This drawing exercise changed my life. It was the exercise that made me realize that drawing is a skill that can be learned - and anyone can do it. This exercise originates from the book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", by Betty Edwards. This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn how to draw. The premise is based on our right brain and that our left brain needs to be subdued in order for our right brains to take over. To force this to happen, we simply flip our reference upside down and draw it this way.

When I was going to school to become a graphic artist I had to take a course based on the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". I already considered myself an accomplished artist so I was a bit annoyed that I had to take the class since the description seemed fairly rudimentary. The first day of class we entered the room to find a number of still life scenes staged around the room. The instructor told us to select one and draw it. A number of people immediately panicked. What do you mean draw it? I don't know how to draw, that's why I'm here! The instructor persisted and eventually everyone did what they were told and at the end of the class the teacher collected the drawings and put them away without comment. As I looked at the drawings before they were collected I could see that I was one of two or three that seemed to have any talent. Fast forward to the final day of the course, we walk in and the same still life scenes that were in class that first day are there again. The teacher gives us the same instructions as the first day. At the end of class the drawings are collected and put up on the wall next to the first day drawings. The progress was staggering. Without exception, every single person in that class had improved their skill to the level that most friends and family members would be very impressed with their talent. I'm talking about people who came into class drawing stick figures and by the end had a firm grasp of perspective, texture and shading. At the beginning I would have argued that there wasn't a whole hell of a lot that I could gain from the class but I was truly humbled by the progress my own work had made by the end of the course. I suppose you could follow the book but if you can find a course based on the book, I highly recommend it!

@@jonnawyatt I did fine art at college and I was BLOWN away by the graphic art class' art work, TRULY creative and incredible pieces that I was a little envious of! Their concept artwork was off the scale 💪

I bought that book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” in the 1980’s and I did every exercise in it, cover to cover. When I started I couldn’t draw a stick figure. By the time I was done, I was doing realistic portraits of my family. It’s an amazing book and you can actually FEEL the “switch” when the right brain takes over. I gave the book to my mother, and at the age of 60, she discovered she was a VERY talented artist.

I too worked through the book in the 80s....I disc8vered I could draw.
I am 63 and bought the book about a year ago. I had a little skill but still most work looked like a child did it. I am now creating "commissioned" drawings of pets and people are jaw-droppingly astonished at the realism. I'm a bit surprised myself! It has made art a firm part of my life now and I think it is an excellent exercise for keeping my brain young and active! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
My High School art teacher swear by that book. She couldn't understand how I can draw and be distracted with something else at the same time, because I would sit there and distract everyone around me. My poor art teacher, she was a gem.
I read this book and followed every step in detail. I then practiced every day for 3 years separating the left brain from the right while un-learning 60 years of bad habits. I then took drawing lessons from 4 different teachers. Today I am proud to say I can almost draw a stick man.

Ahhhh!! I learnt this exercise as a kid by accident. I wanted to draw something I saw in a book that someone else was using so it was upside down. That drawing turned out so much better than anything else I did so I did it more on purpose. It's quite fun and really helpful to this day when I struggle with proportions.
I want to ask you if you ever made Jesus your lord and your savior have you ever thought about turning to God? God loves you and wants you to come to him and he will give you salvation for free you cannot earn your way to heaven its a gift that you take from God through Jesus. Did you know that God is our Judge and even though He doesn't want anyone to go to hell alot will go there because they will try to earn there way into heaven God is our Judge and Jesus is our savior from the sins we committed. Since God's our Judge everyone will be in front of God on Judgement day some will be with Jesus and go into heaven and others God will send into Hell. This is why alot will go into He'll because they trust in there heart that there a Good person and they think that if they change there bad ways than they won't Go to Hell but since God's a Good Judge he cannot let sin be unpunished. that's like you on earth killing someone and then telling the judge you won't do it again! So don't put me in prison! That won't work. The only thing that will save you is if someone paid your fines and the judge can Justly and rightly let you out because someone paid for your fines. Jesus paid for our sins on the cross and he took the punishment of our sins on himself because He loves us he chose to die for you in hopes that you will turn to him because he knows that nothing will save you from Hell except Him except His work on the Cross. I’m a retired art teacher. When I taught this exercise to my middle schoolers, they were astonished how well their drawings turned out. It really does help you observe shapes and negative spaces that you wouldn’t otherwise “see.” Once they got familiar with this exercise, whenever they were drawing realistically and it just wasn’t looking right, they’d immediately turn the reference photo and their work upside down and could see what needed to be corrected! Great exercise!

