I never get sick of Joseph's 👁👁 when nick introduces him 😂
Or Nick's eyes when Joseph says something crazy....
If it’s a Cronenberg film (father or son) you know there is going to be body horror. Nick you are right, this film should have been an episode of something like Black Mirror.
I wanted to know more about the rules for the cloning. At first, I thought you can only get a clone when you break a law. But later we see Mia and her lame ass clan of losers purchase a clone of James. What!? Anyone can buy a clone of anyone? What was all that crappy paperwork he had to sign the first time if any rando can just buy a clone of him without his consent or knowledge? I dunno. As soon as I realized this was another movie about how “bored” boring rich people are, I lost interest. This movie was like Westworld meets Squid Game… but in a bad way, with no one to root for.
“It didn’t send me anywhere:” Perfect wrap-up.
The most unbelievable part was how his wife didnt notice all the money he was spending off her bank account, them clones and parties aint cheap🤣🤣🤣
I think you missed the point of the movie... It really isn't about hard scifi or cloning. The clones are simply metaphors for the movie's theme.
You're right that was a plot hole. The movie painted him as a free loading poor reliant husband while simultaneously allowing him to be framed like he's rich. I didn't like it. Film tried to survive on one idea.
“It didn’t send me anywhere” is my new catch phrase now, just like “crunchy” & “I wasn’t feeling this movie”… Joseph & Nick are the best! I wish y’all would review Venus in Fur! 🙏🙏🙏 I’m going to look for it online.
Just hoping Joseph will revive 'vejjiNAW' (aka 'v@gina')for 2023.
My thing is that there doesn't seem to be a point. You could do so many things with this technology that's never explored.
“I’m not feeling this movie “… pretty much says it for me. I will probably scan through it when it’s on Prime.
Finally someone who has found this movie just as disappointing as I did!
I loved Possessor and was expecting this to more Black Mirror, it wasn’t. A big mess. It just seemed like it was more a visual than a story. The kid doing the execution was very unrealistic to me. I was disappointed I didn’t get a Black Mirror like movie.
Joseph’s disposition through all this is “Why did you make me watch this bullshit?” 😂
Why would you want ashes of you’re clone?
I liked this movie, but people keep going on and on about how original it is, when it really, anybody who has read JG Ballard's novels will find most of the elements in it really familiar.
I feel like I read waaay too much into this one. 😅To me, it was about hedonism of rich people at the expense of the poor, masculinity (or lack thereof, especially with the partners some men choose and how they may resemble their mothers), and how each time we experience a trauma, we become a new version of ourselves and sometimes have to leave behind old versions (and sometimes we become unrecognizable to our old selves, etc). If I hadn't perceived it that way, I wouldn't have liked this film.
This is actually a brief but great analysis of the film. You touched on a point about trauma and how it forever changes us to the point of no longer being recognizable to those who love you and to yourself. Where are you picking up the notion that people end up dating people who resemble their parents though? He is basically being taken care of financially by his wife and there's that whole breastfeeding visual motif that happens a couple of times but anything I'm missing that gave you that impression?
@@KarlMarxhaswifi Thank you! No, you got it - it was the breastfeeding scene and how Mia Goth's character started treating him as well as how he kind of seemed to regress into a helpless little boy. Like a shell of himself, which speaks to the trauma again.
It did get repetitive with no progression.
I was wondering where were the lawyers and due process.
My husband's name is James and he got so sick of mia goth saying it lol
I think James Foster was the real James Foster at the end of the film. I think that he stayed behind on the island to not only settle from severe traumatization but also to write his book there. I am posting my review tomorrow!
i kind of had the sense that for the majority of the film we're seeing the first copy of James Foster, especially with the scene where Mia Goth and her little group of bourgeoisie friends hint at the fact that they could've just as likely witnessed their original selves be murdered with a simple body swap when they are unconscious. Would explain a little bit more why James Foster has lost a bit of humanity after the first cloning.
I interpreted it like he realized that they looked at it as a seasonal game, so he could stay and plan how to get revenge/turn the tables on their next vacation. They him into an exploiter so now they'll reep the reward type deal.
Alexander Skarsgard Brandon Cronenber. They missed the opportunity to make a horror movie about Nepo Kids. Also, a Nepo Kid horror movie script is probably floating around Hollywood production companies as I type.
I think it was more an initiation because they’re nice to him at the end and ask him to come back the following year
I saw this movie’s trailer earlier and was delighted to find that you posted this video. Thank you! I was super curious. Keep up the great work!
