- r/Maliciouscompliance In today's episode, OP works at a coffee shop with a terrible, sexist boss who constantly harasses his female employees. Eventually he pushes things too far when he implements a new dress code requiring the lady employees to wear sexy outfits to work. The male employees maliciously comply by showing up to work the next day wearing the sexy outfits: short skirts and bare midriffs. The boss reverts the policy shortly thereafter.

Never understood the logic behind giving your best employee an ultimatum. The only thing that ruins a good employee faster is the bizarre favoritism of the lazy ones.
Unfortunately, employers know that the best employees will keep working while the lazy ones are the harder to retain ones, unless the opposite is true, then they panic.

As a Dutch person it is always so funny to read "In our Office, people would often cycle to work and therefore need to shower and get ready at work".
Meanwhile here it is extremely common to cycle to work without instantly needing a shower.
How far are they biking? I know biking to work is extremely common in the Netherlands. However, in the United States, all the people I know who bike to work usually bike 5-10 miles at least each way. In the summer, no matter how in shape you are, you are going to get sweaty doing so.
Spring/summer/fall gets to 90-100 F here with high humidity so if you bike to work, you need a shower even if you start before the sun comes up
@@queenofputrescence5167 I mean, I don't think that as soon as you get a bit sweaty you instantly need a shower.
And I also think that a big difference why you guys get more sweaty (even if you are fit) is because for a lot of cyclists there it is about speed. Even the "commute" bikes are build for speed and not comfort. Google how the average Dutch bike looks. There you sit upright and ride a lot slower.
But to answer your question, On average Dutch commutes are shorter, but that doesn't mean we don't also have enough people cycling those distances. For example from wikipedia: "Even for distances of 16 km (9.9 mi) or over, some 8% of secondary school children cycle in each direction to school, though this is mainly in rural areas where the closest secondary schools can be a fair distance away."
As for anacdotal, my father cycles about 10km to and from work each time.
I have had many classmates back in the day who easily cycled over 5 miles each direction to and from school. Whether it was 30 degrees C and sunny or whether it was raining hard. They didn't take a shower first.
I am not saying people shouldn't be allowed to take a shower before work, or that they are weak doing so. I just find it funny that some people see this as a must to accomodate them.
@@queenofputrescence5167 3-12 miles to work, one way no matter the weather, which also means people go trough a snow storm (last week we had a lot of snow and still people cycling). We have Summers with 86 to 104(although the last one usually just a few days)Fahrenheit (says the converser). A lot of rainy and windy days. Still we cycle to work, to school,, to the uni, for grocery shopping, everywhere. We never shower before that, like that is so rare that people look at you like you are ill. Also most work places don't have showers at all. So no matter the weather if you need sweaty fast: cycle slower, take DEO and a T shirt with you and that is how you will get through your day. (Everyone cycles here, most people just a few miles, but for work and school it is more than just a few.)
Back in my day we used to cycle 10 miles each way up hill to school and we were so much tougher for it /s
I would rather people smell good then like they cycled or walked for km/miles to work. So eh let them do what they want.

I always thought that when these stories refer to dishwashers, they were referring to housemaids or the servant who washes the dishes (the dishwasher).
And the first time I understood what a dishwasher was, I was like, "you guys have a machine for washing dishes?! How many dishes do you guys use?"

It's an American sterotype. Just like the Karen and Kevin sterotype.

Hey rslash! I’m an auditor, and as it’s the busy season, I work late nights, sometimes going without any sleep. Your videos keep me company during all my late nighters. Am grateful to have such an animated storyteller ease the stress of work 🤗
Isnt it amazing how much of a difference having the right tone to your voice and just being a decent human can make? Had the owner just said "hey, I'd appreciate if you came in on time" he would have avoided having to close by himself for a couple nights and not p!ss off his best employee
And my smart-ass self said-
“What are we going to do with our son going off to college?”
So many malicious compliance stories reflect that line from "They Closed Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot": "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."
I had a manager similar to the last one. She would push people to see how much bs they'd take. One girl worked 3 other jobs and could afford to lose that job so she wouldn't take any bs. I shut down after a little bit and stopped putting in effort so she could push me a little before I cracked. This one girl though, she was a total doormat. She was so mean to the point that she would barely talk when the manager was in the store. After COVID I talked to that manager about how I loved working with her but she was a bit of a chatterbox (on days she wasn't there). My manager was so stunned that she wouldn't shut up on her days off that I said to her, "You're always way tougher on her than anyone else."

