First story: Greg may have lost the fight but he won our hearts. Good on him for taking it like a champ.
What I don't get is when OP said that it was before the age of participation trophies.
For as long as I can remember, trophies were given to every member of a sports team that participated in a competition, even if they didn't win. Sort of a commemoration to remember the good times.
Now, MEDALS were only given to winners.
It's kind of like how almost everyone graduates, which is an achievement, but only a few get honors.
@@Nerobyrne I guess participation trophies weren't as common at the time where op is from
Maybe the real fight was the friends we made along the way ❤
His father should have taken his son's example in this. Also: 'this is why I live with Mom'. LOL. That kid had his head on straight, I hope Greg matured into, well, a truly mature individual. Good on ya, Greg!
@@Nerobyrne ... What? Seriously? If I lost, or my team lost, we got nothing. Well, okay, we got a commemorative ribbon, but that was a far cry from actually winning a trophy or a medal. Because... why? Why would you give someone who loses a trophy JUST for being there? I don't see folks being handed out participation medals on the Olympics, do you? I don't get that whole 'well, but I did SOMETHING so I deserve SOMTHING' mentality. For the record: this is not directed at you personally!
Moral of story 2: If you have an employee who does way above and beyond to make your business work like a well-oiled machine; maybe, just MAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYBE don't try to throw your weight around to berate and belittle that person and end your tirade with something like "just do your job".
"Just do your job" is right up there with "of course you can have that in writing"
Makes me wonder about all these other "terrible employees" that didn't do a good job or stopped showing up... I know there are plenty of people like that but if this guy does this with a stellar employee can you imagine an average one? They probably left because of him. Good thing OP was able to screw their head on straight.
@@hotarubinariko - People don't quit jobs (usually). They quit bad bosses.
@@tearstoneactual9773 100% agree.
Greg wore that LOSER ribbon like a badge of honor, what a lad
Two things people hate:
Sore losers and annoying winners.
Greg is neither, which is cool. His dad should take notes ^.^
@@Nerobyrne Greg took that loss like a boss! (rhyme unintended lol)
@@garek56 That rhyme was totally calculated.
Lad? Ew brit
Reminds me of the Anime "My Hero Academia"
Greg sounds like a good level-headed guy who certainly didn't get it from his dad
Thank Luna.
Gregg: "Dad, stop it, you're embarrassing me! This is why I live with mom!"

Nope it's OOF Size: nuclear
Yeah, I had to pause the video to recover 'cause that punched the air out of MY lungs third hand.
@@IMADINOSAURNOTABIRD agree.
@@deathangel7335 yeah, after that Greg didn't deserve the "loser" badge
Gregg f-ing rocks. He has the mindset of a winner.
Story 2: OP literally goes above and beyond, far better than anyone else in months, and the boss, rather than greatly praise OP for their amazing work, decides to blow up every single time there was a *tiny amount of dirt found.* What do you call this behavior? Micromanaging?
Geez is that boss ungrateful
Nanomanaging
A lot of Malicious Compliance, Revenge and Anti-Work stories have this weird trend of terrible bosses treating their hardest working employees like absolute crap and it backfiring severely.
makes you wonder whether all those other cleaners they had truly were shitty by default or if they too just hated how the boss treated them. to me going through over a dozen of staff in such a short amount of time would 100% be a red flag.
As my Dad always says "If a store/business was once productive and now is suddenly not, the first place to look is in management."
@@phoenix402 - People don't quit jobs (usually). They quit bad bosses.
Story 6: Rather than that outburst, the VP should've instead asked OP (nicely might I add) why they changed the wording. It's a much better way to respond
I wish more parents teach their kids about the positives about loosing. And I wish I had Greg's chops when I met failure. Growing up with an oriental background and having massive pressure on passing tests did not work out great for me or my fellow grade schoolers.
There are some genuinely heartwarming stories in this one. The story of LOSER Greg and even the last story where the Vice-President conceded defeat, admitting wrongdoing. It's nice to see happy endings where people grow. But that kid, Greg... he is going places. He truly understands and embodies what martial arts tries to teach.