Which probably works fine with references that can be flipped. The problem though is that copying references of this sort removes most of the actual skill involved with drawing. Somebody has already done the work of reducing 3 dimensions down to 2 dimensions and already composed the image. Sure, that can be helpful, but I don't really see much benefit to it.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade These were reference photos and the students were middle school age and a bit younger. The main purpose of the exercise was to teach my students to study and observe shapes, lines, negative spaces, etc. I also taught my students how to draw from real life objects: still life, self portraits, etc. But drawing wasn’t the only thing I taught. I love variety and introduced my kids to many forms of art media and styles of art.

I remember doing an upside down drawing maybe decade ago. Good exercise and it does teach you to look at lines and shapes and angles etc. Whenever someone says they can’t draw eyes, I tell them, you’re not drawing an eye, you’re drawing lines and shapes that just so happen to end up looking like an eye. 😀

🤯Holy cats that lesson COMPLETELY CHANGED THE GAME FOE ME! My lines dont look " grade school " anymore! It took exactly 5 minutes to feel the differemce. Sooooo appreciative!
My year 9 art teacher said “Draw what you see, not what you think you see” … it has always stuck with me when I’ve started to struggle and overthink when drawing. I hear those words and regroup and then start again.
The problem with that is that not everyone can "see". My Art teacher did that with us and I had on/off days where some days I could see and others I couldn't. As a kid I gave up on Art even though I loved drawing. I just assumed (incorrectly) that I had no natural ability even though some of my homework's were excellent. However the majority were rubbish!

SAME !!! a friend of my mother thaught me how to draw a portrait once and she said the same thing in other words. She said : "draw exactly what you see and not what your mind makes you see." that stuck with me not only for drawing but for many other areas. She explained to me how our mind has a tendency to deform reality based on what it "should" look like and based on us being conditionned by our environment. Fascinating.
@@shantil7764 I am psychotherapist, and start the therapy telling people that we usually don't react to reality, but to what it reminds us. This is the base of most "psychological" problems. In the environment there are a million stimuli, and our perceptual filter decides, what will come to the conscious mind. The filter has been being defined mainly by childhood conditioning, and traumatic experiences. The key here is awareness. Betty Edwards was a genius, when she applied awareness in drawing, and quit the meaning from the sight. I did the exercises in her book, and they were great psychology lessons, too. (And I can drow now quite well.)
When I first started drawing upside down, my friends thought I was doing it as a challenge lol. They didn’t realize that it actually made drawing more simple
You know when I got the book I had the original drawing right side up but drew it upsidedown. One of my best pics, IMHO. Try drawing your pic upsidedown with your non dominate hand, now that's a challenge. They say drawing like that leads to new neural pathways of creativity. I believe it.
In my job I need to put tags in flasks, once I had the necessity to put them upside down because a series were slight defective, at first it was weird and hard but then I realized I actually had better results when I did it that way, each edge aligned perfectly! Now I use the same technique with all the labels.
I absolutely need to apply it in my drawing exercises. The brain is weird.

