- Dominic Hašek uses his 'patented' Hasek Roll to prevent Eric Lindros from scoring in the Olympic shootout-- but does he actually stop the puck, or does he force Lindros to hit the post? Find out here...

From Hašek book: Lindros was comming crazy fast, I expected fore hand and stayed quite bad, the last chance was to throw the stick and try to catch it with glove. However, I was lucky, I did not manage that, Lindros hit the post, I heard it and I didnt make a glove save
Who cares if he got a piece of it or if it his the post? Bottom Line: Lindros didn't score
No shit sherlock
To people who don't know or care about anything beyond a box score, they don't care.
To people who love the art, sophistication and complexity of the sport, they do care.
I believe there was a very tiny deflection from Hasek's stick or blocker, watch 0:56. If Lindros had all the free space he needed, he would have easily put it in.
A different angle at 0:52 is interesting because viewing the first time, it's not clear that it hit the post or Hasek's glove but I think after a few viewings, it's clear that it was Hasek's glove.
Also, we didn't hear the metallic 'ping'.
If it was the post, which I believe it was, it's because Hasek gave him so little to shoot at. Also, Hasek had a way of getting in the heads if the most prolific of goal scores.
Post after he changed slightly direction with blocker
I have been watching this replay ever since 1998, I am a goalie coach and former minor pro goaltender. I STILL can't quite figure it out. What we know for certain is that Hasek's blocker stops Lindros' follow through on the backhand, and that the puck does hit the post.
What blow my mind in ultra slow-mo there's a possibility that Hasek's blocker AND glove might have slightly affected the pucks trajectory.
I agree with you. I missed the blocker deflection, but that's Hasek. The glove also got a piece. We will never see anything like it again folks
Exactly, milimeter lucky save, it was his tournament
Hasek brings his stock and glove closer to the puck to close the angle and close the shooting area for Lindros. He had thought things up..
He got a piece of it with the back of his glove.
It hits his blocker/stick just as Lindros takes the shot (he essentially attacked the stick as it was released...a pretty common Hasek move. It then also hits his glove.
Hasek said it was a post in his book.
Yes, at first Hašek said it in interview for Czech TV
And you can watch The Nagano Tapes, they talk about it there
...and what is the point of this analysis? No goal - end of story...
All that matters or mattered is the pucks not in the net. Hasek's the man.
No matter, we won gold medal 🏅
I honestly think that he gets a piece of Lindros stick with his blocker causing him not to put the puck where he wanted and it hits off the post.
The Canadians were very passive for most of the game and the Czechs had far more chances. Dominik didn't even have to deal with any big chances. Canada was held up in crucial moments by Patrick Roy, who covered several dangerous chances. Canada was much better in overtime. The Czechs were crushed by the equalizing goal with a minute left. Whoever was luckier in the shootout won.
Looks like Hasek kind of threw his goalie stick, that’s usually a penalty during most hockey games.
Looks like both too me cause it does certainly hit the post in the last angle we see, but the puck has a flutter at that point which it didn't have on Lindros' release.
Jagr hit the post too.
Skvělý zákrok.
It was all post. Hasek may have got a tiny piece of it with the shaft of his stick right as the shot was lifting off the ice, but I don't think he even got that piece. It wasn't a glove save though.
I had thought he threw his stick, and was going to check the rules on that, but on review, it was just barely in his hand when Lindros shot, so it's no issue...
legend!
I've been looking at the same play for 14 years mon.
Looks like he catches Lindros' stick/deflects the shot, then the puck hits the post. Loved watching Hasek make these insane saves growing up.
Amazing save by Hašek
Hasek glowe save!!!
The Best of the BEST!
Hassek's best friend stopped it.. The post!
Frame by frame is not ideal for measuring three dimensional trajectory. The puck flips up on his stick but Lindros shovels it toward the net. Hasek thrusts his stick as close to the puck as possible, making contact. The puck's path is clearly interferred with in this manner. That is what I visually perceive.
Love how Hasek threw his stick (a penalty) and nobody called it.
***** Explain what you mean.
I watched the final at the time for sure. I just wanted to see what you were saying. His officiating was biased against Czech for the Czech's knocking out Team Canada. I am glad Czech won. I'll have to watch it again If I can find it. Thanks.