I've gotta say, that last story didn't end how I would've thought it would, it was actually very wholesome
Greg using that loser ribbon his dad got him into as a stepping stone and motivator to victory is awesome. I'm sure he's doing great in life if he kept that attitude.

@@coreylemon 😂 😂 😂 😂. Will do, my fellow odd human 😎😁.
Loser ribbon story: I also don't believe in "participation" trophies to make kids feel better. Something to mark that they took part in an event, maybe, as long as it isn't an "everybody wins" type of thing. Real life isn't like that and losses at grade school ages can teach valuable lessons about real life and where a person's strengths are and what's needed to improve. The kids that don't face these realities are shell-shocked when they face true adversity in adulthood and have no clue as to how to handle it. It also leads to very poor sportsmanship later on as well.
Damn, Kudos to the last person for admitting when they're wrong.
That does take quite a bit of backbone.
Story 1: While at University forever ago, before the internet, we studied traditional Kung Fu. There were no pads. In fact we were barefoot outside. It was full contact. Every move was practiced to perfection. There were no belts until it was learned to perfection. Breathing was important. Because, the belt ceremony involved running the gauntlet. That meant taking a shot to the solar plexus full force by everyone. If you had any air in your body at impact, it would do real damage. So, the first story amuses me.
Wow, Greg is a real one, that story was inspiring, and I wish I grew up in the 90s
I guarantee you this stuff still goes on today
The 90's were an interesting time.
I mean we had Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, Thunder Cats, Transformers. Not to mention the family sitcoms and other great shows too.

7:25 My guess is that he was waiting for OP to give up as so many others had done before him. Something about him being tired of putting effort into people who would put little effort in and dip. Devil's advocate, but he was possibly more focused on improving/maintaining his own work than watching another newbie fail so he treated OP with the expectation that, regardless of how well he had been doing, it was just a matter of time before he left as well. Just a guess based on a bit of personal experience
Got hit by the hurricane last night, and had a power outage for a hour.
Thanks Rslash for helping me with my morning.
Love from Orlando.
Know exactly what happens luck it missed west palm but good luck
I'm in Orlando right now waiting for it to go by. Luckily I still have power
@@lazly-prodictiv-6827 same here, guess we got lucky with the power.

That second story, at the beginning of it, he said the supervisor was skeptical of new cleaners because so many had left or been fired, but after listening further, the way the supervisor treated the OP, I see why so many others left before him. He was skeptical of a problem that he was causing. Kind of funny, from that perspective.
It also reminded me of a time before I ran a business. One of the many things I tried was janitorial work. I was in charge of cleaning a warehouse where they store the car parts that the company makes before shipping them off, the three sets of bathrooms, the two offices and the break room in said warehouse as well. I had issues with people from the previous shift not putting cleaning equipment back in the closet. Brooms, mops, my whole cart was even gone some days. And, they didn't leave everything in one spot, no, it'd all be spread throughout the warehouse. Mind you, this is a 650,000 ft² or more warehouse. So, I'd spend the first 2 hours of a lot of my shifts looking for and gathering the supplies, which meant I had to work for 2 more hours afterwards to get everything done. My boss didn't like the extra overtime I was having to put in so, he told me to just make due with what I was being left with. So, next morning I went in and the only thing the previous shift left in the closet was a single rag. So, I took that one rag, and using just it, I wiped down all the surfaces. No broom, I can't sweep. No mop bucket, I can't run mop water... So I mopped with a dry mop. No gloves to clean the bathrooms so they were skipped. I wound up finishing 2 hours early that day, and as I was clocking out to leave, my boss says 'You're not done, where you going?' I replied 'I did what I could with what the previous shift left. I left the rag in the dirty basket in the closet.' So he goes and looks at my closet and realizes that I didn't have any of my supplies. Needless to say I never had an issue with the previous shift not putting stuff back up after that.
Nothing like listing to rSlash and drinking coffee in the morning.
The second story just warms my heart. Even though I don't even know what the school's name is, I appreciate OP for doing his work
OP here, thanks for your kind words! Let's all do our best to make everywhere a better place!
I work in a group home. I often don't have time to clean like I would like. I appreciate it when the overnight staff do a good job and try to not leave the house dirtier than I found it. I'm sure that everyone in your school really appreciates the hard work you do!