I have a HELL of a time with face proportions. I don't practice drawing regularly. The best results I get is with the "accurate shapes" upside down method.
Drawing upside down was my high-school art class's 2nd or 3rd project. We also put the upside down picture into a grid.
This video changed my life a few months ago. I've embarked on the journey of drawling. Before this video I've never seen myself as an artist. I'm completely obsessed with it now. Thank you seriously
I learned to draw this way in 4 grade and from than on art journey started. This really helped me become a better artist. It really kickstarted my art journey, I am 45 and still draw, but not as often as I would like, but still enjoy it when I do.
I took a painting course during my graphic design education and "painting shapes not subjects" was the lesson that has resonated with me throughout my life.
I have been learning Adobe illustrator, I have noticed that you have to look at images as shapes to create them in illustrator.

Everything breaks down to geometric shapes of one kind or another. For a beginner learning how to draw these simple shapes is the best starting point.

I've done this a few times before, and even though it feels weird at first, it does actually work. I also learned that drawing out of the comfort zone and drawing what you're not used to, boosts creativity and learning, and helps improvement. Always sharpen the skill, and do not worry about the mistakes!

Humans fascinate me. For example, we make a mistake when drawing and immediately feel a need to thoroughly erase it as though other people will scoff at a mistake. If only we would erase a mistake made in our life as quickly as we erase a simple drawing mistake, how much better the world could be. And in painting, we try to cover up mistakes with additional paint or scraping. No, I believe we need to erase thoroughly and not cover up. We need to scrape and start again. I love how art naturally brings out philosophical and spiritual ideas in my mind. 😊
There is music out there called hemi-sync that captures the brain waves using music played at certain wave lengths. The brain harmonizes with the music then you can shift to the right side dominant songs and it really works. It's like playing a musical instrument, you get out of it what you put into it. Practice practice practice.

I’m a retired art teacher too. I used the book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” while teaching high schoolers and it worked especially well when they were drawing portraits! ❤ I also taught them about the right and left sides of the brain.
I remember this exercise in high school. We had an amazing teacher. She got us involved in many different art projects in our junior and senior year.
The best exercise i had in my life drawing class was the "blind contour" where you draw without looking at the paper and using only one line, not lifting your pen/pencil/etc from the paper. Definitely trained my eye to see the details of what i was drawing. I used it to teach my students and still use elements of it to draw.

I got taught that in first grade, and 45 years later i still draw my own hands, just for fun. I love the style.
That technique of drawing (one line not lifting your pencil, blindfolded) is called FRACTALS and can be used as a diagnostic procedure in some programs related to psychology. Once that you finish the picture, the task is to colour it folowing pretty strict rules (regarding the number of colours, the way these colours are combined...) You can investigate into it.
We did this in my seventh grade art class and it blew my mind. I still think about it a lot. And I am always flipping my digital and physical canvases and papers around. You can always spot things that need changing and fixing by doing this! It's amazing.
Many years ago I was given the opportunity to teach art classes to 6th graders. I had zero training in this area, but I loved drawing! After finding the Betty Edwards book, I asked my students do this exercise. They were given the Picasso sketch in the book of the man sitting in a chair with hands folded. They had already had a few lessons using the grid method, but when I showed them this sketch some were excited while others looked horrified. Then, when I told them they would be drawing the man upside down, ALL of them looked horrified! Every drawing turned out great. The hands were the only exception because their left brains were screaming at them to “just do those hands we’ve always done since we were 5-years-old”! This exercise is amazing. Each and every student gained the confidence they needed to move forward. Ok, so there was this one student that misunderstood my instructions. He dutifully turned the reference handout upside down. However, he then proceeded to draw the man in an upright position! Now THAT IS AMAZING!

I love this story, and especially the one student who misunderstood and yet managed to still draw the man the right way up despite the reference being upside-down haha that is funny, and what a clever boy, and a good reminder, as a teacher myself about how students each interpret what you say or teach through their own perspective!

