I talked to the great people at PanPastel and they gave me the lightfast ratings. Using the ASTM scale, this is what their star system equates to:
★★★★ = I on the ASTM scale (this is the most lightfast)
★★★ = II on the ASTM scale
★★ = III on the ASTM scale
This is VERY good news for those of us who sell our work!
I think you messed up the star system a bit.
Oh weird. It's written correctly but posting wrong. I went to edit it and it's showing the correct number of stars 0.o I'm going to have to use icons instead >
Now 3 years later I'm watching this...I bought a decent set of PP at least a couple of years ago and haven't really used them. You offer some great tips and how to's that make me want to get in there and work with them. Just swatching and doodling around with color mediums tells you very little about how they're going to work and how you need to handle them. Thanks!
Loved this painting ! When you added the blue over the head and back made that owl leap forward !!!
Thanks for the inspiration
I'm a retired Hollywood makeup artist and love all sorts of pastels. I use cheep eye shadow applicators and pointed q-tips to blend as those blending tools don't last even if you're careful. Blending pastels has very similar rules of blending makeup. I urge everyone to try them.
You probably dont care at all but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost the login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Drake Jaxon Instablaster =)
@Owen Walter Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hi Lisa, For such a skilled artist, you always make your incredible outcomes feel achievable. I find I turn to you time and again when I need to be reminded that "I can do this!" I've been on the fence with Pan Pastels, as like you, I just "can't do" soft pastels. The texture and mess makes me crazy and kicks my OCD off the charts! I really appreciate your honesty in your reviews as well. Well, just wanted to say "thanks!" It's been awhile since I had and sometimes as artists, we forget how others have their insecurities about their work (no matter their ability level) just like I do. Wishing you all the blessings that 'your' art in turn blesses all that follow you. xxx
One last thing to add. Your channel has taught me to divide up my work more and be more patient. That is the best thing for me and has helped me not rush my outcome or get as frustrated with myself. It has made the difference in whatever I am working with. Like I felt like that one thing has helped me produce a better outcome.
I was a make up artist for many years, I always wanted to use my make up pallets on paper. Apparently someone else had the same idea LOL
I am convinced that someone invented these after looking at their eye makeup and going, "What if ... ? Oh WTH, let's try it!" and it worked out.
I love Pan Pastels. Ideal for use with coloured pencil. I checked your channel when I was learning about them, and was surprised not to find any tutes on this medium by you.
Really glad you’ve discovered the joy of using them.
Thanks for all your videos.
i like how those pan pastels work, the look is nice and the easy blending is great. thankyou for shareing with us.
I’ve been considering buying these for a while and am so glad I found this video!
Thank you so much for putting out this content
In high school many moons ago I used mainly India Ink, acrylics, or oil pastels and that was the inexpensive brand as we were teens and trying different new media out. I didn’t think I’d like pastels but after doing a project portrait of a friend who posed for our class and realizing it not only looked like him but turned out decent for a beginner… I still love them and keep some handy in both oil and chalky… but these, oh my…. look so smooth and rich, I must have some! To think I nearly bought an artist quality set of pastel blocks. Oh no, this is where I must go next. I have extremely soft makeup brushes to use with this purchased to apply craft colors to cards with and think they will also work spectacularly.
I’ll buy two sets of 20, shading & blenders, and metallics, plus 3 palettes to hold them and that ought to hold me awhile. After looking at the costly set of 80 I realized there are duplicate colors in these sets! It’s more affordable to buy smaller sets and choose wisely which ones. I downloaded their chart because they do not make this selection process easy, coded each set and spotted duplicates, then decided which I would get the most out of. Thanks for the demonstration! I also plan to use them with my art pencils and other whatnots. It’s our art and we’ll do whatever we went to it. haha
As you may have noticed by my icon, I’m also a long time digital artist and yet have traditional art as my roots which I keep wandering back to. Your skills are impressive and I’ve learned some great tips from you here. Again, thanks so much for this…
I’m so glad you tried Pan Pastels! I knew you would love them! This is one of my favorite pieces you’ve done!
