I will admit I was very surprised about the world of DXD. Just the fact all the pantheons are in it and etc was nice.
Story is not bad either.
This is why DxD is still my favorite anime. Still waiting on season 5 😅
I wish the whole 'devil' part was a lot more flushed out.
Like Issei died and transformed into a devil (pawn) but he never does anything. He only uses his dragon powers.
@@ceshmate1953 agreed. Specially since devils are all about desires. So would have been nice to see him combine the desire of a dragon with the desire of a devil.
Or just have a funny moment ware his devil side was stronger for a while.
Power scaling is questionable
I'm surprised To Love Ru wasn't up there 😂
Glad Joey mentioned Elfen Lied. Oh, and K-On! is a 7 Wonder anime. The peak of music anime.
Yeah, To Love Ru is _the_ ecchi anime that created a whole generation of degenerates
The peak of having tea maybe.
@@hundvd_7I can vouch for that. My first exposure to to love ru was the anime but the subtitles were in Spanish. Luckily I had a very tiny grasp on the Spanish language.
The peak of music anime is Beck. Closely followed by On-gaku.
Yeah, I thought the same lol
I think in the future TT should do one of two things. Each member make their own 7 wonders or they go around asking 7 friends to add an anime of their choice to the list.
That second one could get pretty wild
BRO COOKIN' 🍳
If we are talking about influential anime, there's Ashita no Joe, SAO (controversial but you can't deny it pretty much kicked off isekai subgenre), Space Battleship Yamato (or Star Blazers) as it literally introduced anime to the West. Urusei Yatsura and Astro Boy for...well. the root of modern anime tropes...
.Hack and Digimon did isekai before SAO, and the genre has existed in the west for decades: Alice in wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Army of darkness, The chronicles of Narnia, Last action hero, Tron, The neverending story, Labyrinth, and a long etc
@@AvoCamilonah the Isekai fucking explode after Sao it's like every season there will be Isekai somehow
@@AvoCamilo.Hack and Digimon are isekai and indeed other examples you have listed also qualify, however, it is SAO that more or less popularized the term and brought about the wave of other isekai works in its wake. Much like how fables and fantasy have been a staple of our history; but it is Tolkien who is called the Father of Fantasy.
@@AnakinSkyobiliviator The use of the word "isekai" is a modern thing, yeh, but we've been watching the genre for decades, and it's always been popular, we just didn't give it a name before. Technically, we've all grown up on western isekais
@@AvoCamilo I guess it comes down to the realization of the subgenre existing instead of the new world of the story just being treated as a setting?
I feel like toradora was the introduction to romance for a lot of people for whatever reason.
It gets points for groundbreaking and setting a standard, but having set the standard has been probably surpassed by Kaguya-Sama in the years since. Purely subjective, of course, but Kaguya’s icy sarcasm is a bit more entertaining than Taiga’s violence outbursts.
I also rate Insomniacs After School as one of my top top anime, but might not be to everyone’s taste because of the lack of what Gigguk calls “anime bullshit,” and was over far too quick, at least in comparison to a marathon like From Me To You (which still didn’t have a satisfying resolution after all that time).
@@entropybentwhistle -It gets points for groundbreaking and setting a standard
It did? What standards?
Toradora! made me from anime hater to a full-on weeb. It also made me have an existential crisis/depression for 2 weeks straight. So yeah, it's high up there.
@@Jepze158i guess not being fanservice-filled with a believable romance, and without those stupid "WhAt iS tHiS wArM fEeLiNg iN mY cHesT?" moments every 3 minutes.
Toradora and Chuunibyou
I'm going in blind in DxD just for the tities, yet it surprised me with how good the story is 😂
While I would never under no circumstance dare imply that death note was not a big deal for the anime industry, haruhi while being less popular was highly influential on multiple aspects for all of anime.
1. Haruhi popularised or even dare i say started the moe trend.
2. Haruhi changed how people in japan view voice actors/voice acting, they started becoming more like superstars after haruhi.
3. Haruhi was one of the first anime that was adapted from a light novel that popped off, not manga or visual novel. All you isekai lovers, hell even bakemonogatari fans probably need to thank haruhi for that.
