    I think you guys are off on this one. The child-protection plotline does make some sense. They were being evicted from the home and the implication was they had no significant means; in the story we learn that the little girl was not consistently attending school and that, plus the implication that they were going to become homeless upon the eviction, it is not inconceivable that child protection would have taken the child into a foster system, separating the two. And you get the sense that the older sister was not really going to shoot anyone but was just threatening so that they would leave them alone -- she had sat the gun down and did not seem that she was intending to use it. But her rhetoric had worked the child up to believing they would be separated, and so the child made good on the older sister's threat when the sheriff entered. Bullock's age was not so much of a distraction for me, because she looks younger than her age. You are right that the prison sentence should have been shorter to make it easier to understand that the little sister was still living at home -- maybe a 15-year sentence, making her more like 20 years old rather than 25. But the no-contact order makes sense because the Bullock character was never the child's legal guardian, and even if she was, in most states after an adoption the birth parents have no right to contact the child. It makes sense here, since the older sister was convicted for committing a violent crime while resisting child-protection’s involvement, that while she was in prison she was ordered not to contact the child. The fact that the younger sister became an adult is balanced against the fact that she was struggling with mental health issues dating back to the trauma caused in the shooting, meaning there would be justification in leaving the order in place even into

I have come to the realization most not all movies that go to streaming services almost get a pass or we say to ourselves well, at least I didn’t have to pay a fortune to see this at a theater. She wasn't thinking about what legal action would've been taken against her but the psychological damage.
      Her sister had blocked out the event, most likely as a trauma response, when she realized that her sister had forgotten about it, she decided to take the fall so her sister wouldn't grow up with the burden of being a murderer, which is even more evident in her screaming she was only 5 several times.
      It's legally a dumb decision, but a heat of the moment decision made out of love and care.

    These 3 Things bother me the most about that movie:
    1. The little Sister is 25! Why the heck must Ruth negotiate with the new Parents?? They cant decide shit anyway, because the sister is an Adult! (Potrayed in the movie like a 16 year old, but anyway....)
    2. Why is the Character Viola is playing understanding right away the subjective hint in the heat of their argument, when Ruth says: ‘‘She was only 5 years old! ‘‘ ‘‘She was only 5 years old! ‘‘ In that Moment Viola is totally getting that the 5 year old shot the policeman and Ruth wanted to protect her sister. This scene is just about Viola playing a mood shift, so that she is at least playing a plottwist.
    3. Ruth wasnt able to shoot the policeman, because while the shot was fired, she was at the window, visible for everyone, shouting at the police. Thats why the policeman took the backdoor, to sneak up from behind. How can Ruth shoot the policeman pretty much the moment he enters the house, when she is obviously at a different corner in the house???

    As someone who works in the meat industry that scene where Sandra Bullock got beat up by that woman in the fish factory (shouting cop killer) was so over the top and unrealistic. In the real world, that woman who beat her up would have got an instant dismissal (despite whether Sandra is a convict or not) and both of them would have at least ended up in a boss's office...... But Sandra just walks it off and washes her face in a production sink, spits out blood and continues to contaminate all the meat. Most of the characters motives and development were never fully explored. And those brothers seeking revenge was hilariously stupid. But the highlight was the scene where Bullock screams "SHE'S ONLY FIVE YEARS OLD!!!! SHE WAS ONLY FIVE YEARS OLD!!!" LMAO! She could have told people about this from the beginning? There was a kid that accidentally shot his own mother in walmart and never went to juvie or prison or nothing. Everything was just too convenient for drama and the plot.

    Yeah, in the miniseries Ruth was 17 when the cop(s) were shot which makes more sense. I felt the emotion when they hugged at the end but it would've been great to see everyone find out, especially the sheriff's sons, that Ruth wasn't the murderer. Also, maybe Ruth took the rap because she didn't want her 5yo sister growing up knowing she'd killed someone, the fact that the 5yo couldn't be convicted was irrelevant.
    I thought it was a good flick though and worth a watch. Apparently the original miniseries is very good and is probably better though.

All the stories, to me, were to develop the main character and they had good conclusions with themselves.

Sounds cruel but I just don't think it made sense cause they put this whole cop kid in there and his trauma only to give up after a horrific betrayal as if it never happened. I really like Sandra, but someone needs to tell her that she can no longer pass for a 40 year old woman. She couldn't a few years ago for Bird Box, and she STILL can't. She's 57 years old, and that's FINE. I really wish she would create more age-appropriate roles for herself and other older women in the field, instead of trying to shoe-horn herself into roles that don't work. She should take a page out of Diane Lane's book.

    Also the white guy needs to interact more and speak up.
    Also, ruth felt that if she left the home, child services would take her sister. Her mother died at birth, father commited suicide and left them destitute and desperate.

    I watched this film with my girlfriend and she was crying and all emotional during the film and I was just confused on why. Until I figured out after watching this. The film has no characters or strong plot lines. It’s empty. Sandra did a great job playing against type. But it’s a shitty script.

    How does a 5 year old know how to use a gun 🙄 unrealistic

    • @Saffron-sugar
      @Saffron-sugar Před 2 lety +5

      Sadly, in America that is not uncommon. Many people teach their little kids how to shoot.
      Just this summer a woman was shot to death, by her toddler, during a Zoom call. Another was shot by her little child whilst she was driving.
      If you looked up the statistics on how many kids in the USA die from accidentally shooting themselves and each other, you would be shocked. As a Paramedic, there are 2 calls that are permanently burned into my brain.
      I envy your life, that you think it is unrealistic.

    • @tlmurraywrites
      @tlmurraywrites Před 2 lety +2

      I hate to say it, but if you lived in the South, you wouldn't have thought twice about it. Kids hunt in the morning before school/class here and go to school wearing camouflage jackets. A LOT of them have been using guns since 5, or have seen their parents do it enough to be dangerous. I also live in a military community, so the gun culture is real. That said, it's absolutely not just a southern thing. Remember the case in Arizona (2014) where the 9-yr old girl accidentally shot the firing range instructor in the head (with an UZI, a sub-machine gun!) while her parents (vacationing from N.J.) video'd the whole thing? The owner of that range admitted that they had allowed children as young as 5 shoot there. So, yeah, 5 year olds know how to shoot guns. [sigh]
