  • r/Maliciouscompliance In today's video, an entitled Karen thought that zoo signs don't apply to her. So when Karen ignored a warning sign that said "Sit behind the yellow line," the zookeepers saw an opportunity for malicious compliance! Karen, I hope you brought your raincoat, because you just entered the SPLASH ZONE! A zookeeper tells a command to the lion, who turns around and gives Karen a full body spray!

    kinda gross animal fact:
Cat urine smells so strong because it's very concentrated. This is an adaptation to living in very dry climates. Basically, their body gets as much fluid out of their food as possible, and part of that process is that a lot less water is used to create urine.
This means that the urine that does get released is far more concentrated, and thus smells far stronger than most animals from more temperate climates.

I've actually seen the exact same situation with the lion happen before
We were at a zoo in South Carolina when I was about 10 or so and there was a lion exhibit, ofc, with signs *everywhere* about how the male lion would spray and to be careful and not use flash photography
A Karen, older Karen, and their spawns were ignoring the keepers and the sign and being really obnoxious, taking flash pictures of the lion and his lionesses, and I will never forget what happened to this day
He stood up, my mom and grandma knew exactly what was about to happen and yanked me behind a tree for cover
And the lion walked right up to the group of Karens, turned around, and sprayed them
My mom, grandma, and I were fine due to the fact we hid behind a tree at an angle, but Karen and her group got absolutely blasted with lion pee

Finally, a context I can tell this story in.
I’m the oldest of 5 kids, and when we were much younger my parents would take us to the zoo every few months, as they do. Around the time this story takes place, my youngest brother was 3 or 4, and was allowed to walk around instead of sitting in the stroller with my baby sister. We had just gone in to the pachyderm building at our zoo, and as we were walking by the rhino exhibit, the rhino started peeing on the wall. He slowly started turning around, and everyone knew what was about to happen, so we started walking away. Everyone except my little brother, who stood in awe, watching the rhino making a line of pee on the wall before it finally turned around, peeing all over my little brother. Luckily, my mom carried changes of clothes for everyone and lots of wipes and he was given an impromptu bath in the zoo bathroom, and he now has the nickname “rhinocer-piss”

Story time: my parents bought a house from some people who we later realized weren't crazy because they were old and one of them had cancer, they were just absolutely crazy before that too. There was a room that stunk of ammonia. The neighbors told us that she would keep her cats in there. And we thought, oh, lots of cats like 12 cats. No. Like 50 cats. All just living in this same room, pissing over the walls, having more cats because none of them were cared for properly. When we took the drywall out of room, the nails were rusted. We stripped up the linoleum and had to chemically clean the concrete before the the smell started to abate.
Tldr cat piss will ruin a room for you and your children and your children's children

The Lion story reminds me of an interesting encounter my family had with a gorilla at a zoo. The gorilla enclosure had this one glass wall that guests could approach to watch the gorillas. By the time we got there, there was a huge crowd of probably 20 people and this big buff gorilla walked up to the glass and without hesitation, pressed his butt against the glass and proceeded to take a massive dump right in front of everyone. The other gorillas just watched, not really doing anything and the crowd of people were just in absolute confusion. When he was done, he walked off looking like the proudest animal in the zoo. I have no idea what happened to make this gorilla do that but someone must have ticked him off.
What makes this funnier is that OP mentions their story might have taken place at the San Diego Zoo, which is exactly where my story happened. I don’t think any of these animals have any shame at all. Heck, a few days before or after we visited, a giraffe gave birth right in front of guests. It’s a cool zoo.