Wow. Amazing work. That soft background made that gorgeous owl really stand out. Love it!
Lisa you are just the best artist ,just love the owl ,and the background.
Lisa you are sooo good! I aspire to be like you! I love drawing and painting animals! Ive been watching your channel for years and your the one who made me want to be a animal artist. THANK YOU!
amazing - you have only just started using Pan Pastels and you have totally nailed it - you are too clever
I'm loving that eyeshadow
Great! Now i have to get all the pan pastels!! 😊
This demonstration is fantastic!! I am surely going to buy this pan set now! Your the best !
I watched the live stream (of course) and these really do look like a medium anyone could have fun with.
Thank you so much Lisa. This video is a big help to me for a future project. You've saved me a lot of time testing and the results are just what i hoped for. Fantastic work ❤️
Your owl is Wonderful! I LOVE panpastels! They are so easy to use . I got one set, then the pastel set & tge landscape set. I set !
Wow so realistic and superb!
Now that is a nice owl! I might have to try these...
I love your videos. You are a very amazing artist who does such fantastic work in so many different mediums!
Wow Lisa another great one!
This owl is gorgeous! The PanPastel look like a nice product to work with. Thanks for sharing 😊
I've never used pan pastels, but I remember when I discovered them, I wanted them so bad. This turned out great!
Félicitations Lachri!!!
Ce que vous faites et toujours très très beau et donne le goût d'en faire autant!
Merci pour vos cours et mon médium préféré est bien le Pastel!
Bonne continuation!
This is absolutely beautiful! I have never tried pan pastels but I began learning to use soft pastels this summer and I'd be interested to try the pan pastels. Thanks for sharing these videos! I love watching your progress; it's fascinating :)
LOVE THIS.
thanks for the useful video! It is inspirational and educational. The end result is a beautiful work of art
Amazing work.....
Love the outtakes at the end 😂😂
Very beautiful
YOur picture looks so much better than the original!!
Great video. Beautiful owl. Loved the bloopers at the end 😁😄
I debated with myself if I should if I should take the hit on the cost of Pan Pastels - this sold me. Thanks
so nice! thanks.
It's a very beautiful and realistic owl
I need a break from oil painting so thank you! This is perfect!
I like to switch mediums too! :D
You’re the Bestttt!💫🎨
Gooo Lisa! Master of all mediums!
Yay I got a heart 😻😺
Now you have two :P
Lachri Fine Art Gaaahhhhhhh! Master hearted me twice! My life is complete! Ahhhh!
Beautiful! What a great idea to combine both mediums! :-D
Amazing
nice Lisa, yes I love panpastels too ;-) easy to clean, erasable, I use spectrafix inbetween layers not on top (sanded paper 400), clean brush sideways on scott towels, I enjoyed them very much, easy pan to clean with tissus, if there is dust on pans, you put too much on tools ;-)
happy you liked them Lisa
I LOVE PAN PASTELS…..❤🎉I felt same as you til I tried them…..
Wait... what? You can layer pan pastels on top of CP? I didn't even dare try that before. That is SUCH good news :D
Saw you use them, bought them, LOVE them! Also use the Spectrafix with the mister Jason Morgan recommends. That really helps create such a nice fine mist.
I've yet to try the PanPastels but plan to. How did you find the durability of the applicator to be?
I like a fixative called Lascaux. It’s more expensive than many other brands but it doesn’t darken the colors and it is good for multimedia projects. I should try the one you recommended because I have been looking for a pump spray one.
This is fabulous. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and for all the helpful tips. I am sooo tempted to buy Pan Pastels after seeing your tutorial. You make it look so easy..... I am chuckling to myself because of course it is not easy at all.... you are just so talented.
Carol Clark Lisa makes everything look easy 😄
Is anyone on this sight old enough to remember the sitcom Blossom? Listening to this instructor made me think of Blossoms friend, Six. Lol, once I got past that, I thoroughly enjoyed this instructional vid. Your colors on the beak & feathers were really nice. I love the misty look of the background.
