    Mike. I live in an area that has maybe 50 residential steam boilers left over from the old days. and after almost 30 years in the trade it is so much fun for me to watch you continue to do what I started doing many years ago after finding home after home and system after system get hacked to death by techs and companies that didn't know the first thing about steam. I've been on a different side of the trade now for a decade (I'm a Regional Facilities Manager in AK ID MT OR and WA) I really enjoy watching you do your thing, Keep it up, happy to be a subscriber.

    You are correct, a drop header slows the steam and provide drier steam to system and can be used to get your 24” risers in low clearance situations.

    Gonna be honest, I’ve posted negative comments about some of the steam boilers you’ve done in the past. I have a lot of respect for you taking the extra steps to do a “better job”, not that the other ones were “wrong”. Shows that no matter how accomplished you are in the industry you can still thrive to be better instead of being stuck in your ways. I enjoyed the video.

    I find the science of the header interesting. The drop header adds inertia to the water/steam separation in the header as the water is already moving down when it hits the header. The water falls to the bottom of the pipe while the drier steam runs along the top. Also that the length of the header isn't important but the larger the pipe diameter, the better to give more separation.

    • @throttlebottle5906

      to quickly heat water with "electric" at a useable flow rate, takes a massive amount of power input, most homes do not and will never have that amount of power available, if they tried it would overload all of the power grids, from residential streets to main distribution. what that means is LOW water flow rates are needed to bring the water to a useable temperature, "trickle peeing showers and faucets" and this does not take into account trying to heat the home with it!
      for instance most USA homes now days have a 200AMP main breaker and service entrance, with the largest residential electric tankless being around 32-killowatt and 32,000watts/240volts = 134 amps of current(rounded to nearest amp), which is also equivalent to about 109,000 btu/hr. that's good for one flow limited shower and maybe hand sink being ran at once(no more than 2.2GPM (gallon per minute) and that rating relies on the cold water entering to not be too cold (fine in warm water far southern climates).
      more on the electrical aspect, you ideally don't load any breaker past 80% continuous of their ratings label, so a 200amp main breaker should be expected to run 160amps continuous and 160 -134 = 26 amps, not enough for hardly anything else to be used. NO oven/stovetop, clothes dryer, air conditioning, microwaves, well pumps, etc. without having major electrical upgrade done.
      example with the large natural gas/propane models commonly used are 200,000 to 380,000 BTU/hour input to have multi-fixture flow and endure colder inlet water temperatures. to equal that in an electric tankless, you'd need quadruple the power supplied to a home to even have enough to run other daily items and still forget running all the big appliances at once.
      that said, not all areas can supply enough natural gas/propane to run the larger size gas models either.
      I'm sure this was way too much information and kind of scrambled, I'm not a teacher for a reason. 😬

    So living in the south and only being around forced air gas furnaces, should you insulate that piping above the boiler? Wouldn't that help with heat loss in the system?

      years ago they used to insulate and seal nearly all of it with "asbestos wrap" that looked like thick cardboard from the end. lol

    Do you have to cut and thread the pipes to a custom length or do they come pre-threaded?

    • @PipeDoctor
      @PipeDoctor  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Nipples up to 6” are pre-made. Everything else we cut and thread to size

    Hey Mike, why no teflon in the low water cutoff probe? I've done it that way but never read the manual.... learn something new everyday day.

      the LWCO nipple needs to have good electrical conductivity to the metal boiler or it will not sense correctly if at all.
      while you can use tape, it needs held back some threads to allow metal to metal contact, but even then those first "X" threads could become mineral isolated from the boiler steel.
