Butterfly Zipper Drill -- Forwards (Joakim Strandberg)

  • An advanced, alternate version of the Zipper Drill (alternating diagonal butterfly movement, forward in this case), showcased by Swedish goalie Joakim Strandberg. Notice that unlike the traditional Zipper technique (as demonstrated by GDI's Colin Catherman), Jocke's trajectory is almost dead straight, and his hips and shoulders stay more or less stably oriented to the boards.
Though the speed and fluidity can seem overwhelming, especially if you watch Jocke's knees, close inspection of his skates reveals that this remarkable movement is generated by a series of small, precise forward C-cuts in the butterfly, driving off the toes of the skates in a crescent shape exactly as in the normal upright C-cut. This movement requires the same combination of tremendous leg and core strength and exacting technique as in the infamous 'Swedish Duckwalk' video.
As in the same demonstration backwards, a more disciplined stick would have been ideal, and a slower, smoother pace would have allowed even more control and easier analysis.
