Behringer went from "ew its a behringer product" to "here's my wallet, just take it". They saw a giant gap in the market, people *still* want to buy classic synthesizers but almost nobody was making them anymore. And now instead of having to rely on re-sale and rarity based inflation prices, we've got an amazing company that makes great synthesizers for what they're actually worth. I love my Poly D, it's such a versatile instrument, I was so happy when I saw the price was under $1000.
Even better when it went on sale for $500 for Black Friday.
Hey, I just wanted to leave a link to a video here. Everyone loves to crap on Behringer for copying other designs (although I think in the case of the Keystep they maybe went a little too far) and for Uli being a jerk or whatever, but rarely do they get praise for when they do the right thing. Benn Jordan made a video calling out Behringer and Uli in particular about some synths that they were supposed to donate. Well, after some time, he finally got an answer:
czcams.com/video/a9pA5SS5DhY/video.html
And yeah, Behringer is doing a great job of making some cool synths. They may be inexpensive reissues, but their engineers are CLEARLY doing a lot of work to nail the sounds, and every single one that I've bought both sounds and works great, and does a great job of capturing the sound of the original. I do like original ideas and original synths, and I think the Deepmind is a good synth but of course it doesn't get any attention because 1. it's made by Behringer and 2. it's not a copy of anything. Everyone wants to complain when they copy but when they make an original product, everyone ignores it. Shame.
Anyway, my point was to link to Benn's video to help give them the credit they deserve, at least in this particular instance.
I have, stowed away in a closet, a MiniMoog. I bought it about 35 years ago at Rogue Music in New York; I'd traded in a Roland SH101 for it. It wasn't particularly in the utmost best shape even then; the store gave a bit of a break on it because a previous owner stained its wood a very dark shade. Anyway, I've considered having a "diagnostic" done on it, and having the m'moog brought up to decency (the power cord is cracked)... however with the Poly D I've been playing for about a year by now, I haven't really thought much about the moog lately. The Behringer provides all I love about a MiniMoog... PLUS...! Eventually I'll probably get the Moog improved.
Lol right!
@null keep telling yourself that to justify spending moog prices instead of behringer prices
Good thing Behringer eased us into this.. would have been WAY too much to comprehend in 2015.
youre right. i would have gone in to an unresponsive state
Behringer, maker of shite guitar pedals, putting out a beautiful Model D polysynth?
*faints*
Edit: Yes, several of you have mentioned that their Tube Screamer clone is spot- on. I listened to their samples, and I kind of want one now!
Kernel Kraken actually, check out the JHS video on their pedals, they seem to be putting out some epic clones there as well!
@@CommissionerManu And their sister Klark Technic are absolutely killing the clone market too with their LA2, 1176, and Pultec.
@@CommissionerManu They're just built crappily, but they're pretty good otherwise. One of their other sister companies is TC Electronic btw. Wish Behringer would make a good multi FX unit with headphone out...
Really appreciate the detail you go into for this one. Noise modulation at the end was class :)
I'm still struggling with the idea of this synth even existing and you go and upload a review. What a time to be alive
Really thorough - and fair - analysis of the POLY D.
Got mine 2 Weeks ago and I just can't stop playing it...the Poly is my first Synth which gives me Feelings and stuff....damn 🔥
There's another reason for having both ramp and sawtooth on Osc 4 aside from the obvious modulation use! You can emulate pulse width modulation by combining a ramp from one oscillator and a saw from another. The interference between them produces PWM that cycles from 0% through to 100% continuously at a rate defined by their relative tuning (i.e. it happens at the rate of the "beating").
So freaking cool
Whoa whoa whoa, how in hell can I achieve this on the Poly D again?
@@fugamante1539 Set one oscillator to saw and one to ramp, mix them at equal volumes, the amount of detuning controls the PWM speed (tune them close for slow PWM, the more detuned they are the faster the modulation).
The two reviews I’m most interested in on CZcams are Loopop and Sonic State, and they both put reviews up today!
Got mine today. And this video is going to be my PolyD Bible. Very useful since the manual is so basic and does not explain that much. I am inmensely grateful for this video, because it helps me to understand the Synth.
@@dekzan You're asking if an analog synth that uses physical dials stores presets?
I just ordered one of these and your video is PERFECT at explaining how it works, thank you!
The best filter envelope explanation ever. You really are an exceptional communicator. Seems like you have a sixth sense and a kind of empathy to put your self in the place of noob viewers/alumni.
Great demo...best so far thatI've seen - I still so want one.