Seeing this reminded me of art class in Jr. High School in the mid '80s. We did this exact exercise. I can remember the first time you could feel the struggle the left brain was having with the upside down picture. This brought back memories.
If I'm being honest, I never knew this technique existed until now. This really does change your life and the way you draw. I just used this technique to draw a random outline picture from the internet upside-down and it turned out exactly the same. Thank you for this drawing exercise:)

I have drawn almost my entire life. I've always been extremely passionate about art, but as I grew up I forgot about that passion somewhere along the way. I've recently rediscovered this passion and really taking art, my skills and techniques seriously to become the best I can be. This was extremely helpful and has me excited for the next time I draw. This exercise was like a light in a dark room for me when I was a teen. From there I even proceeded to collaborations with my best friend on large sheets of paper. She would draw/paint right side up and I would work upside down to meet her in the middle. It was a wonderful way to learn together. I still use this technique to study new subjects or when I need to iron out recurring mistakes on an all too familiar subject.

Something that changed the way I draw things when I'm looking at them is the awareness of negative space as well. Being aware of the space between lines and shapes is immensely helpful to get things in the right place and the right size.

I was fortunate to be able to take a weekend seminar given by one of the author's instructors. Going into that weekend I had NO expectations that I would see any improvement in my drawing abilities...but I was astounded by what was accomplished. That book is amazing. The exercise you demonstrated in this video is the one that I remember most from that weekend. So helpful!
Yep, this is 100% the “secret” to drawing. It really makes a huge difference.
Although in reduced impact to result...I consider the children that weren't taught cursive writing, as an example...using the alternate hand teaches the hemispheres to work in concert...like the grip in golf...hands have to work together, no matter what.

watching this has made me realize that i subconsciously do this when drawing or painting. i'll turn my head completely sideways and almost upside down and stare at my painting/drawing and the reference and compare lines and proportions and colors and it does help so much
I did this drawing exercise in high school and it's true, it's one of the best things I ever did to develop my drawing skills! My art teacher was a wonderful inspiration! I've used the same book in many of my own classrooms. Fantastic exercises.
That exercise changed my ability to draw accurately and I greatly appreciated the book by Edwards.
LOVE that book. Had it early '90s and the concept has stuck with me. I also studied 2 fine art classes around that time where we were instructed to draw what you see and that was expounded on. Learned to see differently. Good to have refresher.
So this is why my brain stops being noisy at times when I’m fully immersed in the art I’m making that actually comes out good!
I actually had to do something like that for one of my art projects in art class. I'll never forget. My art professor made us do a drawing of Hokosai's "Mad Poet" upside-down and to my surprise, I actually was able to pull it off. I still have that drawing and whenever I look at it I remind myself of how I was able to overcome that obstacle.
I remember going over that book in grade 11, from one of the finest art teachers ever. She was right! And so you are, as well. Great video!
I remember my first art class that I took in high school and had a project that my teacher assigned making us draw upside down. Was it difficult as a beginner? yes absolutely! But at the end of the year I looked at all of my pieces and was so astonished at how good it turned out.

ive been drawing for as long as I can remember, and still practice it professionally as well as casually. from graphite to charcoal to oils and water colors, i've been through it at one point or the other. i've also tutored some amazing individuals and I always explain how the brain wants you to draw something they way it remembers and not from the observation.
one way to counter this exact thing, and i've been doing that because its just a seamless integration into your drawing process. and thats to give more time in observing the subject rather than drawing. spent more time looking at the object and then putting a line or two to create the markers and landmarks of the right proportions and form.
but this here is another very amazing exercise that you can do directly to address this issue... and it may actually change your life. Good stuff
When I was a lot younger, I used to doodle a lot, and improved to larger ventures when received good feedback. When I did a lot of hand-drawing (now it's mostly photography with whatever skills are required to provide the message I want to convey with what I've (or I think that I've managed to convey)) I used to be able to look at the paper and see what sort of picture I wanted to 'pull' out of the two-dimensions of a sheet of paper. So, I am convinced that art, or at least visual art, is a measure of one's skill and ability to be able to see and translate to the medium what is 'seen in one's minds' eye'.
I read Betty’s book soon after it was written, and for the first time, I realized why I draw the way I do since I had never noticed! It made sense so that I could draw more intentionally and with more confidence… it changed my life, too!

