    This is all you need to know about "El Matador", Mario Kempes: In THE most important match of his country's futbol history--again, in a time before Maradona and decades before Messi, when Argentina took a huge backseat to Brazil in regards to South American futbol--Kempes scored twice against perhaps the greatest World Cup runner-up team, including the game-winner, and assisted on the final goal to secure the 1978 World cup.

    Maradona didn't play with an average team in 1986, He played with below the average team in 1986 and the only World Cup in the history which won by a Player not a team, In 1990 we can say Argentina had an average team & in 1994 Argentina had really a squad (BIG team).
    Napoli was below an average team in Seria A, Napoli was among the relegation teams when Maradona joined, Maradona took them to 1st place on his own, Careca, Alemao etc. joined the Champion Napoli not the relegation threatened Napoli, they joined in good times and was part of later glories UEFA Cup, Scudetto not the first Napoli glory (from Bottom to Top).
    You can't comparing Maradona with today's stars (players) because today's "STARS" can't win a LA LIGA with teams like Deportivo or Athletic Bilbao? they need one of the top 3 or 4 rank teams to win a league championship not an middle of bottom standing teams.
    1974 Germany
    1978 Argentina
    1982 Italy
    1986 MARADONA

      So he won La Liga with the mighty Barcelona with its 17 national players, didnt he? And he won 1982 World Cup playing alongside the greats that won the 1978 cup? Surely, he must won since he was so dominant.
      By the way, aint no close to relegation teams that go and do record breaking transfers to get the hottest footballer in the world. Napoli was a perennial 2-6 place team in Italy. And Hellas Verona won the scudetto a couple of years before Napoli, without any big name players. Talent was spread around. And sure as hell, aint no Argentinas ever in football history that were "below average". Nice story though

    Diego Maradona played for an average Argentina team in 1986 and 1990 and took them to back-to-back WC final matches winning the former. He did the same with an average side like Napoli in Serie A - the strongest league at that time - against the star-studded line-ups of AC Milan, Inter and Juventus as well as several other serious challengers uncluding Roma, Sampdoria, Fiorentina, Lazio and Parma. Messi has already proved that he is inferior to Maradona and he is a champion playing for great sides only.

    • @johnyb9519
      @johnyb9519 Před 6 lety +8

      Look man, talk like this is for children that didnt watch football back then. I dont know if Messi is inferior to Maradona, but Napoli was not an average side. They had great players all around, and another two world stars in Careca and Alemao. A team like that was not a surprise to win the title a couple of times. Hellas Verona winning the title in 1985 was a surprise. Milinco Pantic led Atletico Madrid winning La Liga was a surprise. Leicester winning Premier League was a surprise. And if you wanna turn the argument completely around, Maradonas' stint with a 17 national players Barcelona team was not a success. Plus he never won the european champions cup, but things like that happen.
      In 1990 it wasnt Maradona who took Argentina to the Finals, it was a mixture of ref help in group stages (the obvious hand by Maradona against USSR), amazing defensive play, luck against Brazil and Goycochea going mental in consecutive penalty shootouts. Now in 1986 Maradona had a great tournament, but lets not act as if Argentina knocked out monster teams to win the cup. '80s Uruguay, England perrenial underachievers and Belgium were not teams that Argentina would face as the underdog even without Maradona. Two big favorites were Brazil and France, they got to play each other, and then Germany eliminated France. Plus Argentina got to have an extended period of intense training in Mexicos' high altitude and that gave'em an edge against most teams, especially European sides. These are one month tournaments where luck probably plays a 50% role in the outcome. Messi got to the Finals in 2014 up against a team that laid a 7-1 destruction against hosting BRAZIL of all sides. Any other era with less a profound favorite and he could have won a cup himself. Or Argentina getting matched up with Brazil or France in 1986 and who knows if they'd manage to go past them. 1982 mighty Brazil curbstomped Maradona and reigning champs Argentina. Plus, Argentina was not average in 1986, just not spectacular and offensive oriented. Billardo made a deliberate choice of leaving out of the team several offensive players, to have a more compact, discplined and athletic group around Maradona.
      If you wanna compare these two, true Maradona was a natural leader, a more competitive person overall, and probably a much better classical 10. But Messi is hands down a much better finisher and scorer and more consistent with his performances.

      Maradona has skill a little higher than Messi. His leadership is far above Messi and CR7. His hungry for glory with Argentina jersey is slighly higher than CR7 with Portugal and Madrid. Maradona would do everything for Argentina...from kicking someone balls, to use god hand, use drugs, everything. Argentina with Maradona in football field was and still...the most dangerous team to ever existed in history of football ( Maradona was very good with Napoli, but when Argentina call him, he would pick Argentina first and then Napoli ).