4. Music performances in anime now, all influenced by haruhi's god knows, that means all your bocchis your k-ons. Not to mention dance performances in your ops and eds, yeah thats all haruhi baybee...
Btw these are all just my opinions, i havent even watched the full podcast yet so im unsure if any of these aspects have even been discussed in the episode itself so apologies in advance haha
Azumanga Daioh was so ahead of its time when it came out. THAT was the catalyst for the slice of life genre.
DxD and HotD are slobs of radioactive sewage tbh though.
I think it’s funny back in my early teen years (14) I meant to watch high school of the dead but the “Crunchyroll 🏴☠️” I was using at the time had 3 high school anime’s with D and the way it cut off both its title and shortened it I couldn’t remember which one was high school of the dead so I just chose the one that had the red head on its cover and found out fast this was not high school of the dead but after 3 min in when the shower scene came in I didn’t mind staying. Too say the least I binged all three seasons at the time
So yes I am one of the genuine few who watched high school dxd on accident but 100% still a degenerate
Lupin the 3rd is way too underappreciated for how much it influenced even other medias outside of anime.
Lupin III is one of my favorites.
Spirited Away I believe was for the longest time the most watch anime movie.
In the romance/slice of life we could put maybe Nana, since it was highly influential for people in the 2000s, because it was very different from the usual style and story.
I see Rias in the thumbnail I click. But in all seriousness, I put DxD over HOTD. The ecchi is better (in my opinion at least) and the story is better (despite how much I like zombies). There is a reason even after 10 years Highschool DxD is still my favorite anime and I am still waiting for season 5
The hopium for season 5 in general anime fans is unreal MAN
Everyone is wishing for it
if dxd is your favorite anime u need to be watching better anime bro
😭
@@vaibhavh599 it doesn't matter if I watch "better" anime. DxD will still be my favorite and I have seen anime that many would consider better than DxD but I don't care
@@marcorodriguez8792 Damn. U got a girlfriend bro?
K-On was huge but come on, Lucky Star. It did it first and was popular.
And as I see it, Haruhi is like Avatar movie. It was highly influential for a time and then no one talks about it at all.
I feel like for Drama, Welcome to the NHK is the pick. A really good series about social isolation in general just with the premise of exploring anime culture.
Magic girl-Sailor Moon
Thriller horror-Death Note
Rom com-Fruits Basket
Movie-Akira
Slice of life?-Haruhi Suzumiya
Iseki-Sword Art Online
Sports-Free
Rosario + Vampire was the reason i started my ecchi anime phase
Same lmao
The Manga actually becomes a pretty good Shonen about halfway through. I wish it had a continuation that the author set up for then just didn't make.
I love how it didnt even take a full minute for HOTD to be mentioned
Death Note should have made it into the 7, as it brought in people that weren’t into anime. Gloated show that brought in alot of new viewers
Death Note was the anime that my friend suggested me to watch in high school and it changed everything to me. I watched DBZ when i was kid that was my first anime but years past by and i was like a lot of you "No i don't want to watch Japanese cartoon, not for me". Then i give it a try because i love mystery movies more then anything and to this day didn't watch better thing maybe "Monster" is up there. Now i watched like 300 Animes after that and im proud to say Death Note was the one that got me in this anime world. So maybe it is normie but it influenced me..
Facts
i didnt see he rest of the list discussion but i must say i was SHOCKED to not see Haruhi in that list reveal.
Haruhi was way more famous in japan but deathnote really popped iff in the west
If the criteria is how influential it was to viewers, then death note, but it sounds like they were talking about what was more influential to the industry and what kinds of shows got made, in which case haruhi was waaay more influential. What new genres or tropes did death note introduce that really caught on?
I agree with this list, but I'm honestly surprised that Fist of the North Star wasn't mentioned.
Death Note was the anime that my friend suggested me to watch in high school and it changed everything to me. I watched DBZ when i was kid that was my first anime but years past by and i was like a lot of you "No i don't want to watch Japanese cartoon, not for me". Now i watched like 300 Animes after that and im proud to say Death Note was the one that got me in this anime world. So maybe it is normie but it influenced me..
I was influenced by Haruhi more than Death Note even though I watched both in the beginning of my Anime journey. Especially, Disappearance Just did wonders.
