  • The start of a new fffffffriggin series where I take a look at Godzilla's western comic book history, starting in the 70's with the very brief Cinema Shares comic and the 24-issue run by Marvel Comics. Y'know, the Spider-Man people. They've got other characters too.

Stan Lee himself revealed that when Marvel received the contract to make Godzilla comics, Toho didn't send them any style guides or references. So what Stan did was bring Herb Trimpe and Doug Moench to the theater to watch one of the movies (it could have been Megalon) and poor Herb worked off of what he imagined the Big G looked like. That's the reason Marvel's work is so off-model, but it's also a fascinating look at what Americans imagined Godzilla was.

Behind the scenes trivia: a single comic industry editor, Bob Schreck, was working at Dark Horse when they did their Godzilla comics, then was an editor at IDW when they were seeking the license, then became the lead of American Godzilla movie licensee Legendary's own comic book line, Legendary Comics. He's a huge Godzilla fan. And the artist of the Fantastic Four comic with the Ultra Seven monster was Art Adams, who drew Godzilla comics for Dark Horse and elsewhere, again connected with Schreck and also a huge Godzilla and other monster fan.

One real missed opportunity with the Godzilla Marvel run is that while it's neat they created original Kaiju for him to fight, they never used their own. Marvel, especially at this time, was known for not just heroes and villains but their giant monsters too. Where's Fin Fang Foom, Devil Dinosaur, Grottuu, Orrgo, Giganto, Gorgolla, Googam, Goom?... You know actually reading these names out loud maybe it's a good idea they weren't included in the comic...

I am convinced that tie-in comics are a psyop, seriously, how does someone read Gigan as Borodan? It’s clear that someone is working behind the scenes to pull the strings, to fill our heads with lies and deceit.

17:00 yeah it’s sort of running joke, that the Avengers use to never show up when something big was happening outside of their own book. Probably most famously with Spider-Man maximum carnage,
though to be fair there’s good chucks of history where the team was made of characters that couldn’t sell there only individual books, so what other writer was going to want to use people like the Swordsman.

Since you are reading old comics, it is interesting to note how wordy they once were compared to modern comics. Idk if Marvel was doing their "Marvel Style" of writing during the Godzilla comics, but at one time how Marvel would write a comic was by drawing the panels first, then bringing in writers to then write the story/ dialogue using the action in panels to decide what they would write. So, theoritcally the artist drawing the moth kaiju could have intended for it to be Mothra, but the writer might have had no idea who that was and just made up a name for it on the spot. Idk if that's how it happened, but comic writing was insane back then. Also artists and writers hated the ads, because Marvel would just stick them anywhere. Which at times ruined the pacing.

9:24, oh DEAAAAAAAAAR. 0_0 Now that is a rant I did not see coming.
But yeah, I'm pretty sure foresight wasn't a thing by the time this came out and with now, companies wouldn't leave their proverbial comfort box and do the same thing with their beloved characters, this story with Godzilla being small is something I didn't think crossed my mind. It's pretty creative considering Godzilla's always pushing things smaller than he is. Talk about karma I must say.
I can think of in another media is Transformers' Child's Play, TMNT's the incredible shrinking Turtles and MMPR's earlier episode with Trini's doll. This was way before 'Honey I shrunk the kids' made this trope popular though I could be wrong on that.
If there's anything I can rant on, it's the episode of SDTopia from Zenkaiger where I wish that episode was a 2-parter and didn't involve a zord fight among other problems in Zenkaiger but that's another story.
19:27, wild time, baby. Godzilla fans are eating good.
20:26, Austin Powers is awesome. XD

Also G-Man, you didn't catch that the mutant Godzilla under Demonicus' control has a series of clones, so given that we don't actually know for certain if the Godzilla in "The Thing" is the same one from Iron Man, or another mutant clone. The one seen in Iron Man is implied to be the original Godzilla, albiet mutated, but you are correct that the wording, and the presence of the clones, gives Marvel plausible deniability for future use of the character.

Unfortunate how they never included Godzilla fighting against some of marvel’s original monsters from when before they did superhero comics, they actually did a fair lot of giant monster characters, one of which being groot, closest we got was devil dinosaur
Speaking of whom, I find it incredibly suspect that when rebooting devil dinosaur they replaced moon boy, who is ape-like humanoid, with moon girl, who is black.
