A massive thanks to Lisa Bella Donna and Synthtopia for allowing me to use a snippet of Lisa's amazing performance. Check out the full performance here:

Bella Donna's performance features a streamlined setup of a Moog Matriarch synthesizer and effects pedals from Earthquaker Devices. But the Sonic Sorceress coaxes a huge range of sounds and moods from her rig, from ambient textures, to prog leads, to primal wails.
Bella Donna recently wrapped up a tour of Japan with Boris and has two new albums out on Bandcamp

Hey Loopop, I'm from the Future and here is a global settings software via a website a friend made. mreid.github.io/matriarch-editor/?fbclid=IwAR32sYwMnll9NVhc_N7ITBANIHSt7EVxlW15GF128MN5Jc_W-U7LS8IcmS0
I feel like your video touching on the firmware update also deserves a sticky comment here.
The Global Settings menu system was indeed a huge con to me, but I decided to pull the trigger anyway. Haven't even unboxed it yet and was already pleased to find out there are new options like a web based editor, a dedicated app, etc!
You are the Bob Ross of synths. Educational. Soothing. Hypnotic. Soothing.
so true
heard people say that a lot about cuckoo. You guys gotta decide, who is it now?
I would say Carl Sagan. Ziv will soon have "BILLIONS" of subscribers... great video as usual!
You forgot the say it's soothing
Not sure this is a compliment...
It's disturbing to watch how casually (without seemingly the slightest effort) you recall and pass on a wealth of useful information, half of which I'll need weeks to even understand, let alone remember. I'll never in a lifetime will understand sound synthesis as deeply and organically as you do, but at least I have your videos to learn from. :) Thank you.
I think it would be fair to say loopop does his homework before posting a review. Either way, he is one if the most informative, engaging reviewers.
He's very good. Of course, he edits these things and has the opportunity to prepare, review, practice, and experiment between topics. He knows what he is doing and makes excellent use of available tools and time. I like to slow his videos down sometimes.
This video is as good as it gets: Fast, no drivel, intelligent, and comprehensive. Thank you.
I just wanted to drop a line to express how much I appreciate the amazing videos you produce. I've learned more about my gear from your videos than any manual I've read, and your vids are always the first place I go when looking at gear. Well done, and thank you.
My pleasure, thanks for taking the time to write!
Thank you so much for this amazingly deep rundown of this complex instrument! I am especially grateful for those patch ideas, they all sounded so good and looked easy to implement!
By far the most comprehensive and easy to understand video I’ve seen showcasing this synth! Very musical playing, too.
Still watching all these older reviews in 2023 you are undefeated sir
This was possibly my favorite video of yours yet - so much detail, useful information and stimulating ideas. Thank you!
I've watched a number of your videos recently and just wanted to thank you for being REALLY good at what you do. You are a great teacher.
Incredible review of an incredible synth. Thank you!
Thank you for the detail and clear explanation! Even mentioning the key-bed type!!
Oh my, is it Christmas? A Matriarch review by Loopop?!
You're awesome Loopop, thanks for the video.
Your videos are always great. You and Nick are the synth review masters.
I've had so many synths over the years and nothing has got me as excited as this!
Great demonstration (as always). Sounds amazing!
I had a feeling this video would appear; I was waiting eagerly and am not disappointed! - THANK YOU!
Thank you for the most in-depth video I've ever seen! Clear, concise and captivating! I just subscribed to your channel and I look forward to seeing more of your work.
just watched this a second time after getting my matriarch. so very helpful. thank you
You're the best!! Sounds amazing, thank you for this and every other video do. So clear and thoughtful, much love X
I find myself binge watching loopop videos regardless if I will ever touch the synth in discussion. Great work 👍
Thank you for sharing this information. I own a Moog Matriarch and I'm still learning new things to create new sounds for my music compositions.
Brilliant review as always. You have no competition.
Thank you for a great video, I've been waiting for this for a long time:) And yes, please do more videos on the matriarch.
Fantastic review and patch tips! Learned some things I hadn’t considered! Bravo!
Excellent review! I wanted to know just a lil bit more about the inner-workings of the synth and this was awesome!
Insta-buy for me!!!
This synthesizer is beautiful to look at and beautiful to listen to if I had the money this thing will be sitting beside me right now
You are my go to for anything like this. Thank you for what you do.
Great video! Thank you so much! Been listening to the intro-tunes over and over again now, it's so beautiful
As someone new to semi-modular and the Matriach, this was enormously helpful. I loved the stereo delay samples and got lost in them for a while.
Thank you, I was really looking forward to this type of overview of the Matriarch. The only thing is that it doesn't make waiting any easier! ;)
loved watching your channel grow. wonderful work
This is the first time I see practical examples of cable patching modulation. These semi modular synths seem complicated. It is excellent to get ideas visually. Thanks!