I have never heard of haruhi before this video and i probably will never hear of it again and no one i ever have known has ever heard of it either. Obviously it probably had some impact on the industry but its slot isnt compatible with death note. It should probably replace gundam or dragon ball, since both also have the same role of defining a genre and changing the internal anime landscape. Garnt and Joey are like old-heads in basketball, they're not wrong but they only consider their generation.
@@nickygian The Haruhi Anime is only ~5-6 months older than the Deathnote Anime, and the Haruhi Movie released 3-4 years after deathnote finished. It's a key landmark in the slice of life genre, and is pretty much the epitome of mid-early 2000s anime.
Anyone who's ever looked through the history of anime as a whole has run into Haruhi. It may not have aged with the Shounen Jump & Isekai meta, but it was incredibly influential when it was airing and you can see the run on effects in how we adapt media to this day.
Deathnote is definitely one of the best introductory shows in Anime history, but it didn't really shake up the game and it certainly wasn't the first or last good show from the shounen jump catalog. If anything, I'd say it should be fighting with another shounen jump style show for the spot rather than Haruhi.
As far as them being old-heads, I'd have to counter with the fact that we simply cannot fairly evaluate shows which haven't had a chance to leave a long lasting mark yet. Haruhi and Deathnote both finished over a decade ago, and the Effects of both are fairly easy to observe and compare against eachother. We can go ahead and make assumptions about the most popular shows from the last 5 years, but we won't be able to judge them on the same level as older shows until we can step back and look at everything that comes after them.
Believe me, there are newer shows that I'd love to hold up and praise as generation defining masterpieces, but IDK how they'll be looked at in another 5-10 years.
@@tk03_85 Still feels redundant since gundam and dragon ball had the same reasoning behind their addition too. If it were a "7 anime that influenced me" list I wouldn't mind it but I think Death Note fills the niche of "made anime more accessible to the rest of the world" and that deserves a spot on the list than another "hallmark of the genre". You can argue the influence of both for ages but I think Haruhi's spot has been filled.
@@nickygian I think the issue with a show that simply made anime "more accessible to the rest of the world" is that there are so many other shows that have done that same thing to a similar degree. Attack on Titan, Naruto, One Piece, DBZ, MHA, Demon Slayer, Sailor Moon, etc. All those shows have been instrumental in bringing Anime to the west, and I think we just come back to the argument of "this show influenced me more" or "this show was more popular" with any of those options, and it'd be odd to fill the list with shows from just that list.
My argument for Haruhi is that it actually shifted the internal landscape of the anime industry. It gave us celebrity Voice Actors, the first BIG hit from KyoAni, A viral dance, and popular light novel adaptations. In addition to that, it would also be a unique genre on the list. If you wanted to go into Cosplay and convention culture, there's that too, but I don't find that nearly as important aside from showing the relative popularity at the time.
I don't see why Haruhi should have to fight with DBZ, AoT, Sailor Moon and Death note for a spot. Especially when all four of those could use the exact same arguments for being there. I think death note is a fine addition on it's own, but I think Haruhi more than deserves it's own spot on the list. I think Death Note should have to fight against the other introductory / gateway anime, rather than against a show that is there because of how it changed the workings of the industry as a whole.
The structure of the list doesn't work very well for this, but oh well.
Never heard of haruhi before this video lol
Death note is definitely more influential than Haruhi.
Its cos of death notes millions of new anime fan are born every 2 years. I myself was completely brought in to the world of anime cos i watched death note in Netflix.
Dragon ball and Pokemon were just another cartoon for us as kids, death note was the first “anime” that we all watched in west
This clip made me remember a review of forneverworld where he complained a special beach episode of Highschool of the Dead had too much fanservise.
A Ghibli film should have been on that list. Only anime with an Oscar.
Thank you Joey and Garnt, Haruhi the GOAT
Also surprised Spirited Away or Totoro weren't in the big 7.
It was either Spirited Away or Akira
eva, death note, code geass, gurren lagan, bebop, nichijou, fullmetal a
Kaguya sama?
Talking about the OG harem what about Tenchi? Also Akira is such a animeboomer take but also no Astro boy or any Clamp or Rumiko Takahashi. I mean Lum was one of the og waifus.