Hasek also meant this in his book. "I fastly picked up stick again so that refferie did not notice"
An elite shooter went on solitary goalie. Goalie did his best to prevent him from scoring. An elite shooter did not score. You do the math.
Blocker definitely got a piece but can’t tell if the glove did too
Why have I watched this from every angle repeatedly and still cannot tell if it was a glove or post?
Hasek forced Lindros into uncomfortable position...yes, it was Hasek's work again. Canadians will never overcome their lost games from Nagano. It was not the only game they lost...They had the best players in the world but still did not win. They just lost with much better teams that time.Czechs were unbeatable. They really really wanted to win and they just did their job too well.
The Czechs were also allowed to practice together. The NHLPA made that difficult for the 2 North American teams. When the NHLPA doesn't interfere, the rest of the world watches Canada and America battle for Gold.
Half of the team Czech republic was from Europe. You North Americans are just sore loosers. What happened in Torino?
If you keep pausing and playing it at different angles when he releases the backhand you can see that the shot was already released, it didn't touch his blocker or glove, and it hits cleanly off the post. The only thing that touches Hasek is Lindros's stick.
Oh and also on the official IIHF website they say Lindros had Hasek beat but he rang it off the post. Case closed.
Lindros draws the puck to his backhand with an open net. Hasek tries to get his hand as close to the puck as possible. Lindros starts his backhand shot motion. In the middle of his motion the stick/puck contact the shaft of Hasek's stick. If the stick doesn't make contact Lindros' stick would've finished the motion and directed the puck on net. An interview with the denied shooter in the heat of disappointment isn't evidence. The camera has a better view than Eric's tenth of a second look.
doesn't matter, Lindros choked, should have been a goal if he just waited out hasek for a split second longer, but instead, Hasek stopped Eric's follow through, probably didn't get the puck, but def. changed the shot.
0:56 I think Hasek got a VERY LITTLE of that shot by the side of his glove then it went of the post ...
Anyway, next Jagr's shot hit the post aswell so ...
although it's hard to say if the shot before hitting the stick shaft would've hit the net
I think the puck might have hit Hasek's stick while the shot was being taken, then deflected & hit the post.
He throws his stick
For sure it was post. I always thought that as soon as they showed the replay. So the announcer got it wrong. However, yes, he stopped him. By forcing him to hit the post he is stopping him. Its a save and is recorded as one as it is a shot on goal.
It's not a shot on goal. Shots that hit the post are counted as a missed shot. A shot on goal is a puck that will enter the net, a save is a shot that would have entered the net if the goalie didn't interfere with it DIRECTLY. Hasek did not touch the puck(interfere directly) and the puck would not have gone in.
Not a shot on goal, but a damn good play by Hasek(and honestly, Hasek doesn't give 2 shits if it was a save or not, he's happy it isn't in the back of the net).
The shot definitely hit the post, whether it was deflected by Hasek prior to that is debatable.
i think, that lindros hit the post , but if Lindros hit accurately, Hasek would have saved. (sorry 4 my english :D )
His glove was there either way.
I can't tell if he got the slightest piece on it ( I know grammar isn't correct -_-)
puck hits the shaft of the stick on release and goes wide. so that would mean a save. the glove doesn't touch it.
Hašek told it was post, no his save
he forced lidros to move left, then wen committed, hasek made despreation blocker glove
Does it matter? It hit the outside of the post either way. Another quarter inch to the left and Lindros’ shot is wide.
what does it matter? if it hits his glove he kept it out of the net. if it hit the outside of the net he kept it out of the net. if the goalie makes the first move and makes the shooter miss altogether its still a save.
No, it's not.
I dont see the point of this video? Is it supposed to prove that Hasek didnt even touch the puck so he might as well have stayed on the bench watching poor Lindros screw up not scoring into the empty net or what?
As far as I am able to see, I'd say Hasek did save the shot with his stick. Whether he actually touched the puck with his stick or just interfered with Lindros's stick doesnt matter. Czechs had better team and better players. They won fair and square.
Btw. During 1996-2002 Czechs had best hockey players, played best hockey and won most of the tournament games. The fact that they would win the Nagano Olympics was totally clear back then.
I think he got a piece of it then it got the post
it deflected of the end of his stick then hit the post. but doesn't really matter, it didn't go in so hasek did his job.
More importantly, how is lindros captain of this team?