Thank you for this useful and instructive video!
stunning synth and very inspiring review. thank you
Great review! As always! From 39:29 on in this review...tomorrow we place the order! Thank you!
Fantastic. Well done as always!
At 7:00 with the sync, that was one of the greatest sequences I have ever heard, it had such a smooth transition between each note with loads of character. I have heard and created myself, motion sequences which are interesting, but don't have the character of that sequence you played. Stereo filter, interesting, makes me wonder why this isn't standard on all synths, been using filters in stereo with my Roland Gaia for 7 years now.
Subscribed. I’ve recently fell into the synth pit and this is on my wish list. Thanks for a great educational video.
Your videos make me want to sell all my vintage guitars, amps and effects and go on a synth buying frenzy!! Great video and thanks for your great reviews!
Bro you give THE BEST EXPLANATIONS! Good job!!!
Excellent overview, this one is on my definite list to get. 😍
I've been waiting for this review! Can't wait to dig into this!
Ah I didn't realize this had a round robin style mode when I played with one at Moogfest. That's awesome! I used to love using that on the Mono/Poly I no longer own. Would enjoy playing with that again. Thanks for the video. Beautiful instrument.
Brand new to semi-modular synths.. Got the Matriarch just to make me learn stuff and think different. Very helpful video. Thank you.
Watched 5-6 videos from you and your content is very, very good. Informative without the bias... Joined your patreon to keep you making more videos! :-) Love your content (considering a Matriarch now) and wish you all the best in the future!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it, and it’s what makes the channel possible!
One of the best demo vid ever ! Very comprehensive, fast and perfectly recorded ! Grammoogy award !!
Super helpful, just got received this from sweetwater a few days ago,and not quite as intuitive a synth to jump in as it may seem!!!
I am in love with this machine man!
Really good review, going much further than dealer “quick demos”... Thank you...
As always, thank you for yet another fantastic and detailed review. The sound of this thing is incredible. If they come out with a 5-octave version with black faceplates, non-colored appointments and buttons, and an internal power supply vs. the dreaded wall wart, I'm definitely in.
and add chorus and reverb
Oooh been waiting for this one!
Great detailed explanations. Thanks!
Im going to pre order this, my birthday present to myself.
I think this was well explained. Also, the synth is laid out logically and it’s easy to understand.
Eeeeeeeeeeeee. Finally!!!
I’m too poor to buy any synth rn but I’m always excited when you drop a video on a synth I’m looking forward to. They’re like synthesis masterclasses. THANK YOU Loopop!!!
Buy while you are young. I bought mine last week and am 61 years old and am afraid I am going to die before I figure out how to use it. Good luck...see you in space!!!!
Continuity in innovation: Excellent Synthesizer!
Synthesis is intricate and complex in many forms, especially the ones who find it hard to understand. I am one of, to an extent. Your amazing tutorial video has made it easier to understand the fundamentals, features and concepts of the Moog Matriarch. Thank you so much.. Liked and subscribed.
One of the best synth reviews of all time. Period.
Thank you for the education. Very informative.
Great job! Has a few features in common with the Moog Opus 3, except with the Opus 3 being divide down, it could produce more than 4 notes. That being said, this offers a BOATLOAD more control and modulation options for the 4 oscillators/notes it has. The Opus is comparatively a non-starter in that department (modulation and control). Seriously like how it sounds (a LOT), though the price seems a tad steep to get that sound.
Great as usual Ziv thank you!
This seems like one of those things that are so simple yet so complex in a way that can keep you discovering for years to come.
There's something about the raw sound of this synth that is massively appealing. Doesn't need heaps of bells and whistles - the raw tone is just tasty vintage. Love it.
Great job!
Watched this video for the 4th time since its release. And I am sure I will again… A bit like talking synth with a friend. Thank you.
Nice review. As always. I've usually not aimed my synth budget this high, but as I am in the middle of selling off all the studio gear I don't use enough to merit keeping, I have been considering going for something a bit more upmarket after my bank account has been padded up a bit, and the sounds and features of the Matriarch makes it the top of my list at the moment.
Sounds great ... that round robin mode is cool.
Yet with 4 oscillators and paraphony it would be nice to have two simultaneous sequencers or sequencer and arp together, with one/two oscillators left for soloing on top of the seq/arp.
Great job, man!
Amazing tutorial, thanks!!!
Holy freaking smokes, Lisa Bella Donna KILLING it at the end!
She's an actual wizard
Yup, saw her live a few months back, she is a Synth Goddess.
