You also have to consider the fact that Argentina won the world cup in front of thousands of Argentineans. They won it in the capital city of their own country in front of their own compatriots. That rarely happens and when it does, it's exciting.

That second Argentine goal is eerily similar to that of Alvarez second goal in the Croatia game in the 22 World Cup where he took the ball and ran, bounced it off a player in the penalty box evaded the keeper and still scored. It's pure magic almost defies the laws of physics

Argentina’s second goal was in fact an own goal. You have to see the footage looking down from behind the goal which does exist on the Internet. Look at Mario Kempes - Argentina 1978 - 6 goals - CZcams. At 1.25 Suurbier boots the ball in trying to clear as Kempes flails at it with his right foot but fails to make contact. The standard footage shown from the side does look like Mario touched it in. A classic case of the camera lying.

I think it has to do with profile. Kempes was serious and cold blooded, let his game speak on his behalf.
Maradona was always hotheaded and willing to answer anything and anyone. A gladiator.

With the match 1-1 just before the 90 mins were up, Netherlands hit the post in this game. That's gotta be one of the big what ifs in WC finals.
Would have been a travesty of footballing justice for the best team with the best fans to lose to a late sucker punch goal.
Yes, the Dutch were technically awesome but boy, the Argentine attacks were so fluid and impressive. Kempes and Luque were like swashbuckling cavaliers leading one thrilling charge after another.
Argentina were worthy champions - an attacking side built to go forward but many of the other finalists were so obsessed with tactics that only a few were worth remembering.

Resenbrink was a fine player indeed who, in addition to playing for the Netherlands in the '74 and '78 World Cups, was a member of that terrific Anderlecht team of the '70s. Sadly he died in 2020 and another player in the '78 final, Leopoldo Luque, died in 2021.