I’ve been going through my things because I’m (hopefully 🤞🏻) moving this year and just came across my copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, how timely! I never did get around to reading it but I’m gonna start today.
My sixth grade art instructor had us do this one day & it totally changed my perspective after that. It has been one of the most helpful tools for me as an artist. If you are learning how to draw & have not tried this, it will be a game changer. I very often change the position of the picture I'm drawing to trick my brain into drawing what I'm seeing instead of what I think I'm seeing, not just upside down but also to each side... I have a poster with at least 6 faces on it, so when I'm drawing a face I can use that to kind of reset my brain back to what is vs what I think is...you can also hold your drawing up to a mirror to spot things you may have missed or to just see the drawing with a fresh perspective. If you are new to these methods try them out, I hope they will help you as much as they did me. 🙂
I used this book and the big lesson I learned was to ask: how does this line relate to that one, how does that value relate to that one. This stops you analysing and going into symbol mode (left brain) and stay in the relationship mode (right brain).

Great thing to teach.. my art teacher used to say take a step back or look at it in a new area or perspective. This kind of reminds me of that.. turning it around changing lightings going inside or outside or simply taking a step back to see the full picture can really help you as an artist and a person.. it brings out a whole different sight on the world and the creativity that is in front of you all at the same time. As a an artist I feel I become to focuses in certain areas I am draw that taking a step back helps me see everything instead of just a small part.
As someone who has dyslexia, this is how my brain works most, if not all of the time! It was really interesting hearing you explain how you have to trick your brain into seeing things so differently, when I struggle to do the opposite.

TBH, that's not how anybody's brain works. The left versus right brain thing was debunked a long time ago. If that were the case, you'd see people completely an utterly helpless after having half their brain removed. Obviously, losing that much brain is significant and does have lifelong complications, but you don't completely lose those "right" or "left" brain functions as a result.

@@SmallSpoonBrigade losing brain function? was this a reply to someone saying something about that? the og poster was saying their dyslexia throws off the usual and agreed upon ways written communication is shared among people, and noticed the video spoke about overriding THEIR (the dyslexia brain) natural brain functions via the exercise. it is true all humans who have it, predominantly creative or logical, use both sides of the brain all the time. but there is a difference with how... and which of the regions the two contrasting individuals will be operating. this arguement has been in constant analyzation for years. similar to the "bad chemicals in my food" arguement, not always meant to be taken literal when intentions and angles are the main focus. "I'm more right brained" is just colloquial. they dont want to bore someone with 3 paragraphs on why their left and right hemispheres arent working as the persons who didnt need to go to speech therapy, or the kid who passed algebra on the 1st try.. those are large examples. but other executive functioning issues can be less noticeable.

I am a self taught and I did discover this method, experiencing different perspectives of drawing by myself. While drawing using normal way, I did notice mistakes in my drawing but couldn't actually adjust it correctly. And using the upside down image, I was able to identify the actual spacing & lines.
This exact exercise from that book ("Drawing on the right side of the brain") was an absolute game changer in my own art! That book was my best yard sale find ever.

I remember doing this when I was in middle school. It was so much fun. And for the students that couldn't wrap their head around it just being lines, the teacher put a piece of paper over the reference and had them pull it down bit by bit as they worked, so they couldn't see the full drawing anymore and could focus on just the lines :D

When I taught 4th grade, the students were struggling to draw people, objects, and scenes for the books they were making and illustrating. I had them do this exercise with photos and drawings they found that represented what they wanted to show, and they were absolutely astounded at how wonderful their drawings came out. After that, every time a student wanted to draw something, they would either find a picture or take a photo themselves and use the "upside down" method to draw it.