The airport agents one upsets me alot. I'm Arab too and I was put on the "must be always "randomly" searched" list for years. When I was 14 I was randomly searched in our London Heathrow airport layover at the inspection area, then because my dad had a bad leg from an injury so we were let on the plane first , well, we were supposed to be. A lady stopped us mid-boarding saying I was AGAIN requested to be randomly searched. I was a 14 year old teenage girl too. They told my dad to continue boarding and my dad was like "No! She's my daughter. She's a kid." The lady looked kinda confused but then searched through all my stuff as all the passengers watched us while boarding before us. The lady even looked through my bright pink phone, my purse and my carry on. She then patted me down, in front of everyone and put her hand to squeeze my hijab. She didn't like that I looked like I wanted to cry. She also didn't like my red face, probably thinking I was hiding something. When we finally boarded every single passenger was looking at me, a young girl, like I was a criminal. I cried on that flight, arrived to the US and got stopped by border control too. They again searched EVERYTHING. My luggage, my carryons, my undies bag, my laundry bags too. They couldn't even get me a female staff even after I asked for one. When they saw the dates I brought from my home country they checked it too. Like why make a young girl feel like a criminal? I cried again on the drive home. I hated TSA from then on. 10 years later and I can still say it was a terrible experience.

I used to work at a science center that had a small zoo. One of the extra events you could pay for was getting to go into the polar bear den and feed the bears. When you entered the den, there was a ladder to your right, which took you on top of a massive steel grate above the den. (The event involved going up that ladder and dropping polar bear chow in for the bears.)
In front of you when you came in, though, was a door with an empty window frame. I never knew why it was open like that, but because of the opening there was a red line painted on the floor between you and that door. This was the "Line of Death," so named because it was about how far the bears could reach through that window. All of this was explained before the outer door to the den was opened. Remember the story from the Anchorage zoo from years ago. A lady stepped over the bar in front of the polar bear cage, to take a picture of Binky at the back, who was sleeping. As soon as she got up to the cage the bear rushed her and had her thigh in his jaws in nothing flat. He finally got beat off, and the ladies leg was saved, but it was a close thing. She''d been an idiot, but she admitted it and told everyone it wasn't Binky's fault. You can google this, it was scary as hell.

I really don't understand people who intentionally bypass barriers that are there for their own safety. I mean, do they think the zoo put up a barrier because the staff doesn't want the visitors to get a good look at the bear so they leave happy and come back again? No, it's there so the visitors don't get injured or killed!

As well as being an exercise in bias confirmation there's evidence that systematically targeting one group as "criminal" contributes to the problem through both expectation bias & the sense of injustice. As soon as one group gets lableled, judicial fairness is compromised as "benefit of the doubt" isn't likely to be applied, which someone in a different group might get as they're seen as acting "out of character". The demonstrable evidence for this is that "blueshirts" get 20% longer sentences for the same crimes, and are often portrayed as the perpetrator even in situations where they are the victim of the state itself.

As I bent down to look in a cage I felt the old cat scramble up my back, he swatted my glasses off, grabbed them in his mouth and made us play "Chase Me" for half an hour before he got tired and gave up. This was 23 years ago when I was a baby so rules were a little more relaxed at zoos... damn, I feel old now.
The path passing the lion enclosure was right beside the fence, whereas now there is a prickly bush separating the two.
My mother was pushing the pram along, and the lion came up to the fence, took a sniff, turned around and peed on me and the pram I was in!
In fairness to my mother, there was no warning from staff and she didn't know lions liked to pee on people!
Apparently it was like cat pee, but 10x worse...

cdg is literally one of the worst places i’ve had the displeasure of being. every time i’m there they find a new way to make it absolutely miserable. one time they had two guards yelling at me and berating me for removing my shoes before the metal detector, saying that i didn’t listen and blah blah blah. the thing to note though is that there wasn’t a single sign telling us that we shouldn’t remove them, and the airport workers were speaking french up until they started yelling at me. it’s fully possible that they informed everyone that spoke french, but i am not a person who speaks french. i was literally only there for a layover from korea to norway, so i wasn’t exactly focusing on my french studies for this trip. another time they fully moved my flight to another gate without informing anyone, resulting in every passenger nearly missing the damn flight. the only place they updated was their website, which was nearly impossible to check because their wifi kept failing. there was no announcement, no staff that came to tell us, they didn’t change the boards to say which gate we had to go to, shit even the help desk didn’t know. when one of us finally got through on the website, it showed a gate on the complete opposite side of the airport, so nearly an entire plane worth of people had to sprint like our lives depended on it, and no the people at the gate were not lenient whatsoever. i’m pretty sure some people legitimately missed the flight through no fault of their own. sooooo to say that i’m surprised at that cameraman’s experience there would be a massive lie.
