- čas přidán 8. 11. 2021
- Homeowner attempted to install a Nest thermostat - but after burning up 3 transformers - while ripping out all the boiler control wire - decided it was time to call a professional. Daniel started the job - but Mikey Pipes finished it and got the system up and running.

One good thing about nest thermostats, they make great hockey pucks.
Look on Peter Pans face when you were on a rant was priceless
Never mind I should watch the rest of the video first before asking questions have a great day guys stay safe thank you Saint Mike for all the great videos and knowledge you give to the CZcams community
Some customers are not worth the hassle , I can sniff them out real quick ! When she said the other company doesn’t want to work or service the equipment. That is a red flag right there !!!! No bueno!!!!
You guys are awasome!
2:00 That carpet says "Having money does not mean having good taste."
I think I Know why other company won't come anymore 🤣 I literally just left a house where homeowner was just as delightful
That First Lady was a real character
Fantastic that Mikey, greetings from a plumber in England.
Great content, I love it 💪🏽💯
Good lord I am so glad I don't have to listen to voices like that anymore lol.
Right!!!!
Don’t know how Mikey has the patience.
You think the host is annoying?
Thank you for the good laugh, needed that.
Great service tech on the phone. Thats how I try to be when I work the phone. Golden Rule.
God, I miss the Trades……miss the fun, camaraderie and the ball-busting that went with it…..😁
I think it would be helpful to have the annual service contract information provided as a handout to the customer since you have multiple plans available. That would also save time in dealing with customers like that lady who couldn’t make up her mind.
Deciding to wait is also making up one’s mind.
I've been in this business for a long time and I can tell you that ladies just a pain-in-the-ass there's a reason why there's been so many General Contractors and why the house is still half finished I would have given her an outrageous price just not to hear her anymore
Mikey Pipes said earlier in the video that he can’t give a price off the top of his head for the full yearly service plan because pricing is different based on the equipment that will be serviced because all parts and components have different prices on different machines
Like you said a good Technician is aware of his surroundings. Mikey pipes
Observent of his surroundings 😁
Mike , once again, very informative, thank you for giving us all ,this great information. 👍
Hello from the great state of Michigan
Thank you, Mr Mike Pipes. Every day, I have to deal with people that they drive $100.000 or have a big house with $180,000 swimming pool, and they think that I have to do a repear heat or cooling as they employee salary.
only a $180k swimming pool?
last time I had boiler with several Xfmrs in a pile I searched around and found a new central AC unit and a new t-stat in the hall. Turns out whoever installed the AC put in their own heavy duty 24V supply but tied the transformers together at the t-stat. I actually had 2 problems there which were not obvious till the AC season stared. First the multiple transformers were bucking each other because they were on different legs of the utility, hence the replacement of the smaller heating transformer. Second was the heat came on during an AC call but since it was a new system and was not run very long nobody figured it out right away. At the time (near 20 years ago) the easiest fix was a Honeywell t-stat with two R terminals to separate the heat from the AC. Been fine ever since.
like the new intro mikey pipes!
Another banger!
Good morning mike is this your son great video as always god bless stay safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Your helper is so cute
You should have a group meet, that’d be doopeeeee
I’ve been Plumbing for 2 years and I’m always watching videos of more experienced plumbers on CZcams. I have to say this “ yours are pretty good”. It’s awesome that you fix stuff and explain how the system works.
Can’t believe you answered. I just watched a video
Pipes. Don’t be fooled. We love the pipe doctor up here in Boston. We still like Bread Truck , but the doctor is Killing it.
How’s the smoking going ?
So Glad mine is a millivolt system.
No power
No problem
Dragging her feet when she walks. That would drive me mad!😂
Noticed that too
👍 have some self dignity for christ sake.
Like my Asian wife coming to bed lol
lmao the end
By the way Mike Great videos. After watching your video with the customer that installed the Nest thermostat, I noticed the settings on Pressuretrol is different than the settings on my
Pressuretrol. I have the same Burnham boiler and the same Pressuretrol switch. On the boiler that you serviced the main is between the 2 and 5 PSI mark and the Diff is between the
4 and 5 PSI settings. My Pressuretrol main settings is a little over the 2 PSI and the DIff. is between the 2 and 3 PSI settings Why do you think the Diff. settings on my control is much lower? When my house calls for steam the pressure gauge goes to 4 lbs, shuts off goes down to 2 lbs pressure and turns back on. It seems to cycle alot until thermostat is
satisfied. Does that sound normal to you?
When did Opie hop onboard? I must have missed a few videos since Ron Howard showed up! lmao!
you know what kills me is these people who live in a Taj mahall spelled wrong, want you to fix for free what some one else fucked up in plain English....