"Work getting done on time" > "workers arrive on time"
Managers:

That snooty manager who told OP to 'think on his position' seems to think his employees are children who act out and get 'time out' punishments. Weird!
the kid eating straight chocolate chips secretly while reading minecraft fanfic at night? yeah, that uh.... that hits too close to home.

You are wasting electricity, of course I understand your dad's side. It is such a waste of all that cold air going out the window and the hot air coming in.

I will never understand why managers decide to nickle & dime their best employees. Like, dude, don't screw with the one guy who's basically keeping your company afloat! XD
Wait the title and picture are different lol
That first story sounds like dystopian corporate propaganda. Employees were happily giving away free work hours, an HR manager (for whatever reason) made them work only the time they got paid, everyone revolts in order to go back to being overworked and underpaid. WTF.
When you stayed up late, havent had coffee and you need something to keep your mind awake... My SaViOr. Love listening to 'em! Have a great day everyone!
First story: You see this pattern in so many businesses. Everyone is working so diligently for the company because of a positive workplace atmosphere, until corporate starts to integrate outside sources into the business who starts demanding change, even if just to make themselves appear like they're useful or doing something good. Morals goes down the drain, and the business results takes a beating because of it. Then they ask how that's possible, as if it wasn't obvious enough that their change in policy was the cause. And given the different opinions about HR, it's apparently a hit or miss regarding how they treat the workers for the companies they're hired by.
Second story: That boss is the definition of flying on cloud nine while being oblivious to the chaotic business model he's running. If I were in such a manager position and was told by the boss that I was "making excuses" while giving my all just to keep his business afloat, then I'd tell him to perform the manager tasks himself and prove if he can do a better job. And if he'd given me time off as well, I'd likely hand him the keys and tell him "Good luck running your train wreck of a coffee shop" and never looked back. By the sound of that boss, he was either running some shady side business and was making enough money to make ends meet anyway, or he's just too egotistic to learn from his mistakes. Never having to deal with him again is a win either way.
Third story: That's probably the most wholesome example I've seen showing when entitlement makes people act before they think, it'll come back to bite them in the butt. That's why I rarely appreciate when people are so much against even basic rational or critical thinking and wants to rush or say things that they'll regret later. Short-term decisions ain't always worth the long-term consequences, but sadly there are those who can't seem to fathom what that entails, or chooses to ignore it because they're so convinced they know better. But hey, their lives and their choices.
Fourth story: Either this boss just wanted to implement some sexist Hooters clothing policy, which would be the mildest case of his moral depravity, or he was looking to do some "shady" stuff with the CCTV footage beyond whatever security reason he had them up for. Neither of those things makes him any less of a dirtbag. His "bribing" the female employees with extra shifts was merely the introduction to what kind of creep he is. Good thing that the sexual harassment got dealt with swiftly and conveniently.
Fifth story: You know what they say, some people just can't appreciate what they have until they lose it. In the job industry, it's so common to be informed to not let your negative emotions get the better of you when on the clock. Sadly there's a lot of superiors who let the same negative emotions be in control when interacting with their employees, so they have to be reminded that they're equally as responsible to keep a professional attitude as the people they employ during business hours.
I’m wondering if that coffee shop story is the Starbucks near where I work-they have a massive rotating staff and none of their baristas ever seem trained. It would not surprise me in the least if this was why. 😂
The story about the boy putting running the dishwasher with one glass reminded me of something my brother did when he was about 8. My mom asked him to put 2 slices of bread in the toaster. A few minutes later she went to the toaster and there was the bread, untoasted, in the toaster. She asked my brother why he didn't push the bread down to toast. He said, "You just asked me to put bread in, you didn't ask me to push it down." LOL
That coffee shop boss propositioning his female employees for more shifts is committing quid pro quo sexual harassment