You have the best reviews hands down when it comes to synths. I don't think people know the work behind all that you really do here, yet make all the videos straightforward and your very systematic with all you do, which is part of the charm of all you videos and you have thousands of hours into all you do. Thanks for helping me with seeing what gear will work best for me. I started watching you last year and I've already sent others your way. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to write!
Thank you for this. More than just a review, this was also a great intro lesson to noobs like myself who want to get into synths. Keep up the awesome work!
this sounds amazing, I like how LFO rate is conveniently placed right next to mod wheel, I play with this a lot on my Model D
I’ve had this synth for a couple of months. I keep coming back to this vid and learning new things. Thank you so much for this video bro. Much love 🙏🤘🙂
same here!
Sounds absolutely lush! I could imagine making a whole album with just this, love the sound
😮
This is easily one of the best reviews I've ever seen!
Your videos are really great! excellent image and sound quality, with thorough explanations at a nice pace and tone! thank you very much for your work!!!
Loved the review and the learning opportunity! As someone new to synths, I really get a lot out of your videos and the Patreon PDF. Thank you for publishing this. I recently bought Behringer POLY D to go along with the other Moog synths that I own, and you have already opened some new areas for me. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for taking the time to write and join my Patreon!
This is a lovely sounding synth. The Chorus is so nice
Sound + Looks of this thing = insane
Fantastic work, again! I love, love, this synth; this video opens a lot of time-saving saving doors and is sincerely appreciated.
Excellent review as usual - really like the sound and it looks gorgeous!
So kind of a Minimoog + Korg Mono/Poly + Roland Juno chorus?

Another wonderful presentation and mini tutorial. Thank you, Sensei.
Love your systematic approach!
I guess „to loopop“ will become synonymous for quick and comprehensive gear reviewing, such as “google something” did for searching the web 😀 I am not going to buy any new gear if I haven’t loopopped it first. Great reviews, very informative, yet entertaining, cheers!
More like gear advertising and thorough overviews.
Best and most helpful demo of this in existence. Thank you
That intro and outro patch is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks very much!
The Poly D is a giant. Just love it! Even the onboard chorus is stellar! I’m glad it’s accessible in price as well. No brainer! Great video Loopop! 🎉👌🥁😄🍀
Very good explaining of the Poly D, I always wanted a MiniMoog but could never afford one, but when I saw the Behringer Poly D for a 4th of the price I had to get me one and I just got it!!
YEAHHHH Loopop. I def needed a 35:20 second break today. You rule!!!!!
Thanks airing and sharing the outstanding informative video.Endeavors are unmatched. Bliss
Would love to see an in depth tutorial on something like omnisphere. The way you explain things is very easy to understand and makes everything finally make sense. Would be happy to donate as well for something like that!
I've been waiting for your review for this baby. Thank you for speeding up your process to review. Keep the spirit.
Really great in-depth, and honest, video.
Thank you, loopop! This was very helpful
When do the BoogerFoogers arrive?
for real... some dirt cheap nice analog effects please

And here I was, feeling perfectly content with my current synth setup, not even desiring additional eurorack modules (!!) ... and then this comes out lol. Great video, as ever!
Ben Asaro so whats your current setup?
nice overview. both good to watch before and after buying the synth . learned a lot about the back panel inputs , thanks :)
Thank you for your review. This looks quite awesome. Bless You Sir!
About one hundred and fifty of your views are from me, man. This is a great video. I have learned more about synthesizers from you in your 20-minute video than I have from years of noodling. Thanks, dude. This is helping out with my soft synths and my Prophet as well. This Poly D is such a better learning tool than those complex polyphonic jokers.
A lot of sensitive synths would get seriously out of tune from being called "complex polyphonic jokers."
Amazing overview, thanks! They should include this in the online manual ;)
Thank you. Really tempted to pick up one of these. Yours was the best video covering all the features. Thank you
I’m very glad for this review. Behringer has yet to come out with a full manual, they only released a quick start guide that is not that great. I keep coming back to this video to figure out the Sequencer and Arp functions.

I love the concept of taking the original and just improving upon it...
Want so bad.
@loopop thank you for this review... you are professional, friendly-talking and your passion cames out from the vid! I will buy this one as my first analog synth (rompler/va user here lol) after seeing your review and having all my eventual questions answered. Keep up the good work.
Synthly yours.

I bought this when it came out and used it a bit then not. Your video helped me really understand it, thanks.
very thorough review ... gave me a good sense of this synth thanks
This man is lucky. I wish I could have my hands on this synth already O.o
Great review. Paraphonic explained so clearly.
Great demo! Very thorough and well presented.
Am i the only one that keeps hearing Pauly D?