I discovered this book 25 years ago and tried to do all the exercises in it. Sure taught me a lot about seeing. I still am benefitting from that book.
This taught me more that my art teacher has ever done. I’m homeschooled my my art teacher doesn’t organise any online lessons, it’s just a booklet of instructions. The work book also doesn’t list any of the materials that I need which makes it that much more frustrating
I've had the book for many years but never followed any of the exercises, apart from reading it once in a while as I find the text in it a little too technical. I was just looking for a step by step guide when I bought it. I think this exercise is a good starting point. Thank you for sharing.

I did this during my 1st illustration class 4yrs aga! It was absolutely amazing to me,I mean ,I could barely draw a human looking shape lol. I forgot all about it. Omg,as I get back into art,I've only been doing abstract because the idea is deeply rooted that I can't do representational art.....bet if I try this and train,that idea will disappear and be proved wrong. I had this book as a text book for my drawing subject. From memory the upside-down drawing for my exercise was Picasso's "Man in a Chair". I found it astounding that I could draw it well. It was certainly a game-changer for me. One of the classes recommended readings was your website. I subscribed for a while and found my drawing skills improved dramatically with your tutorials. This is a brilliant exercise. I did both examples in the book and the results were amazing. I also play some instrumental music in the background, no singing, just acoustic guitar. I love this! I first found this exercise in a college art class where we used Betty's book and it completely changed my feelings about drawing. I still use this exercise sometimes.

I had never drawn much in my life except for an art class in high school until about a year ago, I’m 41 now but I was in my second rehab for drugs after an overdose. Met another in recovery that was a true artist, so I watched him draw then I mimicked his work. After finishing a few I showed him and he was impressed but he showed me this technique too! "Deawing on the Right Side of the Brain" was the last Birthday present my mom gave me before she passed. Thanks to that precious gift, I have painted a few very realistic animal portraits and am eager to continue. I have left brain TBI so drawing the upside down knight on his horse was a lot of fun!
I am interested in designing and I always thought that designing is a skill that you either have or you don't, but now I know that it can be learned.
As a physicist, I object to the notion that mathematics only use the Left Hemisphere (LH), and not the Right Hemisphere (RH).
For standard mathematics, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, this might be true. It might be only centered in the LH, because it is standard.
But more advanced mathematics only become available through forms of thinking that are relate to the RH. Because there the problems are novel, and the RH is needed for that.
In addition, the LH-RH differences are quite subtle, and I would recommend reading two books that go into this quite extensively, written by Iain McGilchrist (The master and his emissary, The matter with things).
I had a very good teacher and he said that I have to separate everything I want to draw into shapes and lines, I think this is the best way for being an artist

I realized how amazing this technique is very randomly, on my own. Once I drew a reference photo of Lady Gaga, which was upside down (a scene from one of her music videos), and as I was drawing, it was so much easier to get the proportions right, than when a portrait is standing normally.