Short story from when I was a kid. Lower middle class family, not poor but on a budget. Would always get a little money for skating rink. After a small argument about not doing as I was told I was given a $20 and told to bring home the change.
Needless to say, I brought home the change. After admission, videogames and food... was about .63 cents. He was not amused...
Honestly this is my favourite series and it’s absolutely hilarious to watch people just go “ok, I’m gonna take what you said to the word.” And I love it
Rslash and his dad's argument had me rollin' "Do I pay the bills to cool the universe down?" Rslash But dad the universe is already cold.
When the boss said "Where are you going?" And OP said "Home", who else immediately thought of longbeachgriffy? 😂
"while reading minecraft fanfic on his kindle" that's gonna be on r/brand new sentence anytime soon.
"Don't rock the boat until you know what's keeping it afloat."
Oooh, I like that one! Never heard it before, but very applicable.
My Canadian aircon/window story:
My parents kept our house cold when I was a kid (68 f). One day I was in my room and I was cold so I opened the window. My mom came in and yelled at me, "do you know how much it costs to have a window open while the AC is running?"
I responded, "about as much as when you have your window open in the winter?"
She sleeps with her window open in the winter. She had no response.
1st story - I can't tell if you all were working the amount of hours you were supposed to work or if you spent time working for free... either way you should get paid for your actual time.
2nd story - Good for you, getting that replacement job ASAP.
3rd story - Parents were kids once, so why don't they think a little more about what they say to their kids, and spell out expectations thoroughly rather than expecting children to just divine via ESP how to do stuff?
4th story-Creepy new owner trying to maximize his position of power. Hope he got sued for sexual harassment at some point.
5th story-Funny how the manager didn't mind you getting off schedule to help him close up, but then had to be a total shmuck about you being a little bit late to arrive in one day. Only reason to go back to doing that after his attitude is if you liked the OT pay.
Fourth story: That's what I was thinking. I'm wondering if the coffee house was a franchise or independently owned. If franchised, they can make a complaint to the district manager with an attorney present. If independently to owned, they needed an attorney.
The one manager... OP should've added to quitting by saying to him "You should take this time to consider your future in the company" or something.
On the first story when OP said downward trend I immediately visualized
A plane (being the business with the owner inside) losing one of the wings (the wing being op) and then the plane starting to crash but instead of crashing into the ground it flies into a bottomless pit and losing all of its other wings (the employees) and then the owner plummeting into the pit (SEVERE FINANCIAL LOSS AND DEPRESSION)
How is OP supposed to manage a coffeyshop without authority and still be held responsible for mistakes out of their controll?
The last story though.. That boss really messed up, all because he has a sucky attitude.
First story: I know how to make programs and my first teacher gave me a really good tip that work with everything. "If something works, don't fix it."
That 10 year old boy reminds me of something I did as a kid. I had gone to the local pool with my mum and her friend. The local pool was roughly an hour walk from where we lived. This was the 70s, decades before mobile phones were a thing. Mum was wishing my father would pick us up, so in a joking voice, her friend told me: C, go home, tell your father to pick us up then hurry back here so you can be picked up also. Both mum and her friend laughed at that idea. Being a cheeky child, I decided to have some fun. As a child, I walked heaps and that day was no exception. So I walked home, asked my father if he could please pick up mum, but not for 1 hour, as that's when she'll be ready to be picked up, then told him I'm going back to the pool. He said ok.
So I get back, and mum's friend, after recovering from shock, asked where my father was. I said that he was on his way. Sure enough, not long after I got there, my father came and collected us. My mum's friend never made such a stupid request ever again.
If this was me, after biking in, I'd be seated at my desk at exactly 9 am, in my cycling gear, all smelly and sweaty. I'd take a shower and change at my first break at 10:30.
"And my smart-ass self self said -"
*Add:* Vibe with Jet2 Holidays!
I'm not sure how that coffee shop outfit managed to grow into a chain with ownership like that, but sooner or later the owners will run it into the ground.
I just want to say thank you R Slash for all your amazing videos. These really brighten my day and I look forward to the 15-20 minutes of stories. I have watched you like everyday for a straight year, and will continue to do so. Stay safe and and healthy man!
