I'll be dividing these retrospective videos into parts so as to both not make this video super long, and to get all my points across as this is one big story. I hope you'll stick with me to the end on this. Thank you!

One of the greatest things about the Godzilla comics is the fact of how much crazier they can get than the movies. They don't have budget or material limitations. They are only limited by what they can think up, and how much of it they can draw.
Yea
Much crazier than what Japan Godzilla done
Fun Fact: Godzilla still exists in Marvel's Earth 616 (their main Earth). When Marvel couldn't get the rights anymore or didn't want to, Dr. Demonicus, I believe, caught & mutated him, some other shenanigans happened, & a name change happened somewhere. But that monster is still technically him & does show up from time to time in other stories. I think there's even other Godzillas (Godzillae?) running around in other comics from the time too.
See I knew it! I knew GKOTM was canon to Earth 616. I’ve seen someone argue they aren’t canon because of inconsistencies but the problem is, if it’s canon, it’s canon.
Isnt godzilla just in the ocean there.
Nope, the mutated lizard in the iron man comic is not Godzilla it’s never stated if it’s Godzilla anyway
@@CretaceousNightmare1While he is not reffered to as Godzilla, Dr. Demonicus says that the mutation was once his worst enemy, so it os a little hint.
@@WhatDillionYT actually I’m pretty sure it is Godzilla, but also we barley see demonicus in his first years so we don’t know who he fought.anyways godzilla is still canon to the 616 universe, was referenced in a guide book where it said he lives on monster island and also appears with a Heisei like design in a splash page
I still have the big "Essentials" collection book of Marvel's Godzilla. I have read it over and and over again sooooo many times!
It's interesting that Ghost Rider didn't accompany his Champions allies in the fight against Godzilla. Ghost Rider has a Penance Stare power, where he can look his foe in the eye and force them to feel all the pain they've ever inflicted on others. It seems like that power wouldn't work on a creature the size of Godzilla, but in one of the cartoons it actually leveled Galactus.
I guess that’s why he’s not in the story because he‘s too op
Godzilla is a wild animal, he isnt fully capable of understanding what hes doing
I only knew about Marvel's Godzilla through the classic avengers, so to see that the big G having his own series is pretty fun to take a look into! Especially when there's a primary character named "Dum Dum" lol.
Doug Moench is actually a great writer (the Master of Kung-Fu series he did for Marvel is top notch), but I think he, by his own admission, really had to try and make Godzilla work in the Marvel universe. He made the right decision making Godzilla more of an anti-hero/hero in the comics, since most incarnations of Godzilla shift from villain to anti-hero after a worse threat arrives. I do like that he kept Godzilla's intelligence in play, as Godzilla is actually quite intelligent. Overall the Marvel Godzilla really feels like it takes inspiration from the Incredible Hulk comics, where the Hulk is being chased by the military and has to simultaneously defeat a villain, while coming into conflict with the military and heroes who don't understand his intentions. IMO to me, that works out pretty well for Godzilla and it could have been way worse than what we could have gotten. Overall, a fun series.
Some think that it would be a good idea to have Godzilla in the MCU. Very intriguing, but probably very difficult to accomplish. There would be SO much studio red tape with Toho, Disney, and Warner Brothers/Legendary, which is still going forward with the Monsterverse.
Maybe call him Wani like his later appearences and call it a day?
I can't wait till you get to IDW's Godzilla: The Half-Century War. That's not only my favorite Godzilla comic, but one of my favorite pieces of Godzilla media period.
toho: this is our new character his name is jet jaguar
the rest of the countries: *they proceed to change the name because.....why not?*
spain: superman
Usa: robot man
France: king kong...... seriously wtf?
Whaaaaat? King mother-lovin' Kong? What's the story there?
"It wasn't the planes; twas' beauty killed the beast."
"We can rebuild him. We have the technology."

11:15 just because it is such an important landmark and so well known so it really puts the size of that Godzilla in perspective
Very cool!
I’ve always read it as “De-Mahn-Ikk-Uss”, though.