I know it may be a long time ago but for a few years, Lindros was considered arguably the most dominant forward in the NHL. That was until the big hitters in the league clobbered him when his head was down. However, it's still pretty ridiculous for him to be named captain over Gretzky.
@@imaratspal What difference does it make? Canada lost to Czech. Period! :D
@@MusikPiratCH Because it has to do with Canada, not the Czech Republic
@@imaratspal But even if it had to do with Canada it wouldn't have changed the outcome of that game! Canada was even very lucky to score in the last minute of the regular time!
So what purpose has this whole discussion about the Canadian team? (None as far as I'm concerned.)
@@MusikPiratCH Are you Canadian? Is this your team from the country that you live in?
If you're not, then your opinion here is irrelevant and your purpose is simply to troll and be toxic.
Leadership of that Canada team and having the face of Canadian hockey for 20 years be the Captain obviously means something to Canada and nothing to anyone else.
????? purpose of this video?????
It was a goal I suppose
Glove then post
Should have gone back to the forehand, would have had a wide open net.
he made him shoot there by covering the rest of the goal and had the place covered inches to the right had he not hit the post, Hasek=won.
Yes yes he did
man he got lucky!! i love hasek
I'd be willing to cut the broadcasters some slack.. In real time, from their vantage point, not totally easy
Looks like we are destined to disagree my friend.
Hasek and Brodeur greatest ever
I'd clearly pick Hasek over Brodeur and Roy because of this Olympic Gold in Nagano 1998! There Hasek was clearly the best goalie! :D
No matter what others (mostly Canadians) say (about Roy)! :P
It did not hit the post
Hasek's job was to stop Lindros scoring at any cost so whether he's hit the post or there was the slightest touch of Hasek it doesn't matter. Hasek did his job, Lindros failed a bit.
Except Hasek didn't stop Lindros. Hasek was out manuevered. The post beat Lindros.
Post
blocker post
Hasek threw his stick. Should have been a goal.
Hasek got a slice of that pickle
Bottom Line: Lindros didn't score
It's always funny to see people try and dumb the game down like this for the rest of us who enjoy discussing the complexities of the sport.
too fast!!!why so fast???
Why would you skate like a madmen in a shout out when nobody is chasing you? you will have less time to pull a move and that's what happened to Lindros .He painted himself in a corner the moment he skated too hard for no reason!
One of the stupid and pathetic European rules had to decide the game. Canadians were all over the Czechs in overtime after the tying goal, which was single handedly set up the Big E. in the third period. At the same time, however, Canadians played terribly for most of the game, and were greatly afraid of Hasek. They never played their "A Canadian game", meaning, they never played physical, intimidating, in your face style, agitating Hasek, blocking his view, creating traffic, etc. In general Hasek had flaws and weaknesses in his game and they were easy to figure out. Yet, it's easier to say it than do it. He was big and tall by nature, then add all his monster equipment to it, and there is your recipe for a hard time to score a goal.
5 ft 10 in and 165 lb (178 cm 75kg) is not what I call big and tall.
Canadians didn't deserve to win, they were expected to win easily ....but in the regulation, Czechs matched them in all aspects of the game. Scored in the last minute ... No, they deserved a loss here. + if you don't like shootouts why do you have them in the NHL ?
don't cry, babe...
Canada was getting better in OT, yes. But throughout the regular time, they were outplayed by czechs and only because of spectacular Roy the score was only 1-1. I remember when the czechs scored in the 3rd, shots on goal were 25-16 in their favor.
Sore losers Canadians. Hasek was easy to figure out? Few vezzi as and Hart trophy tell a different story.. In Olympics skill plays is that win game's. "Canadian though game will just cause Canadians penalties. And reichel, jagr etc at the power play you know what would have happened..
so what? hasek is the greatest goalie in the history of hockey, lindros is a joke.
You mean 2nd best Roy is the king of the mountain
+Tyler Purdey Roy?? You mean the goalie that lost the shootout? Haha.. Grow up:o)
4 cups
micio026 Do not make a full of yourself. Look at Roys stats please and achievements. There are 3 - Broedur, Roy and Hasek and none of them are in 1st 2nd or 3rd place. They all are equal. They all are 1st place.
Belij19 Do not make a "full" of myself?? Right back at you:o)))
Hasek hit it.
