- US Candy Makers React To Sticky Australian Candy Makers! Sticky has been a big player on the CZcams candy scene since the pandemic, so it's about time we react to their videos! We find it so interesting that we're both making candy and yet we can have so many similarities and even more differences. I hope you guys enjoy this video as much as we did!

💑 About Hercules Candy
Hercules Candy has been on Steve’s side of the family since 1910(ish). When he took over in the 70’s, he anticipated after 10 years of hard work, he could move the business out of the basement and into a real storefront. Unfortunately, it took until 2018 for that to happen, but hey at least it happened! Steve and Terry own the shop, Craig (the social media manager) is their son, Cara (wrapper and shipper extraordinaire who is poised to take over the shop one day) is their daughter and Leah (who doesn’t love being on camera and is very elusive) is their oldest daughter. Karen has been working for Hercules Candy since the twins (Craig and Cara) were about 6 months old and everybody else is a new recruit. Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the 🔔 for more videos!

Lolly isn't a slang term for candy. We don't call a lolly candy, we don't use the word candy, it is a lolly. Never in 56 years have I heard an Australian say candy.
I guess that depends on what part of Australia you come from. I've called the candy made here as candy or hard candy. The softer stuff is lollies for sure. Maybe it's just me, I haven't stopped to listen, really.
@@utha2665Same. Hard candy or boiled candy are the two terms i use for this type of confectionery.
Yep,58yo here & I've never used the word candy or heard an Aussie call lollies candy.
Maybe the young folk do..but they're happy to 'become American' it seems 😐😑
the issue peoplle are running in to is when you say lolly you don't want them thinking loli.. one will get you investigated lol
@@nwerd7584eh not really
They come up on pretty different conversations so it's easy to tell which one someone is talking about
The lolly sticking to the teeth is no problem if you’ve been trained on red rippers (previously known as redskins). They chose the new name perfectly as I remember many Aussie kids ripping teeth out on those in my childhood. We probably look like marsupials grinding on those instead of chewing. Musk sticks are a classic.
They are still red skins to me
@@feelincrispy7053 I don’t think anyone would know what I was asking for if I said red rippers. Ah well, least golden gay times refuse to change 😁 everyone deserves to have a gay time once in awhile 😂
@@ohjesswhatamessgotta love a cheeky gaytime
The amount of times I sealed my jaw shut chewing one of those 😂
Musk sticks & milk bottles 🙂
Musk sticks are unreal. Classic Australian lollie. Highly recommend.
I actually learnt something today - had no idea they were Aussie 🫶 Love musk, but not too much at one time 😘
Best flavour
Can confirm!
Classic Australian lolly I’ve never spelt it with an ie
Never met anyone who likes musk. I personally *HATE* it ^^
Honestly I didn’t realise musk was an Australian flavour until I watched this.
That being said, I went to Sticky Lollies last year and they have so many great creations and classic Australian flavours.
I think part of why they can spend time making all the designs are because not all of them are constant lines. You get them while they’re available and then that’s it.
But also they only do hard lollies. I don’t think I remember seeing any other candy options outside of lollies when I went. So it reduces costs if you only have to concentrate on certain products you need to order. Plus Australia is expensive and so is the area the store is in, so I don’t think a lot of people bat their eyelids at the cost because it would be something you expect (from a local).
I have bought lollies from sticky Australia many times, they are the best I’ve ever had, im a qualified chef for 20 years, I have recommended this brand to many people in the industry who have been grateful for the recommendation. I live in a different state (Australia is quite large) and am looking forward to travelling to Sydney where they are located to visit their shop in person. They’re a great Australian business with great Australian produce
"Are Australian people also marsupials?" LMAAAAOOOOO
I think so!
Haha not quite we don’t have a pouch either 😂🤣
Not us, but the dropbears are....

Watching the Hercules Candy videos helped me get through the pandemic, and last autumn, I actually went on a road trip to Syracuse to meet these fine people in person!
Looking forward to my next visit.