The moment "This is why I live with mom" registered in my brain just made spit the Vodka I was drinking! Good gosh that was so funny~
2nd story, I used to be a contractor cleaning schools, I had weird rules but following them would leave the job not done. For some reason your not allowed to move the kids stuff to clean desks. Fortunately we did that anyway and the teachers I cleaned for, were okay with that.
Ok….the cleaning story…
YES!
I was a custodian/ maintenance at a school for 5+ years. They got new admins and it went to crap!
I was doing 13+ hours of work a day (doing 3 peoples jobs at once)
I ended up quitting because it was just to much. They were in the process of out sourcing the cleaning and they had passed my name on to them…they hired me.
The out sourcing company was amazing with making sure you didn’t work yourself into the ground and would even defend you when the idiot admins complained.
Eventually the school went back to the original set up and hired everyone the company had (the company understood if we wanted to stay and continue but also gave us the ability to get a job with them later on if it didn’t work out at the school.)
Well the company had put me into a head/leadership roll over a team of 4 in a building (multi building school) and the school left me in that position. Everything was fine the first few months until the admins decided to keep scheduling events without informing custodial and complaining and threatening our jobs.
The admin of that building had threatened my job if I didn’t unplug a live 240v light while live because it was flickering due to a water leak and water was pooled in the light(led panel)
I quit again due to getting triggered (I have PTSD due to abuse)
The school has recently hired a teacher who has no teaching license due to getting with an under age student in the past.
I just can’t.
2nd story: 15 different janitors just leaving abruptly or not being good enough is just a major red flag for the workplace. It's statistically extremely improbable that FIFTEEN PEOPLE IN A ROW don't fit the standards or they quit because they're not dedicated to their job. 99% of these cases it's the work environment that is toxic, as it is in this case (as OP revealed it's the custodian that surely bullied all the previous janitors as he tried to do with OP). Plus, doing 110% is almost never the wiser thing to do, especially if you're an employee, because people above you will never appreciate you and instead will always demand more and better performances
"that's why I live with mom" just perfect
10/10 to Greg, and to the school cleaner
2nd Story: Gee I wonder why the other cleaners didn't stay very long with such a wonderful boss... /s
I wonder too
---
I personally gave a month;
was cleaning a butcher-house:
- No details upon the dirt-spots or anything else in relation when I requested numerous times photos or something actually helpful
E.G. they wrote
"There was blood at the killing floor / the blood-letting-grates."
"Grease on this pipe in this general area"
Zero details, especially by not mention of the location-spots or the amount of the dirt.
- Suddenly not allowing co-op working with another person / forcing to solo the once-a-week / weekend-targets, and then also expecting to do a 2-hours "U-turn"-travel at home instead of resting at the workplace.
MR. "Within-Five-Hours", who was also the very only occasionally-on-the-site-manager and also suddenly / with less than 48-hours-notice left for a vacation, was indeed such an inspiration to us all...
(( Yeah, I've told this already few times elsewhere;
seemed fitting to tell it again here. ))

Greg is the person I aspire to be and he’s just a child… I hope you do amazing things Greg.
OP from the second story here: I was pleasantly surprised to see my story on your channel, rSlash! And yeah, my boss sometimes is kind of an idiot, but he's much better now!
It does show you have to appreciate the things people do otherwise something like this can happen.
Second story: as always, no one appreciates your job until you stop doing it.
Have to say that the boss in the last story did great.

As an American from the Curry Family, I am not surprised a company with the same name is absolute crap. Lol
Talk about a Chad amongst Chads, Greg is a legend
This morning was just no bueno for me. A bit of r/malicious compliance cheered me up a bit.
11:29 You've all heard "never mess with this IT guy" now get ready for "don't fire the engineer who makes your job easier"
As sad as it is, if someone consistently goes above and beyond for their job, it just becomes an expectation for their role instead of being recognised as doing them a favour. Then if the worker dare to ask for pay rise, the managers will just say, but you're just doing your job!
I think that first story was what lead to participation trophies in the first place. Entitled parents, of course.
Ya think? Considering how many people who recieve participation trophies find them humiliating, I would be surprised if it wasn't
Random Kouhai: So did you win or did you lose?
