I took the plunge and leased a BYD Atto 3 this year. I honestly have to say I haven't ever owned a better put together car. Previous cars in the household have been Honda Civic and CRV, VW Golf and Subaru XV. In all of them I found something not right in the assembly, or they were recalled for faults. So far I cannot fault the BYD, except for the OEM choice of tyres which haven't performed so well in wet weather (will be swapping to either Michelin or Continental soon.). I can honestly say old school car manufacturers have a BIG problem in front of them as BYD is pumping out a quality product at a very reasonable price point.

A year or so ago when BYD and GWM came to Brazil, I was very twisting noses to it, but these brands do not sell the same cars worldwide, they do their localization task, they modify their vehicles to the countries roads, taste and needs, so they became best sellers so fast, construction of the car is great, driveability is good, tecnology and power that you would need at least double the money to get the same stuff from traditional brands. There are simply no competition, in my family everybody is buying these cars, they are a real deal.

Well, perhaps "pathetic" is too much of a strong word, but I get what you mean.

There have been some trials with car manufacturing in Brazil... the most famous which ALMOST worded out (I guess) was the Gurgel from the 1970's.
There always are strong efforts/powers always trying to prevent development... the home elite and multinationals which never want to lose. Petrobras took the life of our perhaps most important president ever; Getúlio Vargas in order to become reality.
Our new president Lula (elected one year ago) is making huge investments in order to re-industrialize Brazil.

the editor of the video seems to suggest BYD's rise is due to cheap prices and government subsidies. well, they overlooked the fact that Tesla also enjoys tax compensation or subsidies from Chinese government. In this regard, they're treated equally in China. So the rest of it is just their market strategy and products charm.

You do realise Chinas own internal decisions don't change the fact that in the west neither brand is subsidized, and due to this BYD's cost almost as much as some older teslas. They are way too expensive for a chinese made car, and are only being bought by rental companies so they can rent them out to chinese tourists for cheap

BYD cars in China are much much cheaper than in foreign markets, The reason why BYD Automobile has a cost advantage is due to China's huge economies of scale, fierce market competition, and efficient manufacturing indsutries as a whole, not just BYD, VW also much cheaper in China than in Europe.

Yes a lot of people forget that when Musk bought Tesla (hopefully everyone knows he didn't start the company?) he never dreamed he'd be this successful. His goal was to make EV's glamorous and desirable enough to create a wave of consumer interest that would force governments and the legacy auto industry (which having been in cahoots with the fossil fuel industry from the start tended to scuttle or downplay any and all attempts at alternate technology - they even opposed unleaded fuel if anyone is old enough to remember) to start the move away from oil. That's why he did things like put a Tesla Roadster in space and create Ludicrous Mode in the Type S. To get people talking. And he has succeeded, EVs have always existed, I remember milk delivery vans in England in the 80s were battery powered, he made them sexy and mainstream. That is what the world owes Musk.
But I have never liked EVs as a concept. 90% of a car's operating pollution is not exhaust emissions, it is tyre and brake dust and others such things which are exactly the same for an EV as for ICE (worse for EVs in some cases because they are so much heavier and consume tyres and brakes faster). So you are only reducing 10% by switching to EV. Meanwhile the effort and expense of building additional electric generation and distribution has been eye-watering and finally the heavy earths and metals used in EVs are far worse than fossil fuels in terms of the environmental costs of extracting, tranporting and processing them.
Japan interestingly carefully evaluated both electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell and they chose to go with hydrogen as a true future vehicle propulsion technology. But Musk's success at promoting EVs started a snowball effect especially in terms of the regulatory landscape around the world which made it more and more unlikely that hydrogen would be able to catch up or to compete. And that is a crying shame. So many times the lesser technology has won over the better in the market. Like Betamax and VHS in the video-cassette days and this is another example. However I think hydrogen is making a slight come-back, especially as they have now cracked how to make hydrogen fuel less expensive and more environmentally friendly at the production stage (look up Blue and Green Hydrogen). There are still challenges about distribution but instead of needing to to build new infrastructure from scratch a lot of it can be managed by upgrading and converting existing infrastructure like gas pipelines, storage and distribution. It's going to be interesting how things go. I'm rooting for hydrogen and I will hold on to ICE for as long as I can until then.

BYD has a promising future. It's a little misleading though counting hybrid cars as EV. I think they will be able to scale and have acceptable profits while selling massive volumes and helping greatly to transition the world away from ICE. The big key is that BYD will have to innovate and drive costs of their pure EV's down because their current pure EV's are still a negative margin and not profitable yet. I think BYD has the right tools to do this but it's going to be a race against time and certainly not easy.

Great reportage! I believe one of the key advantages of BYD is its focus on electric batteries as the foundation for their cars. Warren Buffett's investment in a company with such a cost advantage compared to other global automobile manufacturers, both in the USA and worldwide, seems like a smart move. However, it's crucial for Buffett to exercise caution due to the geopolitical tensions between the USA and China. The communist dictatorship in China may pose a risk to external investments in Chinese companies during significant conflicts.
As a result, there is uncertainty regarding whether BYD can match the innovation power demonstrated by Musk's companies. In the next two years, Musk's companies are expected to introduce high-quality and affordable cars to the market. European companies, on the other hand, face a significant challenge in competing with their Chinese counterparts. It's essential for European governments to conduct studies and make decisions aimed at reducing the cost of qualified labor to stay competitive in the evolving automotive landscape.

Both BYD and Tesla are growing and the ICE market is shrinking. So the question is who is growing faster by taking away the ICE market. BYD sells lower cost market cars segment, mostly in China, so they will grow faster. Tesla growth will speed up once they move into the low $30,000’s and $20,000’s cars, either by improving the manufacturing cost of model 3 or/and making the Model 2. BYD will have a harder time entering the US and European maket because they don’t have any manufacturing plants there in order to bypass the tariff. But even when they do manufacturing jn Europe and US, they will lose the advantage of China cheap labor cost. Unless they can automate and make cars just as cheap as Tesla and make their comparable model cars more attractive at the same price as Tesla, they still cannot compete.

The hare shouldn't laugh at the tortoise. It should stay awake and alert at all time. Elon sure didn't read much stories when he was a kid😂

@@wallacekatini3424 there is no "last laugh" . If BYD is not careful, it will become the next hare. This is a cruel world

The biggest value of Tesla, is not at the hardware,
but in AI, Data Mine, Autonomous driving.
Only in those areas Tesla still holds competitive advantage over Chinese counterparts.
Canada invented LFP battery, but is left out of the game, thanks to stringent policies and MAFIA style labor unions.

BYD is not the world's largest EV manufactturer. They had greater numbers in Q4 2023 but for the entire year, Tesla stayed on top! Tesla sold over 1,8 million EVs while BYD stood at aaround 1.6 million. This was to be expected as Tesla's factories were changing equipment for the new CT and the refreshed Model 3. Something similar would happen probably in 2024 with the new refresh of Model Y.