I love it. She has such the Long Island accent!!!!
No way; that's pure Brooklynese!
i always think I am hearing the Nanny...
@@Mercmad Me too!
Run away fast and never return to that first customer ......now you know why they've had 5 contractors.
Agree!!
I was looking for this comment before I made the same one. Holy cow. Surprise, surprise. The company that was servicing her boiler disappeared.
Mikey deserves every cent he makes because he is an expert at dealing with customers like this. Wealthy and gonna tell YOU exactly what they want and how they want it.
That’s why the other contractor doesn’t service her anymore
@@toddt6730 Her or her heating system ?
@@Mercmad that’s a good one, lol, both, actually when mikey found out about all those other contractors he should have skipped this one
I heard you and subscribed. 😂
12:23 had me dying.
After 5 mins every sense in me was screaming get out of there Mikey she’s a nightmare waiting to happen 😳🇬🇧
My brother installed a nest in his vacation home . It burned Two mother boards. House in NH it gets cold up there.
Now you need a hacks bring me stacks version stickers with a dead nest tstat and a home Depot husky brand screwdriver 😂
When she said Montilli wouldn't service her, your price should've went up. Just a typical 5 towns customer.
Mikey Pipes I think you got a hard piece o bread for a customer! God forbid!
Highlight is when Peter Pan gave you the stylus pen just when you’re about to hit done. lmfao 😂
Extended Car warranties or HVAC extended warranty ? Damn I hate making those decisions 🤣😂
Question i have the same Honeywell thermostat, I don't have a steam boiler, I have hot water system, but I have a transformer attach to the boiler with a R, C, W, G, and Y, I'm not sure where to hook up the C wire on the boiler.
Haven't finished watching, but in case it's not clear, hooking up a 24V control transformer backwards essentially steps up the 120 in to 600VAC, fed TO the low voltage components! No good!
Not hating but why throw Daniel under the bus? You called tech support as well. You are also guilty for schvitzing with that harness and limit switch
Facts
Because this guy is a clown and doesn't know shit as well
Sounds to me like when they hooked up the secondary to line voltage, you burned out the coil in your relay
Where do u normally get c for a steam boiler
Will service the Plainview (Nassau) county area
New five wire and new Honeywell T stat. New relay and transformer Problem solved. Oh and call to tech support.
You would be fun to work with lol 😂
Wow I know who where's the pants in that house. Mike round 3 of negotiations
Is it possible to connect a new zone valve from a new boiler to an existing Nest E, which controls the HVAC (AC) upstairs? We have a Nest for downstairs zone that was connected to an old boiler, but to add a zone instead of adding a thermostat, I thought it would make sense to control the HVAC (cooling) that's in the attic and the new heating zone from one Nest E.
@@PipeDoctor Agreed, I like Honeywell Wifi Thermostats.
Mikey, do you ever do oil burners?
FYI, I am the customer, good or bad especially when a husband that is no longer around, would appreciate a choice of written service contracts in plain English, you offer. Sign one and mail it back to me with a check enclosed and you are in business. Thank you so much. Keep those offers for contracts in your truck just like a part you use most days in a nice stamped envelope with your business already printed on the envelope. This should help your business unless you enjoy confusing old widow women and other non professional hvac clients. This advice comes at no charge to you. It works very well and saves time!
Is his tail dragging.🤣😂🤣😂
Sounds like someone doesn’t pay there bill that’s what I think I wouldn’t work there Mikey, reason construction goes on that long running out of money probably

I love her , she’s tuff .
pretty cool to see a plumbers perspective on nest. as an hvac service tech i have seen multiple nest tstats do some sort of voltage bleed which causes certain componets to chatter. usually causing damage to said componets. needless to say i despise nest. also, shout out to father/son work team.
Thanks so much for leaving your feedback as a plumber and an HVAC technician I do not like the nest thermostat
Mike I have to say you have a habit of hitting the wrong buttons lately on phones ( hanging up on trouble shooting )and diagnostic tools, lol
@14:15 Poor cap is probably thirsty after losin its juices 😧
I think someone wasn't being observant of his surroundings Mike. On that low water cut off, the lower cap was BAD, BAD, BAD. Top of it was completely swollen and bulged out. I fix computers so I notice these things right away. That equals failed cap (wonder if it just happened as a result of the transformer wiring getting reversed). Probably should change that out, though. Bulged caps like that can cause wacky voltage to the rest of the board.
Lol
Astute observation
That’s always the question where’s the guy who installed it? It’s always left us to figure it out it’s almost like fishing or profiler?
One look at those feet and I knew who you are dealing with!...God Bless... I would have told her a big NO!
HAHAHAHA excellent!
I’ll give you credit you are patient you guys do a lot of gas work on the island?