You're such a good teacher. I wish I would have listened to my own gut when I was a younger artist about resources. Plus I had a couple of friends who used to tell me in high school it was cheating. (I have no idea why I took that advice.) Your tip about using other colors for the highlights is a really good one too. I used to make that mistake all the time for highlights. My mind for the longest time kept telling me light is white and I relied on that rather than what I seen or experimented with.
Glad I could help :D
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! I am dying to try panpastels with my colour pencil! Its a good thing they sent you theses or you'd still be sayin...nope, don't like the chalky feel on my hands....haha! Thanks for sharing!
You are amazing.
Ylou have taught me so much
I feel the same way about pastels. I can't stand having chalky things on my hands because they feel so dry all the time anyway...However I do enjoy the concept of pastels as I experimented a lot with them as a child. I'm happy to find that there are other types of pastels that I can try that don't appear to be as uncomfortable to use.
Great video 😃. Loved the concept 😃. Although I never draw animals in my videos but this one inspires me to at least try 😅
Could you use this on a canvase instead of paper. Would you use a watercolour ground on the canvase to get the pan pastels to stick to the ground?
Absolutely beautiful. Animals.....one of my favorite subjects. I need to get a set of these. I also you colour pencil a lot. Also hate the feel of chalk pastels.
Love this piece so much, the softness in that background is so lovely. It's amazing what you can do with panpastels! Was so excited when you said you'd be trying these out!
buahaha the bloopers, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets tongue-tied at the weirdest moments xD 50% of the footage I record is just babbling LOL
Beautiful 🤩❤️ you are already a pro at pan pastel and this is your first time!?!
Amazing work. I find that pan pastel is very addictive because the medium gives me absolute freedom, you can work from dark to light, and light to dark and you can work from sharp edges to soft edges very easily.
I recommend Stabilo pastel pencils for the details. They are cheap high-quality pencils. The intensity and freedom are better than ordinary pencils. Big Hug
And if you lean your hand on your work by accident I recommend the two finger glove., made for pastel.
Also, do the procolour pencils layer well on panpastels; I would hope so since they seemed to do everything
Hi Lachri, Loved the painting, especially the soft forest background. I’m looking to get PanPastels and was wondering if you added any additional colours to your existing set of 20 ? Would you recommend getting this set over the other available set considering these are pure colours and the mixing colours seems pretty easy. Please advise. Thanks!🙏🏼😊
wow amazing; the realism is spectacular; can i put the fixatif spray with any kind of color pencils or only on polychromos pencils. Thanks.
Are you going to try pastels and colored pencils on the pastel board one day?
Your colored pencil on that board came out amazing.
I’m very happy about the lightfastness rating!
I like to give art as gifts and was worried it would fade strangely. Thank you for getting that information
Love pastels, but not tried pans yet . Thanks , looks like I'm off to the art shop again 🙈🙈😂😂
I did not know you could blend panpastels with OMS. That is really good to know!
Oh, and I use the powder blender and the Brush & Pencil fixatives with PanPastel, too. Never really had issue with them, honestly.
Lots of people in my classes who work with pastels wear surgical gloves. I don't bother because, well, it's easier than pain to clean off. If you work with some pastel pencils along with the pan pastels, you might be pleasantly surprised. You don't necessarily need sanded paper. I typically use colored pastel paper with a decent tooth. Try keeping the paper towel on the easel damp; it keeps the dust way down.
My one concern about using colored pencils over pastels and then pastels over the colored pencils, is whether this causes the pastels to eventually fall off the areas where they are applied over the oil-based pencils. Isn't that a problem with the "fat over lean" rule?
Thanks for the hint on the Spectrafix; I have been using Lascaux because it doesn't darken the pastels and can be applied over watercolors and watercolor pencils, but it's really expensive.
Am using Derwent coloursoft colour pencil with blending monaliza odorless spirt, but which types of brush's i want use? Type of stifeness, you give link, please.