I was with this movie for the first two thirds before it lost me. But then I hadn't seen a trailer or even a clip before I watched this. The premise of perhaps losing your original body (and by extension part of your humanity) was fascinating. Likewise, the idea of the characters having to use psychedelic drugs to compensate. But then the story completely derails in the third act. There is a more fascinating version of this story that's been done before with clones becoming self aware.
I agree with y’all on all of this. The movie was a huge letdown. It’s not super sensical and stops being interesting after the second execution. A better ending would’ve been if Alexander Skarsgård’s character was cut off by his wife at the end and didn’t have the money for another double. If they really wanted to talk about class disparity, they should’ve highlighted how he was an out of work writer that couldn’t hang with them on any level by having him not only be reluctant to get to their level of cruelty, but also be the only one unable to buy his way out of trouble
I had the same thought. He'd be cut off and out of money, and he would look up and see his "friends" watching as he was executed along with their clones.
I love how Nick rolled the R in Cronenberg 😂😂😂😂
I was excited for this film but thanks to you two I can definitely wait for this one and stream it on Roku in a few months LMAOO! Great review as always👏🏽👏🏽
I saw it last night and was anxiously awaiting your review! after I watch a movie I always say to my partner “I’be gotta see what my jellyfish boys say!” definitely agree with everything you said nick. thank you both for the great reviews always!
Seconds is a masterpiece from Frankenheimer.
When James pummeled his clone (old, lame self) to death, that was the ultimate expression of his will to power. He was reborn by it and through it. Gabi was basically trying to birth a self-actualized James. She saw the emasculated house husband that arrived on the island and thought of it as a fun, "vaction challenge", to fix him. He ultimately decides to remain on the island because he saw the vacuous existence of the supposed "actualized" and realized that no matter where he went, there he was.
Totally felt the same way
I’m loving that the head roll is replacing the eye roll..in the first few minutes..🤣
I loved it when I saw it yesterday. Definitely different than what I expected but I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Do you remember Multiplicity? “No.” Just dead. I liked this movie a bit more than you guys but I appreciate your commentary and theories, especially about the open-ending. This movie was beautiful to look at on the big screen!
Agree, I thought this movie was going to twist my head off, just came across like a weird movie for people who have never seen a really weird movie
I thought the story was a little muddled and a kind of paint your own ending but I really enjoyed the look of the film and the music. I want to watch that orgy scene one more time just to take in the music.
i can’t stop watching this intro 😂😂😂😂
I just got out from the movie. I fell asleep and I was hoping you would recap it! Earlier today my coworker had the gall to say I looked tired. Then she asked me how many hours I slept! Girl, eight hours! Maybe she knew something I didn't. The last thing I remember is Mia shooting at James.
Also, the second time they went through those flashy pictures, I rolled my eyes. It was too long!
Was disappointed with this film I was so looking forward to it because Possessor is one of my favs. Could have been made into a short film and would make more sense.
Kronenberg and Skaarsgard gives me NEPO Infinity Pool
I do like that they kind of poked fun at that by having Skaarsgard’s character be a nepo baby too.
I agree with you guys. I was looking forward to this movie but it wasn't as good as i wanted it to be. Alexander was the best thing about this movie.
This movie was the strangest combination of Babel, Barbarian, The Purge, and the show White Lotus, but made by a Cronenberg.
I just found about this film yesterday and hearing that it's from the same director as Possessor partially explains why the trailer has 30mill views. From just watching the trailer alone, it comes off similar in production / story quality (what have you) as many recent independent art house films which are ultimately released, never heard about, and quickly forgotten. Perhaps there's something a little more special about this than the director's name value?... but then again Neon might just have a really good online marketing team. I'll have to watch it and see what it's all about. Keep up the good work guys and btw, it'd be fun if you could review some theatrically released anime films sometime. Preferably ones released through GKIDS.
Hmm. Maybe I'll check this out on streaming. I hope y'all plan on seeing and reviewing A Knock at the Cabin.
Very curious to hear your thoughts on Eileen! My least favorite Moshfegh book but still apprehensively looking forward to the movie
This sounds kinda like remake of Hostel. What do y’all think guys? Rich people in a secret club go to a foreign country to randomly murder others, except for the clone factor. Omg Joseph agrees. I prob won’t watch this.
Yeah lemme get some fries, a double cheeseburger and onea dem $1,500 clones..
Can you review the new netflix documentary 'Kai the axe-wielding hitchhiker'?
The Nick tattoo on Joseph’s finger 🥲🫶
Nick really needs to know what the MSRP is for this cloning technology lmao
Watched this today and I agree it should’ve just been an episode on a black mirror type show.
Aren’t we all packing three urns?
Just saw this movie. I give your review 100%.