Wow!! I actually felt a shift while watching the lower feet or upper being done. I am definitely going to try this.
4:22 An art teacher i had in school who actually cared for his students taught me this way. This teacher would go through and teach many different ways and styles and would let everyone build a portfolio according to what they wanted. This teacher was incredible. A trick to help is to add a piece of paper on top of your reference and slowly move the paper down as you draw.
I have been painting since I was 13, and today I am 74. But lately I noticed how difficult it was becoming to paint someone with oil, I never had that problem, so definitely I am going to start this painting again upsidedown like you though us today. When I was young and studied spacial geometry at school, my father taught me to think of the object and visualise it in 3d, to rotate it and see how the lines change along with my perspective and how my drawing change. With a little practice I began doing it subconsciously, in my mind, not having the need to actually have the physical object in front of me. This made me visualise the space around me more analytically and see the geometry behind every object that I'm focusing on. This was the greatest exercise for me in reproducing shapes, and understanding more complex forms of drawing: such as how light influence the mood of a drawing, how different textures and shapes absorb light and so on.
Mr Squiggle was an Australian children's TV character who always drew his pictures upside down. Miss Jane didn't know what he had drawn until she put it right way up. Then as kids, the game was to figure it out before Miss Jane
My art teacher did this with our class when I was around 10 years old, such a smart idea/exercise!
I read this book almost 20 years ago. Drawing upside down really works. The drawing I did upside down, did look closer to the picture, than the one I did right side up. Interestingly, I drew more accurate details that matched the pictures, because I was drawing only what I saw, amazing. In the book I drew the example of an armoured knight on a horse, and a well known person sitting in a chair with he’s knees crossed. It was someone like Eisenstein, or Mark Twain. The resemblance was surprisingly accurate. My book is packed away, along with the practice drawings. Unfortunately, they are out of state, but I’m going to dig them out next trip. Yes, the premise of the book, does work.

It took me a while to learn that if you put enough focus and are aware of the lines you're making, you can create the image in your head, but sometimes I still have trouble with focus and favor speed/familiarity but my drawings end up not quite how I want them.

Thank you. I always say, how can someone, me, have such a deep deep desire to be able to draw but yet have no ability.. This upside down exercise, wow. I was rushing but even so, there's hope for me. :)
I do this when doing portraits, when I just can't get it looking the way I want. I turn my reference photo and the painting upside down and sure enough I see the area that just wasn't right....helpful indeed. I also take a picture with my phone, of the piece I am working on, take a break from the work, then look at the pic on my phone and see areas that need some attention.
this is very interesting.. my father in law is a retired art professor and he still paints nearly every day and i often catch him painting upside down..makes a lot of sense!!
I've used this practice by photographing a place I like, turning over the image and drawing the lines and shapes.

You are my chosen teacher, but I just haven't gotten the time cleared yet to know that I will be able to commit to actually doing the course in a reasonable amount of time. I am learning so much from you. (yes, I admit I listen and watch several other videos by different artists. You, however, make the most sense.) Your partner on the sketchy videos is a good teacher also. I will be 74 soon, and I am a true beginner with a ton of desire to learn as much as I can.

@@ChrisKienke I want to ask you if you ever made Jesus your lord and your savior have you ever thought about turning to God? God loves you and wants you to come to him and he will give you salvation for free you cannot earn your way to heaven its a gift that you take from God through Jesus. Did you know that God is our Judge and even though He doesn't want anyone to go to hell alot will go there because they will try to earn there way into heaven God is our Judge and Jesus is our savior from the sins we committed. Since God's our Judge everyone will be in front of God on Judgement day some will be with Jesus and go into heaven and others God will send into Hell. This is why alot will go into He'll because they trust in there heart that there a Good person and they think that if they change there bad ways than they won't Go to Hell but since God's a Good Judge he cannot let sin be unpunished. that's like you on earth killing someone and then telling the judge you won't do it again! So don't put me in prison! That won't work. The only thing that will save you is if someone paid your fines and the judge can Justly and rightly let you out because someone paid for your fines. Jesus paid for our sins on the cross and he took the punishment of our sins on himself because He loves us he chose to die for you in hopes that you will turn to him because he knows that nothing will save you from Hell except Him except His work on the Cross. If you want to be saved tell God that you make Jesus your lord and your savior and agree and rest in that Jesus died for you and on the third day God raised Jesus from the dead Agree and rest in Jesus

Thank you. This has never occurred to me before and I can totally see much easier it is to break up shapes because normally it is difficult to not associate with the overall picture.
The Betty Edwards book is awesome. Admittedly I find myself drawing some things upside down absent mindedly to get certain bits of shading correctly, when my reference is a flat photo or something. It just sticks into your unconscious after a couple times doing the exercise.
