
Love the review. That piece is so gorgeous and I love how shimmery the fur looks!
When I saw the piece on instagram, I wondered if the departure from your usual style came from some limitation in the pencils, and I'm glad to see that it wasn't.
Thanks! Nope, the different colors on this one were something that I think I will be doing on future pieces. I really liked the oversaturation on this one! :D
Your reviews are exceptional! Thank you for taking the time to give us the information we need to move forward in our art.
Wow I’m so happy fir you Lisa it’s been awhile since Iv watched CZcams and I’m amazed youv gained #’s in audience as you should! your the best at what you do...you should be a consultant fir every art supply productivity testing.. although you basically are now : ) you can pick up anything and figure them out pros and cons with unbiased reviews ; ) thats how I found you ..when u started then switched with polychromos, then watching you dabble with water solubles... so happy what ink-tense or derwent has done promoting your art [ the way I look at it )keep being your awesome self
Thank you soooo much for all the information you give in all your utube demonstrations. This particular demonstration was really informative and makes me feel like getting a set for myself..thank you
I'm glad you liked it :)
So glad to see you back and doing what you love most...I think we all missed you so much. Thank you for doing this review, I have the Derwent Artist pencils and to be honest, I really don't like them but that should improve with practice.
These blow the Derwent Artist pencils out of the water!
Yay are inspirational. I have had fun getting back to playing with art. Thank you.
Thank you :)
So nice to see you back online Lisa ^_^
We were all missing you.
Thank you :) My schedule will still be pretty sporadic for a while but I will upload when I can :D This *should* have been this Wednesday's video lol.
Wow you are an incredible artist! The leopard is amazing and beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you :)
Thank you so much Lisa for this great review! I am so excited about these pencils. I cannot justify paying the price that the Luminance cost in Canada as I am a hobby artist. These sound fantastic 😀
They were wonderful to work with!!
I've wanted to give these pencils a try. Thank you for the review it's been very helpful. I wonder, did the pencils wear quickly?
I wish these were lightfast so I could buy the original 😍😍 gorgeous leopard, nice video!!
It's turned out beautifully!😍
Thanks :D
You did a beautiful work. Thank you
I hope you're feeling better! I can see myself going broke with pencils lol
Hi Lisa,Welcome back,we missed you a lot. I hope you're feeling better, you look great.
Thanks :)
Awesome review, very helpful specially for us beginner's
My bird goes nuts when I watch your video. She loves your voice.
These pencils work beautiful!
Thank you for a great review. I don't know if you read the comments of older reviews Lisa but I would like to ask if the colours are the same as the polychromos to which they seem to be similar in feel and qualities. Are they worth getting in addition to the Polychromos or would the colours only duplicate them. Perhaps only the lightfast ones. Thanks again.
Jim
This turned out beautiful! Would you consider doing a tutorial where you use both the coloured pencils and intense? That would be great to see!
Also, as far as the lightfastness goes, if you frame your work under UV glass can you still sell the originals?
I will add that idea to my to do list for sure!! For the lightfast issue UV sprays and UV protecting glass do make a giant difference. I know a lot of great artists who use fugitive prismacolor colors in their work and just frame them behind UV glass. I'm personally not comfortable with that for anything I sell. I can't say which of us is right or wrong, we just have to do what we're most comfortable with :)
Hehee, your shoulder chicken is so cute!! Thank you for the awesome review =)
Gorgeous cat! I love watching your videos, they always relax me:)
Great info and amazing Leopard demo
Thank you :)
I loved that, such a gorgeous big cat
Good to see you Lisa! Good to see Shoulder Chicken too! Beautiful work, I can see why you were disappointed with the lightfast ratings for the purples/yellows as they really do add a richness to the colours. I thought I'd finally bought all my requirements for the coloured pencil work, but looks like I'm going to start shopping again!! I'm not always happy with the Polychromos greens, so it will be interesting to see what are available with these Derwent pencils. Thanks again Lisa!
There are about 6 lightfast greens in the set :D Lots of browns. I'm actually pretty happy to have this many brown/tan shades to choose from. I'm still mourning the purple and pink colors though lol. They were SO pretty :(
Lachri Fine Art Oh no, definitely going shopping then, always on the look out for more browns too!! Thanks for the info! 😀
I always trust your reviews😀 thanks.