Greg: Yes
Similar to Curry's: A furniture company here doing deliveries, Every delivery was late-with the same excuse, 'the driver had an accident', or that the furniture would arrive broken. Customer Service was a joke. They went bankrupt-Go figure. Their 'Liabilities' were Far in excess of their 'Assets'-like 10 to one-i.e. they Never had the product to deliver.
Greg proved himself the _real_ winner by wearing that ribbon with pride.
The first story reminds me of my mom. She took karate for a long time, taught it to little kids for a bit. But what I remembered most is that she was doing karate while being I believe months pregnant with my little brother. No one wanted to spar with her because they didn’t want to hit the baby. My mom just said, “don’t kick me in the stomach then.”
Story 2 - so the reason they'd had 'bad luck' with cleaners - 15 in 4 months - was the custodian, clearly. He is the single common factor and demonstrated his poor knowledge and management...
I once got a write up at McDonalds because we were expected to use a butter brush to apply butter to the biscuits.
I noticed that someone left the butter on top of the oven one day and it melted, so I poured it into a new grill seasoning sprayer.
Then, the biscuits would come out the oven and I would spray the biscuits.
THAT was not policy!!
THAT was a write up!
Until next week---we were ORDERED TO USE THE SPRAYER----OR ELSE.
🤔🤨
The worst thing about the karate story is remembering that the early 90s were THIRTY YEARS AGO D: I feel so old :/
Story 3: yeah he definitely won't do it again, because his "lawyer" took one look at this and said "I'll only do this for $50,000, in advance"
Last story: Amazingly enough, some people are actually capable of learning, though it often takes a 2x4 to the side of the head to jar enough neurons loose for them to use.
Second story: you're not paying attention, he's probably not the first person to do the job properly, why do you think so many cleaners have come and gone by? They probably quit after the same complaints or didn't stand up and get fired
I wished this compliance was more malicious
As someone in the UK who has been burned by Currys before, I hate that they're one of the biggest tech retailers in the country but have a website that hardly functions most of the time. I wonder how many hours I've spent on hold for their customer service when things have gone wrong.
That's really weird as I've never had a problem with them and I get all my electrical appliances from them.
2nd to last story: I’m pretty sure op didn’t know this but in the uk if a item isn’t delivered within a guaranteed date then the buyer can get a full refund with all posting expenses paid by the company and if they refuse it can lead to criminal charges and interest
As someone who's actually went down that route with Curry's... Its complete hit and miss whether they'll actually do it, because they think you won't actually go ahead with getting lawyers involved. A few even said that to my face. They still gave me the refund after dragging their heels on it for over two months
On the second/cleaner story, I think we see quickly why the school couldn't keep a cleaner...when you see a lot of people leaving a job it usually is the (mis)management. It is pretty telling that 5 seconds in before the manager came in I was already thinking it was the custodial manager. Good on OP though for still taking care of the kids
hopefully greg gave the loser ribbon to the guy he beat to move up, and it continues to motivate people to this day. well played by teacher and at least the kid was a good sport and had more maturity than his dad
"Participation trophies" were a thing in the 1980s. It was part of the Gen X where everyone got a trophy or ribbon for just showing up. It was the beginning of the end that gave us Gen Y and now Gen Z.
I'm Gen X and never ONCE got a participation trophy or ribbon. It was either blue, red, or yellow. If you didn't finish in the top three, you didn't get jack squat except a suggestion to try harder next time.
@@paden1865able Well dude. I guess you got cheated. Is that why you're so edgy?
@@thomasmoeller3446 Nope, not salty, just irritated by blanket statements in general. The parents and school district where I grew up taught us, for the most part, that you had to earn what you got, from rewards to grades. And yes, I am part of the older Gen X, having been born in 1965. I learned self reliance from not being handed everything I wanted, something I passed on to my kids.
@@paden1865able Sweetie. You are not GenX. Boomers ended anywhere between 64-70 depending on which report you read (whip out your google machine and look it up) so born in '65 makes you part of the generation that doesn't belong. Otherwise known as a "Cusper". For reliable differentiation, growing up/coming of age in the late 1970s through the 1980s makes you Gen X and recipients of "participation" awards. You didn't get one because you don't belong.
