A veteran hitman is the best at what he does. He is able to kill targets and make it look like they died from 'accidents'. Focused, knowledgable and alone - this has been Arthur Bishop's existence - that is until he takes on a young protege who he decides to train to become a 'mechanic'.
I take a look at the original 1972 film The Mechanic, starring Charles Bronson and Jan Michael-Vincent and the 2011 remake starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster.

Great stuff as always John. Once again, I only saw the remake... The original looks interesting!
Check out the original. It is not a great film, but it is a decent enough watch.
Original is better
@@spaceodds1985 Bullshit. It is a great film as far as Bronson films go, right up there with Death Wish. I don’t consider The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, or The Dirty Dozen to be “Bronson films”.
I always keep going back to the Bronson film again and again.
Good for you.
Bronson had more charisma in his little finger than Statham has in his whole body.
First, that's a really good Statham impression. You could have downbeat endings in the 1970's. Movie budgets, advertising costs, etc. weren't as high and the potential box office 'hit' from a darker ending wasn't as big of a concern. It may even have been an asset in the gritty, risk-taking 1970's. Although obviously the homosexual element was still considered too much of a risk. The first time I saw Winner's film, I genuinely thought that Bronson was onto Vincent's poison trick and that he was simply faking his death in order to get an advantage. I was expecting exactly the ending of the Statham remake.
I have read that Bronson refused to accept the homo angle. I don’t doubt it.
camino! fancy seeing you here!😄
Wonderful to see another recon remake video. Your work is sublime
Looked up the sequel to see if it might be worth it. The description starts, "Bishop's most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life ..." And I thought - missed the point. This guy doesn't have a love, but he also doesn't have a foe.
i didnt know it was gonna be call me by your name or broke back mountain with charles bronson, that would have been kind of interesting to see, but in that era, probably people wouldnt see it, but interesting none the less, im going through charles bronson filmo, and yes this is a good one, the remake is great as well, the sequel to that remake we didnt need.
This was my first Charles Bronson movie growing up, still my favourite. I like Statham a lot too, but the remake of the mechanic is less cerebral and more blunt. As a Jason Statham actioner it does it’s job well as a remake it’s inoffensive and competent but doesn’t leave much of an impression as the original.
Now I want to watch BOTH! Great video as always Haphazard!!
Thanks Joe!
Oh and how about the one for “Death Wish” while we’re at it?
1970s movies are the bomb , brother!
6:13 Holy coincidence indeed!!! Haha!!! So pleased to see your return with a new recon review, my friend. Absolutely superb review and always enjoy hearing your voice again. 👌
great video. Loved it !! whens the review for spectre coming out? Looking forward to it :))
It's cool to see you still putting out quality content (first tuned in during the first batch of Bond vids). The original Mechanic is underrated and it's cool seeing it get some love.
It looks like The Fly and The Thing are still the only better remakes out there. Did I miss one?
Scarface and The Departed
I may be in the minority, but prefer the Total Recall remake. Texas Chainsaw Massacre had a good remake as well.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers possibly?
Props. Very nice reviews. More please
Probably the only Bronson film, outside of Great Escape, and Once Upon A Time In The West, that I like. It is a shame that Carlino’s script didn’t get to the screen, it certainly would have been unique. Despite Michael Winner being a sadistic and irresponsible a**hole, his cheap journeyman skills works well in this film.
As for the remake, like you, I find it decent. It is cliched, and there are a few hilarious scenes. TBH both are very workaday and decent viewing.
I've been meaning to rewatch Red Sun since I saw it was posted on CZcams. Another Bronson flick I really dug! Bronson, Toshiro Mifune, Ursula Andress, Alain Delon - great cast!
Death Wish was brilliant though
Hard Times is very good too, one of the first movies directed by Walter Hill and besides Bronson it also had James Coburn and Strother Martin.
You should learn to put virtual screen filters on the newer movies that match the older movies.
fully realizing that Arthur knew Steve's plan further recontextualized his death, i think he allowed Steve to kill him, it was a sort of subconscious assisted suicide, he couldn't possibly bare the loneliness anymore but he was still bloodthirsty enough to get even with Steve, in fact.. perhaps in his mind he thought by killing him he'd save him from a life of eternal loneliness as well.
Great review. 2011 version was a watered downed action film. Ben Foster's character being loose cannon (killing innocent people) that was only done so the audience get back Statham's character killing him. All the grey area in from original now gone, essentially black and white morality conflict.
When are we going to get Spectre review?
Art vs trash. The original is genius. Sublime. Will stand the test of time. Flip analysis.
I reviewed The Mechanic (1972) on my channel last year
Other remake recons for the future would be Murder on the Orient Express (1974 and 2017), Death on the Nile (1978 and 2022) and The Killer Inside Me (1976 and 2010)
John I just want to ask are you a fan of the fast and furious flims, if so would you do projects on them?
I only saw parts of the first one years ago. I never watched any of the others. They didn't seem like they were for me.
Bronson’s The Mechanic is one of my all time favorite films. It recently had a 2K restoration on Blu-ray and it looks great. I never bothered watching Statham’s remake.
can you do a Remake Recon video about Point Break (1991) and Point Break (2015)
Fast and Frivolous was a Point Break ripoff without the surf boards or good actors. And silly cars.
@@RDAUGIRD "Fast and Furious" and it's not a ripoff because Vin Diesel and Paul Walker they once watched that movie and took their idea
nice intro
La de Charles Bronson es mucho mucho mejor
Mucho grando di Telly Savalas Pancho Villa westernos.
I Liked the Ending of the Remake, More.