Gorgeous image. Lots of great tips. Thank you. Is the technique of layering colour with blacks applicable to watercolour or gouache?
Guache yes, watercolor is a bit different. You can layer but it's not quite the same because it can also lift when water is reapplied.
Beautiful drawing,
I have a cockatiel too!!
Thanks for the review Lisa. I've got a question, do these add an extra to f.i. a Polychromos set or Prismas? Like in different colors/shades? Or just easier/better in use?
I've got both these sets and are contemplating if I really need this extra set, if it adds something to my collection. I'm not a professional artist, I just love to color.
There are some shades that are different for sure so that is a bonus, plus I just really like how these perform :)
Hi there!I was wondering what solcent do you use for layering the base colours?Apparently this is the blocking point in my coloured pencil drawing..although I am also using the procolour pencils..
Your work is beautiful thank you
i know the pencils are not light fast but can you protect an image with a fixative spray as i'm not sure what types of art you can use the spray on.
I would buy that, regardless of coloured fastness, it's that beautiful
Thank you :)
looks good and am look forward to seeing how they work in comparison to my derwent artists set. tfs
I hope you share the comparison :D
I am so pleased with the vast amount of info you present. I am disappointed to see these are not light fast because I was looking for pencils water soluable.
When I was young I had allergy problems with mineral spirits, so please tell me which are water soluable. Thank you
Great video and your "shoulder chicken" is adorable!
Thanks :D
Lisa, I'm a huge fan! Love your work. I'm trying to get back into art; I've always had talent but never really developed my skills. My question is, I'm trying to build a collection of work but I'm unsure of how to go about it. Do you start many different pieces at once and work on them as the paint dries or start one and finish one at a time? I currently have 3 pieces started now; I try to start a new one to wait for the paint to dry (oil paint). Just not sure what to do to build a huge body of work...any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
I normally recommend one at a time so that you actually finish everything. When having a lot of projects going at once it's too easy not to get anything finished because you lose interest :)
Fantastic artist
Lachri!!!!!!! Im so glad your feeling better. welcome back. 😉 This is my favorite peice youve done. ive seen LOTS of your videos. super cool these pencils worked so good. one question, how does the white compare to luminance? you mentioned the chinese white. below the touch up white, what is the next brightest white? thanks so much for sharing! love your work.
This is not as opaque as the white luminance but more opaque than the polychromos white :) Derwent drawing chinese white is the most opaque IMO.
Thanks!!
It would be really really cool if you could test the caran dache pastel pencils!!!
BEAUTIFUL
Such a shame that not all of them are lightfast, those colors are just gorgeous! Definitely would love to see them expand the line with more lightfast ones :) Beautiful work! That purple is just wow! :D
I agree! :)
I have the Prismacolors and some Polychromos... I love the Prismacolors so much, but I hate to constantly sharpen them. The Polychromos keep their point, but I don’t like how they blend and the colors are not as vibrant. Blend the Procolours like the Prismas or more like the Polys? I am struggling with the decision what I want to buy...
okay so I have just started practicing drawing again so far for four months, for the first time in 8yrs, do you have a broken down beginners guide for colored pencils, and the proper materials and brands?
Hello! Thank you for the great review! I was thinking about getting some of these after I heard about them however I am not a professional and would be primarily using them for Colouring things(like in adult colouring books). Would you recommend them for that purpose?
Absolutely! :)
I was wondering if there could be a way to review blick studio colored pencils? I did some reading on them and I read that they are light fast and easy to work with but I'm not convinced yet.
Just beautiful Lisa.
Thank you :)
Hi Lisa, have You tried to blend with Sansodor of Winsor and Newton? I'm new atte painting with colors and I can 't find Mineral Spirits un my country.
Did that bird just sing GOT theme? Too cool, the critique of Derwent was cool too!
Nice review. I decided to give it a try after this video
Thanks :)
this was so helpful
1 that now i know why did my animal drawings did not look relistic,i had the contrast ,but i did not make detail on the fur
2 now i know which pencils i would like, thank you
Beautiful !!!
Thank you :)
Hey LachriFinsArt! I am looking to add some new colors/shades to my polychormos and luminance and I don't really mind the light fastness rate since I'm just a hobbyist. Is there any colors in this set you would recommend to pick up as open stock?
