The 1999 Rumble Win did make sense because the Mr. McMahon character had been doing everything to screw Stone Cold out of a Title Rematch since September the previous year when Vince screwed Stone Cold out of the title. That “win” set up the Cage Match at St. Valentine’s Day Massacre for Stone Cold to finally get his hands on Vince with no BS interference since Stone Cold had been trying for that match for almost a year by that point (remember Dude Love ruined it on Raw that previous April) after all the different obstacles put in his way.

But the reason why Vince did a swerve to win the Rumble match.
Stone Cold was on fire, he was already won 2 Royal Rumblre and you knew that the situation at Survivor Series and The Rock won the title, that it was going to be Stone Cold vs The Rock at Wrestlemania, so Stone Cold was the obvious pick to win the Rumble.

    • @samdunne1990
      @samdunne1990 Před 5 měsíci +9

It made sense at the time. It was the Attitude Era. The overall theme of that era was the Vince and Stone Cold rivalry. This Rumble was Vince throwing everything at Austin to make sure he doesn't win, Austin overcoming it all and looking like he won then Vince getting the last laugh. Then we have a story set up for Austin needing to overcome more obstacles to get into the Mania match.
I think people are too obsessed now with the lists of winners and how historic winners have damaged the credibility of something. Person A won this title in the past so the title is less credible because of it, Vince won the Royal Rumble therefore the Royal Rumble is less prestigious because his name is on the winners list.
Ultimately the top face of the company had the fans ecstatic because they thought he'd won the Rumble then the top heel of the company (I guess top 2 because Rock helped) had the fans leaving angry and shocked because they screwed Auston out of the win. And that is what wrestling is about: the highs, the lows and the sudden switch between the two.

Plus the rumble was starting to get a little too predictable at this point. Austin won in 1997. There wasn’t a soul alive who didn’t know he was gonna win in 98 as he had no other real contenders in the Rumble and 99 looked like it was the same thing. Everyone thought Austin would win in 99 and it was starting to just get way too predictable. Vince winning changed things up and was something nobody saw coming.

    My thoughts on the list:
    10. I can agree but at that time, I wanted John Cena to win.
    9. Asuka winning was cool, but it was the decision to make Asuka lose was what ruined it. (Not to mention she lost it anyway right after WrestleMania.)
    8. Although it sucked, we did however get the classic Stone Cold vs Bret Hart at Wrestlemania.
    7. While it was fresh to see a new winner, it was a bit of a waste.
    6. While Chris Jericho should’ve won, I still didn’t mind Sheamus winning the rumble. He did have decent reign as champion. (Minus the way he won it but it did help Daniel Bryan get even more over.)
    5. For sure her winning it was horrible. Shayna should’ve won the rumble. It also didn’t help that although Charlotte won the NXT championship, it backfired cause she was waaaaay overexposed and she dropped it about a month later.
    4. The way they announced his return pretty much ruined his win. (Plus we wanted Daniel Bryan to win….not to mention Rey Mysterio getting booed which wasn’t even his fault.)
    3. The draw was the right choice.
    2. Definitely a waste for Ronda. (Not to mention it already leaked not only was she winning the match, but also how she was gonna win it as well.)
    1. While the win was pointless, it made logical sense from a story perspective. (But as a match…..it was lackluster.)
One that should’ve been there was Brock winning it back in 2022. (He’s Brock Lesnar. He can pretty much ask for a title shot and it can happen.)

Yeah, Asuka losing Charlotte made 0 sense since Charlotte lost the championship to Carmella the next smackdown anyway. I get wanting to end asuka's streak at Wrestlemania, but Charlotte didn't need Asuka's streak as she was already a multi time world champion and perennial main eventer. Imagine what that could've done for an up and comer like Carmella and the heat she would've gotten by being the first to pin Asuka but in such a dishonorable way since Asuka would've been weakened, battered, and exhausted. It was to feed into the slowburn Hart heel turn. Austin was never supposed to main event Mania that year. The plan was for the shady Austin win to lead into the Final Four PPV in February, where Hart would win the right to face HBK for the title and then win the belt at Mania 13 via heeling. As others have said Austin was to face Bulldog, Undertaker was to face Sid. Although I read once that the plan might have been for Austin vs Sid, and Undertaker vs Vader.
But then HBK got a boo boo on his knee and bowed out, making the Final Four PPV a match FOR the title.
It got even more convoluted from there. After HBK was out, Vince had pretty much settled on the top two matches (Austin vs Hart and Undertaker vs Sid) but couldn't decide which would be the title match. He ended up giving the title match to Taker vs Sid, because he thought he could stretch out the payoff to the Hart heel turn and delay his winning the title. Which, of course he did until SummerSlam that year.
tl;dr = the build to WrestleMania 13 was a fiasco, with convoluted booking, prompted by ego from Michaels, lack of confidence by Vince and apathy from most of the fans.

Not everyone who wins the Royal Rumble needs to win at WrestleMania. Having someone lose at WrestleMania is just as important as having someone win. It definitely adds unpredictability. If every person who won the Rumble won at WrestleMania, it would become boring over time.
I personally liked that Sheamus won the Rumble. But I agree he didn't need to be the one to win it at the time. He could have faced Daniel Bryan another way. Sheamus and Daniel Bryan should have had a full on match instead of a squash match.
I say the most pointless wins were Asuka and Shinsuke. Shinsuke was buring as a result of losing to AJ Styles. His heel turn after the match did not do him any favors. Shinsuke definitely should have won.
As for Asuka, it wouldn't have been so bad if she had at least had a victory at WrestleMania afterwards. Currently, Asuka has a 0-5 record. She has yet to win at WrestleMania.

Shoot me if you want but Austin winning the Rumble in 1997 was the right move. I wouldn't describe this as pointless. WWF's unpredictable moves at that time were one of the tactics that really attracted the audience to the arena. Austin's controversial win and controversy helped boost his momentum. This also gave us the chance to watch a great 4-Way match at the next PPV. At that time, WWF had stars such as Bret, Taker and Vader on its roster, and I think such a move was needed for heel Austin, who was on the rise, to stand out.
I think we look at the situation from a perspective from the 2020s and therefore see it as pointless. But the phenomenon of "unpredictability" is the most entertaining point of professional wrestling.

After he was getting screwed by Roman earlier that night, it was really obvious that Brock was gonna challenge Roman at WM. Thus why having Brock winning the rumble? They should just decide a rumble winner to challenge Bobby Lashley for WWE Title (Yes the titles should have kept separated)

Rock-Cena 2 didn't need the title on the line for Cena to get his win back and he didn't need to win the Rumble to set it up. He was the top star in the company, he could just show up and ask for it. It still cracks me up though that the video leading up their rematch makes it sound like his wife left him because he lost a predetermined wrestling match to The Rock lol (and not because he was seeing Nikki Bella on the side)

Gunther DOESN'T DESERVE or NEED to win the Royal Rumble, or even be in the Royal Rumble, I mean come on, he holds the record of being in the rumble the longest, and the record of being the longest reigning intercontinental champion in history, he's been giving opportunities that others haven't, he don't need to win the Royal Rumble, also if anything no Champion should be in the Royal Rumble, instead they should have to have their title to be put on the line, similar with Logan Paul against Kevin Owens, that way it would make the Intercontinental title and United States title have more meaning than being secondary titles, that way those titles won't be similar to the way how they did with the ECW world title, so that way with them being defended, they would actually mean something, instead of being an afterthought.
