    I am 43 years old. I can freehand anything my heart desires from my imagination or a reference for the sole reason that I have been practicing long. And I sure AS HELL trace! I just don't have the time to spend on my sketch, nor do I want to! For a lot of things I can just pop em out quick enough, but if I'm doing a portrait for someone that requires a perfect copy or some weird animal in some weird position I have never seen or drawn before, I trace it or use the grid method! Do whatever the heck you want! Don't listen to ANYONE that says if you trace you aren't a real artist. The old masters did it. There are literal pieces of art out there that are drawings an artist did while they were watching another artist do a portrait using an old fashioned grid reflector thingy!

    I didn’t start accepting commissions until I had gained enough confidence in my work and in myself, which didn’t happen until I attempted your techniques with odorless mineral spirits and then adapting my own techniques. Now, over two years later(!!!), I no longer blend with OMS but having done so greatly changed how I worked in layers. I created an 18x24” portrait as a surprise for a parent’s friend using OMS and then gradually used less and less in each picture following because I was happier and happier with my results. Thanks Lisa! ☺️

    Hi from Finland! One tip that I heard and used with reference photos was to change the contrast and adjust the color saturation so that you detect the color that is really more than just black. It has improved my drawing and now I don't need to adjust anything in my picture and that tip was really helpful as a beginner. The "hiding" colors that I did'n notice at first when I started doing art with colored pencils comes automatically included to the drawings. :) Thank you for your videos and tips and tricks! I've found my love for art once again after being on inspiration block. :)

    one of my recommendations is to hone your skills in coloring books, I've gone from zero skill to realism in just five years by practicing that way. Just make sure you're constantly pushing yourself to new levels, and you will make progress.
    Also if you need to darken your yellows use brown or orange.

    • @Lachri

      If you're looking for an all around balance of wax and oil based, I would go with the Derwent Lightfast. If you want more oil based, then the Faber-Castell Polychromos :)

Didn’t have any confidence when I started but I now have an exhibition of my work running all this month and have been booked in for next year. I also have two commissions I’m working on and have branched out into other media. Without your help - I wouldn’t have got this far so thank you from the bottom of my heart - you’re a lovely lady!

    WHY DO YOU USE MONA LISA MINERAL SPIRITS OVER GAMSOL? HOW LONG DO YOU WAIT BETWEEN LAYERS FOR IT TO DRY ?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  Před 2 lety +1

      Because Mona Lisa is waaay cheaper and they work exactly the same. I use the Mona Lisa for oil painting too so I like to buy it in larger quantities. The gamsol is suposed to be less toxic though so there's that. I'm not sure what actual studies were done to prove that. The dry time depends on your Temps, the type of paper you use and how much you used. It could be 3 minutes or 25. Hard to say there.

    I've got problems with human anatomy, mostly faces. And I don't think I can learn with tracing! That is too easy... It doesn't help me to get proportions right.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  Před 2 lety +6

      When you do something correctly over and over you will more easily recognize when something is wrong. I've never worked with someone in over 20 years of teaching where this didn't help.

    • @sambeawesome
      @sambeawesome Před 2 lety +3

      It takes a lot of patience and practice still, even with tracing. I recommend going slow and really paying attention as you trace. Ask yourself questions as you go. Look into the underlying skeleton and muscles too. Faces are one of the most difficult things as an artist to draw, so don't feel bad if it takes a while before you start seeing progress.

    • @artbydrbee
      @artbydrbee Před 2 lety +1

      Tracing REALLY REALLY helped me to learn how to draw accurately! Tracing is a tool which TRAINS your eyes and brain.. just trust the process! Even if you print out the reference photo, then shade the back side of the paper, then trace over it, trust me, it will help you! I am a self-taught artist and I took my biggest steps when I used tracing as a learning tool! Good luck and keep going 💪💪❤️❤️

      Humans are not my cup of tea either. When I do humans, I always get the eyes, nose and mouth wrong. And I haven't even started to colour humans in paint or coloured pencils yet so the skin tones and colour will be a hard lesson.