I have a sensory processing disorder, so I could never use pastels or charcoal because the feeling of the dust on my hands and the sound of the materials on the paper drives me mad, but it sounds like pan pastels are a good alternative because it sounds like you can avoid getting it on your hands and it eliminates that scratchy sound. Maybe I’ll try them if I can pull together some cash :)
Beautiful work! How long did this piece take you to complete?
Hi, 1:19 am here in Colombia.
I would have thought you were exaggerating or even lying if I hadn't tried them myself. They are amazing.
Btw, check out Bokkei's channel! She uses panpastels and colored pencils.
I wonder if the blender PanPastel would work to soften the colors?
Absolutely stunning! Have you considered making videos on digital art ? Such as procreate on the iPad. I'll be travelling quite abit so it's more convenient to just take along the iPad with me instead of art supplies etc.
I want to try these out! Is there a cheaper option for paper?
What paper is an alternative for this type of work? Thanks
The glacine is that the same as the non sticky baking sheets? Can I use that as a sub? Not like im using it for baking :P
Is there a reason to use color pencil over panpastel as opposed to pastel pencils?
Isn't this kind of the same as using powder blender except instead of blending with color pencils it's pastel powder?
Was just wondering why you used pencils with your pans instead of pastel pencils. Lovely work Lisa.
Damn, this time I really didn't get a notification by youtube, I just stumbled across this because I have started checking your channel regularly. Seriously, what IS it with youtube?
I don't know. It's so frustrating! I'm glad you found it :D
How can i get that reference picture ?
What is the best way to trace an image on the paper so the lines are easy to cover ?
Thank you for your help
I use a digital projector from artograph and draw my image on with a graphite pencil or a colored pencil. Some have good luck using tracing and transfer paper.
I want to ask. What if I combine pastel pencil with normal colour pencil.. is it work? Thanks.
Hi. Are you using watercolor pencils in this demo or pastel pencils?
So did they ever explain the whole light fast ratings?
I was considering using these pans..I don't like oil pastels and the chalk sticks are very messy
Well OWL about that.
Come posso fare per avere una traduzione di sto video?
I have a suggestion for a video, let’s go to an art store together and buy art supplies together with you! That would be interesting !
Hey Lisa. Great work as always! But I feel spraying fixatives on pastels might not be a good idea. The droplets from the fixative spary leave spots by dissolving the pastel powder, which does not happen with colored pencils. So the fixatives don't work as well as they do with colored pencils, they might even damage a pastel artwork. I see that you speak about it in the end, but some pastel papers might not work as well. Moreover, adding several pastel layers makes it hard to make details on those layers. Thanks. Let me know if you have experienced the same.
I always recommend spraying your pastels with a fixative. Yes, there are artists who don't because some cause a color shift, but if you don't they really aren't very permanent at all on the paper. They will slowly sort of fall off the paper over time. You can see this on the matting of any framed pastel piece, even when sprayed with fixative. This problem is far less of an issue for pieces that have been sprayed than those that have not. Everyone should always do their own research and decide what they are comfortable with given any pros or cons. I don't see spots left from fixatives if it's done right.
Lachri Fine Art Thank you for your insightful comment Lisa. I have Sennelier pastel fixative and this one left tiny blotches on my pastel work (although I know how to use a fixative). Or maybe it is because I sprayed it over a pastel pad, which is a coated pad and is probably not compatible with any form of liquid on its surface and the coating comes off leaving the blotches. I see that SpectraFix (the one you used) is probably better and I might consider that for my future works. Keep up the fantastic work you've always been doing!!
I think I remember having a chance to "feel" the texture of pan pastels before... aren't they simular to those little pans of face makeup?
They have a smooth "moist" powder feel.
I wonder if you can still use paint brushes with them? 🤔
Do they have to DRY like paint in order to be able to paint OVER on top of them?
They are powder. They are not wet so you don't have to wait. They are just so fine that they feel velvety!
I bought 2 sets of pan pastels like maybe 5 years ago and I still haven't touched them.
This is so stunning, Did you find the Pan Pastels to be opaque like other forms of Pastels?
They are extremely pigmented, so quite opaque :D
Lisa! Try wood burning art, cuz I want to.