With the HR person who made the rule, that everyone had to be at their desks by 9am. I was thinking the same basic thought, that was mentioned afterwards. No matter if it's a new HR, Manager or Owner, they should first take some time to see how things are being run. Because it either been working good so far, so keep doing so. Or its not, then see what needs to change, for example.... New rules, how things are set up in the work place, or if there is one or more employees that is messing things up... where by they need to be retrained or fired.
I'm in an HR Management class. How in the fuck do you go into an office culture and then change it? Like this was deadass the first thing we learned about.
How you interact with another office's culture could make or break company deals, and easily turn a work environment toxic. WTF!?
I would have called the Better Business Bureau the minute that I wasn't promoted past the probation time with the stupid owners having the iffy syndrome of not giving anybody straight answers
Running the AC with a window open and he doesn’t understand why the dad got mad?? You are wasting electricity
The last story is something I can relate to. I walk two hours to get to my place of work because I don't have a car, and sometimes that means i end up a little late (usually just a few minutes) but sometimes I can be hours late (if weather is bad, or i am getting a ride and they cancel) and I almost got fired over it once. I often would stay to help close for the extra hours though, and so I could catch a ride home. After all, if I am gonna be sitting around after work, why not help out and get paid? But after that I've just been waiting til my scheduled hours, and when it's time to clock out, I'll just head home.
I love how the dude wanted a manager to make the store better but doesn't let them do anything that will accomplish that. Wouldn't let them fire the incompetent people, hire anyone better or anything else needed
Go back to that bad coffee shop get like the cheapest thing and sit around all day. 😂
the story about the coffee shop, i love how they put the screws to the slimy manager
It’s really upsetting when you get so good at your job management starts thinking you aren’t doing it because they don’t have problems to solve. I dealt with it for about 6 months after having been in the position 3 years with minimal promotion. Needless to say once I walked out so did everyone else within the month. But that’s on them saying I’m replaceable. I do miss the position because of all the awesome people I’ve met, not the job responsibilities. Was my first ever job and made some friends and I’m forever grateful for that. I just wish they would have listened to the 1 person who stuck around for the long run
I legit chuckled at the Karen Wife dishwasher one. She got what she asked for, she just didn't stop to calm down and think that one through before she made that 'demand' that she demanded.
It's exactly the sort of stuff I would gladly have done, and I don't see anything wrong with "running the dishwasher when there are dishes in there" since she didn't clarify 'how many dishes' should be in before it's run. Except for the waste of dishwasher stuff (i.e. tabs or gel) being used in the dishwasher, on as little as one dish; that's a casualty.
0:25 to be fair though, if you know you’re cycling and have to shower, you should be leaving at a time that gives you enough time to cycle, shower and ready to start work at 9. It’s not a one off late thing
Thanks for making my work day better ! A great way to start the day 🤟🏻✨
@10:45 You could have said "there's no air conditioner that could cool the universe". LOL
Chat at the coffee machine and people desk is oil for the machinery. Also, someone chatting is someone who wouldn't be productive at the first place.
Not intuitive, but it's a win. People create bond and the net result is more efficient communication.
It's much easier to say to someone that he screwed up and give an hand when you have good bonds. It's not even easier, it's in the scheme of things.
I have worked in a company where breaks were huge, so big I thought they were going to a daily meeting 😂 Until, if I recall, someone asked why I didn't came.
Those chats and breaks are very important. Many times an original solution is found when someone looks concerned and another ask what's going on then the guy explain and someone else either had the same issue or give another insight.
Some companies do realize it, but go with the wrong implementation: Team Building.
Those are mostly welcome (when not uncanny), but they do not replace bonds ones can make during breaks.
It's also why it is important to have a coffee corner and/or break room.
It's also weird, but there should not be too much coffee machines, having a small queue do help in bonding.
That's how you force people to be together without being coercive.

That story about the slime ball owner brings back memories of a owner I worked for at a dinner.