Just gotta say, the curry's story sounds a bit iffy to me. I live in the UK and have never had this issue with them, nor have I heard of anyone having this sort of issue with them. I used curry's to supply most of the electrical goods in my house when I first bought it.
Like Dabney always warns, “Don’t mess with the IT guy!”
I had never a fight to get promoted to a new belt. But I don't make karate, but I made judo.
On one occasion, where I still had the orange belt, was a tournament, where I alongside the trainer and a few others from my club went.
My trainer told me and one of the others, that we should warm up. I wondered why, because there was plenty of time before the tournament. But I didn't ask. After we were warmed up he asked me to show him certain techniques. I did so and at the end, he congratulated me, that I passed the promotion for the green belt. That was the moment, I eventually got it.
I remember vividly, because I had to lend the belt of one of the others for each of my fights, as I wasn't allowed anymore to fight with the orange belt and as I wasn't prepared at all. But, I think, that was the first time in a very long time, that somebody goes on a tournament and came back with a new belt.
I feel like it was wrong for the instructor to do that to Greg, especially because he wasn't the one throwing a fit over it. Glad he took it in stride but others may have been humiliated.
I didn't realize Texas had its own unique dialect. Bless that VP's heart, must be rough
W for Greg, biggest is not the person who prides his victories but his loses.
That loser ribbon actully helped that kid become stronger.
The story with the guy threatening legal action reminds me of my old job in as game support, our instructions were that if someone is making legal threats OR threatens to harm themselves (even if it's a clear "joke" like "ur game makes me suicidal coz its so bad") OR threatens to harm us in any shape or form (us being the support, the company, someone from the company specificaly, the game itself, etc) we had to disengage and take it seriously just in the off chance it was serious and send them a message corresponding to their action.
So if someone said "i'm gonna sue you for banning me" we would just send something like :
"We are sorry to hear you would like to pursue legal action, as part of our policies we are obligated to tell you that going forward any communication regarding your quiery will be done via our attorneys, please go to this link to give your attorney the informations needed to contact the correct attorney for your location". Those tickets would be also immediatly marked as closed after.
and for selfharm it would be something along the line of: "After reading your message, we are very concerned with your wellbeing. If you need help please follow this link to find the support needed". And then sent to a dedicated team.
And harming us would actually close the ticket and have it sent to a special team who would decide the seriousness and if any authority needs to be contacted or not.
They usually backtrack veryyyy quickly after that and "never meant it to be taken like this, it's just how i speak, i swear" because we canno't reply to their message until it's deemed ok or if they send a message about something unrelated. It was sometimes funny to come back to the day after (once the team looking into how serious they are being said we can reply) and there's 10 extra mails saying "please why u no answer my question, i said i wasn't serious" but by replying they've sent their own ticket back at the bottom of the queue every single time. ^^'
First story- that belt test system sounds like bullshit. I’m a 3rd degree brown belt in tae kwon do, and this sounds like a good way to just promote people who aren’t ready. I won plenty of fights as a green belt, damn sure wasn’t ready to get my blue belt.
This is the best way to start any day tbh.
Ah! I'm not the only person that seems to say "okie dokie artichokey" or "okie dokie lemon jokey" 😂 I always get "wtaf" faces whenever I utter either.
I got yelled at where I worked at cause I did more than the other workers and it didn't take me all day to do my cleaning. They worked well over 9 hours milking the time clock and I could get my work done and get it done right within the 8 hours they were supposed to be done by

I disagree that OP was the first decent cleaner in five months, and that the 'boss is cautious of new hires (and so behaves badly) because of high turnover.'
Because, it certainly sounds like the boss is a HUGE douchebag and that the high turnover is a result of his butthole behaviour. OP was just the first one willing to put up with the boss's BS.
What exactly did that dad expect to get? Good on Greg for turning it to his benefit. Also: come on mate, karate isn't MMA.
Smiling all the way home: I sure hope that company goes under. No one whose business model includes screwing over their workers deserves to stay in business.
Everyone in the comments: listening to rslash is my morning routine.