Grape was probably my favorite...of course, that one is not lightfast /sigh. The rest are really up to you! :D
I watched some of your videos that were awesome but I also want to learn drawing or fine art so where should I start watching from?
Hi Lisa I am a big fan of your work and I have just gotten the polychromos set of 36 and I am loving them, I am thinking of doing some projects with the canson mix media pad but I don't know what to draw. I dont have much access to strathmore because of shipping and also fabriano because of price range. Do you have any suggestions for cheaper and good papers? Thanks
Michael
Maybe try the canson Mi-Tientes (work on the smooth side). That's worked nicely for me :)
Hello I love your drawings, question I noticed that you are using a brush for blending is it dry or wet? With what if so?
It has Odorless Mineral Spirits on it :)
Hey lisa, about the colored pencil painting kit, do you use the textured fixative on your normal paint thinner color pencil projects? I just tried out the textured fixative on my project, and while it really does work, theres a problem- it leaves a shine layer that is really noticeable if you don't put additional color pencil on top. My artwork turned out fine, but dear god the shine unevenness...do you experience it with powder blender?
I've only used the texture fixative spray on projects where I was working on sanded paper with powder blender. Sometimes it spits droplets out that are shiny but I just cover them with colored pencil and everything looks even. It may be a difference of how much we're using. On projects where I'm working on watercolor HP paper like this I've used touch up texture (the one in the nail polish like bottle). That one adds a bit of gloss but anywhere I use it I always go over that area with colored pencil completely so there doesn't end up being shine issues for me there.
are these different derwent pencils that you didnt like in ur otherreview? im new ish.
feeling frustrated with trying to teach myself how to draw. stated in dec but disabled so limited.
Can you please tell me whether I should buy them or prismacolors for portraits?? Also prismas are too expensive in my area..
Have you ever used Soho Urban Artist pencils by Jerry's ArtaRama? I own the 36 set and they've held up well with my beginner attempts to learn a more painterly style, but I'm curious what a more experienced artist would think of them. The CPSA has rated them for lightfastness, but I'm not a member so I don't know what the ratings were.
Thanks for the great review! I may have missed it, but are these pencils the diameter of a polychromos or a luminance or a different size?
These are thicker than the Polychromos. I'm not sure of the exact number though. They both sharpen in the same sized sharpener though.
What is the difference between these and Derwent artist pencils?
can u blend intense without solution im disabled so need to solely use color pencils or gel pens with one handed easy lid. im 37 have never looked at colored pencils for myself before its cofusing inktense and watercolor and normal color pencils.
So when you’re blending (this may sound like a stupid question but when you’re blending are you basically taking like turning the pencil into paint and then moving around like paint because that’s where I get confused when you try to use “blenders”??
any tips on creating good realistic black hair, so it does not look flat. love ur videos
Check out this video :) czcams.com/video/Ri-4RCEdfe0/video.html
Awesome... Thank you...
Just wondering for the non-lightfast colours can you use a lightfast spray or UV protected glass to overcome that problem?? I realize it's not ideal, but at this stage I am still a beginner and not selling my work, it frequently is given to family/friends.
You can use sprays, I'm not sure how they will react to these pencils, I know a lot of UV sprays behave badly with polychromos for example. Better yet would be framing it behind UV protecting glass. While I personally wouldn't be comfortable selling the work with non lightfast colors, framing it behind uv glass and giving it to friends and family shouldn't be a problem for you :D
I having trouble blending with colored pencils what can I use.
What happens to the piece if you use non lightfast pencils? or if you use a non lightfast color as an 'underpaintng' or base color and then put a lightfast color on top? kinda like you did with the black spots? what will happen to that with time??
The non lightfast colors fade. Something can start bright magenta for example and in time fade to almost no color at all. In this case, with using the non lightfast purples under the black, as those faded the black would start to appear very dull, as would the rest of the leopard's coat where I have purples and magenta's blended in.
Love watching your tutorials. One question. A lot of my prisma color pencils break after I sharpened it. They are old. But in good condition. Have u had these kinda problems. And what can you recommend about that or other colored pencil that a decent.
Try an electric sharpener. Breaking pencils and Prismacolor pretty much go hand in hand unfortunately :)
Lachri Fine Art. Ok thank you