Not having Full Metal up here is a crime
2:19 Yeah, my mom actually caught me watching it... OVA beach episode as well
for me, the original harem anime is Saber Marionette
Feel like Connor was greatly underestimating Haruhi's impact
most anime fans who were not "that into" anime are not big on Haruhi. Deathnote has more mass appeal.
Yeah it had such a huge effect on anime and despite not being a fan of it or it’s offsprings it’s undeniable
@@spicykaraage641Haruhi proved that mass market 2.5D seiyuu idols in the internet era could work though, as well as bringing KyoAni to mainstream attention and kicking off the boom of making light novel adaptations into anime.
Sure, Hirano Aya crashed and burned, but without her, a bunch of the more popular female seiyuu would not have as much of a following right now and light novels would not be getting the attention that they are now.
@@GDIGhostStalker That kinda proves my point as people who are not "that into" anime would not know/notice or care about that stuff.
@@spicykaraage641that’s fair. I guess the whole thing they were talking about wrt “normie anime” definitely applies.
Looking at an overall industry impact though, Haruhi definitely had a bigger influence.
Ghost in the Shell is a founding father of modern cyberpunk, it should have been in there
There were earlier cyberpunk, but yeah it's a foregone inclusion. 12 wonders would have been more fitting, and include one rep for Ghibli too
@@shawnatlast I'm aware that GitS isn't the first, but its influence is undeniable. An anime that has as much influence in a genre as Blade Runner is not something you see everyday
@@Jizukiru Yeah of course. It's a default inclusion
I don't care but Highschool DxD is peak harem
Agreed
Agreed
Fix a girls life problem and she's deeply in love with you and is prepared to 'share' you with others.
Peak harem, yeh.
Based
Exactly
July 2006 was lit
Monogatari is something else. It is so good but I won't really recommend it to people with less watched anime
In regards to Death Parade (I haven't seen it), shouldn't that be on the list by Garnt's definition?
If you ask 3 people to give you a top 3 list of books to recommend and person 1 says 1) LotR; 2) The Witcher; 3) HP. Person 2 says 1) Dune; 2) Mistborn; 3) HP. And person 3 says 1) WoT; 2) GoT; 3) HP. Which do you go and read? It'll be Harry Potter.
Theres allot about gintama i dont get because of references but i know what the shw ia going for and I love that gintama is the final boss of good titles because you need to kbow te reference to appropriate the execution
Death Parade was one of three anime that I found at what I can only describe as a time in my life when I needed it most. So to the boys' statement about it, I offer a hearty "We know but, hey!!!"
Dude the two episodes about the detective and other guy are one of the best episodes in any anime I've seen.
Also Princess Knight has had a huge influence not only in shojo but yuri and queer anime in general
I hate how they said horror wasn't that influential and I am here screaming, Higurashi.
How is that influential?
@@Jepze158 It does for visual novels what Harhui did for light novels. And its still being talked about even to this day.
Disappointed no one mentioned Tenchi. Granted, this is for most influential, so I'm sure I'm not 100% understanding their personal criteria. But I feel like Tenchi was super influential in the romance/harem space.
Harem as a genre to me has 3 specific anime I point to as giant influences for the genre.
Tenchi Muhyo: nailed down the key points of the genre
Love Hina: popularized the genre and is what most people point to for starting the 2000s harem boom. Unfortunately pretty much everything terrible about the genre came from this one
Highschool DxD: pushed the boundaries for how much you can really get away with in the genre, and what I point to for being the influence to other really degenerate shit outside of harem as well.
Haruhi way to go !! 🎉
If your gonna go to bat for a harem ecchi the there should be a good reverse-harem shoujo on their radar. I nominate Fruits Basket.
Nanoha 🙂
oh, And every incel ever needs to see Welcome to the NHK because it may shock them out of it.
