    If you love these watercolor pencils. I highly recommend Faber Castells Albrect Durer watercolor pencils. Also, for mind blowing color saturation, Faber Castell now has Albrecht Dürer Magnus Watercolor Pencils. They have a 5.3 mm core for laying down large washes and the saturation is even more intense than the regular WC pencils.

    These Derwent pencils get a lot of negative press in the colouring world. I've often wondered why because I love Derwent artists pencils (but not in most colouring books) but they too get bad press. You have increased my confidence to try these watercolour pencils out. I just love the shades. So very natural. Ideal for landscapes. Having watched you, I think they get bad press from colourists because they don't realise that they can, and should, layer. They tend to pile it all in at once and then wet it and get disappointed and then end up raving about the bright, vivid (but not that natural looking) brands.

    I use the Faber Castell watercolor pencils usually. I have found that using water soluble graphite leaves a grainy look even when you layer over it. I use a very light cool grey watercolor pencil for my outlines and layout. It works much better to me.

    Great video! You may find that water brushes become your first choice in brushes for this medium. I haven't tried them, but Arteza makes a thicker water brush. The Silver brand "Black Velvet" type brushes work really well for these if you want a bigger brush since they hold a lot of water but they won't break the bank like a squirrel hair mop will. These have almost soapy pigment that sometimes needs to be pushed around, so a firmer bristle brush is easier to control.
    Also, you might find that you prefer using these on cold press paper, particularly when you have a subject that requires deeper colors since Arches, at least, allows you to get some really rich looking, deep colors. My biggest problem with these is that I normally work from live models and I need to stop and wait for my layers to dry. The Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelles are completely lightfast, but super expensive and really, except for a few colors, no better than these. The Inktense work in connection with these really well, especially for the first layers.

    Glad you found a good new medium to use that is available open stock! I’ll put these on my list to get someday! Great review and tutorial. Also this is a really beautiful piece! I also prefer takalon brushes with watercolours unless I’m doing very loose techniques.

    I love watercolor pencils! I bought an inexpensive but well reviewed by Marty over at Owings Atr- Fantasia, made in Indonesia, I think- anyway, I have been seriously reading reviews and watching demos and scouring Amazon for the next best set. I almost caved for the Faber Castell 36 set. I gulped and said look a little more before spending that much. I hope I will enjoy the Arteza 72 set as well for now. Your painting turned out beautifully and showed me a lot about layering. Thank you!

  • @seahorse5689

    Super helpful video. Now understand why I've hesitated using my watercolor pencils as I didn't like the unblendable pencil strokes. Now realize I was pressing too hard to get a more saturated layer of pigment before hitting it with the water. T.Y. BTW, I LOVE the Caran D'Ache Museum Aquarelle watercolor pencils, but they're pretty pricey.

    The intro with Chicken walking across the table is really cute. Also, the lion fish looks amazing with the blues that you added in. I don’t have watercolor pencils but watching this makes me want to buy them.

    I do like the Caran D’Ache Supracolor a lot I have an 18-color set along with some open stock colors-‘wish I had bought a bigger set. They get a sharp point and blend well, and are more transparent than the Albrecht Durer pencils, although I like those a lot.

    Not knowing which watercolor pencil brand to go with, I got some Derwent, Caran D'ache M/A, and Faber-Castel A/D. I assumed I would like the Caran D'Ache the best. But honestly I prefer the Faber-Castel because it seems to activate smoother and completely. Most of the Caran D'Ache do as well...Not all. The Derwent came in third as far as activating all the pigment. Of course it could just be me. Still, I'm thankful to have and enjoy all of them.

    Nice video, enjoyed the whole workflow.
    I have both tins of watercolor and inktense and I wonder how would be the best approach to mix them together and achieve the best result possible.
    I guess that would somehow interesting if you make some video approaching both medias working together, and maybe also using some nice watercolor together.
    I guess it would speed even more the process once you can set the background even faster. And also because I have a good amount of Talens Ecoline here (liquid watercolors), and even though I'm not a realism guy, I really enjoy and learn a lot with your videos.

      Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle are expensive but they are very premium. Would love to see you try them on, the end result will be amazing!!!

    I used watercolor pencils years ago, like when I was a kid, but your videos with them are making me want to pick them up again. Also, "...then I send spam every week" Lol. Seriously, though, I see a lot of the big youtubers, (the ones with millions of subscribers)that I follow on Twitter, complaining that youtube isn't sending their videos to their subscribers, but it looks like hardly any of these people have email lists or if they do, they're not using them.

    Gorgeous! I see now, these are more transparent then the Museum Aquarelle's, aren't they. You might have fun looking at the Daniel Smith website. Each of their paint colors are rated by level of transparency (open=fully transparent and closed=fully opaque), staining (ie. ability to lift paint off) light fastness, granularity/granulation (ie. small granules that do not dissolve when you paint with the color). Now I have an even better answer to my question! The Faber Castelle Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils must be more transparent, like the Derwents. And as you said, the Museum Aquarelles are "more opaque." Phew. Hmmm....I totally had my heart set on the Aquarelles (maybe the marketing got to me with the term "Museum" in the name!) but I really love watercolor because of the transparent quality of the colors, so I am thinking I will like the Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils more! Lisa, I think you could use a $12 pencil set and turn it into a museum quality painting! Thank you so so much!

    I love your work! Thank you so much. I am not the guy who goes around the internet correcting people but it is blowing my mind that so many have commented on the "chicken" in the intro! Lmao! Has no one ever seen a small parrot before (parakeet, cockatiel, etc)?

      @@JA-ed1tj inktense are ideal for layering as they are transparent and once a layer is fully dry, it won't reactivate.

    Great video Lisa! 😁 I'm glad you found another media you are loving. 😉 I have the Faber castell AD which are the same colors as the polychromos. I would love to get the Caran d'ache museum wc pencils. I have their supracolor ones, but I can't find any lightfast info on those.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  Před 6 lety +3

      Here are some pins with the supracolor lightfast info. www.pinterest.com/lachriart/lightfast-info-for-caran-dache-supracolor-pencils/ I hate that Caran d'Ache is using their 3 star rating on these because they don't give you much info on what those stars translate to. Their website is terrible about giving clear information, but I found one of their brochures online that says they are rated with ASTM, but zero info on what the three stars equate to as far as ASTM numbers. I will contact them, but they have given so much misinformation and contradicting information to artists on other topics through email that I don't know if I would totally believe whoever is in charge of their email accounts.

    Beautiful painting, Lisa! You didn’t put a link for the Taklon bristle brushes you were using. What is the brand, and where might I find them? I’ve looked on several sites, but they aren’t bristle just watercolor.

    Love all the purples and blues and how vibrant all the colors are! I just got my Polycromos so this set will have to wait but will be ordering at least some white from this line.
    Would you do a piece with the Inktense and the Derwent watercolors? I am sure that will be amazing.

    im just pointing out, it would be easier to get your highlights with masking fluid rather than the white pencil because it keeps more defined edges and will be a brighter white

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  Před 6 lety +2

      Masking fluid doesn't play nicely with this specific paper, unfortunately >

    Lisa that painting is simply gorgeous unless someone was told they'd probably never guess it was done in pencil. Can I be so bold and ask what cost, at your level of art experience, would you charge for that piece? I'm only asking because I'm still unsure about charging for quality coloured pencil art especially if its not completely lightfast. Also how many of the pencils used were rated higher for lightfastness?