Le me: good evening my western frends ✌
Apparently this is a hot take but the bad guy in the first story was the instructor. Good on Gregg for being gracious, but the Dad brought up extremely valid cristicism and was understadably upset and the douche instructor just flat out immaturely disrespected him. I bet he felt big to put someone else down.
And in case people dont understand why the instructor was a bad instructor, think about the way he structures his gradings. It doesn’t matter if you have absolutely mastered the curriculum, it doesnt matter if you've worked super hard and earned it, you could miss out on your belt just because everyone else is bigger and stronger than you, or for some other arbitrary reason, maybe you were just sick or not at your peak on grading day but despite doing great you just didnt win sparring.
I'll tell you exactly why he did things this way. Most schools only have gradings as a full class half yearly or some even just once a year. Make sure no more than half your class can pass no matter how well they all do and youve just scored an extra six months to a year of membership fees and door fees. What a jack ass.
Second story: I have a feeling OP might not be the first good cleaner there, just the first one smart enough
Omg. "This is why I live with mom" lol. Priceless!
i listen to him while i’m at work and it helps my morning go fast
“Gi” is a hard G, like the one in goat. Fun fact - it comes from the same root as kimono!

Am I the only one getting flashbacks of sorts to some of the stories in the videos this month? Like, they've been read before, some a year or so ago, others more recently, like just a few months ago. I'd get it had it been due to an update, but that's also what TL;DR is for, to summarize the main post, followed by the update, whether it's on the same post or its own post
I'd also like if rSlash read the entire post and didn't skip information or such that seems very important for the context to be properly understood as well
Gotta admire Greg. He actually learned from that teaching moment and I see hope for him in the future.
Was anyone expecting the dad to be kicked out of his office literally
I kind of have a similar situation to the second story. My boss is an absolute petty nob and is the main reason we can't keep a cleaner longer than a few months.
Er....I think I'm Greg. That's not my actual name of course, but I got a handmade loser ribbon from my karate teacher when I was 14 after failing my orange belt test (Edit: in 1992). And my mom's boyfriend got one too. It's not QUITE how I remember it, but close enough that yea, I think I'm that guy. (Edit 2: Also I didn't wear that ribbon every time, I just wore it once. But yeah I wore a loser ribbon to class.)
Edit 3: I was never really into karate, it was just something I was kinda pushed into, so it was a half-assed commitment (which itself is a line I find myself using increasingly more frequently with each passing decade). The more I think about it, I remember that match in particular. I didn't want to spar, I didn't even want to be there, I just wanted to go home and play Nintendo lol
Second story they had so many cleaners because of the boss. After a certain number the blame goes somewhere else.
"This is why I live with mom!" This killed at my house. We were all laughing.
I think we figured out why all those cleaners stopoed coming...
Friendly correction, in ''coup de grâce'' the ''ce'' at the end is pronounce. Like the way you said ''gra'' was really good, but just add a ''s'' sound at the end and it will be perfection. Because otherwise for a french speaker, it sounded like you said ''blow of fat''. That being said, love your video! 😄
I'm liking these stories where the complyee admits their mistake and shapes up. Also, the janitor OP managed to enact MC without being petty or confrontational. Impressive!
The story at 8:50 was so awesome
Am I the only one who thinks the OP was also wrong in the last story? You do NOT change people’s words at work without consulting with them first. The OP should have made the wording change suggestion to the VP, not simply changed it without asking. That’s very unprofessional.
Not to be the party popper; the fact the author of the first story even mentioned Kobra Kai let alone tried to suggest its not "cartoonishly hardass", which is certainly is as karate on its own as practical martial art is outright fiction, is enough proof the story is fiction.
Now there are less practical like the garbage Segall pushes but any 2nd year BJJ student is gonna put a hurt on anyone who isn't an experienced talented student of an accomplished teacher.
And to answer your question from the end of the 2nd, when an insecure, likely out of shape and not well physically blessed/talented/trained/educated hires someone who is, a shitshow starts. It may take time but eventually that manager/owner's self esteem can't take it anymore and will either knowingly or unknowingly torpedo the relationship as they simply can't handle someone they feel superior to constantly reminding them of their inferiority.
I love your content but malicious compliance is my favorite hope you can do more
Greg proved that a ribbon of losers paves a path to be a winner.
