  • Who would have thought 10 years ago that you could buy a car that will do 0-100 in under 4 seconds for under $70,000. The 2024 BYD Seal Performance represents incredible value for money when you consider the performance equation. Even at the entry level, it's affordable for what it is. Paul Maric reviews the latest electric sedan from China.

      Inline with the fake reviews made from Chinese? 🤦‍♂️ If you did any research and had commonsense you’ll find Chinese manufacturers have the lowest quality control. I saw a BYD Liverpool mall in a Sydney last week and it looked cheap and the door handle had broken off even. There’s numerous online complaints and videos of these cars rusting prematurely and catching fire overseas.

  • @dingbatt
    @dingbatt Před 5 měsíci +11

    The most comprehensive and best review of the Seal I have seen yet.
    Haven’t driven one, but have sat in and played with the infotainment, etc. The interior seems more premium than my Model 3. The seats are just as comfortable, it has better ventilation/hvac, a driver’s display and hud, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, indicator stalk, real leather seats (ventilated as well as heated) and just a few more physical buttons. The displays are lower resolution than the Tesla and the likes of BMW and Mercedes and are perhaps the only thing that reduces the premium feel of the interior.
    The boot is probably the biggest compromise. My M3 boot is probably my second biggest ‘pinch point’ (the first being no driver’s display). The Seal boot is smaller still. There is less storage considering boot (including underfloor) and “frunk”. I believe BYD missed a trick by slavishly copying (ahem, I mean taking inspiration from) the Model 3 and not making this a liftback. Still, if practicality is the main goal, then the Seal U will be better, in the same way that the Model Y is more practical than the 3.
    Here in NZ, I believe the version of the Seal that will sell the best is the big battery, single motor “premium”. Apart from the extra motor and dampers (hence better performance) that the “Performance” Seal has, the Premium only misses out on a heated steering wheel and electronic child locks, but gains 50km of WLTP range.
    According to the BYD salesman, the active safety features can be changed to “nag only” (my terminology) rather than mechanical intervention. Whether that is something that has to be set every time is yet to be determined. Certainly here in NZ, BYD seem more receptive to making tweaks after customer feedback than other manufacturers.
    Just too much is absent or has been removed from the new Model 3 for me to consider it as an upgrade (driver’s display, blind spot monitoring, USS, radar, passenger lumbar support, indicator and gear selector stalks. So the Seal now becomes the front runner.

    The BYD has a 3kw V2L capability. (Vehicle to Load) So it can power your house (3kw output will power your fridge+freezer+TV easily) in a grid down or you can charge solar batteries if already off grid (when you get a few low solar days in row). Thanks for the review. I’ve had my Seal Premium for 4 weeks and driven about 2,500km. It’s a great car and the only additional criticism would be the traffic speed sign accuracy. That’s an additional thing I turn off because it gets it wrong too often. And beeps! If it just flashed the sign then that’d be adequate.
    The major issue though is that these safety settings don’t persist. You have to change them every time. This isn’t limited to the Seal. It’s across the board and ANCAP will be used as an excuse. Personal driver preferences need to be honoured though, and auto makers need to recognise this.

      I also have a Premium on order. Actually, it has just arrived in Hobart, but I want to drive the Performance AND the Premium before committing. I've also driven the Tesla M3 Highland RWD which is ~4k more than the Premium and only around 5.5k less than the Performance AWD, so even though I was quite impressed with the M3, other than no stalks, no drivers display and no HUD, both of the BYD Seal version would have to be noticeably inferior to the M3 for me to choose the Tesla. Still, at this stage I haven't ruled out any of the 3 potentials YET! I really don't need the power of the Performance (who REALLY does?) but gee the Premium RWD will have to be noticeably inferior. But, not ruling out the Performance just yet. 🙂 Heart vs mind stuff as usual.