I've been waiting for this! Now let's sit and watch, questions later ;)
Wonderful review, thanks a lot for doing this! The one obvious question is how that compares to the Grandmother? Apart from the reverb/delay of course, would you say that you can obtain the same sounds out of a Matriarch as of a Grandmother? In other words, would you consider the Matriarch as a Grandmother++? What would be in your opinion the main difference between the two, or maybe they should just be considered different synths altogether? Bonus points if you do a video comparison ;)
Apart from the reverb I can't think if something Grandmother can do that Matriarch can't other than be smaller. Considering a video I'm just thinking what I would say in it except that ;)
Best Matriarch overview video on YT. Thanks!
Thank you for your great reviews of synths and explanations. I like not only the great in-depth-review and sound examples, but also the good explanations and specific hints you give to tweak these synths. Also the timeline on the left side of your video is very helpful to look up something later again. Have you ever though of publishing something like a patching tutorial on YT? I'm sure that your creative mind can bring up many patching ideas, I would never think of, especially when connecting/patching different instruments (Matriarch, Mother 32).
Thanks for the kind words! I often add patch ideas in videos, and, [self-promotion warning...] all my tips are organized in my book and added when I come up with new ones
Ive watched this twenty times.. thank you!
Fantastic tuition !!!
Thanks loopop, great vid bud
I just got this synth last night and I am in love with it.
moog have been listening to the pauper. nice one. looking forward to the day! x
@sbmphr I absolutely do agree. But you're talking moog. That's like looking at a Rolls you know you'll never own. Then one day they bring out a model that, although still pricey, encourages thinking along the lines of budgets and saving, and being able to buy that moog that has the capabilities that can emulate the priciest of models available. In other words, a rolls that, can perform almost the same as the best model but, under the bonnet there are lesser components and factors that make it the best model but still offer an incentive that give hope of one day, unboxing! x
Loopop synth videos are the best on the internet. I pretty much only seek info from others if loopop hasn't gotten there yet
OMG, I love ALL your videos, but as somewhat of an experienced synth dude, this one sold me on the matriarch. Darn, looking for loose change now. 👍
I've never been more than passingly interested in Moog synths because of their price, and I foolishly came into this video thinking "I know I'm not missing anything, but let's see what it does for fun". Your video convinced me to at least consider a Moog, so you've done what no one else has been able to do so far. Very well done, and great video, as always. :)
Great review.🌷
So many great ideas!
Excellent review! As a Grandmother user I was wondering how the Matriarch differed from the Granny, outside of being 4-voice paraphonic. Your review really helped me understand that this is a unique synth with some really cool features. I guess I'll start throwing pocket change in the jar every day for my "Matriarch Fund"......
This thing is absolutely fantastic, sounds so good...
Brilliant video thanks!
Wow! This video is amazing!
It took awhile; and is actually a bit early (an unexpected store credit as a result of a refund due to COVID shipping challenges/manufacturing delays cause an then unexpected purchase) but I had enough saved up and a lovely Matriarch is on its way to me this or next week hopefully!
Kudos to your videos as always Ziv, I come back to this one and the patching one every now and then just for enjoyment and learning :)
Whell god damn those are some god damn nice sounding oscillators and the delay doesn’t hurt.
Just got mines a few days ago. It’s possibly the most exploratory synthesizer I’ve ever gotten to play. If you’re tilted enough, it’s a workhorse on all dream odyssey adventures you’d want to take.
Thanks! Great tutorial!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks!
Yes please, I would like to hear a video from you on suggestions of modules to pair with the Matriarch. Ideally with a little bit on starting a small set-up to do it if you don’t have a euro rack system to begin with. :-)
As a Grandmother user who will almost certainly buy the Matriarch as well, would love to see ideas on how to integrate--and why to get and keep both.
I am left feeling highly entertained
Awesome, I'm truly mesmerized. This tutorial is helpful and inspiring on so many levels.
While I'm quite familiar w/subtractive synthesis from my Sequential PROPHET 10, I am stunned by all those out-of-the-box patching tipps that change the basic wonderful Moog sound in a characterful if not weird yet musical way.
Just ordered my MATRIARCH because it complements the PROPHET so nicely and I'm very much looking forward to try out all those great ideas from your demo.
While being crystal clear, on point, and always understandable, this master class is also so condensed that I will be coming back to it surely more than a couple of times to learn and grasp it all in more depth.
With your vid, I will need the manual only to solve the global settings riddles. LOL…
Thanks a lot.
Keep on groovin'!
P.S.: I would love to see a PROPHET rev4 tutorial by you - to see what you do with that beloved intriguing Poly Mod feature!
Very nice piece of kit
Yes more with eurorack modules and the Matriarch please!
Bro the sound at the beginning does something to my soul
great video! great patching ideas. You're such a synth boss ^_^