6:00 those are like basic nitrile gloves over what looks like a woven mitten of some kind, its a common technique amongst BBQers
It's awesome to see how other countries make candy
Sure is!
Always nice to see candy crafters having fun with their work.
First time viewer to this channel who happens to be an Aussie. T'was delightfully pleasing wrapped in some Aussie pride.
As another Aussie once said "Art is important". Thank you for what you do, my taste buds especially included.
Blessings ~* Australia
Australia even has Pink Musk Lifesavers with the same texture as the mint ones
Not anymore :( I mean if they do, please tell me where to buy, but I've checked their website & everything & it seems that traditional life savers are no longer made :( I haven't bought them for years/decades, but I wanted to buy a packet to try as treats for my lorikeets & discovered only fruit pastels are left, all the traditional life saver packets are gone :(
we have that flavour Musk here in New Sealand(sorry last letter is broken on my keyboard haha) Its very close to cinnamon...or clove,we used to have lollies called smokers... go figure, I guess to hide the smoke smell on your breath, you love it or hate it.
That's interesting, thanks for letting us know!
Pink Smokers are made by Mayceys here in NZ.
Definitely not the case not like cinnamon at all lol
Some Aussy friends brought musk sticks when they visited... it's delicious, but kind of floral...in a similar way that rosewater is. I wish i could find it here.
I was watching Sticky long before I found your channel! Love you both!!!
There's certainly enough candy videos to go around haha
If you're trying new flavours that are popular in other countries, have a go at blackcurrant, which is one of the most popular flavours in the UK. Your British customers will love you!
Interesting, maybe we'll check it out!
Yes please try some musk lollies! We need to get some to you guys!
It's a little like aniseed, but very floral, you will either love it or hate it.
Love Musk sticks
Very interesting
We have been watching y'all since May 2020 and got some caramel apple ribbon candy for my Dad's Christmas present one year- he loved it!
Recently at Sticky in Sydney (traveled there from TX for the World Cup), watched them make a blue peppermint lollie that was delicious, and the entire time kept thinking "I wonder if Hercules knows about this?"
Then I get back to the States and this video is out! So cool!
Small world!
Your parents are such sweet, good hearted people. They make such intricate candies with all sorts of equipment and decades of honing their craft, and they see this shop doing so incredibly well only selling hard candies and they’re like “yup, that’s business” lol love them
Since the dad was asking about her gloves.
She's wearing two pairs of gloves, an inner fabric glove to insulate her hands and an outer vinyl glove for food contact. Both are single use, I used to use similar working in a bakery near me but here we also have to wear hair nets regardless of hair length and a snood for more than 1mm facial hair growth. Some work also requires single-use over-sleeves and aprons. Plus food work here in the UK mandates some form of coat, usually white though other colours are sometimes used for specific roles, to go over your outside clothes and either shoe covers or some form of shoe that are only to be worn in production areas. All to be provided by your employer at no cost as part of your expected PPE.
I noticed Sticky Lollies during the pandemic. I just found Hercules last week. I love how you both use sugar to make art, and so differently. I was telling my young kids yesterday that each candy shop has its own specialties, which makes it fun to follow multiple candy shops. 💕 I hope you keep making videos for many years. 💕
Sticky has been around for yonks, I'm 24 and I remember going and watching them as a small child but it's kinda a touristy thing to go and watch them make lollies. They are in The Rock which is the heart of Sydney right near the Opera House and Harbour Bridge so they profit that way too.
I bought a rose geranium a few years ago and finally figured out what musk sticks are... rose geranium is edible. The smell is amazingly sweet, candy like n then it hit me... its musk sticks.
Oh I'm so glad you found Sticky! I'm sure after 20 years Dave is ok with the repetitive motion of chopping candy! 😂 You should try some of they're candy - they have over 200 flavours. Good thing is they ship worldwide. They even have a store in LA. Love you guys.
Wow! They should get u working for them with all that info
I watched Sticky in Australia during Covid. It was fun seeing them create their images. I think watching them on CZcams introduced me to your channel due to the suggestions from CZcams. Now I also watch Sticky USA.
