- Today I am going to review the full set of 72 Derwent Chromaflow Coloured Pencils, in a lovely tin with a Macaw on it! I had previously made a video about their smaller flagship 24 set, but I definitely had to get the larger tin because the more colours the better! Review includes swatches of all pencils, and an artwork too.

I love the Derwent Chromaflows. They make a fine addition to the Prismacolor range and are very similar. I'm so glad people are discovering and appreciating the Chromaflows. I use my pencils mainly for adult coloring books or character drawings so they're perfect for me. I've had mine for about a year now, and the Chromaflows still have that new pencil wood smell. I love it. Also side note for fellow US based artists- Blick now sells the Chromaflows in open stock so if there's specific colors you want you can pick them up there.

I just purchased the 72 and am really happy with them,I think they'll make a perfect travel set with the lighter wood encasement and limited palette.Speaking of palette,love the choices here and that we got some Aussie names in there like Bondi Blue and Eucalyptus😁 ...looking forward to using them in tighter spaces along with prismas in colouring...yay! Thanks for the review,it helped me decide to go ahead .

I do the smell test on new stuff too, especially on paper 🤣
You could make little "tabs" out of packating tape to lift out the trays easier. Since I feared they wouldn't hold if I used only small ones I applied a strip of fabric tape across the whole tray of my Prismacolor pencils and that holds up quite well for the last three years of moderate use.
The duck is beautiful. Thank you for the test, if one of my Prismacolor pencils is no longer usable I can now replace it with the next similar colour of a Chromaflow pencil. 🥰
Thank you, and yes these are great alternatives to Prismas, though there aren't as many colours in the range.
@@BeckyTregear While they don't offer as much colours the price is way better. Single pencils of Prismacolor are not easily available for me and they cost about € 2.80 plus P&P while I can get the Chromaflow for about € 2.- (currently on sale for € 1.60) at the art shop. And I don't trust the quality of Prismacolor enough to buy them online. But first I have to use them up which in my case may take years 😀

Thanks for the review of the Chromaflow - I have been looking for something similar to the Prismacolor that you can buy in a set but also Open Stock for replacements. I must be due for another "just looking" trip to the Art Shop in Bayswater to see if they sell the Chromaflow in Open Stock 😀
They're a decent alternative to Prismas. And yes the Art Shop has them open stock, at least online as I just checked now, haha! $2.50 each.
I absolutely love my Chromaflow .I have a 36 set . I think most colours have that buttery feeling of the Lightfast. I also love and use Coloursoft.
I"m glad you like them too! I think I prefer the Chromaflow to the Coloursofts....but both are good. 🙂
Thanks Becky for another great review. I love how you always do an artwork at the end. Thanks to your videos I’ve just invested in some luminance and lightfast pencils so I’d better give them a go before trying any others 😂

I have a small set of 12. I didn’t expect anything spectacular but I was surprised that they are very nice and creamy. Two of my pencils had broken cores, and the thin barrel felt a bit strange (compared to luminance and Derwent lightfast pencils), but other than that they are very nice. Lovely duck!
Yes I was surprised with how nice they are, when I got the 24 set to begin with. I knew I had to upgrade to the 72 set. They're lovely - of course having broken cores is always heartbreaking! I think my set is fine though.
I learned that you can "repair" a broken Prismacolor pencil by zapping it a few seconds in the microwave. In my case it worked. If the pencil is too broken to use and you didn't throw it away yet it may be worth giving that method a try.

I do enjoy pencils, but boy of boy do they take a long time. Because I started really concentrating on learning colour pencils since early 2023, my paint easels are being neglected. I don't have time to paint, as pencils take up all my time. They just take forever, but the payoff is worth it. I'm hoping I become a better painter by getting more practice with the higher details that pencils help me learn.
Painting and pencil skills tend to complement each other quite well. And yes, pencils take foreverrrrr! 😂

yeah i saw that 5 and below (on the page you printed) are supposed to not be very lightfast. i was dissapointed looking there at just how many fives there are. A lot of 7's and 8's, but sooo many fives too.
That's the usual case with many pencil sets. The Derwent Lightfast and Caran d'Ache Luminance ranges are the ones to go for when it comes to having pretty much everything in the high lightfast category.