I heard Paula D which was really a wild thing to keep hearing
And?
@@mannyzagri7451 Bla bla bla bla
Yeah, but then I think it ought to be called "parody", because it is paraphonic.
Thanks, can't be unheard.
Behringer is really starting to come into their own here. It's not just a clone anymore, it's a mashup of clones that truly captures the spirit of our times!
Thanks for a very informative + clear review/demo.
After watching your video for the fourth time I purchased a Poly-D from Sweetwater. They said it will ship in mid-June. (updated on-April 29, Sweetwater shipped two months ahead of projected date!!!!) excellent. Should be here soon!!
Love how it has some matrixbrute dna too, folding up and controller lanes on the rear
I thought the same
I mean... Didn't the original Minimoog D fold up as well? If we're going for "DNA" that would feel like the more obvious comparison
Uuhhhhh nope. Original Moog Model D that this is based on had it before the Matrixbrute. Also Moog Voyager.
Luke Moll thank you, folks can be so dense. It literally is based on the Moog Model D.
you can easily tell when someone's been into this for like 5 minutes.
Your video is the best for learning about the Poly D in short time - Thank you for that.
For me the biggest disadvantage is :
If we leave a three-part chord lying there and play a bass run, then each individually played note triggers the entire chord again and again, as if we had struck it again. It can get annoying. One or more keystrokes (gate) can only trigger one envelope again and again (i.e. it starts again) or start at the envelope curve at which it is currently located.
This can be annoying in poly mode if you play runs and melodies legato and two tones are triggered when changing from one tone to the other. Of course, this effect is less pronounced if the influence of the envelope z. B. the filter is not as strong or the cutoff frequency is quite wide open.
Great comment. However, we don't normally use "z. B." in English!
@@NuisanceMan Sorry. In English it means "for example".
Brilliant, using this to learn mine thank you.
Amazing tutorial wish I found it sooner lol I almost returned it because I couldn’t figure out the poly and unison modes. Thank you!
Oh my god this is all I have ever wanted in a synth. And I can afford it.
I was looking for a realistic mg1 for my daughter to get that moog sound, this synth is hands down everything i wanted and so much more plus being in the same price range as a 38 year old board. An absolute no brainer
Thank you for the comprhensively clarifying review!!!
best tutorial on you tube for this synth
Behringer surprise me almost everyday those past weeks with all those great synths. I have a suggestion for a future video, it could be interesting to see a video by Loopop on the Folktek Mescaline, it's a very different synth from what we're used to hear and I wonder what could be your point of view on this outer space gear. By the way Thank you for all this good videos you share
those microcables look like massive pain in the ass
@@dnch Speaking from experience, I own a Volca Modular and the only time they're annoying is trying to patch stuff when there isn't much light to help me see where I'm plugging them in, in which case it's easy to slide it into the outer border of the breadboard segment, rather than inside one of the ports. Other than that, I find it enjoyable as I imagined Eurorack would be. Which I've never used btw, outside an hour or 2 of VCV Rack.
When using the round robin mode, can you "bypass" the arpeggiator by turning it to its slowest setting and playing the separate oscillators by hand similarly to Mono/Poly?
Incredibly informative, thank you
Thank you very much for another excellent review and insight!
I Patreoned! This channel is a Gold mine.
Thanks - much appreciated!
I agree, me too!
ninpomaniac much appreciated!!!
Thanks for another well done and informative review. One question, can you sync the LFO to an external clock source?
Angelstar Scotland - 2nd that. I’m assuming no, as now.
Not to my knowledge
My go to refresher video !
Yeah I'm definitely getting this one.
I think it is going to sell out soooo fast, it really sounds excellent, warm & spacey! I love it! Looking forward to it :)
This or the Matriarch? Which one for you Rik?
@sbmphr I'm keeping my Model D to link with this. Imagine that kind of power! LOL
sbmphr but if you can polychain, I’m buying more MoDs.
@@RoomAtTheTopStudio I love this price on the POLY D, but the Matriarch is bigger, has the funky colors I LOVE from the Grandmother.. If I could swing the price of the Matriarch I'd do it but the POLY D is more realistic
@@SynthgodXXX same thing I'm thinking but the wood encasement of the Poly D kinda has me over the Matriarch. Don't get me wrong, I love the Matriarch but the sound and the look of the Poly D really is giving Moog a run for their money quite literally
Memories had been nice, but this offers alot.
Super Review! Thanks, man!
Thank you for that!! Great job and it totally helped me decide to get one.