I'm Australian and the one thing I can't find here is your really thin Peanut Brittle. I come close with the Scorched Peanut Bar which is to die for. The musk stick is reminiscent of the Musk Perfume.
Oooo, yay, Sticky!!! They are such a great channel.
I have seen some shorts from Sticky’s channel, but I never watched the whole videos. I love Hercules Candy though, I hope to get some candy one day.
Also they have a candy maker named Cooper too! Cool.
I think the only thing this video was missing, was them trying Musk sticks at the end.
We hope you all continue to work hard. We wish you all the best.
Which pin is candy? "I'd have to lick it, i dont know" 😂😂😂
Your videos are always so interesting! Thank you for the video Hercules!❤❤
Thanks for watching!
5:06 omg just compliment the competition for doing it oldschool!
Would be cool if you did an "exchange program" with them🙂
Been watching you since almost the first video. Love your videos and your personalities
These two are such a mom and dad. I love them.
Hercules should do a trade with sticky. Send them an assortment of candies and ask them for an assortment.
We actually did that one time! Here is us trying their candy, and I know they taste tested our candy on a livestream, but I haven't been able to find it. czcams.com/video/eFSFx9j056E/video.html
What a delightful pair of families. ❤
I'M hearing a lot of similarities between the two.
The way they're describing Australian "musk" flavour _sort of_ sounds very similar to Turkish Delight, which has this sweet, rose-esque flavouring to it that is _also_ rather hard to describe and doesn't really have anything else out there to compare it to. I absolutely _LOVE_ Turkish Delight, so I really want to try Australian musk flavouring to see if it's at all similar, and if I'll like it automatically _because_ I also love Turkish Delight.
It's kind of like Turkish delight. the best way to describe it is to think of musk perfume, if that scent was a flavour.
No, it's not the same. This will turn some off, but it's part of the history of the flavour. In the 1800's, products started to become popular to 'hide' bad breath (little sweets called 'cachous'). One of the common ones in Britain, was musk flavoured. This is an extract from the scent glands of the musk deer, musk ox, etc. Later on, an 'artificial' version was developed and became poplar in sweets. From there, a batch was imported to Australia, and while their popularity died out in the UK, they stayed in Australia. It has a very strong smell with a sharp, but sweet flavour. They are a taste that you either hate or love, but because they're not like most other flavours, many people's initial reaction to them is distaste.
@@brettbridger362 Ah I did not know this! Fascinating! And the choice of name of the flavour makes more sense too. I'd still give them a go regardless. I mean, I'm well aware that vanilla flavouring originally was sourced from the anal glands of beavers, from a thick secretion called castoreum - thankfully since then they discovered a similar flavour from a chemical derived from conifer trees which now makes up the majority of vanilla flavouring, but some luxury products still use the original source flavouring. So animal musk isn't exactly the most unusual source for flavourings ever.
@@DavidStruveDesigns No the original vanilla is from orchids, specifically Vanilla Planifolia.
@@rosebrent9440 That's vanilla extract, in which case you are correct. I am however talking about vanilla flavouring, which surprisingly is a different thing entirely. You can Google "vanilla flavouring source/origin" if you don't believe me. It's the same difference between banana extract (which tastes like regular banana) and banana flavouring (which tastes much sweeter than extract because it uses a different chemical composition).
This is the only reaction video I want to watch! ❤
This was awesome, you guys could break the internet with an international collaboration video❤️🐈⬛
After looking into the musk sticks I wound up back at square 1: I already knew they were a type of candy using musk essence but I've yet to find any damn thing that makes said essence, other than things like musk deer glands but those are most certainly not used today for a wide variety of reasons.
My best guess is that it's something synthetic now, which is likely why it's so hard to describe
I like them. They remind me of you all. They do great work, while having lots of fun!
You guys need to order some of them!! I’ve striped them and they are awesome. Your candy is awesome too
We neeeed a taste test video!! Try those musk candies 😮
I’ve basically given up sugar and carbs but I will not drive by a store that sell’s these hard hand made lollies and not stock up! These are the best!