They already have Sailor Moon in their list. Putting Nanoha is redundant.
bruh, the thumbnail is wild 💀💀💀
As if a ghibli hasn’t been put up there
7 was used for obvious reasons but 12 wonders would have been more fitting, and more comprehensive
that's a good number. my attempt at a list would be: Dragon Ball, Mobile Suit Gundam, Evangelion, Sailor Moon, Akira, Attack on Titan, Death Note, Haruhi Suzumiya, Rurouni Kenshin??, Cowboy Bebop, Ashita no Joe
no romance or horror 'cause I haven't seen that much and not sure what I would place
Yosuga no Sora?
OG King of Harems is Tenchi Muyo
Yosuga no Sora should be on the list.
as much as i love dxd light novel, i would have put high school of the dead.
the combination of dead and haruhi's light novel adaptation gave birth to DxD
captain tsubasa?
Ghost in the Shell? ... Anyone?
...
Oh, one better... Space Battleship Yamato.
Maybe because i'm italian, but i think a influential anime i Captain Tsubasa, it brings a whole generation to became football players, such as Del Piero and Nakata.
Also it helped to make famous soccer in Japan, and to host the (infamous) 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea
In influential wise it is the top sports anime since it
Is the only anime who introduced power of friendship and teamwork for the first time in 80's and the inspiration u can see in every sports anime
The only sports anime that can rival tsubasa in terms of influential is
Ashita no joe
Bro, not just in Italy! It's also influential in most of Asia, Africa, and Latin America's countries.
My goodness that thumbnail
Joey, can you add Fam Mart socks to your clothing line
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
I think the reason death note was brought up there is because it added a lot of new anime watchers globally but if you think about it, that's also the reason AOT is there and I think AOT had the bigger impact. Meanwhile Haruhi changed the formula for slice of life animes, a formula which is still used up to this day and age. I think it does deserve it more than death note and even then I'd probably put K-on above death note. Cute anime girls are still meta because of them.
To love Ru & Tenjou Tenge
The best thing about Death Note is that it never gets old. Like right now I am not watching One Piece or Naruto, but I can watch Death Note.
My first ecchi was B Gata H Kei. At the time I didn't even speak English I was so young I wasn't supposed to watch that show. But I did because it was on CZcams! Anyway after that I watched Sora No Otoshimono (or Heaven's Lost Property) and I liked Nymph. My taste in anime girls was small boobs/cute body thanks to that show. Then I watched To Love Ru but not the first one the second one and the Darkness one. Nana was really hot. (Again, small boobs.) My mind got twisted into liking lolis and I am a victim of the weeb culture and the internet.
One of the first anime i watched was jojo and that scene with lisa lisa awakened something in me. When i later watched my first ecchi which was dxd my tastes were reinforced. (Akeno was my favorite). I was now into hot older girls especially hot older girls with big boobs. Then i watched akame ga kill and Esdeath was by far the best girl in that show. Now i just wasnt into hot older girls with big boobs but strong dominant hot older girls with big boobs. With time i somehow started caring less about boobs and finding myself liking thighs more. Yeah, my tastes are basically the opposite of yours.
Manga ending was awkward and wholesome at the same time
That school nurse from HOTD😏👌
You unlocked a core memory
Boys missed the Eurobeat
influential in a genre SAO should be on it , it kicked of isekai animes. also have never heard of haruhi
7 wonder of anime (my list) :
-sailor moon
-dragon ball
-naruto
-doraemon
-samurai x
-aot
-captain tsubasa
my reason pretty simple. if even my anime-hating mom know them, just goes to show how popular they are xD
More like the official 7 Boomers of anime
アタックNo.1, Atakku No. 1
I Love HARUHI suzumiya she’s number 1 for me
Gintama has an extremely slow start but once it gets good it stays good. But I do understand why people wouldn't want to wait that long.
It takes it's time to familiarize the viewer with the many many different characters and their traits. After that's established it's kind of like a western show with a main cast and revolving guests every week in between big serious arcs and comedic arcs.
For romance tenchi muyo, urusai yatsura, inuyasha. Any of those would fit
Also Boys Over Flowers
Inuyasha for sure
what about Claymore, often forgotten but I think it could make the list.
Was rezero mentioned ever? I feel like that one doesn't leave me alone.
