As a person of color, I have so much love and respect for you speaking out about how disappointing the lack of deeper skin tones in the set is. The fact that you noticed it, were bothered by it, and chose to say something about the lack of inclusivity is a beautiful example of what it means to be an ally! Regardless of whether you were speaking from an artist standpoint or an ethical one, I appreciate it!

    • @yorutsumetai

Dont care how it's been spelled you obviously understood the comment. Having said that, yes, I too thought it showed wonderful awareness that skin tones in this set of pastels are definitely limited. It's about time that more companies recognize the diversity existing in skin tones.

Sir Havin I hear you. In my opinion, there is a major difference between being a “decent person” & being an ally aka a person who really helps/protects/supports others aka a person who wants to be more than decent.

Very imformative and helpful! I'm trying out different mediums to see which I favor and which will help me improve my mixed media hobby. I basically sketch portraits then use them in mixed media projects and thought pan pastels would be easiest and most efficient for coloring faces. I wasn't too excited about the color selection for portraits so I went to Dick Blicks and ordered them individually. I picked most of the colors from the portrait set and then added custom colors I thought I might find useful. They will arrive before Christmas and excited to give them a try. Thank you so much for your input and beatiful impression of an eye. You are a fabulous artist and I am greatful for you sharing your talent with us. I couldn't grow my interests without generous people like you.

I adore my pan pastels! I have almost the complete set from adding them to my collection over the years. There is a 10 and 20 pan plastic snap-in palette for them (I have 3 of the 20 pan palettes filled and need another one for the mediums!). I usually use them for my background layers, then go over with stick pastels or go right over them with acrylics and mixed media. Thanks for a great video! I do abstract work, so it was "eye opening" 😁 to watch your process. 🎨😍

Pan pastels are my absolute fave! I’ve used them for 4 years and I love them so much, they are the perfect base. I only have a set of 10 and I haven’t had to replace any pans yet. I draw a lot of people with dark skin and they have two browns that work amazingly for the base. It is a shame they didn't include darker colours in this portrait set though - we're always an afterthought. One big tip is to use fixative/hairspray before you layer with colour pencils.

I've had the entire set for a few years now. The full set has lids for each individual color. I don't like the sponge tools they include, so I use tools made for chalk pastels. I find they last longer. If you get the blenders, course/fine, black/white, it adds more variety to what you can do.

Thank you for using & reviewing pan pastels. I have a a fair number of pans.. I have used them as base layer for my encaustic work. Beeswax & mixed media art . I had not tried mixing the pan pastels with coloured pencils. I will now! Seeing that the two work perfectly together. Your eye study is incredible. Pro: pan pastels last a long time, Colors blend very easily, Con : pan pastels are quite expensive, supplied applicator sponges wear out quickly,. hint: dollar store cosmetic wedges are low price and last much longer. Cotton swabs work well for fine detail. Great tutorial! Looking forward to seeing more of your work. I am a new subscriber.👩‍🎨

I have been using them for the past five years I find them a fun medium. Recently I found knives and covers and combo packs which I will be checking out soon. I really enjoy working with PANPASTELS a lot. I been using the landscape colors and basic colors. My biggest problem is cleaning the pads and making sure the pads fits the knives I have couple of pads that doesn't fit the knives included in box. I like using pastels pencils for fine details,I trying your and trying colored pencils. Be safe, strong and healthy. AND KEEP YOUR PENCILS SHARPENED AND YOUR BRUSHES WET.

I've used Pan Pastels and I love them. For me they're easy to work with. I practiced with a landscape and a portrait with the flesh tone set. Both worked well for me.

Hi Kirsty, a few weeks back I was on the phone to my kid brother who's into his art and his solution for black was some kiwi shoe polish. Now, I have never used pan pastels but watching your vid I imagine it'd work relatively well.

Great video. I have never seen pan pastels in action before and this was very informative. I just got a set of oil pastels...maybe I should have bought pan pastels. I too have been frustrated with how long things take with coloured pencil. Thank you for posting.

I have this set - managed to buy it when it was on sale so much cheaper. Have since bought a black and the pan holders to put them in instead of unscrewing them all to find a colour. Also got the blending pastel to help with blending. Still learning how to use them properly but love them. Just need more colours! I can’t mix the colours I want very well - maybe one day in future I’ll get more...

I have just started using pan pastel and I find them incredible, smooth, an excellent pigment, and although expensive I think they will last a lot longer than pastel sticks.