“Have you heard of musk?”
Terry: Elon.
😂 Terry you’re killing me. Your concern for their carpal tunnel was so precious lol. Based on the movements they’re doing in the video, I’d say they’re more likely at risk of tennis elbow, with all that wrist movement controlled with the forearm; you can see those muscles flexing as they cut the candy. Tennis elbow creeps up on unsuspecting non-tennis folks all the time! Spread the word!
I love Sticky’s videos, their creations are amazing and gorgeous! But Hercules Candy’s candy tastes soooo good! Your super sour hard candy is my favorite, even over big brand names like W*rheads 🫢. Your handmade exclusive chocolate creations are unmatched. I tried explaining your snack clubs to my friend and all she said was “….whoa.” 😋😂
This was a fun video!
You should check out how they make Blackpool Rock 😁
Childhood holiday flashback.
I love watching ya videos and so wanna order some of ya candy.. keep up the videos and make another shop down here in South Carolina
You guys could make just a tie dye in the middle with white on the outside without the heart? That’d be cool still!
The guys at Sticky are great! But I wish the did longer form content like you guys do.
They do! But yeah I think it's mostly shorts
They're live videos often go for about an hour
They do longer content - they do live videos that go for an hour every week.
You guys should combine all your flavors in one hard candy.
Love seeing candy being made.
Was never able to buy sour candy. I have had it but I wanted a truly sour one. One that stays sour for the whole duration... Any recommendations?
Thanks for sharing.
Musk sticks are delicious, you should totally try them.
Bloody oth they are the bomb aka the best lollies ever made in Australia 🇦🇺 here
I love her energy.
"Are Australian people marsupials?"
She's onto us
I hadn't heard of 'musk' as a candy flavour either - just of you-know-who... 🙄😂
They made my wedding candy in 2008 in musk with our names
I see the Sticky Candy store is in The Rocks. Makes sense.
(The Rocks is a suburb of Sydney, not far from Circular Quay ferry wharf and the Harbour Bridge)
As an Australian i really wanna try your candy now ❤
yes the flavour 'musk' tastes like flowery perfume!
Musk sticks are like super sweet floural rose water sticks. Again, SUPER SWEET.
As to the carpal tunnel issue, they don’t use much pressure to cut the candy so I don’t think it’s an issue.
I am wondering to reduce possibility of carpeltunnel could you repurpose a vegetable slicer machine to chunk up the candy instead of crimping the ends or doing it by hand. Appreciate yall from oregon
The canes they make are just like a term used in glass making called Milafeori!(sp?)
Wholesome watching their reaction to the father and daughter together
We have musk lollies sticks in New Zealand as well it's yum.
Image lollies are the standard in Australia. There is a company that works at the Big Banana (a tourist attraction in Coffs Harbour about 6hrs north of Sydney... look it up, Australia is very big on big things) where you can see them make image lollies. The company in this video is in the historic part of Sydney known as The Rocks, down by Sydney Harbour. In both cases, you can watch them make the lollies.
Musk candies are sooooo good. Definitely an acquired taste. Like violet candy.
you should get some of that candy they was talking about in the video that's uniquely flavored and try it in one of your video
Hola saludos desde la Ciudad de México, me encanta ver como preparan sus productos y más me encantaría probarlos. Les mando muchos abrazos.❤❤❤❤❤
Gracias Maru!
Man, I hadn't seen this channel from way back in the day, love the production value you all have now.
I was the last chef to work at the Paragon in Katoomba. All the fondants for the chocolates were the original flavours from 100 years ago, rose, violet, musk etc...all floral and pre-industrial fragrances that we associate with cosmetics these days...which is weird. Many people said they tasted like soaps.
Musk was one that stuck around here in Australia in confectionary, where its popularity in other Commonwealth countries and the U.K. declined.
