I take a look at the 1955 British black comedy The Ladykillers starring Alec Guinness and the 2004 remake starring Tom Hanks directed by the Coen Brothers.
This is a Remake Recon I did quite awhile ago. The original video was removed, I did some tweaks on it and thought I'd upload it again just because.

“Wayans was annoying.” I really feel like that’s the only characters that Marlon plays. I hear that phrase A LOT in judging the characters Marlon Wayans plays.

    "The Italian Job" (1969 & 2003)
    "The Producers" (1968 & 2005)
"Murder on The Orient Express" (1974 & 2017)

Great movie. Just finished the 2004 version about 5 mins ago. One of my fav movies of all time. Love everything about it.
Had no idea this was a remake. Going to watch that asap!
Tom Hanks was fantastic and I think each character was played perfectly by each actor.

I love the original, also nice to see Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom together before they had success with the Pink Panther series which is also great.

The Ladykillers 1955 (100% on Rotten Tomatoes). The Ladykillers 2004 (54%). Moral of the story? Don't try and improve on perfection.

Polarising movie that remake and one that will land up being recognised as an underrated gem. It has its Coenesque charm like the subtle stuff going on in the background and repetition gags.

I don't get it. What is wrong with some scene changes and some added slapstick? The deep southern yet timeless setting in the '04 one was just mesmerizing. The fat cops, the church sermon , the Gospel singers, the difference between Mrs.Munson's deeply religious life and the life of the ne'er-do-wells just scraping by , the gang of assorted characters, Professor Dorr's love for romantic poetry , are all so quintessentially American. I guess it boils down to which movie you watched first.

One of my favorite movies of all time. The only opinion the reviewer and I agree on is that opinions are subjective.

I quite agree with your assessment
The original is a classic and the Alec Guinness part was originally written for Alistair Sim, who could not do the film. Guinness's performance is a homage to Sim
May I recommend the films Green for Danger and Scrooge (1951) as a prime examples of Alistair Sim's absolute genius 👌

To think Irma P Hall who plays Mrs Munson won a Jury Prize at the 2004 is Cannes Film Festival for her role. Clearly taste and judgment had evaporated that day

What's a Jury Prize? And are you upset she won or upset that she should have won more?

I haven't watched the original so can't comment on it. I found the remake to be exceptionally good comedy. It was also worth watching just for the gospel music.

I could have told you in advance that the remake would reflect the coarseness of our own period. The English elegance of the original is entirely absent. The remake is set in the American South with the token black character. Of course, the remake's gotta crap out with

with the scatological humor just like all movies these days. If you loved the original, then I've done you a great favor. I watched the remake, so you won't have to suffer thru it.

Saw this movie years ago and still love it. This and Oscar with Sylvester Stallone are my two favorites of all time......right below Lion King.
I like the fact that they didn't stick to the original. Imagine a wily old lady being more of a force to be reckoned with than 5 hardened criminals.
Looool....she had Jesus. She ain't scared o the likes of them.

Man, I remember this movie from when I was a little one. My gramps had it on tape I think. He had Hella VHS tapes. I vividly remember them CREEPY ass statues, the trash boat, and the music that plays while the older woman walks home from church. Honestly finna give it a re watch

Absolutely right... the remake is abysmal. The script writing and acting in the original is tight and consistent... not so in the later version.
A case of, If it aint broke, don't try to fix it.
I felt the same way after watching the James Cameron movie "Titanic"...
The 1958 movie "A Night to Remember" is far more interesting and accurate in it's telling of this historic event.

I guess this is an example of subjective opinion. My friend also tells me this is one of his favorites. I love the Cohen brothers movies; except this one. I hate this film. The way this film turned out it could've just been a Mr Magoo film. "The South"...? Compare O Brother... with this. It is way more authentic with hilarious archetypical characters. Not sloppy....stereotype caricatures? It was poorly done colonel sanders and sista Odell? Zero authenticity. The supporting cast is just not funny the jokes are awkward and would've fit better in a magoo film. If they had treated it with more seriousness the comedy would've come off better and the world felt more authentic.