OMG I loved this movie and it felt very A24 to me! Also Mia Goth’s performance just blew me away! I think this will be my favorite movie of 2023 🤣
Neon has subtly been taking over A24’s auteur space.
It's a great movie - distubing, unsettling, deep and profound.
@@josiahward4236 neon has kind of been doing this for as long as a24 has honestly
@CWS and TKP 66-02 You are too shallow to understand it.
Just finished this, enjoyed this quite a bit. Would be interesting to watch this and Triangle of Sadness back to back
That's such a fantastic point. Skewering the elite has become a movie cliché at this point, but I have no doubt that many people of average means would do horrible things if they could afford it and get away with it!
Yes those people of average means are called serial killers, am I right? 😬😬😬yikes
@@jenniferjudy1620 Ha, no, but are there many rich serial killers? 😁😁
@@KJ-tz7vc maybe, maybe not? They say the most common profile for serial killers are usually white men who travel a lot to various places, are truckers, police, dudes in the military, and other predators who are seeking power or horrific thrills. 😬😬😬 I’m hiding under a blankie right now just thinking about it, sipping on coffee. Is it 420 yet? ❤️🙏 I hope we never have The Purge played out on reality tv 😱😱😱
I thought it was quite Middle Eastern as well as ex- Soviet bloc. More Middle East because there was a rainy season. The compounds reminded me of the medical compounds in Saudi Arabia, where they hire western medical professional people, particularly women, to work and live in these locked compounds.
Joseph suggests this 'journey' *would* "unclog" the Writer's block!😅Your *The Forgiven* review came to mind too in this narrative - minus the Sci-Fi parts. Again, Joseph's the better story version formed a 'more coherent' plot!
This film looks so weird to me. Not sure I could get into it. No one seems likeable to me ..
Thanks for the timely review gents, it was enjoyable as always. I just saw this today and thought it was decent. My question is... did anyone else get the impression that Mia's character is the OG clone aka the mother, hence the forced breastfeeding scene w/Skargard after he killed clone-dog? 🤔
Oh...I like that take.
@Fish Jelly Film Reviews Plus, I got the impression that Mia was clearly "in control" during their intercourse session (and that 1st indiscretion after peeing 😉🫴🥒), which turned into the orgy hallucination...
Mia provided the connection, and she linked Skargard to all the other 'zombies' 🤔
I agree. It's a step down from Possessor. There was a solid fakeout in the middle of the movie. But after that, it just didn't seem to have any more surprises or creative purpose. Just seemed like hedonist misery
Nice Sci Fi Horror... And the subject matter is one of my favorites
It does look like a Cronenberg film ...a David one ... from the 1980s!
Did they go to an infinity pool in the movie though?
There was like a 10 second breastfeeding scene. How did you miss it?
OMG! I've had steamy thoughts of Alexander since Tru Blood on hbo !!!
Without giving anything away, I recommend Moon (2009). That is all.
I’ve just watched it and I loooved it. What a spectacular flick. 🤩🤩🤩
Would love to see a movie where they hit someone with a car and decide to be honest / tell the police lol
I dont understand why he wasnt part of the club in the first place 🤔
This movie wasn’t good. Want to see a better captive horror movie? Check out Misery.
my vote from 1 to 5 is 2. inconclusive. Ciao from Italy
This evening I want to see Possessor
I'm gonna pass on this one🤠 thank you for the heads up.
Bad movie. Just saw it. It felt like a collection of hedonistic moments. The scene where he hit the soldier. Horrible imitation of real life war crimes. The only one that shine was the lead actors’ body.
Brandon is trying too hard to impress his dad..... Decent film, Nothing groundbreaking.
Did you guys watch the R rated censored version or NC17?
There’s a lot of people saying it’s spectacular, wonderful, genius kind of bla bla bla
Thanks!
Thank you!
Thank you guys! I watched it with my nephew today & we missed the first 8 minutes of it & did not understand it at all…. Not a fan of the film. Your review was great.
Awesome film Jackson Country jail, That’s one of Tommy Lee best film.
I love Askars, but I can't with his weird movie choices. Melancholia just about did me in!
My take is that all that stuff did NOT happen! Like at the end where he is on the bus and Mia Goth and her husband and the other couple barely speak to him and act like they none of that happened cause I think none of it did. I think he imagined it all, like he wanted it all to happen but he is a failed writer and just thought it all up, wanted to feel special cause he lives off his wife and has a dull life.
Mia Goth is such a bad actress and was horrible in this film!
Never been a fan of director's father and I it seems the son has even less talent.