Same here
Excellent review, quite nice thanks. 👍
Would like to see a Model D vs Poly D comparison. Hear if there are any significant differences in the way the oscillators sound. Great work btw keep it up 👊🏽
I saw the Behringer Model D desktop with controller keys being compared to a real Moog in some video around here and it does very well.
theres a huge difference yes, they are different synths yes, they only have the letter "D" in common really
Why?
What a great review again. As always, it's a fantastic overview.
The only addition that I might value, would be an arrow on the left, indicating the current chapter. That way navigating through the video would be easier.
Still one of best reviewers on CZcams though. Thanks!
Btw, whats that Plugin/VST, used to visualize the waveform?
brilliant tutorial, of poly d and also about analog synth ... thank you very much ....
cant wait to get mine and make some classic gfunk beats
Round Robin poly-mode on the Arpeggiator eh? Well I'm saying : Behringer MonoPoly confirmed !
I have been hating myself for decades because I sold my Korg Mono/Poly and they now fetch $1500 to $2000. The first time I saw a video of this Poly D I was in tears. It's the answer I needed. I understand this board is going to hit the streets at $699 USD. I bought their model D when it came out and love it. I can't wait to get my hands on this Poly D soon!
It actually is! They recently registered the name "monopoly" which clearly implies something
When I saw this this morning I thought, weird, a Monopoly that looks like a Minimoog, but its missing the cross modulation and chord memory. Maybe they might reserve it for a Monopoly copy. I hope so.
@@pvillez No Ring Modulation either. I'll be a little mad if I buy this and they roll out a full Mono/Poly clone. LOL
Take it easy, you all can afford BOTH this and the Mono/Poly-clone when it arrives! 😄
I'm considering selling my Oberheim M12 to buy ALL the Behringer clones in the future!
Just joking, will NEVER EVER happen!😂
What a great demo! Id LOVE to own this next to my Model D...
Flex
Thanks a lot as usual man. I would fully enjoy this, I was about to get the moog grandmother... so stuck
This looks sick!
This looks like a great, affordable, polysynth.
Enough with the mono (duo/paraphonic) synths Behringer, give us that poly UB-Xa you've been hinting at for over a year now. I admit this is a breath of fresh air and I appreciate that this synth isn't a clone, but more like a mutation between a Moog Model D and maybe the Matriarch, but please put out some poly synths Behringer.
Sorry for the rant. ;)
Great review as usual. Your reviews have cost my wallet a lot the past couple years, LOL, but you sure cover damn near every feature with well explained examples. I wonder how youtube reviewers like yourself would have done with gear back in the day. Now there's a video series of something I'd like to see. Reviews of classic synths like a Prophet 5, Oberheim OB-X, Jupiter 8, DX-7 but given in the perspective like it's a "new" product. Features, sounds, Pros and Cons, the works. I know there are overviews of classic synths, but you do such a good job describing synths it would be interesting for sure!
AND the CS-80 clone --, Please, Please, PLEASE !!
Thanks for this awesome video! I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel. Keep it up :)
Man I have learned so much from your channel. Thank you thank you thank you!
That chorus is spot on from the Juno series.
Makes me wonder when are the Junos coming from Behringer!
@@helder-luis That was the original thinking behind - what eventually became DeepMind.
@@helder-luis DeepMind is essentially a better, more powerful Juno. I'm hoping the Poly D will be equal as superior
@@Richard_P_James Do they sound like a Juno 60?
@@lordundhimself1310 Do they sound any good? As good as a Juno 60?
The music during the closing credits sold me. Yes, I have a Model D- but no chord capability. Love the round robin arpeggiator idea. Any idea how many notes out on the keybed via MIDI? When in mono or unison mode, is the MIDI out also changing or is it still poly? Thinking interesting applications of the other Behringer mono synths in poly-chain.
Thanks! MIDI out will send as many notes as you can press regardless of polyphony mode
A Model D AND a Poly D? You're the man!
This channel + Behringer reissues= I stepped into the synth world!
Super educational. Thanks!
Loopop another great tutorial! But did you actually just apologize to a modulator because you told him an oscillator was better?
Preset memory in addition to the polyphony would really ascend this to a whole other level than the orginal Model D... Also I would love to hear this thing running through a Roland RE-201 Space Echo
Maybe next year they will release a Space Echo clone too!
Zaffro Lumpkins EFFECTS can be added during mixdown via DAW.
If you want preset memory then you need motorised pots or a completely diferent interface. Not gonna happen
@Loopop Thank you for the excellent tutorials and reviews. Your teaching style, and level of knowledge are un-matched anywhere else on CZcams. I bought a Behringer Neutron based on your review and demonstration.
Ahhh, yet another Behringer-loopop combo :D
