When you're indenting, take a flashlight and lay it on the table so that it casts light sideways over your drawing surface. This will let you see your indentations as it will cast small shadows in all the valleys you're creating.

The tip: you can use it with watercolors, but the effect will be reverse. It's really convenient for painting flowers and leaves, you don't need to paint its veins above, the paints flow down the channels and make these places darker. Probably your watercolor brush has a pointed tip exactly for this.
Thanks for the useful video, I'm sure I saw this effect while drawing but never thought of using it!

I don't know if this has been said already but, if you gently lay Scotch Magic tape over the surface of your drawing and press down using the tool then carefully lift off the tape.

I used this technique for the exactly opposite in watercolor : ) Pigments will concentrate in the crevices to create beautiful darker texture. Works great for petals or grass fields. To preserve white spaces using watercolor, I can't think of anything but masking fluid. Does anyone know anything else that would work for white details?

I like to use a white wax based color pencil to preserve white. Clear & white crayons can work as well. Draw with your pencil or crayons first & then you can paint over them, as watercolor paint is wax resistant.

Hi Kirsty. I have used this technique for almost twenty years and if you use a small light on an angle it creates a shadow in the embossing making it much easier to see, also embossing tools can break and cut the paper so personally I use a dart with the tip filed down as this is much more substantial. It is also a good idea to work with the paper on a hard surface like MDF as if a surface is to soft the embossing is diminished and less visible. Thanks.

      1) get the tool (indenting tool)
      2) sketch out your picture
      3) if there are any white details eg white hairs on a beard or elderly person/animal fur/dew droplets/etc mark the paper with the indenting tool - use it like you would a pencil or pen but apply pressure on the paper
      4) when you add shading or colour to complete your drawing, the white details will remain clear as the pencil or pen won't penetrate the 'dents' you have made

I always apply indenting method to make hair and beard look more realistic. I heard about it 4 years ago from a channel name called Art by Ali Haider. Then i tried those indentation method for my first time and I was completely surprised by the results. All these years i studied this technique and found some disadvantages as well:
    1. Don't try indenting method on paper less than 100gsm.
    2. Indent couldn't be undone so, don't be experimental to try it on hands, nose, eyes, lips or any other part where it needs a smooth or darker shade and highlights.
    3. After indenting avoid making those bigger highlights from white pens, if something goes wrong it will scrach the paper if you try to undo it. It's best to use zero erasers instead to make highlights.

You could also do this when you draw lines with pencils and erase them. But the only problem is that it might be hard to erase completely and the pencil might break because you need to add force.

if you are a boy or girl without such a Tool,
you could do it with a Drilling Machine and a abrasive like a file or sanding paper.
use the Drilling Tool like a Mini lathe.
Look for deranged crotchet or knitting needles or something similar. spokes from defect motorbikes...
as a grip/holder, you can use some thermoplastic thing and put the heated "needle" (with pliers) in. or glue it into another thing you like to use as handle.
    if you still don't know
    the ask someone for help...
because you could give something to the helper, too.

Never seen this girl or been recommended this channel before. Was watching the thumbnail play, trying to read lips and somehow knew she was British. Had to click to see if I was right. Cool video too, always wanted to draw better and was interested in tricks artists had. Big detailed pieces seem like so much work. I knew there had to be special tools to make it easier or faster.

Once you’ve done your indenting, then adding the coloured pencil, you can’t add water on top, right? Or it would then bleed into the indents, true?