As a 10 year old Godzilla fan in 1977, who had just been introduced to Marvel Comics that same summer, I was completely bowled over when I saw Godzilla #1 on the spinner rack at a local convenience store. I remember rereading it multiple times and flipping through the pages just to admire the artwork. I ended up collecting about 80% of the series over the following two years, unfortunately, living in a small town, the stores didn't always get every issue that came out, and I ended up missing 4 or 5 of them. It wasn't until several years ago, when I kind of got back into comics a third time after a 20+ year absence, that I was finally able to read the issues I missed in the collected b&w Essentials edition.
The Golden Gate Bridge trope might come partially from that 40s(?) Superman cartoon where a giant Godzilla-esque monster slams through a similar looking bridge in nicely animated sequence. I just feel like it's one of those pop culture moments that's not widely recognizable but has had its own small impact. I have no evidence for this but I have seen that clip used in many places (documentaries, stock footage, etc.)
1:14 is that wrath of cortex I hear? If so than That theme slaps!
I would prefer Gamera in the Marvel Comics over Godzilla because Gamera is more of a heroic kaiju. Godzilla might be more fitting in the DC Comics.
I'm a massive fan of marvel comics and Godzilla and the fact that Godzilla stomped a mud hole through marvel comics like that is awesome they did Godzilla justice
Great review man! Over the years I managed to collect every issue of this series. I enjoyed it but definitely think it would have been even more successful if Marvel threw in more of their well known Heroes/villains. Looking forward to part 2
Awesome. I hope you get to cover the 2000’s King Kong cartoon, while I don’t think it holds up as well under an adult perspective unlike Godzilla the Series, I still think the intro is awesome.
Thanks. Once i wrap up the Marvel Godzilla videos The king kong cartoon will be next on my list! Haven't seen the show in a long time but i do remember liking it.
@@PaperFinz nice 👍🏼
Hey, man, great video. Just a heads up Moench is pronounced "Munch" and Trimpe is pronounced "Trimp-ee". Stan Lee used to joke that it rhymed with "shrimpy".
Thanks for the info! That'll be a big help going forward with these videos.
Collected all 24 issues when I was a kid! I just recently came across them in storage at my parents. I plan on reading them again soon. Loved this series!
I haven’t watched this yet (but when I get the time later I will) but I know it’s gonna be as entertaining and interesting as your other videos. You’ve become one of my favorite channels in a short amount of time. Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you. Your kind words mean a lot to me!
That giant black bird with the mace-like tail greatly impressed me when I saw that issue back in the day.
The cool thing about most of the 'original' monsters in Marvel's Godzilla is that many of them aren't exactly new. Post-World War II super heroes went out of fashion in American comics for the better part of a decade. Yeah, most publishers had at least one but DC's Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are the only super heroes to appear in at least one title a month from their first appearance in the 30s and 40s until now. (Though with Wonder Woman, if you have to count appearances in titles not her own- like Infinity Inc, Justice Society and Justice League, etc.) From about 1951-59, Marvel's real biggest hits were giant monster comics and most of the creatures Godzilla is shown fighting come from these titles. Apart Xemnu and Groot, most of these stories were not canon for the Marvel universe at the time until Godzilla. Their inclusion was actually suggested by Archie Goodwin.
Keep up the great work👍👍
Thanks!
Thanks again for sharing your hard work
Marvel and Godzilla, what an awesome concept! I was floored by the first issue when it came out as a teenager and faithfully collected the entire run. So disappointed it was canceled, but in hindsight it was for the best. Loving this series and your channel is great!
so good
Have you ever thought of talking about the news of the next monsterverse installment with Godzilla vs Kong 2 and some the other news about the
new of continuation of the monsterverse
I'v always thought about talking about monsterverse news way back before Godzilla king of the monsters released. it's just that a lot of the other bigger Godzilla-Tubers already talk about the latest news, and i'd feel i wouldn't have much to add. Thats not to say i won't talk about Monsterverse stuff though.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! OK!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! OK!
Leviathan remind me of man bear pig from south park
I know it might not make intuitive sense, but my family is constantly mixing up my nephews Nightgaunt and Glitternight's names.
I managed to get a paperback compliation of the Marvel Godzilla Comics at a comic shop in the UK about a decade ago. It's nice going back to them thanks to your channel going through them.
It would be cool if there was series for red ronin. Or a series with heroes fighting giant monsters (not power rangers)
Batragon remind me of charizard
Best of luck on your we comic
I highly recommend the rulers of earth comics from IDW!

Me too, dude.