Yeah for something that was supposed to feel gnarly and disturbing...I found it convoluted and pretentious. I couldn't stand Mia Goth in this film, or at least her character. But personally I though this film was trying to ripoff A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut and yeah Brandon Cronenberg is NO Stanley Kubrick. But yeah bottom line....this movie was boring and I hope Brandon Cronenbergs' next film is better with more original themes and visuals.
I for one really enjoyed this movie. The plot alone is interesting itself. Regardless of how any feel they capitalized on this film the idea of it is great. I have to say way better than "Knock @ The Cabin."
I'm the 666th like on this video. I totally agree with you two. It had some solid parts, 1 particularly I found effective. But it was perhaps more missed opportunities, unrealized potential. Did the young Cronenberg rush this one? Possessor felt much more fleshed out. You could tell he had more time on that, less on this.
Love Nick’s references here, and while I agree that the movie left a lot to be desired I did love the casting of Skarsgard and how his body is framed and presented in this film. While I’d see him in other films, even Eggers’, here there is a delicious exploitation of his body that reminded me of Rock Hudson in Seconds but left me wanting more. Making me wish I could’ve directed this…. Or to be Lucian Freud and have Alexander as my muse…….. 😈
I'm still going to watch it because it has Mia Goth. After seeing her in X and Pearl I've developed an obsession.
I love her too, and saw this mainly for her, like they said, the role started strong and doesn’t finish so great, unfortunately.
don't listen to the naysayers, the film is amazing
It was ok. Not really a horror film or particularly suspenseful. It reminded me of Spin Me Round oddly enough if a Cronenberg directed it.
Just got out of a showing at my local theater and … it’s a no for me. It had me at the beginning half. And oh I got the breast feeding scene!
I thought it was better than I expected. It left me semi confused. I dont agree with your raiting but enjoy your reviews.
I really wanted to like this movie.....but just didn't.
I liked the movie and the performances were strong. Grade: 3.5/5.
Mia Goth, I will see anything she's in!
It was surprisingly sloppy.
Five stars from me. Great movie.
Eurotrash..... that was about it.
Brandon is not like his dad, lol.
In this universe the rich could commit murder and there’s no repercussions. I’d hate to live in this universe.
We live in a universe filled with war, brutal police killing POC for no reason during traffic stops, and serial killers. Don’t even need to be rich, just be a sociopath…
@@jenniferjudy1620 have you been in a war? Know anyone killed brutally by police without justice? Affected personally or by someone you know by a serial killer that never went to trial? I'd rather live in our world than the one on film.
@@PetePuebla I was beaten & almost murdered by a serial killer when I was 18. but a stranger fought him and saved my life, while I managed to find police. I had to appear in court to testify. My parents survived WW2 running for their lives from communists and nazis. They both eventually escaped the atrocities of war to move to South America, met one another and fell in love, waited 10 years for a visa to America, and achieved the American dream! I’m grateful that I’m still alive, my home is paid for, and I can enjoy my beautiful family and my adorable grandchildren. And I’m happy for fish jelly ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
@@PetePuebla oh and I forgot to mention how my grown son was overdosed with ketamine by paramedics who were called by the police during his traffic stop without cause, but thankfully he survived. We’re white so not automatically profiled & murdered while driving. I wasn’t aware about the ketamine thing until that happened. Scary. Another time we were simply driving along the highway when a sheriff or state patrol was in an unmarked car driving by us, and assumed I was “being kidnapped” bc “both my hands were on the steering wheel”, and notified the county police, so 4 cop cars with guns drawn used excessive force on us. Odd event but thankfully we weren’t killed. 🤷♀️ They obviously had too much time on their hands that day.
@@jenniferjudy1620 but see, the difference is your serial killer sees justice. In this fictional film, there is no justice for the victims. As far as war, sure your parents were affected by war, but you've never been in one.
This movie is sooooooo bad!!!! I hate when it’s a great idea but they don’t know where to go with it… this movie was everywhere and nowhere like I get the movie but it’s for people that wanna love deep movies just because it’s confusing smh no depth not interesting waste of a time lol I’m mainly upset because I had so much hope and it was dead boring
The urns were for each clone that was killed. Have we tackled the theory that the real guy was killed on the beginning and the clone was left with the wife. They hint that he’s not acting like himself right after the 1st execution.
The trailer did nothing for me!
I was excited by the trailer, but the movie just stopped being interesting to me halfway through. Disappointing. I think Alexander is just not interesting enough as an actor, that’s probably a lot of it.
@@docsnake I agree about Alexander. I've seen him in a few things, and he's just kind of okay.
@@veganpeace7890 Exactly.
Ok, but this mixed dude is so hot lol