I agree with Haruhi and also I know that it's not mainly about how good it is but Haruhi I think is consistently good not as good as the incredibleness that is the first half of death note not even disappearance but it is consistently good whereas ya death notes first half is incredible and is why it's so beloved it's second half is just meh for me personally I would put Toradora on the list because it changed my view on romance media forever and just anime in general I've watched and read plenty more series that are better than Toradora however it's why I stopped only watching battle Shonen literally my three favourite anime of all time I would not have watched if I had not watched Toradora because they aren't battle Shonen aka in this order from first to third favorites are Assassination classroom, Angel beats and Kokoro connect (I also think that Madoka magica is an honorable mention for the same reason as highschool of the dead subverting expectations because while other dark magical girl anime, manga and light novels came out before Madoka magica none were nearly as popular or well rated nor do I think they were as influential there are only three right answers when it comes to magical girl anime being put on this list sailor moon, cardcaptor Sakura and the original Madoka magica.
I mean you say Haruhi is consistently good but more than half of Season 2 was *Endless Eight*.
@@THB192 fair but I still say it was at least better than the second half of death note
haruhi is the cringe anime fan pick, I would know because I was one. Deathnote has a broader more mass appeal.
@@spicykaraage641 how does that make it cringe ya death note is an easier show to get into doesn't mean that Haruhi is cringe and doesn't mean that my point that Haruhi is better than the second half of death note I'm not saying either of them are bad I like both a lot but if you were to ask me which one I would choose to watch all the way through it would be Haruhi because in my opinion something mid with potential to be good like the second half of death note is harder to watch than a bad show like Boruto for example can you unironicly tell me that the second half of death note is good also Haruhi isn't even in my top 10 and neither is death note however I still like both and don't like it when people under or oversell them depending on what half of death note you are talking about it will either be better or worse than Haruhi the first half better but the second half not so much
@@Thehenta1menace The cringe is just the stereotype and its a joke as I consider myself like that previously, its not serious, its just how I see it, and how I'm reminded of myself when I think about it. I'm fully aware that deathnote is not perfect but its nowhere near as bad as boruto tho, but 30 year old me will pick over haruhi simply because its storyline is more accessible to people outside of the anime fandom and hence a larger impact, there is a reason why it was one of the seinen anime chosen for a live action.
I think 2 missing are sao, nothing popularised the isekai genre like sao did it literally exploded it.
And the other is oregairu, easily the best written and most talked about romcom in anime, literally nothing comes close to its quality and it influenced so many reddit, 4chan and facebook analysis its insane. It literally created the Reddit analysis thread for anime.
Look at them forgetting OHSHC
Hmm, don't care much about any of those 7, but I can see why they'd be chosen.
Maid-sama, influential romcom. Initial D.
Highschool of the Dead is the whole reason we have Hoyoverse series in the first place
I'm sad not alot of people think of chobits for echi anime
well at least they agreed on 7
Surprised You’re Name wasn’t there if they were looking for a Romance anime to add.
I actually agree. Like it or not, Makoto Shinkai became his own genre the way Hayao Miyazaki is a genre. May not be as influential but it put a lot of attention on anime romance movies among the non-anime crowd
Bro, what is going on? How does Trash Taste has that good of a set?
High school dxd is watch helped launch my CZcams channel “Powercore productions” it shocked me because I was surprised that anime could even be this Ecchi. However if you looked past the Ecchi the world building is surprisingly good and to be honest if it was taken more seriously and the written was shifted to a shonen style it could rival the best shonen anime’s in my opinion. At the very least the only anime of the big 3 I’d take over dxd is Naruto but I’ll dxd over one piece and bleach and not think twice about it
I do say it does take itself more seriously later on in the light novels which shocked me the first time i read it but it just goes to show that ecchi/harem can have a good story and be entertaining
Lol you're a brave man
for sports category they don't put captain tsubasa? that show legitly inspire a lot of people to play football though. And no pokemon on the list too?
Pokemon should have been on the list because of it's influence especially in regards to r34
Just completely forgot about berserk
I deadass started watching anime because I was a horny 12 year old that found out about high school of the dead. Super valid pick for me.
Theses guys not even mentioning captain tsubasa as influential... I am not saying it is the greatest, but denying how loved it is; is kind of insane.
Lain
Hajime no Ippo for sports anime
why is he so nervous
Death note is definitely more influential than Haruhi.