There is a behind the scenes why Demonicus didn't come back. See, Marvel was pulling a fast one on Toho. It is standard practice in an American comic company that on a licensed book like Godzilla, the license holders would own any new characters. However, Marvel included NO such language in their agreement with Toho. (IE: Normally, if say Marvel created a recurring Lt. J.G. in their Star Trek comic that came out around the same time, the character belongs to Paramount.) Toho was PISSED that they got duped. However, the same clause that allowed them to reference Godzilla issues in other comics. (Most notably in an issue of Marvel Two-In-One.) But they didn't have Demonicus come back in Godzilla because Toho threatened to pull the license entirely if they did.
The fights are like samurai jack and ed edd eddy vibes
Nice music dude
Thanks.
@@PaperFinz God I love Glover music! You have fine taste sir!
De MON i cus. "I don't think people could get these names confused"... well, you did, apparantly. :P Repeatedly.
A part of me REALLY wishes to see an episode of What If...? based off of this comic.
Actually that is really a tuesday for the marvel universe next to the universe rebooting and characters coming back to life and dying again
In fact he'll be calming Gabe that the entire issue. Imao bro i can feel your thoughts l
Fun fact marvel godzilla and marvel ultraman is in the same universe yeah the only time godzilla and ultraman crossedover in comics in turn of being in the same universe and i wish we can get an American ultraman movie it's actually easier than godzilla since you can do a rom spaceknight transformers green lantern and superman kind of fusion of story which could work as an American movie
Had some of the marvel ones.i can't find them but I hope I didn't lose them in the house fire a few years back.
Gonna be honest, 'Mo-ench' and 'Erb Triemp' didn't bother me half as much as 'Diminicis'. You make him sound like the leader of a shady band of friars.
Regarding the terrible dialogue: comic writers have always been in love with the sound of their own voices, so to speak. It goes back to Stan Lee and probably earlier. It probably isn't helped by 'The Marvel Method' (basic plot > artist draws the story > writer comes up with dialogue and captions afterwards) which probably still held sway in the 70s. It's why the art and action has to be crammed into the spaces between word balloons with characters yak yak yakking about everything and nothing. The writers have to fill that 'empty' space with _something,_ no matter how inane it is.
Also, hats off to the research put into this vid, especially for someone with no particular interest in comics.
Thanks, and forgive my terrible pronunciation with the names (That'll be corrected in later videos)
Also thanks for the info about the dialog. I was wondering why there was just so many text boxes throughout every panel. even in moments where dialog isn't even necessary.
Can you cover the mangas too?
Me too I not bother Godzilla color problem
Demoncus remind me of Eric cartman
Fun fact: Spider-Man appears in the Godzilla comics but only very briefly
Why didn’t he get the memo? Because he was busy with his cameo in the marvel transformers comics
I think you're being a bit nitpicky with the first two issues; I bought Godzilla: King of the Monsters Issue #1 a few years ago & I had a blast. Also, I like new monsters in Godzilla properties; I get tired of Ghidorah, Mothra, Rodan, & Mechagodzilla all the time.
Honestly, Dum Dum's behavior towards The Champions in Issue 3 feels sadly true-to-life for a government worker.
I have all the Godzilla verses in the mighty Morphin Power Rangers issue number one through five so I basically have all the issues🎉
MCU needs make a movie featuring Godzilla, they did have the Fantastic 4 face him.
You think Dugan was being dumb for refusing the help of the Champions? The Champions are to The Defenders what The Defenders are to The Avengers- The West Coast Avengers. Heck, even the Great Lakes Avengers get more respect than the Champions! The X-Statix make fun of the Champions!
Yes, I intend to keep naming every obscure Marvel team I can think of! That version of the Fantastic Four from an alternate universe where they all got stretchy powers that never actually formed a team because Sue Storm was too self conscious about her weird powers so she broke up with Reed and went on to marry Ben where they presumably went on to have an unreasonably interesting sex life? They crack jokes about the Champions all the time! That one team with...
Pleeeeeeease do rulers of earth
Seems like with the spelling -Demonic-us - it would sound like something closer to that.
That's the way I pronounced it in my head.
I also pronounce his name way.
I was the 1k like
Thank you, for being the 1k Like! :)
@@PaperFinz I wasn't expecting for you to reply actually, anyways, no problem!