The only reason why I believe Messi is better than him, is that after Maradona's injury, Maradona became from a demigod to mear human. And obviously Messi is better than any human so he is better than Maradona in the long run.

    The fact that Pele did not play for a European club does not diminish his accomplishments. It elevates him to being the GOAT.
    1. He was only 17 when he won Brazil's first world cup victory on European soil. No other non European team has ever won a world cup on European soil.
    2. He won a total of 3 world cup titles in 3 different continents away from home! No other player in history has ever won 3 world cup titles (Ronaldo (R7) came close to doing that).
    3. He has a record 14 top scoring titles in the Brazilian league.
    4. He lead Santos F.C. to two world club titles, beating the best in Europe, and scoring several hat-tricks in the process.
    5. When he retired from the Brazilian national team at the tender age of 29 at the Mexico 1970 world cup, it took Brazil a whopping 24 years to win their next world cup title in USA 1994.

I agree that Pele is one of the greatest ever but.. as I've said to many people.. no player, not even Pele could do what he did without a good team around them.. Pele was part of a great Brazil side throughout his career and honestly, it's different players in different eras, so for me he is one of the absolute best to ever do it like some of the other greats that have been..
      I do agree however that alongside Messi, Maradona and Ronaldo fenomeno he was one of the most gifted..

He just simply replied, when someone in Argentina scores 1000 + goals in one club or the sums in all clubs during a player' career, then he ( Pele ) will start to discuss who is the best in football.

      batistuta was a great great player but he never lead his team anywhere? I could argue that batistuta had a better team in argentine in the 90's and early 2000's than Maradona had in the 80's yet Maradona took Argentina to two finals and won ane, while batistuta great over all player did very little, maybe he lacked leadership?? who knows, now Messi is another wonder he's taking Argentina back to finals proving he is a great player also he has a wonderful team, honestly very good team, but he cant win if Messi doesn't win a world cup before he retires he wont be remembered amongst the greatest like pele and Maradona, he will be one of the greats in the likes of di Stefano, cryuf, Rossi, Zico, Ronaldo, Zidane, Ronaldinho, etc. very great players legendary players messi and ce7 had done enough to be in this group if they retire, but if they wont take their team to cup title with memorable play throughout after they retire people will still say pele is the greatest and Maradona a contender.

      I will chip in an opinion here, hope that OK with you. If Spain manage to win 2018 WC, will Iniesta and S Ramos be alongside the greatest group ? Very difficult to argue against. There had been only roughly 10-12 players who won WC twice in history. These exclusive few had been all Brazilians and Italians. If these two Spain players win 2 WC and 2 Euros, they should be high there.

      fromhatyai hard to say because is not just getting a World Cup many good players had gotten a World Cup and don’t belong to this list, and many players on this list are not World Cup winners, their legendary status stems from their individual capacity and leadership. Great players are one thing, legendary players is another thing GOAT is only one which in this case would be Pele, I do respect the talent of the Spanish players though they are great players in this generation they’re not ranking as the world’s greatest those spots are occupied by Messi and CR7 those two are phenomena of this era, as Ronaldo and Zidane were of the past era. But time will only tell. Also charisma plays a good part how much attention they garner to themselves and the sport the hype they created and expectations in peoples hearts. Only the greatest of players reach this standing and if they can add up a World Cup or two to that inarguably the world will remember them as legendary.

      My gut feeling is had Brazilian Ronaldo won the final in WC 1998 and/or ZZ had won the final in WC 2006 - each only one step short, then Ronaldo and/or ZZ would have been equal to Maradona and Pele now.

      Ronaldo is undeniably one of the best.
      Messi is chosen cos he's argentinian *DUH*. He has had good times but isn't a legendary player. If Ronaldo was striker he would have more goals.

      Brock Lesnar I'm argentinian and Maradona is better in skills and vision, Kempes was a great player but he was just a Big forward. Maradona was born in other context in a fight with england and was a revenge. Sorry for my english

      I agree that Ronaldo was the best ever as he's my favorite player of all time but Diego Maradona should get more respect. He's one of the greatest of all time maybe #2, the drugs weren't an issue when he was playing and even if he did it then it didn't matter because on the field he was amazing

    • @laas28
      @laas28 Před 8 lety +1

      So a player is the best ever because is your favorite?? If you can't be objective then you can't speak about football because if that's so, then Kaka should be the best ever because he is my all time favorite player..
      He won WC, UCL (being the top scorer) (something that Nazario didn't), a bunch of leagues, cups, won Ballon D'or.. But he didn't make step on or elasticos, so he can't be considered because of that (not even to mentioning that Ronaldo was finished before he was 30 years old.).