      @@Paul-ow9ddas someone who just got delivery of the Premium, I will say that it is not as punchy off the line as I expected for 5.9s. Reviews mention it as well as an intentional choice to dull the initial take off, it is extremely smooth and you gain speed quickly - but you don’t get shoved into your seat on take off like you might in a Model 3 or idk how the Performance model might be as well. Perfect car other than the annoying speed sign alert and aggressive behaviour around lane marking - which of all attributes with the car should be easily resolved with software updates.

    I have a brand new white AWD Seal. In response to the question about rotating the screen. I rotate the infotainment screen to portrait when using the Sat Nav (GPS) so it gives a look a little bit more view further into the journey. The acceleration on this car is like a roller coaster although the fuel consumption when driving normally is not good as the E-Niro I had before it. I looked at the BMW and Merc options at this price and they were two years old with only one year of warranty left. This means that if anything went wrong the costs would be big bucks. The BYD has six years warranty on the car and eight on the battery. I used to live in BNE and met the shadow transport minister a few years ago and asked why his party were not promoting this technology. His honest answer (I will stand up in court about this!) was they will never take off in Australia as they were driven by "poofters" !!!!! This technology is worrying governments, hence the US are interesting an 100% import tariff on new Chinese cars. This denies the masses cheap non polluting cars. I like having the option. Horizontal is better for me but there are people who prefer portrait, so even if you only rotate it once, it's worth it. Only issue is Android Auto/Caplay only work in horizontal mode, as do a couple of other apps, which is absurd.

    Thanks for the review Paul. I test drove the Model 3 Highland, Seal Performance and Polestar 2, back to back today. I was hugely disappointed by the Polestar 2, far inferior and ridiculously expensive for what you get. I had seen so many glowing reviews on the Polestar 2 but my own personal assessment is that it is way overrated. I have a current model 3 and I didn't think the Highland was much different, other than better suspension (which is compromised by very soft tyres anyway) - and of course missing stalks. The winner was the Seal for my purposes and will pick up tomorrow. Much quieter than the other two cars. Despite reviewers claiming that the Highland is much quieter then the old model 3, I don't think it is (at least compared to made in china Model 3s). The only downsides to the Seal is the poorly calibrated lane keeping assistance, but I am hoping they will eventually improve this with a software update. I also prefer the one pedal driving in the Tesla, but again maybe they will add it to the Seal via a software update. That said, the Polestar has one pedal driving, but it was horrible in comparison to the smoothness of the Tesla, you are better off with it disabled in the Polestar anyway. The Tesla is also best in class for efficiency. But you have to keep all this in perspective, because the Seal will always be much cheaper to "refuel" compared to similar performing petrol cars.

      @@OhItsDad who cares? topic was interior quality, not speed. Learn 2 read. If you want speed above all, go get a McMurtry Speirling. It'll do 0-60 in 1.4 seconds and corners better than a Formula-1.
      Also, since you asked, Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV 3.1 seconds, Mercedes-AMG EQS 3.0 seconds, Mercedes-AMG EQE53 2.8 seconds

    28:45 - Just to correct a common mistake
    LFP (Lithium Ferro Phosphate / Lithium Iron Phosphate) are also still Lithium-Ion batteries. LFP refers to the battery chemistry. Lithium-Ion refers to the way charge is carried through the battery, Lithium Ion batteries use positively charged Lithium Ions to move the charge back and forth from anode to cathode, LFP batteries use this method.

    • @remakeit2628
      @remakeit2628 Před 5 měsíci

      It's LFP versus "ternary lithium" where the "ternary" of a ternary lithium battery refers to a polymer containing three metal elements (= nickel, cobalt, manganese or aluminum) which is used as the positive electrode.
      Meanwhile LFP batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the cathode material, where the "PO" bond is very stable and difficult to decompose. LFP batteries are not prone to structural collapse or heat generation nor form strong oxidizing substances at high temperatures or upon overcharge or damage, thus providing enhanced safety over ternary lithium batteries.

    Question:
    Is the dyn audio system as good as the ones in VW ?
    Also, Vw Golf R can do the same performance numbers and almost cost the same price and a good build quality . Any reason to chose this over a R apart from being an EV?