Lovely work as always Becky! You inspire me to dig out my coloured pencils. Love the way you combine the pencils with watercolour in the duck painting! I find doing a whole piece in coloured pencils really hard on the wrists. I think the combination it’s watecolour is a brilliant solution to that and of course there’s no lovelier medium for rendering water than watercolour! Thanks as always for a great video ♥️🇨🇦
Thank you! I enjoy combining different mediums together - watercolours and pencils work well! Plus watercolours take a lot less time to paint than pencils which take entirely too long for my limited levels of patience, haha!
That's a beautiful drawing Becky. I bought the 24 set a 3 years ago & they smelt rancid. I usually love the smell of pencils but this was an awful chemical smell. I aired them out for 2 months & they still smelled bad. After 3 years the smell is still there. I find them painfully too skinny, even though I use Prismas. The Prismas are easier on the hand being so soft. I really don't like my Chromoflows, I found them dry, scratchy, barely ok at blending dry, not as good as Polys or Prismas, plus mine break easily. I do love the artwork on the 24 set tin. Maybe they have improved the formula since then or I got a bad batch. The 72 colour palette looks really pretty. I love my other Derwent pencils & they smell great. Thanks Becky ☺

Hi Becky lovely review I have the 24 and the 72 set of chromoflow when I brought the 24 set a week later they released the 72 set grr lol.. they are beautiful pencils to use.. I recently brought the colour soft 72 and light fast 36 set during amazon Australia back to school sale in January they came down really cheap.. I do have the 24 set of light fast too.. now I want the rest of the lightfast pencils ✏️.. ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊xxxx
It's so annoying when that happens; the moment you buy something, an upgrade comes out! 😂 The Lightfast pencils are well worth having!
@1.26 Becky "And of course the all important smell test" ... I have Congenital Anosmia, I was born without a sense of smell... I have no idea what my art supplies smell like, it wouldn't occur to me to sniff them, especially when I know some art supplies need good ventilation. So what do they smell like?
I'm sorry to hear that! I tend the other way in that a lot of smells make me nauseated very quickly because they're too strong. The pencils smell like freshly cut wood, but also it's quite a unique odour that is specific to pencils and I don't know what it is exactly.

Hi Becky I brought the 150 set Derwent Chromaflow’s for my treat ( Amazon UK) and love the color Egyptian Blue ....just wonderful . Just need the Luminance pencils now… waiting for a decent sale hahha thanks for sharing happy swatching

@@bethmegansmith4642 According to The Art Shop, only 100 of the pencils will be available as open stock....like what about the other 50??? It's so stupid if that's actually the case! I'm going to wait a while until they've been on the market for longer before making that decision, lol.

The Derwent Coloursoft is actually more Lightfast in general. They are the 2nd most Lightfast pencils made by Derwent, only 2nd after Derwent Lightfast..

Kind of like limited sets more than the big ones, you use more of the colours and have to make more artistic choices. Further exploration of this is in a Lars von Trier movie called The Five Obstructions where he challenges a filmmaker to remake one of his shorts with something different missing each time.
Limited sets definitely bring out the creative ideas! But I also love a full set so I can have ALLLL the colours! 😂
Hi Becky! It looks really pretty. I don't have these pencils. I have some student grade ones, the prismacolors, and the polychromos pencils. I do love colored pencils.
Me too! Prismas and Polys are pencils I use often.
I think I like the smaller, chunkier tin, but I'm not sure. The colors looked quite nice!
I like this tin shape a lot! It is easier to pick up and not feel like the lid is going to pop off one end.
Also….nothing like the smell of a box of Crayola crayons, too!
I haven't tried them yet but I heard they're good on black paper

How many pencils are repeated from the 24 set to the 72 set?
I would guess all 24 of them.
Pretty sure all of them are in the 72 set - they've just expanded the colour range. So I have 24 doubles now, lol.
Are you going to buy 150 colors of Derwent Chromaflow too?
Do you mean a different line of pencils? Unless they've released more Chromaflows while I haven't been looking! 😂
