  • How Nobukazu Kuriki Lost 9 Fingers But Kept Climbing To His Death
Imagine pursuing your dream of mountaineering even after losing nine fingers. Would this be an act of courage or foolishness? On May 21, 2018, a Japanese mountaineer lost his life while attempting to climb Mount Everest's Southwest face. Remarkably, this was his sixth try to conquer the world's highest peak after losing nine fingers. He was ascending the mountain alone, relying on just one finger and no oxygen. Some might see his determination to reach the Summit admirable, while others might criticize his recklessness. Let's run through the events that led to this tragic incident in this video.

Kuriki was bent on sabotaging his own goals. His insistence on not using supplemental oxygen on 8000m mountains increased the risk of frostbite. Failure to give himself enough time to acclimate also increased risk of altitude sickness. He proved he could successfully climb many of the seven summits. He also summited four other 8000m peaks (Broad Peak, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri). I think he had the ability to summit Everest with oxygen & Sherpa assistance. Many with less experience or ability have.

Reminds me of David Sharp. Easily good enough to climb Everest with supplemental oxygen and sherpa assistance but he wanted to climb it alpine style as well which is far, far harder. 99% of people who summit wouldn't have a hope in hell of summiting without oxygen and minimal to zero support.
David was a capable climber and wouldn't have been in the death zone for 26 hrs with oxygen and sherpa support. He wouldn't have died in Green Boots cave either. That much is certain.

@Jimbo8012 I couldn't remember his name, but you're exactly right. Then they tried to fault other climbers for not helping him enough.

Supplemental oxygen has nothing to do with preventing frostbite. Kuriki was hellbent on proving the world what he is not. IF only he abandon Everest and just climb smaller mountains other than K2 and Everest.... he might just saved his face instead of dead on mountain slope.

@bensadikin9513 Why would you say supplemental oxygen has nothing to do with preventing frostbite (especially on 8000m mountains), when you could have easily checked & found that it does!. Dr. Monica Piris has made over 25 Himalayan trips as an expedition doctor, 21 were 8000m mountains & 16 of those were to Everest Base Camp ( Source: Uphill Athlete, June 20, 2022). Specifically, Google her and check EXPLORERSWEB article, "An Everest Doctor on Frostbite: What it is, How to Avoid It, How to Treat It" (March 31, 2023).

@@aka0.. - Well, that's an insightful response Aka. I think what Donna said is entirely responsible.
All rationality went out of the window for Kuriki. Summit fever is a very similar feeling to addiction. It's impossible to think objectively when you're deep in it. If you'd ever had an addiction, you'd understand this.
If Kuriki had climbed Everest with supplemental oxygen and sherpa assistance, he'd still be alive.

there have been body builders who where told they where gonna die....they competed KNOWING they had 0% chance to win....but to them their dream was to be on that stage and they died chasing those dreams...most of us will never hold that amount of desire to achieve something.
are your goals more important than your next breath? only a select % will do everything it takes to achieve their dream regardless of outcome.

Hey was 100% delusional. There's determination and the there is foolish ignorance if reality, the facts, and most of all his limitations physically and mentally. He couldn't get everest on a easy route whole so the never been done with no fingers and no oxygen? He went to die on the mountain. He had 0% chance of success.