Mikey,
Don't pick on Daniel son he's a good guy 😜
Thinking he was mentoring him...and not shouting at him but merely imparting where he went wrong, he will learn and get there no bother...Great Upload...
I did understand her. She wanted a contract for two things. One is so she can have 24/7 service and the next reason is for not higher prices on weekends / holidays. Did I hear that correctly? Does services companies in HVAC offer this for home customers?
Company I work for had free repairs (ex. Hxc, compressors and coils) no diagnostic fees. Costs shit ton $ per system per year
if they wired the transformer fully backwards, with line voltage of 120v on the 24V side, then it would work as a very short life step-up transformer, potentially putting around 600volts into all the 24 wiring and connected devices. 🤣🙃 I imagine there was a loud flash-bang ⚡ 💣💥 and flaming sparky smoke clouds 🔥☁ from many places at once and soiled under-shorts 💩
**** also in video at 15:18 the top of electrolytic capacitor(c1) is blown open and vented, which was very likely from high-voltage mentioned above.
aging from heat and drying out by leaking through the seals can open them up, but they generally don't split open the top that far. I'm pretty sure that was a violent venting episode, with a bang and puff of smoke. I'd expect everything 24vac and maybe wiring to be dead/shorted/arc flashed. 🙄 some people shouldn't come within a mile of anything electrical ( 👉pointing at the homeowner or handyman)
I have general contractors means nothing is done right run!! Or the people are very difficult to deal with?
She is a tough cookie, i would of put in gear. Talk to to the asses, elbows and tail lights. lol
Yeah that first visit....can tell why her construction is taking so long probably...
Lmao does the $19.99 cover the system I’ve owned for a long time with iut having proper maintenance on it 😂😂😂
He owes you lunch
Lolll it’s funny after you start talking all this stuff about the boiler and she asked “do you know this machine”….personally I wouldn’t be able to resist saying something along the lines of “ehhhh I’ve never actually touched these but I’ve read about them in night school and this is my 3rd week on the job but I’ve never blown anyone up yet”
Whoomph!
I hate customers who ask you to repeat what you said to them 10 times more so they can confuse themselves even more about what you just said
That capacitor in the middle of the low water cutoff doesn't look too happy. Top is a bit puffy (I work on computers and this is a classic sign that the capacitor is going bad).
You’re telling Mikey pipes what a bad cap looks like?
@@murkyturkey5238 Just happened to catch my eye when the video hit that for a while, that was my candid reaction. I'm sure he knows, and it didn't seem like it was the issue, but it could become one in the future. I've seen probably a hundred of them on Dell Dimension computers for a while.
@@reallynotbob6 Honestly I tried to see it and I cant see where its swollen. I think you just have a really good eye for that
@@murkyturkey5238 Either that or my color blindness with the lighting altered my perception of it. It might not be bad.
No shit I think you're right
Now the internet knows his wifi password........
Can we talk about a SERVICE contract?!
FFS.... I see now why the other companies don't want to work here.
Have you ever signed up your phone on the national do not call registry. I helped me tremendously with those spam calls.
It drives me crazy to hear people get cut off. Let her finish dangit. Also put all that service contract stuff on paper. People feel like they're getting swindled when that info comes off the top of peoples heads; not to mention how hard it is to remember.
The low water cutoff has a bad cap, should be replaced.
What a mess? Let the tracing begin.
I dont have time or the patience! For customers like that.... Helicopters
She’s looking for an annual contract that would be given by and oil heating company here on Long Island most oil heat distributors that Phil oil tanks will also offer a contract for service. This allows them to distribute the bill evenly for oil across the year as opposed to varying rates or needing the customer to call when the tank was empty the company knows when to show up to fill five to $600 a year is a standard service fee. Plus the cost of fuel they’ll also usually change the filter for the oil line included in the cost of service and service the boiler and make sure it’s clean. However, when the house has gas, these companies no longer wanna work with you as they cannot sell your oil that’s most likely why her old company dropped her and Wife she’s looking for a yearly contract but I guess systems usually it doesn’t work that way.
Had you stopped interrupting her, your message would have gotten to her. I was even confused buy your offers.
you should have all the plans on paper so the customer can see it and think about it.
or send them a link to your web site where all plans are available to choose from. plus payment details .Most of the contractors I deal with here do that today.
would be great if everyone lived in a cookie cutter house with same system ,then everyone pays the same.you give a paper ,they throw it away or lose it.or just put it with the stack of other estimates. MP is a professional salesperson.Do not give the customer time to think or breathe. Gotta get em with your wit and charm and make them make a decision ON THE SPOT ,NOW..The "here is my card, think about it" is NOT in the MP training manual.
Hacks bring stacks