One time i was waching a sticky video and one of their candy makers started making rude comments and hercules, i went off on them telling them its very rude and unprofessional to do that. Dave the owner the man with white hair, replied a long apology to me saying he was very sorry and that hercules was awesome. I used to eatch them too but no longer. I want to see more videos of Kara learning. Not so much the cooper and scott show. Im excited for u maing new things but dont that make u so much busier. Anywa love Hercules got my first order delicious my favorite creams ever should have requested all creams i will next time for sure. My sister loved the brittle and potato chip bark. ❤
Your link for the YT channel you are watching is broken. Great video.
Thanks, just fixed it!
That's Steve he comes from a candy making family.
Steve the man the myth the legend.
Hercules Candy
She’s not speaking for all Aussies regarding the popularity of musk lollies… in part because where REAL musk comes from:
“Musk is obtained from the musk pod, a preputial gland in a pouch, or sac, under the skin of the abdomen of the male musk deer.”
Now see how badly you want to try musk lollies 😂
Musk lollies are the absolute best...
@@esthermclauchlan3146, I happily give you all my musk lollies!
Hercules Candy, always the very Best! 🤗🤗🤗🤗
9:22 - does *Sticky* charge more to make it profitable to do the image lollies? NO!
They sell all their 100 grams bags - pillows or imaged lollies - for $5.95 Australian🦘, or about $3.85 USD. Two bags would be about 7 ounces and cost under $8, plus shipping.
And capybaras are from South America.🦫 Bigger than our beavers.
Musk sticks, pink and had a distinct flavour like rose water but stronger. Same shape as liquorice sticks.
I watch Sticky in Australia and there is also a Sticky store in Paso Robles in California that does live stream shows
Have you guys ever tried making dairy-free chocolate/ sweets? Or gluten-free chocolate pretzels and stuff? Every time I go to a candy shop the only thing I can buy normally is hard candy. thought i would ask. :)
The musk flavour is made from rose water, that's why it has a floral taste and smell.
Musk is like American native grapes (e.g. Welch's grape juice or grape bubblegum) minus the grape.
I like sticky lollies cause it’s seems they use better gloves than Hercules candy videos
The capybara or greater capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is a giant cavy rodent native to South America.
before these guys there was another candy making company called Suga.
They could be found in every single major, and some minor shopping centers. There was also atleast one that could be found in every CBD.
They had a huge glass front so that people could watch them making the candy inside. The Hot/Cold plate bench usually faced the window and there was ALWAYS a massive crowd out front watching.
Suddenly they begun to vanish and only two shops remained, one in Melbourne CBD and one in Chadstone Shopping Centre. After Chadstone had a massive Retrofit and Rebuild the shop there finally closed and soon after so did the one in Melb CBD.
Since then this one seems to have cropped up.
I was wondering if this is one of the few survivors which was bought out and name changed.
Sticky has been around for over 20 years! They have several locations all over the world.
@@TheCreativitySquirrel sounds about right, Suga started dying out around that time. They are possibly the same company, perhaps Suga was the rename or perhaps the direct competitor, they are roughly the same age, perhaps Suga is a little older.
Wheres the popcorn!? I would have demanded popcorn!
Beautiful to watch but I understand that making image candy is not an option
Musk is also reminiscent of soap. I'm originally Canadian when I first moved to Australia aged 8 and tried a musk stick I spat it out because it tasted like soap. Now I love it and it was easier to acquire a taste to musk than vegemite.
There is candy that literally tastes like soap, I really enjoy them.
I’ve never heard of ‘musk’ flavor- it’s like weird flavors people haven’t heard of such as ‘horehound’ flavor- that’s a weird one out of Utah.
Musk is absolutely amazing. I grew up eating Musk sticks so maybe that's why but I think musk is going to be like vegemite to non Australians. Either you love it or you absolutely hate it. Either way I think musk is AMAZING.
The Mum is so funny 😂
their "gloves" were just a pair of normal wool gloves with latex gloves pulled over them. The wool gloves were to protect your hands from the heat.
Musk is kinda like a mix of rose and vanilla it's super yummy
I love Aussie lollies
